  • "When you walk into a restaurant and four staff actively avoid making eye contact to welcome you, it's not a good sign. It was all downhill from there. I asked for a carafe of wine and only got a glass. I ordered the prosciutto appetizer and got the tomato soup. I thought I'd try it. My mistake - watery with zero seasoning. Likewise a tiny main course pasta with, perhaps, a scant teaspoon of cheese on top. Absolutely bland and flavourless. Chef, it is your job to taste everything!!! But I guess you were too busy visiting with your friends on a large, centre table. A little bit of food for three (we left hungry), a few glasses of wine (literally), and $175 later, and I have seen the last of Bonterra. You obviously don't want us there anyway."

The patio always fills up quickly over lunch hour, because in spite of how many tables they cram in to their outdoor space, there is no traffic noise, and they've done a lovely job with all the flowers and hanging baskets."

  • "Bonterra has one of the best patios in Calgary. It has developed organically over the years. Tasteful vegetation under a large pergola grace the eating area. Further protection from sun and the elements comes from retractable awnings (and a large umbrella). It is sheltered, intimate and inviting. By the way, the meals that we enjoyed were flawlessly prepared and served by someone who obviously enjoys the service industry. What more could you ask for?"

  • "Bonterra is one of my two favourite restaurants in Calgary. It has consistently offered great food and service and has the best outdoor patio in the city by far. Make reservations a good 45 minutes before the normal busy hours if you want to eat on the patio and have parking in the lot behind the restaurant. We had reservations for 11 for lunch. 11:15 would work too."

  • "It was a lovely day and the patio was awesome. Open air without having to to deal with wind or sun to bother us during lunch. Food was great, and even though bread is high in the Weight Watchers points plus system, I had two pieces of their lovely fresh baked offering! Worth the points! We were both happy with our menu choices: salmon salad and carbonara."

  • "Had to get on the patio before the end of summer so we got a reservation at 5:30 p.m. Server was attentive and funny, however, we got a table near the basement kitchen door and all night all we could smell was fish. Incidentally, I had the arctic char, which was fabulous but could have done without the odor the entire time. Will remember for next time. Food was great - only complaint was a goat cheese cheesecake that was just so-so. Always a treat to visit this venue."

  • "On a sunny, holiday Monday we headed to the beautiful patio at Bonterra for a late lunch date and a great pizza was on our minds. Unfortunately, the chefs did not agree to our vision and would not manage to get a pizza from the sister restaurant, Posto (same building), to meet our request. We had to order from the main menu; no big deal but rather disappointing as it is limited in choice and quite odd in ingredients. The pasta was absolutely disgusting! First, the $16 half dish of linguini was exactly 2 bites (pasta is the cheapest form of food available to restaurants!); secondly, the Butternut Squash ravioli was previously frozen, recooked, too sweet, w sour sauce and seriously inedible. We paid the bill and left. Arrivederci, Bonterra!"

Weather didn't cooperate but we still have a very nice meal. We did the family thing, ordering many smaller dishes and sharing with 4. Worked out well and price was a very reasonable 40+/person including a glass of wine for all. Loved the calamari, very different but very good"

  • "Ate here on Sunday. The service was horrible. Stood by hosting station for 10 mins before anyone acknowledge us and there were no other patrons in the entire place. When a host finally asked if we had been helped, I told him we were here for our 5 pm reservation. He snapped back "I asked if you'd been helped." Communicating with waitress was just as allusive. She seemed bored, bothered, and disinterested. Patio looked lovely and food was good but there are so many other fantastic places to eat in this city that actually care about their guests."

  • "We had great expectations after hearing an outstanding review, but were disappointed. Despite having made reservations the hostess attempted to seat us at a table that is awkwardly placed just outside the washrooms. When we refused that table she disappeared back to her station for several minutes to figure out where else to put us - even though there were many other available tables. The over-priced menu selection is very limited, and both of us were disappointed with the quality of the food. My chicken was overcooked and the risotto was tasteless, while my friend's pasta was definitely not to his liking. I'm not likely to return."

  • "It was a soggy, chilly day that called for a warm inviting place to dine and Bonterra fit the bill. We were seated in the upper section and our waiter was pleasant and efficient. There is a large selection of wine by the glass compared to many restaurants and we were pleased by our choices. We shared the prosciutto-wrapped fig special, a mouth-watering delight for starters. For mains I had the tenderloin special while my wife had the pumpkin ravioli. Both were delicious and my steak was done a perfect medium rare with carrot and chard accompaniment. My one shock came with the bill. I neglected to ask the price of the special and at $49 I feel the price was too high for a six ounce tenderloin. Overall though it was a great meal."

  • "Unfortunately, our experience at Bonterra was disappointing. From being unable to find my reservation, and then being unable to locate my guest, and then to forgetting my guest's food allergy, it was a series of missteps. It's not my first night there and so I was surprised that so many elements should have gone wrong in one evening. My guest and I finally connected an hour after she arrived, despite my repeated questions to the host and servers. I heard later the servers had all assumed my guest was a man. However, despite the first hour, and then the food allergy issue, I would like to stress that Bonterra did its best to make it right. Our service from that point forwards was impeccable and much of our bill was comped."
