Diner Reviews
  • "I'm not sure why my husband and I waited so long to return to Bonterra, but now that we have, we'll be back as often as possible. I love the look and feel of this church-turned-restaurant -- the decor is simple and airy, elegant but comfortable. The food has always been top-notch as well. I wanted the scallops (which I love but never cook at home) but also really wanted the sides that came with the chicken breast, and our server encouraged me to pick and choose from the menu and create exactly the meal I desired. He could not have been more helpful but was easy-going and not the least bit intrusive. My husband did the same mix-and-match for his meal and we both thought everything was delicious. Can't wait to go back to Bonterra!"

  • "Bonterra has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte, but I'm afraid I see them slipping a little. For the first time my NY Strip was not a very good cut and although they had Alexander Valley wines listed on the menus they weren't carrying them anymore and the waiter hadn't been told. All little things but I expect more from Bonterra. Going back in two weeks hopefully it was a one time thing."

  • "It has been at least 5 years since I was at Bonterra. The ambiance is amazing and probably the best in the city. The old church feel with tall ceilings, overlook, and basement have a charm unsurpassed in Charlotte. The food was good. Unfortunately for them, Charlotte has really stepped up the food game in the past five years. They are still serving the same food (which is good), but lacks originality. No nightly specials, no tuna, salmon, grouper. The only fish was snapper. I ended up with steak. It is a phenomenal steak, but not unique in preparation or sauces. The service was impeccable. We were there on a Saturday night and it was relatively empty. I hope they are able to rejuvenate their menu and I would give it 5 stars."

  • "The menu prices posted on Open Table site were considerably lower than than those printed on the restaurant menu. We alerted the waiter to this discrepancy and expressed our dismay. After consultation with his manager the waiter announced that they would charge the prices indicated on the web menu. Good and fair move. We had an enjoyable evening with good food. I picked an excellent Vouvray which mellowed me even further."

  • "This is a very nice restaurant in an old church building. It was a nice find for a visitor from out of town looking for a unique restaurant with some local touches. Its away from the main convention area which increased its appeal. Food was very good."

  • "What a gem! Made a last minute reservation and it was the best meal I've had in a very long time. Great place for a really nice date night."

  • "Bonterra is one of my favorite spots in Charlotte and it's one of the few restaurants that has never disappointed me. The service is impeccable and the menu is always interesting -- this time out, I had a pork dish served over sweet potato and collards with a maple-balsamic glaze and my partner had a hand-cut farfalle pasta with peas and fried oysters. Everything was excellent."

  • "Don't eat the calamari - greasy and soggy, and don't eat the Bew York Strip. The steak was so tough I could not eat it. They took it off the bill, but I went home hungry. Should not happen in a restaurant like this, with these prices. The lesson learnt is to eat the finer things only I guess... Fish is good, as is the Filet."

  • "Great atmosphere! Wasn't pleased with the set menu options for valentines day. Would have preferred to order from reg menu. When booking the reservation, was not aware of set menu. Smaller, limited portions were served. Food was good, not great. I felt we overpaid for what we got."

  • "We had a great time at Bonterra, lovely dinner. My wife refers to her meal as the best steak in town!"

  • "Resturant week. Arrived 30 minutes early, went to bar for wine. Bartender very helpful, wine selection exceptional. Seated on small table by columns. The table was put there for restaruant week. The host asked to take my wife's mink jacket and fur hat becaause table so small that there was no room to put it on the table. We assumed wrongly that it was for a coat check room. No flowers on table. All others had them. No salt and pepper either. We had to request salt and pepper. Bread was forgotten, after three request it arrived without the oil. Scallops had only two. Lava cake was cold inside. Looked and tasted like store bought. Food overpriced . When collectiing coats, we discovered public coat rack and hat was on floor."

  • "We were disappointed that the service was very slow. The servers seemed to have too many tables and were always on the floor. They were busy and hustling. It took 45 minutes from the time our appetizer plates were cleared and our entrees were brought to the table. It took 30 minutes from the clearing of dinner plates for dessert to be brought. Maybe too few cooks in the kitchen. The food was fabulous."

  • "This restaurant is located in an old church, and I love what they have done with the space. The portions were not huge, but for restaurant week, they seemed just right. Food was great, and the wine list was awesome!"

  • "Being new to the city of Charlotte, I must say I had my doubts when I found out that my dining experience was going to be at a church. To my surprise it's was more than I could have imagined. Very tasteful and romantic. That's exactly what I was looking for that evening. Thank you!"

