A word from Bonterra
Bonterra is located in a renovated 100 year old church in the historic Southend District of Charlotte. Sommelier & Owner John Duncan has created a stunning array of 200 wines by-the-glass and an additional 300 selections from the cellar which comprises one of the largest wine lists in Charlotte. Featured in the November 15, 2000 issue of Wine Spectator Magazine as one of the New Wave Wine Bars in America. Winner of the prestigious AAA Four-Dimond Award and DiRoNA Award of
Excellence. Complimenting John's selection of wines are the menu offerings of Executive Chef Bill Schutz. Chef Schutz's elegant approach to cooking shows nightly in his diverse menu of fresh seafood, Midwestern lamb, oven roasted filet mignon and the signature fried lobster tail.

This is a fun low key place that we will definately return to. We both like wine and the selection by the glass is the best I have seen in the city. I had a great Turley Zin and Lisa had the Rombauer. The food was a little mixed. Lisa had the shrimp and grits that was just OK. I had som short ribs and mashed potatoes that were really good. The place has a great vibe and we will be back.

The restaurant did a really excellent job handling our group of 18 for dinner. Everyone was pleased with the food which was cooked perfectly and delivered to the table with no bumps in the road. Mandi, their Special Events Manager, did a very good job making sure we were set up as promised. She tightened up the menu, made good recommendations on seating and staging appetizers. Overall, she was in touch and made sure everything and everyone was ready for our arrival. I bring 18 - 25 out to dinner every couple of months, and even the best restaurants can fail to deliver when I bring larger groups out to dinner. Bonterra did an outstanding job.

We LOVED the food, we had the venison and short rib. The service was on point as was the wine list. The only thing I thought was off was that the restaurant was only about 25% full. We didn't go too late or early so I was very curious as to why such a great spot and great food was notably empty.

We selected Bonterra for my birthday dinner, based on its fine reputation. But we found the experience to be underwhelming. Service was barely adequate, the food was mostly "meh" including the scallops (served lukewarm with oversalted chorizo) and ribeye (tasty but nothing special). The high point was the salted sweet trifle dessert. The restaurant's wine selection is another plus, with so many options by the glass. We did enjoy tasting a few different ones. Overall, it fell far short of our expectations, especially considering the high-end prices. It's a shame, because it's so lovely inside and has such potential to be a destination restaurant.

Bonterra is a wonderful Charlotte restaurant. Certain to meet the needs of any dinner (or wine lover), it has a creative menu, delicious desserts, common and hard to find wines, and is set in an old church!! One this dining occasion, we only intended to grab a glass or two of wine and we ended up staying for hours and enjoying dinner, too! We love restaurants that can convert from "after work drink" to gourmet meal spot without ever having to change tables!!

Food was outstanding, as well as the wine list. My wife had the grouper, myself the venison. ..both were awesome. Appetizers were very tasty, as well as the desserts. There was a wedding party on the second floor, which made the entire restaurant noisy, while people were gazing over the wall, staring at the diners. It would help to have a teporary partician to help reduce the noise. Other than this, we will be back. The server was prefessional, and the staff was very pleasant.

The occasion was my wife's birthday. A great friend recommended Bonterra and he could not have been more spot on. We enjoyed the entire experience from our wine selection, appetizer, entree and the desert. My wife has Celiac decease and is extremely sensitive to Gluten. We had not problem to make a tasty selection for her, which made me extremely happy since it was her day. Although there was a larger event on the balcony ( rehearsal dinner ), the attention was still outstanding. We asked for help to select a specific wine preference and found a terrific match. We will recommend this to our friends that can enjoy this experience at this price point.

Food was good. We went overboard on the apps getting oysters, beef tartare, and 2 spreads. The pimento cheese spread was only okay. The smoked salmon and goat cheese spread was brilliant. Entrees were good, chicken something and some sort of skirt steak for my guest. The desert was awesome. Sea Salt Caramel Triffle - we were full, but still polished this off.

We've been to Bonterra twice for Fire in the City so when our daughter was coming to town, we decided it was time to actually visit and try the menu. What a great choice! We put together an appetizer from their plates to share selection. The spreads we chose were plentiful and yummy. The smoked salmon came home with us and was just as good the next day. Entrees were timed perfectly. Our waiter actually asked me if we were ready for them. The lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I had a bite of my husband's grouper and was equally impressed. Highly recommended and we will be back.

Bonterra was a great experience, including delectable food, extensive wine list, and a sophisticated atmosphere. I would recommend Bonterra for a romantic evening with a significant other or even a nice family dinner. It is in the heart of a growing, trendy section of Charlotte, just five minutes from uptown.

