Diner Reviews
  • "We ate at Boccone South on Easter. There was a nice crowd enjoying the holiday. As always, the food was wonderful: zucchini blossoms - yum; nice big salad; pan seared mahi mahi and rack of lamb were both delicious; and ended with bananas flambe made at the table by the owner, Silvio. Can't say enough about the service. The staff is attentive but not in an interfering way. Silvio has a great personality and ensures that everyone is having a good experience. FYI - it is a BYOB. Looking forward to returning for Sinatra night on Wednesday, April 30th."

  • "Boccone South is never a disappointment! Silvio and his team are always introducing new dishes. This time they added two more great HOMEMADE deserts! First being Bananas & Strawberry Flambe cooked table side. The second new desert is a Strawberry Zabaglione! My table had to try both and let me tell you they were AMAZING! I highly recommend you try them. I can't wait for our next visit to see other new exciting items Silvio and Carlo will come up with next! BUON LAVORO!"

  • "What a fun evening we had with friends! Sylvio, the owner, greeted us and seated us with great spirit and warmth. The menu offered numerous choices of traditional and contemporary Italian. And the specials made deciding a challenge. Our salads were oh so fresh and seasonal. Our entrees were absolutely delicious. My seafood was the freshest I've eaten in a long time. The waiter was attentive, but not overbearing."

  • "Welcomed instantly entering the restaurant. Friendly feeling. Ordered the chicken stuffed w spinach cheese and prosciutto. Really good. Brick oven pizza. Great. And the gnocchi. Delicious. Great gravy too. Loved the bread! Server Nick was excellent ask for his section you won't be disappointed. Silvio was funny and made sure our experience at Boccone South was very enjoyable. It was! We will be back!!"

  • "The food was fantastic, but the service was a little off. We chalked it up to be short staffed. Our bus boy must have been new because when we asked for vinegar to go with the olive oil (for dipping the bread in) he brought white vinegar. When we said dark vinegar he had to ask the waiter what we meant and then he returned with a vial of balsamic vinegar. We were truly shocked to learn it was a BYOB restaurant -- even being from Kansas (a formerly dry state) we can buy alcohol in a restaurant. We were never offered anything else to drink (soda or sparkling water perhaps?) The soup, salads, gnocchi and pizza were good; the special owner-made dessert delightful. I'm sure on a less busy night service would be better."

  • "Greeted well upon entering the restaurant by Silvio. Nick our waiter was very informative with the specials and all of the items we inquired about on the menu. We ate the veal saltimbocca and chicken sorrentino (which the chef motified for glutton free eater). Meals were delicious. The desserts are to die for. Their ricotta cheesecake was heavenly. The strawberry zabaglione was terrific. Silvio and Nick were very attentive checking on us too. I would highly recommend you try this restaurant."

  • "My partner and I found this gem last year when the ownership changed as was formerly Bottegna. We were made extremely welcome. The service was excellent. The food surpassed our expectations and was plentiful and delicious and the menu extensive with also a wonderful selection of specials. We have been back many times since and will continue to do so...Dr"

  • "Especially notable was the black linguini with seafood special, one of the best seafood dishes I've ever eaten! Hope it becomes a regular menu item Silvio's freshly made zabaglione was an absolute delight for desert and complimented the espresso."

  • "Still one of our local favorites. Great location for dinner before a show at SOPAC. Veal Milanese was great as usual. I had the MahiMahi special which was a little pricey at $30, I wish we had asked the waiter about the price before we ordered. Glad the restaurant is BYO,that helped keep the total price reasonable."

  • "We went to dinner here Saturday night with another couple. The restaurant was packed and quite energetic. Food portion were large and the choices were great. It is BYOB place and every enjoyed their dishes. I got a pistachio crusted grouper on Fava bean risotto. It was delicious perfectly seasoned. I will definitely go back."

  • "Took my fiance here on Valentine's day and had an amazing time. The pasta special was delicious and the bread pudding for dessert was the best I have ever had. I enjoyed how the owner introduced himself to every table to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Can't wait to return."

  • "We've been coming to this restaurant for years through all it's incarnations. Never had a bad meal. The new owner, Sylvio, goes out of his way to make you feel welcome and has kept the integrity of Chef Carlo's cooking style and recipes. A true neighborhood gem!"

  • "My current situation at the time of visiting BOCCONE SOUTH was a sunday service & viewing a property with our Bishop,Firstlady & Pastor we needed a place to eat & to further discuss business, We needed to feed people with very particular palates.. We took a chance in BOCCONE SOUTH, because it was close,we walked in, we were greeted & treated like Royalty, we ate, the food is FREAKING GREAT, the Owner,Silvio, came over multiply times to check on us & he blessed with samples of pizza & gelato on him...we purchased desserts..HOMEMADE BREADPUDDING& TIRAMESU....SPEECHLESS! Oh, Chef Carlos, is amazing as well .. so we actually came back on monday, but they were closed so I made reservations for a March birthday.."

