Diner Reviews
  • "I love the outdoor seating with view of boats on JL square. my only criticism is bussers tried to clear plates that still had food on them. But over efficient is better than under when it comes to attentive service. "

  • "My first time to Bocanova—with a group of six. We tried lots of dishes, and all were pretty good (especially the cauliflower and quinoa salad). But service was a little shoddy: we repeatedly asked for bread (which we were assured was coming, but never came), and my boyfriend's salad (as part of his main meal) never showed up either–despite a few reminders. And the waiter didn't do much to remedy the situation except assure us we wouldn't be charged. Kind of disappointing. Still, I'm hoping it was an off (Saturday) nite as I liked the energy of this place and would go back."

  • "...with an Excellent Rating! I have had the pleasure of dining at BN a few times now and each time the experience seems to get better. I highly recommend sharing as many appetizers as possible (they are all excellent) and get one or two other big dishes to share. Do not skip dessert.... the bread pudding is out of the his world! Enjoy! "

  • "Hi. I'll definitely return for lunch, but only for lunch. Bocanova not the best for dinner. Food a little too too 'foodie.' Plates meant to share really are not that shareable. Would appreciate more mainstream items. Quinoa salad VERY GOOD. Grilled octopus bland. Apple/Treviso salad meh. Veggie pot pie the big hit with our table. Our waiter was great. Friendly, but not too. Knowledgeable and engaging. A Keeper. Please hire an accoustic engineer to consult on lower noise level. We're not old, but still had to shout across a four-top."

  • "We love Bocanova! We come up once a year for the boat show and always make sure we have reservations. We took some friends this time and they loved it too. The menu is always amazing and the food is wonderful! The staff is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and the service has always been excellent. We will be back again next year. :)"

  • "Had brunch here last weekend. We ordered the chicken tinga, the hurache of the day, mushroom cerviche, quinoa salad and cheese plate. One of our party had the special beginets (sp?) of the day. The run down: Most of the food was good, particularly the tinga. The quinoa salad was unexpectedly gritty, like sand had gotten in it! Very jarring. The cheese plate didn't have any crackers or bread, which would've been nice. The dessert was generous, and while I didn't have any, it looked and smelled great."

  • "I have been to BN five times now and Everytime I am thrilled with the food but the service is always terrible. The wait staff is always pleasant but we get neglected. This latest visit we sat for 40 mins waiting for drinks before we asked a waiter in training to help us out. He got things rolling and totally saved the day! The food as usual was amazing deviled eggs, lobster ceviche, seared tuna all amazingly delicious no complaints on the food I just wish the could get the service sorted out. I would not reccomend this restaurant for business meeting or special night.great if you are not too starving and have sometime and patience on your hands. Chocolate croissant bread pudding out of this world!!!"

  • "We went to Bocanova for dinner for my birthday and it was a great experience. We originally reserved a table outside, but when we got there, it was so windy and cold. The manager noticed and came out to offer us a table inside even though it was very busy and we had a large party. His accommodating attitude made a great dinner even better. The food and drinks were amazing, so we all had a wonderful time and plan on coming back. Hopefully the weather will be better next time so we can enjoy the view."

  • "I would have to say the experience was good and i would've said great if it had not been the large party crowd the restaurant had that night. I was told it was a reception but the noise level was so loud, I was relieved to be seated in a separate room of the restaurant. Nonetheless, it would have been better if the crowd was more "contained". People spilled into the walkway where patrons have to clamor through to get to the bathroon and wait staff to go through with food and drinks. The aisle is not very wide so I found myself having to say "excuse me" alot just to get past. I found it detracting from the experience but it helped to be dining in a separate room with an attentive waitstaff. The food and service was a saving grace."

  • "Love the new spring additions to the menu. Great fun to try several dishes to share with your table. Loved the roasted beets with goat cheese, green garlic and hazelnuts. And the day boat scallops in curry were delicious. Great atmosphere and service."

  • "First visit to Bocanova (site of the Old Spaghetti Factory); had lunch on the outdoor patio overlooking marina on a beautiful sunny day. Crab deviled eggs were divine and they obligingly modified the fried oyster po' boy sandwich into a salad for me; delicious. Refreshing raspberry lemonade. Only downside is that it was kind of pricey, but not over the top. Will definitely look for a reason to go back!"

  • "Never been here and decided based on other Open Table reviews. We weren't disappointed! Service was a tiny bit slow but otherwise, the dinner was magnificent. Shared the dungeness deviled eggs, cheese plate, jicima, beets, pork shank and pork ribs. The only miss in the bunch was the mushroom escabeche - cider vinegar didn't work. Sat outside on a gorgeous evening. Cocktails were yummy and a nice wine list. Definitely will come back!"

  • "Even though we had a reservation, they took 45 minutes to seat us even though there was a whole empty section of the restaurant they weren't using. The service was so slow that it was another 45 minutes before we were even able to eat. The food was good, but I wouldn't say it was mind blowing and the portions are really really small. Tapas style dishes each for the price of a full entree at most restaurants (about $15-20). We ordered about 2 dishes per person and I think everyone left hungry."

