Diner Reviews
  • "The interior dining room and patio in the courtyard are both very cozy. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The food was very good. We split the filet and crab cake entree. The filet was cooked exactly to the temperature we requested. The cut was tender and tasty. The crab cake contained lump crab meat, only, and tasted great."

  • "Excellent food, excellent service. Our party had both Steak and seafood. All the entrees were perfectly prepared and of curse the snapper soup is famous. It is a great spot and we will definitely be going back."

  • "The atmosphere and quality of food surpasses many "fine" seafood and steakhouses that i have been to. The wait staff is knowledgable and polite. My wife had the Sea Bass, which was excellently prepared. I had the cowboy ribye which was perhaps one of teh best steaks that i have ever eaten. The appetizer and side dish prices were very reasonable (this restaurant is an A-La-Carte establishment much like a Mortons) however the entre's were a bit pricey, but worth it. A definate go to for a romantic eveneing dinner or special occassion!"

  • "We loved the romantic atmosphere of Bookbinders. Our waiter was top-notch! The filet mignon was delicious and we would rate it a 10+. Will certainly recommend this "hidden treasure" to our friends."

  • "We had the opportunity to celebrate a special occasion with family and Bookbinder's made it even more special. They welcomed our special guest at the door and had special menu's printed out to highlight the occasion. The service was (as always) excellent and our waiter freely offered his favorites and highlights of the menu. Timing was spot-on and every dish was delicious. We all tried something different, and each of us thoroughly enjoyed our choice. Don't miss the desserts as well. I have been to Bookbinder's many times, and they have never let me down."

  • "We had an absolutely wonderful meal at Bookbinders! Our party enjoyed oysters, clams, shrimp bisque for appetizers before steak filet with either lobster tail or crab cake. Delicious! Jeannette (if I remember correctly) gave us outstanding service! And - a classy touch - the owner came around to each table to greet his guests. Highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion - its not inexpensive."

  • "Bookbinder's is always good and service was great. Excellent lobster and corn au gratin. Shrimp and fries a little too greasy."

  • "Good drinks and tasty appetizer in the bar before dinner. I had the pepper crusted Ahi Tuna & my wife had the Salmon and both were very good. The service was great both in the bar & restaurant. The old mill style architecture of this and surrounding buildings provide great atmosphere. Visit the great ship lock up the street for a historical perspective of the area."

  • "As you would expect the food is terrific, the service was sufficient, the price was hefty. If you go in with these expectations, you will be pleased."

  • "We had not been to Bookbinders in a few years and we not as happy with the food quality and preparation, especially the crab cake. It was smaller and no lumps as before. The service was not as attentive. Dirty dishes remained on the table for a long time. WAitress was friendly but used bare hands on straws with refills. She could have brought drinks with new staw. Not the same service and food quality but still a huge bill."

  • "Was ok. Nothing spectacular. Appears to have declined since I last ate there. Menu was lacking. Not much to select from. Not sure I would attend."

  • "Old Original Bookbinder's is our (my wife's and mine) favorite Richmond restaurant. The food is always superb and exactly as described. The service is among the best in Richmond -- friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, attentive waitstaff who respect your privacy. I especially like that we can have a conversation at normal speaking levels. Just a delightful dining experience. The filet mignon is exemplary and the crab cakes without equal in Richmond."

  • "As always, this trip to Bookbinder's for a special dinner was fantastic. We had a group of 7 and the staff cared for us with attention to detail, organization, and concern. Very highly recommended for those occasions that have to go right!"

  • "Good seafood imaginatively and expertly prepared. Extensive wine list. A little pricy but worth every penny."

  • "Great steak but lobster tail was dry and tough. When you send over $200 for 2 everything should be perfect."

  • "Prior to a night out with wifey, we asked friends on Facebook for suggestions. Bookbinders came up from multiple sources. We were not disappointed. We made reservations, and loved it. Great atmosphere, tasty appetizer, with a great wine list. Easy parking, near Shockhoe bottom, would recommend to everyone!"

  • "This was our first visit to this restaurant. I had assumed it was a little more on the water-- but I don't know Richmond very well. It's not really on the water. Nonetheless, the restaurant is beautiful. The server was very knowledgeable and the food was very good (although expensive). My only complaint was that we were seated in the middle of the restaurant, nowhere near a window. I kind of felt like we were "lesser guests" since there were much better available seating and they put us in the least special part of the restaurant. "

  • "My wife and I went to Bookbinders after getting married and cannot say enough about how great it was! From the moment we walked in, we felt like royalty! We were greeted very warmly and then presented with a gift card from my wife's workmates. We got to our table and had a wonderfully unique experience as we found a page had been added to the menu with a congratulatory message and our names! It was a wonderful thing for the the restaurant to do and we got to keep the pages! Our food was prepared just as we asked and came to the table at just the right temperature. And the rolls we had were SO good! OUr evening ended with an invitation to view the outdoor area behind the restaurant. We will be back!"

  • "We appreciated the kind mention of our anniversary, the minute we arrived. The Server was outstanding also in her kindness and observation skills. Her bringing in the surprise appetizer from our daughters was well executed. All of our questions and discussions were kindly listened to and we enjoyed every minute of our anniversary evening at Bookbinders. Thanks, Doug Ray 804-330-1228"

  • "The service was very good and the restaurant was very nice. The "oysters on a half shell" were excellent. The steaks were good, but not what I expected (compared to other high end steakhouses). Overall we had a good experience."

  • "We had dinner at Bookbinders for my birthday. The food was excellent and the atmosphere great. We usually don't eat dessert, but the bread pudding was a temptation, and it turned out to be worth every calorie! "

  • "A great place to eat on special occasions...Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Great Service. Delicious chopped salads, crabcakes, fried shrimps and steaks."

  • "Having not been to Bookbinders in years, we ate there Monday evening. While the menu is extensive, the prices are extremely inflated for what you get. I got the scallops which were so so. My husband got the seafood salad which he said was tasteless. We will not be going back."

  • "A great setting for or Easter Sunday meal. The food was a treat and the service is second to none. Noise level was nice not too quiet but not secluded just a nice atmosphere. "
