  • "On a sunny, holiday Monday we headed to the beautiful patio at Bonterra for a late lunch date and a great pizza was on our minds. Unfortunately, the chefs did not agree to our vision and would not manage to get a pizza from the sister restaurant, Posto (same building), to meet our request. We had to order from the main menu; no big deal but rather disappointing as it is limited in choice and quite odd in ingredients. The pasta was absolutely disgusting! First, the $16 half dish of linguini was exactly 2 bites (pasta is the cheapest form of food available to restaurants!); secondly, the Butternut Squash ravioli was previously frozen, recooked, too sweet, w sour sauce and seriously inedible. We paid the bill and left. Arrivederci, Bonterra!"

  • "We made our reservation hoping that the patio would be open. Bonterra has a lovely patio and we always try to make it at least once a year. Weather didn't cooperate but we still have a very nice meal. We did the family thing, ordering many smaller dishes and sharing with 4. Worked out well and price was a very reasonable 40+/person including a glass of wine for all. Loved the calamari, very different but very good"

The service from the staff was very good, the only bad part about it was we came in at the street entrance and there seems to be a back entrance that seems to be where the host actually is and it took a long time to seat us from there.. The waiter we had was great and the food even better."

  • "Ate here on Sunday. The service was horrible. Stood by hosting station for 10 mins before anyone acknowledge us and there were no other patrons in the entire place. When a host finally asked if we had been helped, I told him we were here for our 5 pm reservation. He snapped back "I asked if you'd been helped." Communicating with waitress was just as allusive. She seemed bored, bothered, and disinterested. Patio looked lovely and food was good but there are so many other fantastic places to eat in this city that actually care about their guests."

  • "I took my sister here for her 21st Birthday. We both enjoy good food, especially Italian food done right. The menu looked fabulous as well as the desserts. Everything we ordered was very tasty and took our taste buds to Italy! The setting in the restaurant is very romantic and is well suited for special events."

  • "We had great expectations after hearing an outstanding review, but were disappointed. Despite having made reservations the hostess attempted to seat us at a table that is awkwardly placed just outside the washrooms. When we refused that table she disappeared back to her station for several minutes to figure out where else to put us - even though there were many other available tables. The over-priced menu selection is very limited, and both of us were disappointed with the quality of the food. My chicken was overcooked and the risotto was tasteless, while my friend's pasta was definitely not to his liking. I'm not likely to return."

  • "It was a soggy, chilly day that called for a warm inviting place to dine and Bonterra fit the bill. We were seated in the upper section and our waiter was pleasant and efficient. There is a large selection of wine by the glass compared to many restaurants and we were pleased by our choices. We shared the prosciutto-wrapped fig special, a mouth-watering delight for starters. For mains I had the tenderloin special while my wife had the pumpkin ravioli. Both were delicious and my steak was done a perfect medium rare with carrot and chard accompaniment. My one shock came with the bill. I neglected to ask the price of the special and at $49 I feel the price was too high for a six ounce tenderloin. Overall though it was a great meal."

  • "Don't get me wrong, the food quality was above average dinner hot spots, but when I compare the menu and food quality to what I had when I ate there last fall, it wasn't even comparable. I ordered the chicken with risotto - very average and small portion size, and my colleague had rabbit pasta - this was a far cry from the breaded rabbit they used to have as an entree option. Ambience, and friendliness of staff was great. Wine prices were reasonable, but the food was subpar for the price and in comparison to my first visit. The waitress recommended the calamari and veal meatballs for an appetizer, meat balls = great, calamari = rubbery....unfortunately, food quality was my only complaint"

  • "Unfortunately, our experience at Bonterra was disappointing. From being unable to find my reservation, and then being unable to locate my guest, and then to forgetting my guest's food allergy, it was a series of missteps. It's not my first night there and so I was surprised that so many elements should have gone wrong in one evening. My guest and I finally connected an hour after she arrived, despite my repeated questions to the host and servers. I heard later the servers had all assumed my guest was a man. However, despite the first hour, and then the food allergy issue, I would like to stress that Bonterra did its best to make it right. Our service from that point forwards was impeccable and much of our bill was comped."

  • "one of the nicest inner city patios. food was good. It did seem like they were short on servers. I was surprised that the inside of the restaurant was almost empty as i figured it must be full and explained the lack of servers outside. We did not get on picking a wine as soon as we sat and therefore had to wait 10 min to order it, and almost as long to get it."

  • "We chose to eat inside instead of on the patio so that we could get quicker service for a Friday lunch - lunch service was fast, and our server Sam was great. I always order veal meatballs and they didn't disappoint. The lamb panino was good, although the chicken panino is much better. It would be great if half portions were available for the paninos since they are quite filling."

The menu there changes often, had the mushroom bruschetta which was FANTASTIC! and the Panino pork-loin sandwich was kind of greasy but also very tasty.   • "Booked a table for 14 including 2 toddlers and a baby. Had no problem getting the reservation. Bonaterra's was very accommodating of small children. Ordered the prosciutto and the wild boar, food was good but not the best that I have had from Bonaterra's. Tiramisu was fantastic. Server performed adequately but was not engaging or memorable. Bonaterra has the best outdoor patio I have seen yet in Calgary; you don't even feel like you are downtown."

  • "Very much enjoyed the 'Tonno' on the heated veranda. Pleasant and efficient service did not overshadow the conversation and the tuna was done medium and delicately seasoned. The greens and fruit really brought out the taste of the tuna as opposed to an over-powering sauce. Watch out for the peppery bread sticks!"

  • "This is an adorable restaurant. It is large and cozy at the same time. There is a lot of stonework to give it an old world feeling. The server treated us like he'd known us forever. He was accomodating and ever so helpful with menu choices (and substitutions for a pregnant woman). The food was phenomenal! The portions were great. The flavors were outstanding. I felt like I'd stepped into an Italian grandmother's kitchen."

  • "I had never been here before and booked a reservation for my birthday. We walked in through the door off the main avenue.... We stood awkwardly ... Not knowing the 'main door' was actually the one off the patio/ parking lot. Nobody addressed us, other guests were staring at us. Uncomfortable. We made our way to the middle where the hostess told us she was busy.. Ok. Went to the front . Didn't ask if we had a reservation, looked at the computer for a few minutes... Finally seated. Hostess told us what's good. Awesome. Ask about gnocchi ... Told it's out of season??? The food was great. Bison carpaccio!the best I've had. Calami was called "trail mix" by our table from the mass and random ingredients . Tuna dish melt in your mouth amazing."
