A word from Bodega Negra
A partnership between TAO Group, Serge Becker (Miss Lily’s, La Esquina) and his UK partners, Will Ricker and Ed Spencer Churchill, Bodega Negra has crossed the pond, bringing its menu of modern Mexican fare to New York City’s Dream Downtown.

The menu consists of original items created by Chef Michael Armstrong, as well as a small selection of signature dishes available at the UK location. Chef Armstrong’s menu draws inspiration from the diverse regions of Mexico, and is designed for sharing, ranging from small plates such as ceviches, tacos, and salads, to large-format offerings.Continued

  • "An overpriced rip off. The food simply wasn't good-- ranged from blah (chicken tinga tacos) to awful (oxtail empanadas). Drinks were passable but nothing i would order again. It's as dark as everyone else complains-- cavelike. Don't go."

  • "Hype and the food is surprisingly good! (Except for the deserts, which were a miss). But the appetizers and entrees are excellent. We went there with a group of 6 people for restaurant week. We had a reservation - seated of course 20 minutes late... ok. Our waitress was nice. I'd like to say I'll be back - since I really liked the food - but I felt so rushed to finish my plate that I am not so sure. We were still eating our appetizers when they brought the entrees!!! So we had to send them back. The busboys kept trying to take our plate when we are not even half way through. Almost all of us had to fight, at least 3 to 5 times to keep our plates. It got not only intrusive (since it interrupts a conversation) but also very unpleasant."

  • "The food and service were great! It is really dark. The two friends I was with really had a hard time seeing the menu and their food. They both wear glasses. I had the shrimp ceviche which was nicely flavored and for entree I had the amish chicken. The chicken was seasoned to perfection and a good portion. I was stuffed after several bites. I would definitely be coming back."

  • "Too dark. We had to use our iPhones to read the menu. Music way to loud, and the noise level got louder as time went by. Part of the dining experience is chatting with your dinner guests. We were shouting to one another. More like a club atmosphere than a restaurant. And whoever thought that surrounding the bathroom stalls in mirrors was a good idea - yikes - NO. Would not go back."

  • "Great food and great pricing, we did the Prix fix menu at 75 for a group of 12 and we had more than enough food which was absolutely delicious! highly recommending the corn on the cob and the bone in rib eye, they are to die for! We were seated next to another bday party, all girls, who were very loud in their conversations and that was not very enjoyable, also they were playing some sort of rock variety over the speakers which we really disliked. Not only that it was a bit too loud and especially having the speaker right above our table, but it was really interfering with our conversations, and just really annoying; we expected Latino music to be played given that is it a Mexican restaurant. pls play softer music! not screeching rock"

  • "The food is so good and their assistant of unique margaritas is great as well."

  • "A gem in a City that lacks really good Mexican cuisine. Fabulous menu from guacamole appetizer to leche dessert. Bar is stocked with the best tequilas. Service is wonderful."

  • "I had been to the Bodega Negra in London, and loved it so much I wanted to try it here. Food was great again, and drinks as well! Service was awesome, it was almost like the server was reading our mind and we didn't have to ask for anything that we needed. Also, the cafe is a good option for after dinner drinks and quesadillas if you don't want to do the full sit down thing."

  • "Considering that it is the Meatpacking and everything is overpriced and overrated- its good food, drinks and relaxed atmosphere where NYers can actually enjoy their city!"

  • "The venue was cold. We had Shrimp ceviche which was not only very cold but the chef used more ketchup than any other ingredient. The salmon started out delicious but as I was finishing, the salt was drenched on a corner. I felt as though I was eating a spoon of salt. The chile poblano was the worst. My husband only had one bite and left the rest. The server had us help him move the dishes. The waitress brought the check without us requesting it. I would never return much less recommend this restaurant."

  • "I met a friend here during restaurant week, when we arrived it was empty, after about an hour it was full and the bus boy hovered around so close and so often I felt he was dining with us, and waitress pushed drinks, and then the bill...as finishing the last of our drinks the maître de [host] came to ask us to leave because he had other reservations - we could go to the bar!!! (PS.. Bar was full) This alone would not have been so terrible but for the fact that when leaving by way of the ladies, there were PLENTIFUL tables just beyond the main seating area. I'm a native New Yorker and have been to 100's of restaurants and NEVER been treated in this manner (Alas we did not order from the Restaurant week menu)"

  • "I have lived in New York for 3 months now and this was by far my worst dining experience. We arrived 7 minutes after our 8:15pm booking and we were informed by the Maitre D that they were just waiting for a couple of tables to finish up and please take a seat in the bar. An hour later we were still waiting for our table. No one came to apologise or give us updates, we were simply left there and had to do the chasing. Each time we asked, they were very curt and just seemed to act like this was the norm. Finally at 9:20pm we were seated. The food was fine but nothing exceptional. The restaurant is also very dark (we had to use our mobile light to help the waiter read the menu!)."

