We had a wonderful meal at Bonsoiree. Because of the length of the dinner (we had the 9-course meal) and the cost, I would definitely say this is a great place for special occasions. Since there are no choices on the menu, diners coming must have an open mind to all foods. The presentation of food, the service, and, of course, the taste of all the dishes was superb!

It was really exciting. It was a 9 course meal, but i felt 2 of the courses missed the mark. I guess that's why you get 9 of them! They are changing chefs so i don't know what it will look like but if you got the cash, its totally worth going.

I realize that Bonsoiree is not going to be in business after this week, but I was extremely disappointed in both the meal and the service on Sunday. We had been to the restaurant before and found the food and the service to be wonderful!! The waiter was not extremely knowledgeable about wine or the food not did he seem very interested in being our waiter. The spacing of food was not good; we would get a glass of wine a good fifteen minutes before the food came which meant that by the time we got the food, the wine was gone. Some of the food was fairly tasteless (i.e., the pork) and the salmon was a bit fishy. I wouldn't come back again even if the restaurant was still going to be in business.

Fantastic meal. We were celebrating a special occasion. Earlier that weekend we had been to Topolobambo. While both were GREAT and very different, we don't often dine at this level so I can't help but compare the two: Bonsoiree's foie gras was superior, the service was more professional and personable, and the decor more up to date than Topolo. Topolo's menu was a bit more adventurous with complex and unexpected ingredient pairings although some of those were probably lost on my heathen palate, overall I have to give a slight edge to Bonsoiree, though I might be biased because its right in our neighborhood and we could walk there.

Wonderful food, in an off-the-beaten-path locale. Loved their BYO, which unfortunately is going away with their new ticket format. Got to go for their best of the best tasting menu before they changed to the new chef/format.

I had dinner at Bonsoiree with my daughter who is a vegetarian. We were there on a Sunday which is market day. It was great fun to be surprised at each course. The chef prepared seven incredible courses, each with its own theme and multi leveled flavors. It is rare to find such innovative vegetarian food in a restaurant that also prepares fabulous meat and fish. A wonderful dining experience.

I would return for the food. The food was amazingly well conceived and executed. Each plate was a work of art to the eye and palate. My girlfriend and I had the 7 course menu with wine paring and enjoyed the combinations of summer dishes and wines. The service was quite bad. I had to ask for a number of basic things like water refill and an extra fork - however, no one was around to ask. Perhaps the wait staff was missing a person or two? We waited almost 15 mins for our second course after first course plates were removed so I needed to ask for less time between courses. Lastly, our waiters were not very enthusiastic about the food. All descriptions were given very matter-of-fact. A little more friendliness would have helped.

We were fortunate to enjoy one of master chef Shin Thompson's last Underground Dinners at Bonsoiree in the peaceful and airy enclosed back patio. It was an amazing meal - each course was as incredible and delicious as it was full of artistry and beauty. As always, the staff offered impeccable service. We will certainly miss Shin Thompson's Bonsoiree but we look forward to what the new chefs will have to offer when Bonsoiree opens again in the fall. THANK YOU, Shin!

  • We went on a Sunday evening

We went on a Sunday evening for a 7 course meal. Although I appreciate not being rushed, I really found the timing of the courses to be uneven. The courses themselves, for the most part, were not terribly inventive or memorable, save one of them - a delicious creamy scallop topped with caviar. It started with a lamb tartar which wasn't terribly flavorful. The rabbit course was just bad. We weren't sure if it was the preparation or the meat itself, but it was dry and unseasoned. One of the 7 courses (before the dessert) was a flan which just didn't seem to fit. Maybe this was just an off night, or maybe they are more focused on reconcepting, but either way, it was a disappointment.

Similar experience to earlier poster. Told them it would be a birthday dinner, restaurant called to confirm reservation and noted that it was a birthday dinner and then nothing from the restaurant all evening to recognize a birthday dinner. OK if they don't recognize birthdays as a policy but then don't make a point to note that it is a birthday celebration on the confirmation. Had the 4 course option. First course was quite good (chilled squash soup), second also quite good (scallop and crab in a scallop shell), third was a huge disappointment - rabbit two ways that was relatively flavorless. Had the recommended foie gras supplement which was OK but not memorable. Dessert was similarly unmemorable, cheesecake with sorbet.

We visited Bonsoiree for the first time on a weekend when they were doing their "underground greatest hits" menu. We had the wine pairing. All courses were delicious, with a few absolute standouts: the scallop/crab pairing; the beef dish; the banana ice cream. Wines were varied and well chosen (though perhaps long on sparkling wines). Other tables had BYO, which would be the more economical option--Bonsoiree is not inexpensive. Will be curious how this restaurant does with the (fabulous) team from Aria. Probably not a great place for a big group, as the rooms are tight, but great for 2-4. Fun, inconspicuous location, too.

Very disappointed with the new menu...Able to really enjoy only 1 course out of 5.Next day I was dinning there again with my friends.I wanted to cancel, but I was promised a new IMPROVED menu.Instead got even more disappointed with the food and the new room in the back, which has absolutely no ambiance.VERY plain table with one tiny candle, and a very SAD patio with no flowers, only some old disarrayed patio furniture.I told the waiter 3 times that my friend was vegetarian not vegan, but still he was only served tiny portions of veggies.Later I finally asked for some fish for him but again with no response. In addition my friends told the waiter few times that it was my Birthday but he wouldn't even acknowledged that.BAD experience for $680 !!

The "underground" dinners continue to inspire. There is rarely a false step in invention, composition and execution (although we had a yummy but mushy langostine this last time out). It's great that you can choose between BYOB and their (limited) offerings. Or do a combo of both! Desserts blend semi-sweet and savory and are perfect cappers. Servers are great looking guys (as are most of the men in the kitchen-- Nice hiring Chef!) The enclosed "sun porch" in back adds way more seats and another character to the dining experience. You will love this place not matter when you go.

I am rating this restaurant as very good because the food was amazing! unfortunately other aspects of the experience were lacking. We opted for the full nine course menu with the drink pairings. What turned us off first was when the waiter tried to sell us a couple of upgrades after we agreed to the $150.00 prix-fixe. Then he seemed to interrupt every time a good conversation was going but wasn't very knowledgable about the dishes served-frustrating. The dining room is nice, but nothing special. The worst part was the climate control. We went from freezing cold to hot about 10 times during the course of our meal. I recommend dressing in layers if you go! If the ambiance was better this would be one of the best dinners i've had in chicago.

Some dishes literally had only one quarter tablespoon of key ingredients.some dishes were hit or miss on the flavor and the interior design is drab. I got charged for a foie gras dish. Even though they forgot to serve me it even though they upselled me on it.then I was told it was served to me and when I asked them to verify with the chef they deducted the charge with no apology for the triple faux pas.needless to say i will not be back.
