Diner Reviews
  • "Don't be discouraged by this off-the-wall hole-in-the-wall; first impression entering off the street may cause one to turn around and leave, but once at the table upstairs it was like being back in France. Waiter, Cook, Busboy, …all French. Wine…French. And then the food….voila….we WERE back in France. BOUCHE means mouth…appropriately named….tre's bon. Found this place on Urban Spoon…a great find; will definitely go back the next time we are in San Francisco."

  • "Well I have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally did. The Food was great and service exceptional. Love sitting in the window and people watching. Its a small place so large groups wont work. Best for parties of two or three. Its now my new favorite after long day of city shopping in Union Square."

  • "We rarely choose a cheese starter, but the French Laguiole that Bouche served with honey and nuts was outstanding. The petrale sole I had melted in my mouth with a wonderful sauce. My husband ate every morsel of the pork chop. We will definitely return to Bouche."

  • "Nice place, but the food was way too salty. Everyone at my table felt the food much too salty. Definitely did not wow us, although great atmosphere and good service."

  • "This place truly is a little gem of a restaurant. It's no bigger than a one bedroom apt but it has a good ambiance, great food, & wonderful service. Highly recommended"

  • "We enjoyed an excellent meal and warm, attentive service at Bouche. The space is small and intimate and has a great atmosphere. We will be regular customers."

  • "Great French Bistro. Charming ambience and wonderful original food. Service was attentive. Would go back there for sure."

  • "Very welcoming & helpful staff, delicious wine selections, but under-seasoned monochromatic bland food. Evidently no salt or pepper or fresh herbs in their kitchen. Too bad - we are always looking for small cozy French places where we can be regulars. But not here, very sorry."

  • "My friend Heather introduced me to this neighbor restaurant and she emphasized the artisan quality of this charming place. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a very full house and a very warm and welcomed vibe. The lower level was decorated with mosaic of sheet metal and wood, and mostly bar seating arrangement; while upstair was small table seating, maybe 5 table or so. The Charcuterie Selection was a great starter, while the Duck Confit Croquants was also excellent. Couldn't help but notice the handmade dinner plate, and we were told that they were made by the owner's wife. All and all a great experience and will definitely be going back."

  • "Wanted to find a nice restaurant reasonably close to the act theatre. The food was incredible we started with the bacon fougasse which was okay not spectacular but everything after was great. I ordered the lamb and it was fall apart amazing. She ordered the sole which was also delicious. The overall feel is really intimate. Loved it and will be back."

  • "We booked last minute so were not sure what to expect but from the warm welcome when we arrived to the excellent food we had a great night. The restaurant is very small but we didn't feel cramped at all. They make very good use of the space. Our waiter was attentive and very friendly. He recommended a wine that was not on the menu yet and not that expensive! It was delicious and really went well with the main course (Lamb) Finally, get the caramel dessert. It doesn't look like much but was amazing!"

  • "had a great brunch celebrating a birthday with a party of 10. there is some seating downstairs and a bit of seating upstairs. this is a small restaurant, and i would say can fit only one large group at a time. we really enjoyed the food and service for brunch. portions are small, but every bite was delicious. delicious bread, butter, and jam to start and awesome bellinis as well."

  • "Over all the place and ambience was very quaint and cute, small with traditional french village feel. The food was good, tasty, unique and well prepared. The server was nice, but we ended up waiting nearly forty minuets for our entree after our appetizers. More than likely the server was just trying to space out the meal, but instead forgot to place the order. I can completely understand, but he didn't communicate the mistake and left us at the table wondering what happened. I would go back but I'm not in any rush."

  • "From the smallest of kitchens a complex and superb meal. Like you've travelled to Paris for a bistro dinner. Kudos to chef and wait staff"

  • "Limited menu, but entrees well prepared, tasty and ample. Most dining upstairs. Good location near Union square."

  • "We went for a late dinner after the theater, and it felt like this place was just getting its second or third wind -- new diners arriving, finding their way to cramped tables and chatting with neighbors (very Parisian). There were a good number of native French folks enjoying dinner, which is always a good sign. Classic French menu with steak tartare and sweetbread starters, pork chop, lamb shank (which is served deboned, French style). Excellent and reasonable wine list with very good French regional coverage. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely be back."

  • "It was so tiny and cramped and dark. There were a only five tables, so you had to hear the conversations around you. The food was very tasty. It is not the place to celebrate anything, just a place to grab dinner with a friend. It felt like a real, tiny Parisian bar with food, minus the cigarette smoke."

  • "A good stopping place for dinner when you're shopping in Union Square. Place is casual, lively, and very small. It is packed with customers. Food is good but not outstanding, and is a bit pricey for what you get. For the two of us, with one appetizer, two entrees and two glasses of wine, our bill came to $130+. Perhaps because it's in the downtown area. Service is excellent."