  • "The food was excellent. However, the restaurant was extremely dark and loud. While pleasant, our waitress was extremely hard to track down. She never came back to check on us and the entire serving staff seemed confused. For example, after our entree one waiter came by and took our plates and gave us new forks. Then a few minutes later another waiter came by and took the fork. Overall the food might get me to go back, but I expect better service from a place like this."

  • "Great evening. Fantastic food. We had to wait a long time for our table but they did give us a free round of drinks and desserts to compensate so overall we were very happy."

  • "Showed up on time for my reservation but clients were running half an hour behind. Was told by the host ( tall, dark male) to let him know when everyone arrives and we will be seated. In the meantime, my client and I ordered appetizers and drinks at the bar. The rest of clients showed up and the same host told me it would be 45 minutes before he can seat us. 2 1/2 hours later, he did not seat us for dinner nor did he seem to care. I asked him more than three times about an approximate wait and he stuck to "45 minutes". I did advise the management of this and they were very professional and apologetic. I felt embarrassed and let down; I will not be back and would caution anyone going here for professional dinner to be aware."

  • "We had a 9:15pm reservation and we weren't seated until 10:15pm. This is partly understandable, given it was a saturday night. Would have expected the hostess and waitstaff to be friendly, but they were the opposite. When we got up from the bar for the last time because we were starving and ready to leave, they finally seated us. That said, the food was spectacular and the drinks were out of this world. The bartender was friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is vibrant and fun."

  • "Great place and yummy foods..the steak tacos and chicken tostadas were very yummy!! The Don Huevo desert is amazing and make sure you get ur phone ready to videotape it when it comes out!! Well worth every penny!!"

  • "Very dark room, which in some circles might seem atmospheric, but when it's actually hard to see anything, it gave me pause. Service was very warm and friendly, food good and they have a nice range of mixed drinks and beers. Gets very noisy by 8pm"

  • "Came here with another couple and really enjoyed the food and ambience. We decided to order tapas style which turned out to be plenty of food for 4. My fav - the skirt steak empanadas!"

  • "We went for early dinner at 6 PM and the place was quite. We liked that. Food was really good, especially guacamole and cevice and our server was super sweet and attentive. He made our evening."

  • "Loved the ambiance and decor of this Mexican chic gem. Service was attentive and steady. Menu can get pricey as the plates are small and not "family style" as the gentleman advised. More on the tapas side of dishes- in that sense yes, made to pick and share. If you are hungry def suggest getting an entree rather than 5 small plates to taste. Tostaditas were delish and the Pork Belly tacos were Superb! Desert special was amazing- great for the bday celebration we had! Will def rtn!"

  • "We loved the dark woods, funky lightbulbs and rotating copper sculpture. I got the GulfSide cocktail, great absinthe and mezcal concoction; they didn't stint on the booze. Guacamole was smooth and fresh. I got the lamb barbacoa, with rich complex brown sauce and veggies in a hot pot. Hubbie's duck and steak tortillas good but small, he liked duck better. Only problem was overly fast service (apps and mains delivered within 5 minutes). Also our waitress was friendly but disappeared after the entrees to talk lengthily with another couple who appeared to be connected. Bathrooms are accessible through a circuitious dark maze. Coconut flan dessert was sinfully good. We plan to return."

  • "Went with a group of friends to celebrate a friend's birthday. Have to say, the food was outstanding! Can't recall all the dishes we ordered, but every single one was full of flavor and very tasty. Service, however, left a lot to be desired. When the restaurant is nearly empty (it was still early) it shouldn't take 10 min to bring 2 drinks. Especially when one of them is just scotch and not even a cocktail. The drinks must've been sitting on the bar and waiting for our waiter, as half the ice in scotch melted before it even made it to our table. Throughout dinner, waiter showed zero interest in how the table was doing and had a poor attitude. Maybe we just got him on a bad day. Overall, still a great place that I would go back to."

  • "I booked the place and they did not tell me that my table was available only for 1h and 3/4 After 1h 3/4 they asked us to leave without dessert. I complaint to the manager and after arguing and insisting he said that at the beginning of the evening he warned us that we had the table for limited time. I answered that he should have warned me at the moment of the booking NOT once I was there with my guests. After insisting and arguing he let us have dessert. There was huge mess in the room, too many guests anyhow waiting, they over book the place and can not manage it properly: the waiter was kind and in trouble and the food is average... NO way I will return"

  • "Worst dining experience I have ever had! We had clients here from out of town and wanted to take them somewhere great. We have been here a bunch of times and we were in love. We even let the host and manager know that we were with important people. We waited almost an hour for a table, we had no server come to our table for at least 20 minutes and half of the food that was ordered didn't even make it to the table. The food we were served was cold, had no taste and when we specifically asked for nothing to be spicy because a guest was allergic, it was made extra spicy. We will never go again. "

  • "Food is good. Ambience is great. Great spot for birthday dinners, large group events and/or just grabbing a drink at the bar. Great scene, but expect the typical meatpacking vibe/crowd. "

  • "Food was way too spicey for us. Guacamole nearly inedible as well as the salads and two of our entrees. The drinks and atmosphere were great though. Food came out a little too quickly. Didn't even have our drinks yet in hand. "
