Diner Reviews
  • "Service was a stand-out! Both the host and our waiter, John, went out out of their way to accomodate."

  • "Great tacos and guacamole! The house margarita was amazing as well! Would love to come here again!"

  • "would not recommend this restaurant. it was recommended from our hotel looking for authentic upscale mexican. food was very sub par. i ordered a pork dish that was basically inedible. wait service however was very attentive and friendly"

  • "Our service was wonderful and I love that you can order as many dishes as you want from the brunch menu. The dishes are small so if you don't like what you ordered you can order again! The menu is unique and my party had fun trying and sharing many wonderful dishes."

  • "Went for an early dinner on a Thursday night. Service was friendly, attentive w/out being overbearing (I hate when servers come by a lot and ask if everything's ok). I am not a foodie, all I know is the dishes we had were delicious with interesting flavors and a laid back, comfortable atmosphere."

  • "Being from the east coast, it can be difficult to find great Mexican food. The Border Grill exceeded my wildest expectations. While not exactly cheap, I was so impressed by the menu, the happy hour deals and even the complementary chips and salsa. The poblano quesadilla appetizer was one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Our server was extremely friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. I would come here again and recommend it to anybody without hesitation."

  • "This is the first negative review I've taken the time to write. Nothing horrible happened, per se, but overall, it was a disappointing experience. We were entertaining colleagues, who are locals of the area. I'd heard great things and was familiar with the chefs/owners, so had high expectations. The ambience felt a bit dated, from the dirty carpet and painted furniture to tableware. Service was OK but confusing. We were waited on by 3 different people throughout a 90-minute dinner. Seemed to be a lack of awareness; i.e. asking for food orders when drinks hadn't arrived yet. Food was mediocre - mine came out room temp. Resembled cuisine any other Mexican chain restaurant could offer. I was embarrassed, having made the reservation."

  • "Food is unlike you will find anywhere else. An all you can eat brunch of unlimited small pllates of their unique food (and I wouldn't call them small plates..the portions are sizeable) for $30 is an unheard of bargain with $10 bottomless mimosas. When a restaurant can elevate an artfully served plate of green and white rice and black beans to 5 star presentation and melt in your mouth taste, it is definitely a foodie find. The plantains are HIGHLY recommended."

  • "The food was not as flavorful as I thought it was going to be. The tables were sticky and the floor was dirty. Would not visit again."

  • "Great food, great prices. Our waiter suggested the special sampler plate which allowed us to have three different entrees. This was great since I was having trouble selecting which one to order!"

  • "Food is good but was served cold. Loud music is a problem. If you actually want to have a conversation while eating, don't go here."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "They gave us a quiet room upstairs where we had elderly family members who appreciated the quiet. They catered to our every need and we had the place to ourselves with a chance to enjoy each other completely it was very nice!"

  • "If you're not eating at The Border Grill, you're wrong. This is, by far, my favorite Mexican restaurant in California, and one of the only things I'll make the drive from OC to Santa Monica for. The Red Chilequiles are AMAZING, and the steak was, quite possibly, the best I've ever had. The pomegranate margarita is fantastic. Go. Eat, drink, and have a blast."

  • "Coming from San Diego - I think our local taco shops (. . . . Bertos) are the gold standard for mexican food north of the border, but for something a bit more refined, without getting overly sophisticated, this is the spot. Great flavors, especially the steak and carnitas. Great margies too."

  • "very noisy a bit too loud had to raise voices to be heard"

  • "Having so many choices, and being able to try so many wonderful dishes, each served on a small plate in small quantities made brunch very fun. Add that the food was tasty, each dish having distinct flavors, and it made for a festive day of food tasting. The Oaxacan Pancakes, the Yucatan Eggs Benedict Slider, Grilled Fish Taco, and the Baja Ceviche Tostadita were our favorites. And yes, we ate all that and more because each item is a couple of bites and we shared. Although we each had to have our own order of Oaxacan Pancakes!"

  • "I had never eaten at Border Grill before. On this particular occasion I was with a colleague and we were having dinner before attending a local theatre event in the area. The food was delicious and fresh, the service was excellent and our waiter made great recommendations. The house staff was also attentive and made sure that we were well taken care of!"

