A word from Bossa Nova
Bossa Nova Flavor.

Created with the look and feel of the Favela, Bossa Nova brings the flavor of Rio's Streets to San Francisco. The Favela (Rio's vibrant ghetto culture)is the birthplace of Samba and Bossa Nova. Music and dancing bursts out of dancehalls and clubs into the streets. The air is fragrant with lime, sizzling churraquinho and fresh seafood. Cachaca flows as freely as conversation. The Favela is the place of the people.

Only 1.5 blocks from the Orpheum Theater.

  • "You always know when you walk into a restaurant with a reservation and they look like deers caught in headlights that you should really just turn around and leave. However, had once had a great experience here, so we stayed. Bad choice. They said oh sorry we are overbooked you can take a table in the lounge downstairs, its the same menu. Well yes it was but the service level was terribly slow and the whole place was understaffed. We waited 30 min to get a drink on the table. Fortunately the food quality was still as good as before. Don't take reservations if you can't fill them. I hate this will such a passion that I won't be returning here."

  • "The entire experience was fantastic. I read reviews regarding poor service so I was a bit nervous. This was a date and we had tickets to see a show at 8pm. We arrived a little before 6 in order to have time to relax and enjoy the experience. Once the place got crowded the service did slow down a little but it was nothing warranting a bad review. The Hamachi tapas was outstanding. Truly one of the best dishes I've had in all of San Francisco. I highly recommend. If you're in the mood to relax with some truly exceptional food, this is a great choice. If you're in a hurry or rushed, this probably isn't the best choice."

  • "There is opportunity for a resturant to excel near the Orpheum. Bossa Nova hasn't yet. The food has potential, and it arrived promptly while the tables were still filling. Our first choice of wine was terrible, vinegary prosecco, replaced reluctantly. The white wine replacement tasted old and stale; we didn't bother to replacement it. Service fell apart: our plates were cleared following a single word "finished?" by the server, then in a few minutes our check arrived. We were not asked about coffee or dessert, despite the still early hour and some table availability. Then we learned that their credit card system was down, and we were not trusting enough to let them write our information down and enter it later."

  • "Went there on a Friday night with reservations for 6pm. The location of the restaurant is not in a great area but they are close to the Orpheum and I would make that place a definite stop before attending a show. The wait staff make sure to ask if you are planning to attend a performance that evening. We ordered the ceviche and tuna tartar to start, and chose the pork chop and Moqueca for our main dishes. Moqueca is like the Rio equivalent of cioppino minus the crab and with coconut milk added into the sauce. Very tasty! We finished everything off with caramelized onions surrounding a scoop of vanilla ice cream glazed with Meyers Rum. Overall - very good food and service. Would definitely go back."

  • "Went for Valentine's Day dinner. Food was great. Received appetizers fairly quickly but the time between Finishing and main course was extremely long. And the server didn't not check in with us once. Actually think they brought us the wrong food but another sever Acted like he messed up tables but since we waited so long -we think they had to re-do Our order. Would go again but don't expect the servers to check in on you Go for the good"

  • "I read multiple reviews so I Kind of expected this. Food was AMAZING. Great ambiance. But oh such a shame on the service. Literally the worst..ever..evvvverrr. We ordered multiple small plates. Out of the 5 plates we ordered, 3 came out over the course of almost 2 hours. NOTE: make sure to order a pitcher of mojitos so that at least you have drinks to last the ordeal. Anyway, I told the guy to cancel the last 2 plates because we had to leave. The check Still had those items on it. It got to the point we were joking with the two couples next to us about the whole thing. They were going through the same thing. Sort out your service! Not going back..."

  • "The food and the ambiance was amazing... But service was horrible! We got there at 7:15, ordered at 7:20.... Didn't get our food till almost 8:30. Then it took almost another hour to get dessert."

  • "If you go here, be sure to order a pitcher of mojitos. Although the restaurant isn't set up for large groups, we went with a group of 8 on an off night for my birthday. It was fun, the food was great. Everyone ordered something different and there were no complaints."