  • "This is my second meal at Boccone South, and both have been fantastic! This time, I had a Clam & Andouille Sausage Appetizer Special, the Cappellini Di Mare (with Shrimp, Clams, Mussels, Scallops, and Calamari) entree from the menu, and an unbelievable Bread Pudding for dessert. Every piece of this meal was fantastic. The Clams in a sauce so good I needed dip bread in it until my entree came! The seafood in my Entree was fresh and again delicious. And the portion was large enough for a full second meal the next day! Finally, the Bread Pudding was out of this world! I don't know what made it different, but it was unlike any other bread pudding I've ever had, richer, creamier, simply amazing! I would recommend Boccone South to anyone!"

  • "We have gone here several times for the past two years. Every time the owners have changed but the menu hasn't. The experience however has gone downhill. The service is usually good but the food is lacking in taste. Also on Valentine's day, the restaurant was freezing!! Many diners were actually wearing their coats during dinner so I know I wasn't the only one cold. Probably not going back again..."

  • "We have been to Boccone South several times and each time has been better than the previous. You can get everything from large individual pizzas to wonderful Italian appetizers and entrees. Our most recent visit had short rib ravioli appetizer of 4 large raviolis. Perfect for a cold winter night. Also had stuffed pork chops - delicious and moist."

  • "Boccone has done an excellent job of carrying on the tradition of Carlo's two prior great incarnations--Cafe Arugula and Bottagra South. We will be going back soon."

  • "We went last Sunday for the third time and it was as fantastic as the first and we shall continue to frequent at least monthly if not more. The menu and wonderful specials are varied and so tasty, the service is attentive but not overbearing and the ambience warm and friendly with light background music although I believe occasional nights have live music which we look forward to. Have booked valentines eve as we know we can rely on all of the above without paying a premium for it being valentines night...plus...there is live entertainment which we look forward to but most of all the delicious food and wonderful homemade gelato...pistachio being my favourite I was happy to find it here...just wonderful. Thank you ."

  • "We were seated at a corner table-very romantic. The service was excellent and the food was very good. I had the Rigatoni and my wife had a pasta and shrimp dish. The food was served pretty quickly. There was no pressure to order appetizers and dessert and the bill was reasonable. It's a byob so that helped. We were very happy."

  • "We recently had a lovely experience at Boccone South while celebrating my birthday with some close friends. The food was delicious and fresh -- perfect for a chilly winter night without being too heavy. Most importantly, Silvio and his team really went the extra mile to ensure my guests and I had an enjoyable birthday celebration -- their extended hospitality was immensely appreciated! Molte grazie for a beautiful evening!"

  • "On New Year's Eve, I ate at Boccone in South Orange. The meal was flat-out excellent! I was thrilled with every aspect, from the enthusiastic and helpful wait staff, to the phenomenal food, to the great atmosphere, to the friendly owner, Silvio! I had Calamari with a Thai Ginger Sauce, then a Tuna over Shrimp Rissoto, and finally a Coppa Espana, which was a frozen gelato dessert. The Calamari was perfectly crispy and the Thai Ginger Sauce was unique and delicious! The Tuna was perfectly medium rare, and the Shrimp Risotto was delicious! In fact, I had a very tiny bit left over, and I brought it home for the next day anyway, because it was so good! And the Coppa Espana was so great, I had a second! Great Experience, Highly Recommend!"

  • "Boccone South made for a wonderful New Year's eve dining experience. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the wait staff and quickly seated. The owner was also very friendly and present throughout the evening. The restaurant offered a great list of specials that included vegetarian, seafood and meat options. The portion for each dish was a nice size and the food was delicious I would certainly recommend this place for anyone interested in a great dining experience. Boccone South was very clean and welcoming. It provided a relaxed but classy dining atmosphere."

  • "Our New Year's Eve dining experience was great. Our party of 4 was seated right away. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. There were plenty of choices for our non meat eating group and we were allowed to substitute foods in the dishes we ordered. We had a pizza as an appetizer which was exceptional. The pasta dishes were excellent and the fish dishes were works of art. The Restaurant is BYOB."

  • "Boccone South has a new owner. He is very personable and aims to please. Our waiter Ruben was very attentive. Everything was served in a timely manner. The calamari appetizer was very good. We also had a small pizza for the table to share and delicious rice balls. The stuffed pork chop was excellent and the fish special with mahi mahi and shell fish was very good over pasta. For dessert they have gelato in a good choice of flavors and mini canoli. We ended our meal with espresso and cappuccino. Will definitely go back. We all really enjoyed our meal and the friendly service."

  • "Dont know why the name keeps changing, but staff in kitchen and on the floor stays the same, and still does very good job of serving a real nice dinner. Some seats are bit crowded together like most NY places, so sometimes privacy not the best, but dining experience is quite good"
