Diner Reviews
  • "Tried Bonta again after a review in the local newspaper. Service has improved markedly (no more 'disappearing' servers - very attentive service without being intrusive. While the menu seemed smaller there is a good variety of pastas, meat and seafood dishes. Reasonably sized portions (i.e. not the 'food for 3' often found at restaurants), carefully prepared. A bit too much salt for me but my husband love the food."

  • "It was a delight to walk into such a welcoming place, both in terms of ambience and a great greeting. The food was very good. I started with fried calamari; a little tough and not well-breaded. Then clams over linguine;excellent. Bread is made on the premises; good. Finished with chocolate cake; excellent. Restaurant is just off the interstate; easy to get to. It is south of the historic town of Portsmouth but away from the hustle and and crowds of that town. This is a great place to relax and unwind."

  • "This restaurant was in a very nice wooded setting. The ambience was great for a romantic dinner for two as well as for small groups. The food was wonderful and had great selections on the menu. The décor was very appealing. I will definitely return to this place."

  • "European flair and comfortable for everyone. The food is fantastic. But you can read my full review in the Portsmouth Herald on Thursday, April 10 because I'm a professional!"

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Bonta, seated before the fireplace and served by excellent, professional waitstaff. The food was tasty and well-prepared. We were not rushed to finish, but rather lingered and enjoyed our wine, appetizers, main course, and dessert - the latter being particularly beautifully presented. Because it was a special occasion, we didn't object to what seemed like high prices for the entrees. A very nice dining experience."

  • "I found Bonta on a web search. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are very friendly. The food is delicious and I was surprised to hear that they make all their pasta, bread, and dessert in-house every day. It's not your everyday type of restaurant, with higher than average prices, however you won't be disappointed. Give it try for a lovely evening out."

  • "Overall I had a great experience at Bonta. The atmosphere was very quiet and relaxed. I felt that the servers were very efficient and check up on us appropriately. We asked about the wine list and the server was very knowledgeable. I got the butternut squash soup and lobster raviolis. Both were delicious! The first glance the soup was a bit small but it is very rich so I found the size to be appropriate. The raviolis were also very good! Great place that I would definitely go to again and recommend to friends. The only think that could be improved was the bread. I loved the pita but found the bread to be a bit bland and would be better heated up a bit."

  • "What a great environment this is to have a nice dinner in an energetic environment. Bonta is elegant but not intimidating. The staff makes you feel right at home and are so great. Food was excellent. Got the meatballs as an appetizer which were amazing. Scallops fresh and yummy and pasta is so fresh and light. Plan to go back for many more special occasions!"

  • "When I booked this restaurant for Valentines Day I should have read the fine print. I was expecting my choice of the menu - I was in the mood for Italian. That evening it was a set menu - the food was very good, but I struggled to fit the option to my appetite. The soup was lukewarm and steak overcooked but they quickly fixed that. All in all I still think its a nice restaurant."

  • "We love Bonta. We used to go there often. It's not quite the same without the superb service Alec offered but it's still very nice. The food is excellent. But the personal attention and service is not quite as good. Valentines Day was nice but felt a little rushed and impersonal."

  • "First time at Bonta's our meal was excellent! Loved the linguini with clams. Our meatball appetizer was delicious. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and helpful. The environment was relaxing, pleasant and enjoyable. We sat near the fireplace and had a romantic dinner. Will definitely go back. Everything was perfect."

  • "There were three other occupied tables when we arrived and it was 30 min. before Hannah took our app. order. The antipasto freddo, was the smallest antipasto and not worth the $15 price tag. We tried to order a bottle of Malbec, of which they offered three. 10 minutes later we were told they had NO Malbec in stock. We could get Malbec by the glass, but there was not enough left to pour two glasses. Lorraine accepted that but I ordered a popular 7 zins Zinfandel. 10 minutes later I was told they were also out of that Zin. They brought a bottle of 2012 Cline Zinfandel and advised it was a "far better wine than" my choice... My duck breast was very good. I was not surprised to see the $32 wine charge. It was corrected, however."

  • "Pasta is excellent here. All homemade. Second time in the last 6 months and pasta dishes have been excellent. Monk fish on one of the pastas was a bit overcooked. Appetizers were very good also. Bonta used to have a bad reputation among the locals, but the pricing the food is very good now."

  • "Unfortunately the food was terrible. The waiter never checked to see if our food was good, he never refilled our drinks, he completely dismissed us. I am so disappointed."

  • "I used to love Bonta. It is pricey but I have always had a fantastic experience so I thought it was worth it. This experience does not have me coming back anytime soon. We were seated with menus but no wine list; we had ask our waiter for it. Our waiter was very condescending and didn't make us feel welcome. Our appetizer plates were cleared in between apps, therefore when our next apps came (along with the bread, finally) we had no plates to eat from. The food was good but not outstanding like I have remembered it. In order for me to warrant an expensive restaurant, the food needs to be delicious and it wasn't. I'm sorry to say I won't be back anytime soon. Mainly because of the service, secondly because the food did not wow me. :("

  • "Can't wait to go back! Atmosphere: Excellent. We went on a Sunday which they said is normally a very quiet day. Very tasteful dining room. Appetizers: (1)Slow roasted shrimp (2)Meatballs. Both were terrific. Salad: We split the beet salad with arugula. We devoured it. Main course: We both ordered just pasta entrees but they had a nice selection of others. Homemade pasta. Unique options. Very flavorful. Excellent. We were stuffed but ordered Tiramisu anyway. Smooth, creamy, light, tall. Strawberry on top. I forget what the lady fingers were marinaded in but it was excellent. Wine: Monsanto(?) Italian Chianti. Waitress and bar manager recommended it and it did not disappoint."