  • "I found the food to be delicious and will highly recommend the seafood dish. Service on the other hand is far inferior, I cannot say that our waitress was rude, however I can certainly say that she lacked proper training, our food also came out randomly, appetizer mixed in with entrees and not all our entrees came out at the same time... As an several minutes in between. Overall I had a good time."

  • "The upstairs area of the restaurant was very crowded and noisy, so we took the opportunity to be seated in the downstairs lounge area. I'm not sure if the service would have been better upstairs, but I can't recommend this place to anyone planning to head to a show at the Orpheum theatre afterwards -- the service was slow when it was present at all, and you can't relax when you're worried about getting to the show on time. You can manage to get *passable* service if you continually get up and pester the bartender, but it ultimately made for an anxious and unpleasant overall experience. I took the advice of another reviewer to get a 6:00 reservation for dinner before an 8:00 show, and we only made it by the skin of our teeth. Go elsewhere!"

  • "Was concerned about the service due to the other reviews. So booked for 2 for 5:45pm (in time for the show at 7pm). Arrived and found a seat at the bar - service was great, and the food was perfect for our appetites (Brazilian tapas). My wife also had a custom-made cocktail (she just asked for vodka and fruity) that was so good she ordered a second. It looks like they are trying to fix their issues - the servers are clearly doing what they can to keep patrons happy, but perhaps its the layout (crowded by the time we left), or the process, but they seemed to be getting stressed by the time we left. Hopefully they can fix that before we go back (and we fully expect to go back!)."

  • "Good flavors on the lamb and steak, good cheese bread but despite the place being empty at 6 pm, the lamb was cold presumably waiting on the steak. Cook could have better timing. The sauce saved it."

  • "From the outside, one can hardly notice this swanky spot. It is near the Orpheum, so we decided to try it out. Most plays are at 8pm, I would recommend 6pm reservations so as not to be rushed (as we were) We still made our play, but since everyone is on the same time schedule, service was slow. Food was great!"

  • "A little out of the way, but worth the effort. The dinning room is cramped with small tables, but another option is the downstairs lounge where they will serve dinner - turns out to be a very romantic and more comfortable option... just be sure to arrive early enough to eat before the DJ and lounge/club crowd arrives. Food was excellent as were the drinks, and the wait staff honest enough to admit which dishes were the best that night. Took the GF, and had a great evening."

  • "Place was packed when we showed up for our reservation and we were seated right away. Orders were quickly taken for our drinks and recommendations were made on food choices. Food order was taken when drinks were delivered. Service was terrific and the food was absolutely fabulous! The ahi tuna, pork bellies and cheesebread were just terrific appetizers and the entrees were great too. We did not have enough time to eat dessert but the menu looked wonderful."

  • "It's located in SoMa in the Mid-Market center. It's so easy to walk past this joint as there's not much signage. They have an underground bar/lounge and the waiter was happy to give us a tour upon request. The basement has a very exclusive feel and they'll be hosting live music soon. I'm finding myself inviting all my friends to go there with me since I live around the corner. My new fav spot!"

  • "What a find!! We were very late for our reservation due to hideous traffic, frantic because we couldn't get through by phone but knew we still had to get out in time to make a theatre curtain. The owner, facing a FULL HOUSE and evidently short a few staff that night, nevertheless smoothly found us seats at the bar and made us feel like the most special people in the world. But beyond amazing service - the food here is KNOCK OUT good. Pork belly to swoon over, just meltingly delicate. A steak kabob in three sauces so inventive it had us gasping. Goat cheese with macadamia crust and honey - unbelievable. Mussels with fennel/coconut broth - fantastic. (and I am gluten-intolerant .. no prob!) An amazing experience. TEN STARS!"

  • "We had a great time at this little hidden gem just 2 blocks (short walk) from the Orpheum Dark, interesting atmosphere - hard to find (the unlit sign is only about 6" x 24") but worth it Your date will think you are really cool if you know about this place"

  • "A convenient spot to have dinner before a show. Food was very good. But for an 8PM show, make your reservations for 6PM. Service is on the slower side but friendly and attentive. Also, seating is limited. Our party was for 6, and all they initially offered was a table that butted up to the door entrance. We changed to a counter height table, which was also uncomfortable. Chairs had no backs and I had to loop my purse and jacket over my knees while dining."