  • "My wife & I ordered a three course meal for me and a salad for her. The waitress, was nice but incompetent. They delivered only an appetizer sized salad, my appetizer wasn't delivered. A manager came out, apologized, and promised a full size salad. The waitress apologized for the mixup, and took our drink order. Next, my entree arrived (where's the appetizer, and where is the replacement salad?). Another ten minutes elapsed, no drink or salad delivered, then the general manager arrived to apologize. All this incompetent service took place with only one other table occupied in the entire restaurant, I can't understand why they couldn't provide our order in a proper sequence. They did provide a free dinner, and the food was excellent."

  • "went with my fiancee and 2 other friends for a birthday brunch last Sunday - GREAT food with a large variety of options - most of which could be adjusted slightly to handle any dietary concerns (they have a great amount of gluten free options, which is much appreciated). Grace, our server, was WONDERFUL - so helpful and friendly. and their manager, Chris, stopped by our table and was nothing but polite and attentive to not only us but everyone around. We would all definitely recommend Border Grill! it's a must! "

  • "The food was amazing. It was my first time here, and I will certainly be returning. The drinks, appetizers, and main meal were fabulous and the portions were quite large (Always a good thing!)"

  • "Food and service is good, but it's so noisy you can't carry on a conversation without shouting. Wouldn't go back."

  • "We loved the salsas that came out with the chips, the guacamole, and our dinners. My husband ordered the lamb tacos, which he loved. He gave me a taste and they were sublime. I ordered the Yucatan pork, which came with a pain white rice, beans, plantains, guacamole, and homemade fresh corn tortillas. The pork was bursting with tangy flavor, and it was a generous portion. The rice was so much more interesting than its plain white appearance gave away. We also had a light and airy key lime cheesecake souffle. It was a bit loud, but definitely felt like a party."

  • "The dishes on the menu all looked great. We ordered the Maryland Softshell Crab Tacos off the specials menu. What a tasty creation. It was hard to decide which other entrée to order. We chose the Yucatan Pork to share as we did with the tacos. It was delicious. The homemade tortillas are really nice, too. Everything was prepared and seasoned well. The Mexican Bread Pudding dessert topped off a great meal. Our server was Sasha if I can remember. Had a couple Pomegranate Margs so forgive me if I got her name wrong. She was really knowledgeable and super friendly. Border Grill is buenolicious!!! "

  • "We had dinner at the Border Grill on a Sunday evening. The inside of the restaurant is a vibrant orange with great art work painted right on the walls. The food was great and dessert was amazing. I would suggest just having a plate of fish tacos with no rice or beans, three is just not enough and you can't be satisfied with rice and beans. One downside to the restaurant was its service, the service of our waiter in particular. He was disappear for long periods of time and we would not see him and it took longer then usually to get out food. Another suggestion would be to have some cushion on the chairs. if you have your customers wait so long for their food, at least provide them a comfortable place to sit."

  • "It's an insult to genuine Mexican cooks, and a rip-off in general, for this restaurant to call its food Mexican. Whatever else you think of it, it's NOT Mexican. I truly don't get it. "

  • "This visit was for tasting pass around foods to be served at a future catered event. It was my first time at this favorite LA Mexican restaurant and I will become a regular."

  • "We were in Santa Monica for only two nights and the Border Grill caught our attention. We had 2 wonderful entrees - tacos and puled pork, and were both pleased. We also loved the margaritas, especially the cucumber jalepenio!! We would dine there again in a heartbeat!"

  • "Mother's Day Brunch was disappointing. There should have been a lower price for kids! Good gracious. And the food came out cold. I usually love Border Grill, that's why I chose it for Mother's Day. I'll be back but not for a special occasion. "

  • "Food was average, nothing was hot, everything that came out was luke warm and felt like it had been reheated...definitely not worth the price"

  • "This used to be one of my favorite places .But every time I have come here in the last few years I have been disappointed. The chili relleno was so sweet I had to send it back. I got the turkey tostada salad that had about 10 kernels of corn , no vinegary salad dressing, and wilted lettuce. The margarita was also too sweet. Maybe I should just give up and not try it again."

  • "Overall, very satisfied! A bit over priced. $220.00 with tip for 4 people so definetly not an every weekend spot for me. Very impresive and creative dishes. Gonna try "Zengo" next time, which includes bloody marys's, sangria's and mimosas. BG only includes mimosa's ($10.00 charge)."