  • "Food was OK, but not memorable. We made reservations way ahead of time, but were given even what the restauratant considered an inferior table, although we could have waited for something better. Mostly, were disappointed in the food."

  • "the food, while fine, was stingy!! Smallest Caesar salad ever and the two scallops served for the entree were more a mere appetizer. The dessert portions were equally miserly. Big mistake..all four diners vowed not to return due to the stingy portions."

  • "This restaurant boasts great food in an atmosphere that caters to foodies and the normal person. Starting off with a great cocktail or glass of wine begins the evening on the right note. The service and the food continues the excellence. Bonterra is an exceptional place for dining."

  • "A 4 diamond restaurant that was disappointing. Food was just ok. Service was very good and the ambience was nice. But overall not what we thought it would be. My husband had to send his steak back and not much flavor to it. We wouldn't go back."

  • "We went to Bonterra on a Tues w/a reservation for 6. They had our table ready. The prices were on par with other eclectic/high-end restaurants in the area, and so was the food! I loved the wine selections and menu choices. The only thing that was not as representative of the price was the service. Please do not get me wrong; it was not at all bad. It just was not a "wow" experience. One person in the group did not receive their appetizer and it was several minutes before the server noticed. Food was delivered to the wrong person, so we had to switch around plates. We had wine bottles and waited a few times for pours. Still; great experience and ambiance!"

  • "My husband and I tried a new restaurant for Queen's Feast, and were very impressed with Bonterra. Each of the food choices looked delicious and the meal we chose was excellent. The extensive wine by the glass menu was very nice and allowed us to choose new wines with dinner. We also were given a tour of the wine cellar and private collection of the owner and unexpectedly purchased a bottle for our wine cellar! We had a good time at the restaurant and look forward to going back."

  • "Food and atmosphere were great. Service was fair, at best, even taking into account it was a busy Restaurant Week Friday night. Server was at our table three times before we even had time to look at the menu and wine list-- and we weren't dallying. Then we basically didn't see him again. 3/4 of the way through the meal, we flagged him down to ask if they were serving bread because it appeared every other table had a bread basket. Bread arrived as we were taking our last bites and stone cold. Didn't ask if we wanted a second glass of wine until we were finished dinner. Never asked if we wanted to order coffee with our dessert. I'd like to think this was an aberration. The restaurant was full, but...."

  • "My boyfriend and i tried bonterra as part of restaurant week. Several friends recommended bonterra as nice place for romance and excellent food so we decided to give it a try. First bonterra used to be a church and atmosphere was lovely. The food was superb. I recommend the shrimp and grits and also the pork tenderloin medalions. My boy friend had the tomato and goat cheese souo which he said was sublime. A truly wonderful food experience."

  • "I visited for the first time with my husband during Restaurant Week. We had an 8.30pm table on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was buzzing with a mixture of couples, larger tables and parties. The food was excellent and the standard of service was very good despite how busy it was. The wine list is very extensive, especially for wines by the glass. I will definitely return."

  • "Enjoyed dinner at Bonterra for Restaurant Week following an afternoon there for the kick-off party for Charlotte Food & Wine Festival. Lots of great wines by the glass. Bonterra offered a variety of options from the menu for Restaurant Week, including a vegetarian pasta option, and the pork tenderloin with greens and sweet potatos (a feature on their regular menu). Both were excellent. Our server, Jeff, provided top-notch service, and we enjoyed talking with him about the restaurant, wine options, and the wine cellar dining area. We always recommend Bonterra to visitors to Charlotte. One of our favorites."

  • "This was the second time I have visited Bonterra wine room. The first time was for a special occasion. This time I took my fiancé during Charlotte restaurant week and was utterly disappointed with both the food and the service. when we arrived at the restaurant we were seated immediately, the problem was out waiter. He was very slow and tended to show favoritism to other tables. He never once offered to refill our water and we observed him filling other groups water glasses with the carafe sitting on the table. It often seemed like we were his last priority (I'm assuming because of our race). The food was terrible (over cooked salmon, cold couse couse and colder pork tenderloin). The best the about the experience was the appetizer."

  • "One two previous occasions I had been to Bonterra and was excited that they were participating in restaurant week. However, I think the entire staff (including the kitchen) was overwhelmed by the number of guests. Little things like having to wait for teaspoons when we ordered coffee (they were in the dishwasher) and the limited amount of mashed potatoes (which were very watery and tasteless) on the plate all said to me that the entire organization was overwhelmed. However, I hope my bad experience was a one time mishap. The restaurant is lovely and usually the food and service is wonderful. I was just disappointed Friday night because we had taken guests who were excited about experiencing this fine restaurant."