Sadly, our supper club picked Bonterra as we had not been there in a long time. One couple was adamant that we not go there based on a bad previous experience but the democratic voting took us there anyway. Wish we had listened. The service was lousy for a less than 1/2 full restaurant on a Sarurday night, the food was bland and anything but memorable, and the white LED lighting made us feel like we were in a warehouse. The worst part was the signature fries lobster, which has always stuck in my mind as a unique and scrumptious dish...but for $41. it was nothing more than an over-battered piece of rubber. Sorry Bonterra....but you are just not the same.

we arrived on a Saturday night (weekend after restaurant week ended) and showed up to a fairly empty restaurant. it took almost 5 minutes for a waiter to appear and offer for drink order. throughout the evening, we were constantly waiting for the waiter to come serve our table, sitting with empty wine glasses, waiting for silverware, etc. considering the restaurant was less than half full, and you are paying hundreds of dollars for dinner, not up to standard. the best food was the cheese, meats, olives platter. the remainder of the food was heavily over salted (steak tartare and all of the toasts they serve with food) and the flatbread was fairly bland. overall, disappointing.

The food was great and the service was phenomenal. Since this was restaurant week there was only the "Charlotte's Feast menu". I had the arugula salad, free ranged grilled chicken breast and the cookies and cream for dessert. the portions are small but just enough to full you. I will be sure to return to sample a few other items

This restaurant greets it's visitors with a plethora of awards upon walking in. I was excited at this view only to e extremely disappointed by the portions of the food. The service was standard fine dining service. The server was friendly an helpful in selecting our wine. The salad I received as the start of my meal was finished in a literal 3 bites.....this isn't some ridiculous pompous French restaurant and yet the portions reflected such a different value then what you pay for. I will be going to Capitol Grill or Blue for our next fine dining experience.

Had a pleasurable experience at bonterra but a couple things were disappointing. They were out of the first 2-3 bottles of wine we tried ordering and they ended up upgrading us to a more expensive wine which I thought would be same price as the others. Nope. Food was very delicious!!! Mussels were amazing. The scallop entree was great but only had 2 scallops total. Huge disappointment. Should've been 3-4. Tried the specially dessert (black&white) and while it was tasty, it was very small on the plate and was consumed in 2-3 bites. Sure hope their portions are larger outside of restaurant week. Would be willing to come back then to see entree sizes. Great service from Joel!

Visited during Restsurant Week. Food was very good but the value just wasn't there. It appeared that we only received partial servings. Thoughtv we were at "Taste of Charlotte" instead of restaurant week. For dessert, we got cookies and cream. It consisted of three small PIECES of cookies and approximately one TEASPOON of ice cream. Serious!!! The ice cream was good however. Service was friendly but SLOW SLOW SLOW. We waited an extremely long time between courses even though we ordered all three at the beginning. The atmosphere was nice. After talking to several friends who had the same experience, we probably won't go back. Too many other options that offer a better value.

Pros - lots of choices on the Restaurant Week menu; perfect portion sizes; complimentary foccacia bread is delicious Cons - took almost 30 minutes to be seated after our scheduled reservation time; every group of girls that wanted to do restaurant week were there that night so I could barely hear anything people at my table were saying; service was very slow - overall dining experience took two hours and we could have easily been done in at least an hour and a half had we not had to wait for our table, then wait for our server who seemed to take an extra long time on every step of the dining process

We made a reservation through Open Table and confirmed with Bonterra the day before. We arrived at 6:30 and had to wait for an hour for our table. Other customers came in and were seated right away.mwhen I inquired about wait I was told because we booked online with Open Table, there were double bookings. She suggested we have a drink at the bar. The bar was two people deep so we kept waiting. Our experience was one we never plan to repeat with your restaurant as there are too many great restaurants that value their business.

Went here for Restaurant week. Sat at a very large table for 5 people. The menu was Pri Fix so that should have made it easier for our server as well as the restaurant as they can prep in the kitchen accordingly, just slap the stuff on the plate. Not tough. Our Server when he finally took everyone's order forgot my husband. My sister had to run after him and tell him he forgot someone. He never checked on us once we got our meal. And the desserts, for restaurant week, a joke. The entire experience made all of us in our party of 5 never want to return for a regular meal. I can eat okay food closer to home and with better service. You blew it Bonterra! Next time don't sign up for the Queens Feast!

This is a place that came highly recommended by a friend. So I hoped on the Queen's Feast opportunity to try it. This person is no longer my friend. Out of the 3 courses we experienced, the mussels were probably the best. Not the best mussels I've ever had, just better than the other things we had that evening. the lamb was okey, but fatty. the fried lobster tail lacked flavor. And the desert was more of a pallet cleanser. $100+ later, I am simply annoyed. All items came from the regular menu, so I can honestly say, I will NOT be back. This is a great place to drink (the wine selection is great). Food---pass!

We went for Queen's Fest as it's a wonderful opportunity to test a restaurant for future visits. They were very busy and possibly understaffed. The food was very good but very small. Only two scallops for an entree which is small even for an appetizer. The ice cream dessert was the size of a mellon scoop. While the Queen's Fest is certainly a discounted meal, my advice is don't participate if you can't serve at least a meal that won't send you away hungry. Serve a meal that will entice the customer to come back. Too bad, lost opportunity.