  • "Bouche is a charming hole-in-the-wall that serves absolutely AMAZING food. The atmosphere feels a little crowded/loud, but the food and wine totally makes up for it! I had the sole with risotto and lobster sauce and the dungeness crab mashed potatoes. It was all TO DIE FOR. I would highly, highly recommend this restaurant to anyone going to San Francisco."

  • "Bouche is my go-to local restaurant and I feel so lucky it is so close to home. Guillaume Issaverdens, the maitre-d, is a wonderful host and kind, thoughtful man. He runs a very small restaurant packed with a huge creativity, knowledgeable food sensibility and lively, fun atmosphere. Bouche cooks the best lamb on the planet. I love every lamb dish I have eaten there and the other night was no exception: citrus and honey lamb shank, cooked to flavorful perfection, and nicely balanced with roasted almond and pomegranate couscous and ratatouille. A meal of soft textures and subtle, well-matched flavors. Brussels sprouts side added a crunchy, slight bitterness that was a great complement. Wine, dessert and service were excellent, as always."

  • "I wanted to try this place, because someone recommended their brunch menu and it's walking distance from home. The brunch was decent, but nothing out of the ordinary. I will visit again to try their dinner menu."

  • "Stumbled up this place and was so pleasantly surprised. Excellent food, service and wines. Felt I was in Paris, perfect little French Bisrto Very energetic bar area, the chef was on site not only creating but interacting with his patrons 5 stars is well earned!"

  • "It is a very welcoming place. It is like going home... very cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food is awesome. We liked all the courses... from the bacon bread, sweetbreads, salad to the main course - sole and vegetarian... the tart and the creme dessert finish off the fabulous meal."

  • "This was a small little candle lit place with a great atmosphere. Upstairs seated about a dozen people. The food was great too. I loved everything about this place. Next time I'm in San Francisco I'm definitely coming back."

  • "I read a lot of reviews and was looking for a nice French restaurant with quality food that was quieter than most places as my parents don't enjoy being in loud restaurants where we have to struggle to hear one another. This place was warm and cozy, the decor was very nice and the service was fairly good. The food was excellent and very fresh-we all cleared all of our appetizers and entrees. The scallops and rosemary polenta as very good and I had the butternut squash, eggplant napoleon as an entree which was very rich and filling but with just the right amount so not to be too much. The side of wild mushrooms were also really good. The only annoyance was that this place is smaller, the sound vibrates off the walls."

  • "The appetizers and the dessert was good. I had a lamb for my dinner and my husband had a pork. The lamb was supper soft and very tasty. The pork was ok. I don't see any typical french dish on the menu. It would have been nice if they have scargot on the menu. Overall the experience was like in France without the real *french attitude. Also, good selection of wine."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Bouche on Wed. It's a small place & the tables are crowded together, but the food was very well prepared and nicely presented. Noise level was too much for my husband but I thought it was fine. Most patrons were considerably younger than us (we're seniors) but a pleasant place to have a delicious meal. Service was fine."

  • "I've been here several times before. The food is sooo delicious and memorable and the ambiance can't be beat - very small, quaint, no-nonsense, good energy space. i prefer sitting at the bar or side counters downstairs."

  • "The reputation of Bouche may greatly exceed the reality. We had three small plate appetizers, all with very authentic French flavors, but not unusual. The main courses were overcooked and over priced and made with too much butter. The staff is friendly but it does not make up for a an ambiance vaguely suggestive of a small wooden garage. Bouche is perfect for you if you like being phoned twice to confirm the reservation you already made."

  • "Our first visit to Bouche was wonderful in every way. The intimate setting was a great backdrop for the wonderful food and fantastic wine. Our waiter was attentive, fun, helpful and so un snobby that he could have joined our table if he wanted to. The most outstanding part of the meal for me was enjoying a wine that was a serendipitous find on a trip to France and almost never available in the U.S.---Fitou from the Pyrhenees region of France. What a treat!"

  • "The food is very good and innovative. My only warning is for those who are in a hurry, that the service is very "leisurely" and typical of a French bistro. Having been to many bistros in France, we actually felt very much at home. Because of the small space, it can get quite loud. Despite what may seem like negative comments, we enjoyed it very much and will return."

  • "As Julia Child has said, "it's not French cooking, it's good cooking". Guillaume Issaverdens's restaurant combines excellent cooking skills, wonderful fresh ingredients and is not bound to set a of classic dishes. My cousin and I shared dungeness mash potatoes...C'est bon! I chose Duck Confit Croquants and Snapper for an entrée and thought many times of the need to share...it never happened...guilt to bear."

  • "Our main course (the pork) was cooked to perfection and with its accompanying sauce, absolutely delicious. Salad was crispy and tasty. Atmosphere was that of an intimate French bistro. We'll definitely be going back to Bouche."