  • "Serving size great as was food quality. We dine here often and are pleased with the several improvements. Lower score for service was due to drink being spilled on one of the diners at our table. Bonta is our favorite restaurant in the region, primarily for the exceptional hospitality shown by Al, Debbie and the wait staff."

  • "We arrived early, but were seated immediately. It took quite a while for the waiter (who was very personable) to arrive, and that seemed to be the theme of the night. He actually forgot to bring us the bread basket, which I had to ask for when our meal (yes, meal) arrived. The Antipasto Freddo appetizer was excellent. The Pollo alla Parmigiana ($25) was awful. The chicken was dry and tasteless, and the pasta (supposedly homemade) had the taste and consistency of store bought and was swimming in a pool of watery sauce. The Gnocchi alla Romana ($16 on the pasta portion of the menu, and actually quite delicious) did not contain any pasta, and nowhere on the menu does it state that. All in all a very disappointing culinary experiemce."

  • "The food continues to improve. So does the service, though there are still times when the greeting at the reservation stand is lukewarm at best. And so is the assignment of reserved tables; penultimate time we were shown to the table closest to the reservation table, right near where arriving diners were lining up, when there were many empty and vastly more preferable tables farther into the restaurant, to one of which we were shown, though a bit reluctantly, as if the reservation clerk were too lazy to want to walk there. There are times, as well, when the main courses come out of the kitchen before one has finished appetizers, and the servers are not sufficiently trained to turn right around and instead plunk down the main courses."

  • "We sat down and had to wait 15 minutes for a waiter to come to our table and then he blamed the hostess for not telling him. Then, we asked for any recommendations on the menu and was abruptly told he doesn't eat anything on it. The food was just ok for the high prices. Portions were small. Cost over $200 for 2 meals and a couple drinks. You can get a better experience elsewhere for 1/2 the price."

  • "Caught Bonta on the way back from a Celtics game in Boston--it was much better than the North End all around--the food was better than ever and the portions were very generous. Very attentive service capped by an opportunity to discuss the Celtics performance w/ "Coach" Neri who came out from behind the bar to great guests in the dining rm. Anxious to return for some of the best food in the Seacoast."

  • "Bonta offers wonderful atmosphere and ambiance, with a much less cluttered feeling than anything in Portsmouth. The four others in our party felt their meals were great. Mine (the veal entree) seemed overly caked in a type of crust and was somewhat dry and disappointing, especially compared to other meals I have had there. Overall, still a great place to relax and enjoy the food and the surroundings."

  • "Good place to bring small groups, as it isnot a big restaurant, couple dates, catching up with friends. Bar is usually full, but ourtable was ready early for our reservation. Good deal. Food was good, chicken dry, apps delish! Service was ok, on the slower side. After the meals were dropped off, no on is sight to put cheese on a pasta dish. We go back every few months to check out menu, food has been inconsistantly good."

  • "We asked for a quiet table away from a draft. We were seated in front of a just right gas fireplace (very pretty - not your usual bad gas log). They had several large groups but used portable screens to break up the room and the sound was just right. The waitress was very in tune with our timing. The food was quite good (2 salmon, 1 clams, 1 lasagna). The calamari appetizer was a hit with of us. Reasonably priced wine by the bottle worked well for us. The Tillia Malbec was quite nice. The room is beautiful and was quite festive. All in all, a perfect holiday rendezvous with friends."

  • "Ambiance very nice, but attention to detail missing... several wall hangings off center. Food quality: quite average relative to menu pricing. Portions: reasonable. Presentation: not commensurate with price. Service: average. Wine list: good An experience that was O.K., but did not match expectation."

  • "The food, service and atmosphere was perfect for celebrating my husband's 49th birthday. We love this restaurant and would go back again! The staff is very welcoming and the food is prepared perfectly. The staff make you feel like you are sitting down to a family dinner. We sat right next to the fireplace, it was wonderful."

  • "My husband and I have talked about trying Bonta. for years. But, we don't go out to eat much and we've never gotten there. We ended up there for Thanksgiving after deciding too late to get reservations at the restaurants more well known for their Thanksgiving dinner. We are happy it turned out that way, because we finally got to eat at Bonta! While Thanksgiving dinner isn't the best measure of the food at an Italian restaurant, it is quite obvious the chef is very skilled at blending seasonings to create delicious layers of flavor in every bite. We checked out the regular menu and we can't wait to get back there to try the Italian dishes. The owners were there in great presence, making sure all customers were satisfied and happy. Try it!"