  • "The food was delicious. The place is small and tries to put as many people as possible in the seats. Many tables for two right next to each other. Felt like personal space was taken. overall we enjoyed the experience."

  • "I've now been to Bossa Nova three times. It seems that the prices have gone up in the last two years. It's hard to have a good meal for less than $30 a head. The service is a bit aloof. I waited 15 minutes for a cocktail."

  • "= Don't Bother. The food is fine, the staff always looks like they are confused that you are even there, and slightly annoyed you ask for things, like food and drinks. Given that and the fact that the prices are high for what you get, it's just a total miss. We live in the neighborhood and we NEED good restaurants here, so we've given it 3 tries - it's struck out all 3 times. Sad, but true. Sofa Lounge (the Speak Easy downstairs) is pretty cool though, so give that a try."

  • "First of all, loved the ambiance and service. Even though we were there on New Year's Eve, we didn't feel rushed. The fish was nice and fresh. All was good. We'll return."

  • "We loved every dish we ordered from entrees to small plates. Loved the feijoada (black bean stew). Unlike some of the other reviews we had great service. Would have been nice to have some farofa as a side."

  • "Very small venue -- very busy -- excellent food. Had a very pleasant dinner after a matinee. Shared the entree, as well as several of the tapas style dishes. Each dish was well prepared and tasty."

  • "Park at the Soma Grand lot on Mission street and dine at Bossa Nova either before or after a show at the Orpheum Theater makes a neat combination for out of town attendees. The food is very tasty and well prepared, but the ambiance and service are VERY casual and personable. You kind of need to be in the spirit of a Brazilian locals only establishment. Everyone asks if you are going to the show so they are aware of the need for speed for some people. We had just left the matinee so they figured we were on Brazilian time and were going to use the table for the rest of the night. Sometimes that's nicer than being rushed so the restaurant can turn the table, but you may have to seek out service at times. Free dessert if you have a ticket!"

  • "Six of us (middle-aged couples) ate dinner before going to see Book of Mormon at the nearby theater. Our waitress was probably new and had some difficulties. Some were in hearing our orders because the restaurant was so noisy. Our drinks took a long time to arrive, and the food arrived in odd order, such as salads arriving after entrees. The food, however, was fantastic. I had the fried smelt, ceviche and a caesar salad with salmon (the salmon option was not on the menu but they were out of shrimp). My wife had the mussels. The drinks menu is misleading in that it has a list of "whiskies and Single Malts", but there were no single malts on the list."

  • "This is a small, eclectic Brazilian restaurant. The food is very good for foodies, but is not a place that kids would enjoy. It is walking distance from the Orpheum Theatre, which is what we needed. It offers "small plates" for sharing, or entrees. Full bar. Noisy. I had the Ceviche of the Day, which was tilapia, and was very good."

  • "Perfect location, only had to park once and great food. Four of us had a variety of small plates which we shared, a great way to try different foods. Service was very friendly and fast. I would definitely return next time i see a show at the Curran. i will tell others too!!"

  • "took 3 times to walk up to get a server before orders can be taken, and pretty much if you need anything need to pin someone down. When we paid the bill, seemed like 3 other people were at the counter doing the same thing, checking on multiple items that were ordered but really did not get served, so it's not just us that's out of luck."

  • "I'd love to rate the food, but I sat there for 1.5 hours and was never served. They kept saying the food was coming, but we had to leave for our play so I went hungry. They did serve one person at our table so we all watched while she ate...that is just bad form. Then they tried to charge us for everything and didn't offer anything for our trouble or hunger."

  • "Probably the best mojitos in the city. The food is spectacular as well. Only drawback is that it's a bit cozy, so if you don't mind eavesdropping on the table next to you then all's good!"

  • "Great little spot nearby the theater. Came here before a show. Service is slow and the menu items are misleading (my order should have included coconut rice but when asked they simply said it was a mistake on the menu and wouldn't give me the rice!) but the food tastes pretty decent."
