Bonterra is located in a renovated 100 year old church in the historic Southend District of Charlotte. Sommelier & Owner John Duncan has created a stunning array of 200 wines by-the-glass and an additional 300 selections from the cellar which comprises one of the largest wine lists in Charlotte.   • "Visited during Restsurant Week. Food was very good but the value just wasn't there. It appeared that we only received partial servings. Thoughtv we were at "Taste of Charlotte" instead of restaurant week. For dessert, we got cookies and cream. It consisted of three small PIECES of cookies and approximately one TEASPOON of ice cream. Serious!!! The ice cream was good however. Service was friendly but SLOW SLOW SLOW. We waited an extremely long time between courses even though we ordered all three at the beginning. The atmosphere was nice. After talking to several friends who had the same experience, we probably won't go back. Too many other options that offer a better value."

  • "Pros - lots of choices on the Restaurant Week menu; perfect portion sizes; complimentary foccacia bread is delicious Cons - took almost 30 minutes to be seated after our scheduled reservation time; every group of girls that wanted to do restaurant week were there that night so I could barely hear anything people at my table were saying; service was very slow - overall dining experience took two hours and we could have easily been done in at least an hour and a half had we not had to wait for our table, then wait for our server who seemed to take an extra long time on every step of the dining process"

  • "We made a reservation through Open Table and confirmed with Bonterra the day before. We arrived at 6:30 and had to wait for an hour for our table. Other customers came in and were seated right away.mwhen I inquired about wait I was told because we booked online with Open Table, there were double bookings. She suggested we have a drink at the bar. The bar was two people deep so we kept waiting. Our experience was one we never plan to repeat with your restaurant as there are too many great restaurants that value their business."

  • "Went here for Restaurant week. Sat at a very large table for 5 people. The menu was Pri Fix so that should have made it easier for our server as well as the restaurant as they can prep in the kitchen accordingly, just slap the stuff on the plate. Not tough. Our Server when he finally took everyone's order forgot my husband. My sister had to run after him and tell him he forgot someone. He never checked on us once we got our meal. And the desserts, for restaurant week, a joke. The entire experience made all of us in our party of 5 never want to return for a regular meal. I can eat okay food closer to home and with better service. You blew it Bonterra! Next time don't sign up for the Queens Feast!"

  • "This is a place that came highly recommended by a friend. So I hoped on the Queen's Feast opportunity to try it. This person is no longer my friend. Out of the 3 courses we experienced, the mussels were probably the best. Not the best mussels I've ever had, just better than the other things we had that evening. the lamb was okey, but fatty. the fried lobster tail lacked flavor. And the desert was more of a pallet cleanser. $100+ later, I am simply annoyed. All items came from the regular menu, so I can honestly say, I will NOT be back. This is a great place to drink (the wine selection is great). Food---pass!"

  • "We went for Queen's Fest as it's a wonderful opportunity to test a restaurant for future visits. They were very busy and possibly understaffed. The food was very good but very small. Only two scallops for an entree which is small even for an appetizer. The ice cream dessert was the size of a mellon scoop. While the Queen's Fest is certainly a discounted meal, my advice is don't participate if you can't serve at least a meal that won't send you away hungry. Serve a meal that will entice the customer to come back. Too bad, lost opportunity."

The food were salty, and the service was professional (but not friendly). Unfortunately, I don't have much incentives to come back to this place. There are plenty of competitors in Charlotte for fine dining that I will frequent more often."

  • "We had a good dinner at Bonterra but the water was unfiltered and had a very strong cholrine smell. When we spoke to the owner - after having finished our meal - he was very rude and said that bottled water was available for purchase if we did not like city water. It was not only the answer but even more the rudeness that really turned us off. By the way a brita filter is all he would need. All in all a pity because we had a good meal but will not be going back!"

My wife really likes it, because its a really unusual building (an old church) with very high ceilings, lots of thick trim around doors and windows, light gray painted walls - and white table clothes. I guess we don't go to many restaurants with white table clothes. We were not disappointed with the ambiance at Bonterra. The service was very nice- not rushing us, but making sure we didn't wait too long. The food, however, was a tad disappointing. Ordering the Yellowfin Shashumi starter and the Scallop entree, I was hoping to be impressed. NOT. But, in all fairness, we are not usually impressed with fancy restaurants. Maybe I'm not a foodie, but I feel we cook better tasting food at home. "

  • "I'm not sure why my husband and I waited so long to return to Bonterra, but now that we have, we'll be back as often as possible. I love the look and feel of this church-turned-restaurant -- the decor is simple and airy, elegant but comfortable. The food has always been top-notch as well. I wanted the scallops (which I love but never cook at home) but also really wanted the sides that came with the chicken breast, and our server encouraged me to pick and choose from the menu and create exactly the meal I desired. He could not have been more helpful but was easy-going and not the least bit intrusive. My husband did the same mix-and-match for his meal and we both thought everything was delicious. Can't wait to go back to Bonterra!"

  • "Bonterra has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Charlotte, but I'm afraid I see them slipping a little. For the first time my NY Strip was not a very good cut and although they had Alexander Valley wines listed on the menus they weren't carrying them anymore and the waiter hadn't been told. All little things but I expect more from Bonterra. Going back in two weeks hopefully it was a one time thing."

  • "It has been at least 5 years since I was at Bonterra. The ambiance is amazing and probably the best in the city. The old church feel with tall ceilings, overlook, and basement have a charm unsurpassed in Charlotte. The food was good. Unfortunately for them, Charlotte has really stepped up the food game in the past five years. They are still serving the same food (which is good), but lacks originality. No nightly specials, no tuna, salmon, grouper. The only fish was snapper. I ended up with steak. It is a phenomenal steak, but not unique in preparation or sauces. The service was impeccable. We were there on a Saturday night and it was relatively empty. I hope they are able to rejuvenate their menu and I would give it 5 stars."

  • "The menu prices posted on Open Table site were considerably lower than than those printed on the restaurant menu. We alerted the waiter to this discrepancy and expressed our dismay. After consultation with his manager the waiter announced that they would charge the prices indicated on the web menu. Good and fair move. We had an enjoyable evening with good food. I picked an excellent Vouvray which mellowed me even further."

The service is impeccable and the menu is always interesting -- this time out, I had a pork dish served over sweet potato and collards with a maple-balsamic glaze and my partner had a hand-cut farfalle pasta with peas and fried oysters. Everything was excellent."

  • "Don't eat the calamari - greasy and soggy, and don't eat the Bew York Strip. The steak was so tough I could not eat it. They took it off the bill, but I went home hungry. Should not happen in a restaurant like this, with these prices. The lesson learnt is to eat the finer things only I guess... Fish is good, as is the Filet."
