Diner Reviews
  • "We liked everything about this place. Service was very gracious--every request was met. Dining in the enclosed garden on the first nice night of the year was lovely. Food was very good. A large selection of appetizers. No problem for 2 to share a pasta dish. Interesting wine list with mid-price to slightly above mid-price range. Best of all, it was quite easy to have a conversation even though the tables around us were occupied."

  • "Very good food, contemporary italian, especially good deserts. Nice choice for after galleries or before off-broadway plays."

  • "While the food was decent the service was definitely not up to par. A group of 3 arrived about 15 minutes after my group of 2. They were attended to before us and were ordering their entrees before we were even asked if we wanted drinks before dinner. There was a constant lag time to get service and the restaurant was not busy at all. Regarding the food: the cheese platter special was very good and the lamb was decent, the wine selection was very good. The service probably disappointed me to the point of not enjoying the food or wine... but I won't be going back. There are way too many outstanding restaurants in NYC to revisit a place that is just okay."

  • "The setting was lively and comfortable. The menu offers a wonderful range and the portions were very good. I was looking for a good meal in a convenient location where my friend and I could talk without screaming. It was perfect!"

  • "One the best Italian places for the money. Better in warm weather with garden area. Bar needs updating so they can pull in a bar crowd and make it more comfortable for a pre dinner drink"

  • "There are so many great reasons to eat at Bottino. While it has the ambience of a popular gathering spot, I am always able to have a clear conversation with whomever I'm dining with. I don't know how this works, but I never find myself having to speak loudly to be heard. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The food delicious. Love the place!"

  • "We had dinner Saturday night before a show at the Hudson Guild. We all had a really nice time, the service was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. My main course was a special, home-made fettuccine with lobster and rock shrimp, it was outstanding. Also recommend the kale salad and the pecan tart dessert."

  • "We had a pressing engagement, & this was closeby.. turned out excellent. Great tasty American food, awesome friendly waiter, and were even more watchful of our time pressure than we were. We will most definitely be returning. Oh, & amazing cappuccino!"

  • "Nice atmosphere with candles and paper lanterns. Food was good and service was ok. Waiter seemed like he did the best he could but the service was still slow - too many people per waiter and seemingly poor communication between the waiters and bus boys."

  • "Valentine's Day pre fixe was good! Olive bread was delicious. The rack of lamb however was alright."

  • "Loved this restaurant in west Chelsea. If you're looking for something in this area I would definitely recommend it. Very nicely designed, amazing food, great scene. I can't wait to go back once the weather is warmer sit outside."

  • "I rarely complain and hardly ever look for the salt shaker, however the food was quite bland. Really difficult to make orrichette with broccoli rabe, sausage bland."

  • "Bottino is a Chelsea mainstay that draws largely from gallery-goers and people in the neighborhood. It's contemporary, relaxed and fun. Service can be spotty but good enough. Food is a step above average. It can be a great place to people watch."

  • "These guys know what they are doing and get better the longer they do it. We've moved to LA but every time we are back in NYC we make a point of dining at this gem."

  • "Still maintains its West Chelsea art scene hangout"

  • "Nicely priced salads and entrees that tasted very good. Lasagne was the best I've ever had. Fennel and arugula salad was outstanding. Definitely worth a second go. Nice wine selection too. Great service as well."

  • "Hostess seemed put out when we approached, waiter was more interested in chit-chatting with other staff, food came out disturbingly quickly and was clearly not freshly prepared. Supremely unimpressed."

  • "One of the best dining experiences I have had in recent memory. A lively bar in the front, with well run, comfortable dining rooms in the rear. The waitress was friendly, well versed in the menu and even suggested variations of the menu that accommodated food allergy concerns of one of my guests. Really sharp stuff. A top notch menu did not disappoint. Appetizers, meats and fish meals were all the top of the line. Highly recommended!!!!!! Thank you!"

  • "We had the Caprese salad to start. I had the lasagna and my date had the Bronzino. Everything was delicious. Attentive service. Lovely romantic ambiance. We decided to try the warm bread pudding for dessert. It was quite good. The coffee was outstanding. The glass of Chardonnay was nothing special. Overall: excellent value. We will eat here again"

  • "Everyone in our group of 6 enjoyed their meal, personally I believe mine was the best! I had the lasagna and it was amazingly smooth and flavorful. Our waitress was a bit harsh and not always quickly available for help, but overall a very good night."

  • "I had a meeting downtown, followed by a dinner with clients, one of whom was coming from NJ and the other from Brooklyn. I asked my assistant to find a place for dinner that was proximate to where my meeting was, which was sort of convenient for both clients. So, I knew nothing about this restaurant when going there, and was a little hesitant because I was bringing important clients. Lucky for me (or, thanks to my assistant), everything was great: the food, the service, the atmosphere, even the price."

  • "I went here with a group of girls and Jack was our waiter. He was attentive, funny, and made our night extra special with champagne on the house for my girlfriends birthday. And the food was delish! I ordered the lasagna and had to force myself to stop eating it so I wouldn't be too full. I will definitely go back!"

  • "We were surprised that Bottino has such good reviews. The food is average, what you would expect from a fairly expensive Italian restaurant, no more than that. But it is so poorly lit, intentionally, that is approaches dangerous levels, since it is also full of unexpected silly steps. We asked the waiter to turn up the lights so that we could read our menus and perhaps see our food. He told us they are not allowed to do it by "the boss," and that perhaps when/if the boss left, he could notch it up a bit. Even the candles were not enough to light the menu--which should be in Braille. The ambiance was so distracting that our party did not stay for dessert. If you're in the neighborhood, go two doors down to the Trestle on Tenth instead."

  • "We went to celebrate my son's birthday. My 9 and 6 year old grandchildren were with us. The noise level was such that their talking did not disturb anyone. My grandson reported it was the best meal he ever had. There was a large celebration in the garden room but that did not diminish the service we received or the timing of the food that was brought to our table. Although we had not said anything to our server directly, he was observant enough to notice that we were celebrating a birthday and brought the requisite candle. A good time was had by all of us and we look forward to our return trips."

  • "Favorite dishes: octopus appetizer special, cheese platter (excellent selection of cheeses) This restaurant is a very nice place to have a yummy Italian dinner with reasonable NYC prices. Service is great and restaurant with outdoor (enclosed in winter) space."

  • "I hadn't been in 10 years when it was great - this time everything about the place was mediocre - the service was terrible and the food was below average. Even the decor was dated and not in a classic way. Sad. So many better options in Chelsea."

  • "I very much liked my pasta with tiny clams, but my fellow diners were less enthusiastic (they had fish). I would go back--if in the 'hood but probably wouldn't go out of my way. The "garden" room alas was just a glassed-in roof. Too bad. Service was very, very nice--maybe a reaction to all the negative reviews about their arrogant service?"