  • "Sat outside on a beautiful warm evening at 8PM . Our waiter lost interest in us after we had our first shared course of serviche A runner brought out our next dishes and warned us of hot plates, however the chili relleno was FAR from hot. The Cheese on top had turned hard and plastic like and had the appearance of a dish that was not freshly prepared- very Disappointing. The grilled octopus was good. Waited forever for our waiter to return and then when he did, he said He bring us a dessert menu. After waiting another 10 minutes, he returned and by that time, we decided to pass on dessert and asked for the check. That took another 10 minutes"

  • "The bartenders are friendly and always willing to share their knowledge about the drinks. We were seated on time and promptly offered water and the opportunity to make further drink requests. Our waitress was very helpful and friendly. As the restaurant is tapas style, we started out with some small plates to share. We really love the Boca Nova experience and recommend it highly!"

  • "My husband, daughter and I had a wonderful time here. Great food -- creative menu, wonderful flavor combinations. The chef is quite creative; the place is lively and fun. Fantastic inventive cocktails. We all agreed the vegetarian pot pie was amazing ... The beet salad was to die for ... And my ahi tuna entree was incredible. Absolutely get the bread pudding for dessert. The only down side was the parking. We went on a Friday night and had to do the valet for $10 a bit pricey"

  • "This was our first time at Bocanova. I bought the Groupon after reading another review on Open Table. Our server was excellent. He made sure that we spent every dime from the voucher. We were able to have what ever we wanted up to the voucher value. Great deal but more importantly, we'd come back. The food was really good- scallops were cooked perfectly. Loved the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. The manager on duty was very attentive, professional and very accommodating. The only thing- the tables are set up King Style so you may end up sitting with another group or couple. Different, but we got used to it quickly as the yummy drinks were flowing. Worth a try if you are looking for another really good dinner spot in Oak Town."

  • "I am a vegetarian and found MANY choices of dishes to try, pickled mushrooms, quinoa/kale salad, roasted beets, fried peppers, guacamole, and deviled eggs were all delicious! My friend had a nice wine from Argentina and I had a margarita. The music made us want to dance salsa, but we opted to dance Argentine Tango after because we were so full and needed to work off some calories! The hostess was able to make changes in our table, and time due to traffic. The only thing that could have improved is that we had to ask for refills in ice tea three times."

  • "We're regulars at Bocanova because we have NEVER been disappointed in a meal...until this trip. Our drinks took 25 minutes to arrive (5 minutes apart), and dinner nearly 45 and in an odd order. Service picked up briefly, then disappeared when we were first trying to get the check and then pay it. My usual Cesar cocktail was warmish and in a coupe glass the first time with little to no jalapeño flavor, then the second chilled and perfect in a martini. New bar shift? New kitchen staff? I know there was some larger service issue, since servers seemed to be apologizing to multiple, clearly irritated parties. We spent a lot of money between the check and a sitter, and left feeling very disappointed in what WAS our favorite date restaurant."

  • "We have been to Bocanova three times and intend to go again because there still are things on the menu that we want to try. The menu is packed with delicious and unusual items meant for sharing. The food and wine service was expert. Good recommendations from the wine list to pair with food and excellent advice on amount and pacing of the dishes ordered."

  • "I had been wanting to eat here for a while and getting a Groupon for it sealed the deal. We went to celebrate my bday and our daughter's visit from college and we're not disappointed. It took us a bit of time to examine the menu, get questions answered and make our final decisions but our waitress was patient and helpful throughout. We chose seafood and veggies since it was lent and enjoyed the symphony of flavors. Each item was full of flavor and they all complemented the others, from the smoked fish crostini to the quinoa salad, asparagus with chimichurri sauce, octopus and swordfish. The Spanish sparkling wine was delicious as was the bread pudding for dessert! Can't wait to try some meat dishes...."

  • "The service at bocanova was amazing! Granted I went there when it was dead on a rainy afternoon. However, the entire staff was on point; our server, the manager, bussand food runners. Our server was very knowledgable and I loved that the manager took the to continuously refill our water and even took our drink order because our server was busy. At the time he was the only server on the floor. Nonetheless, I would gladly retern for the well prepared Latin American inspired dishes and excellent staff."

  • "Rachel was our server and she was excellent. She kept checking back with us and made the dining experience very pleasant. I loved the Fried Chicken sandwich and Rachel selected the wine and it was delicious. We also had the chocolate bread pudding which was recommended and it met all our expectations. Loved the cold chocolate ice cream with the hot bread pudding."

  • "We always bring out of town guests here and the folks at Boca Nova never fail to please! We asked Gerardo to "just bring us food" and our Canadian guests were blown away by every dish. "It was the best meal I can remember having" said our guests and we have to agree!"

  • "Second time I've been there. Food was okay, but generally underwhelming for the price. Food is served family style and portions would be enough for two (two dishes shared with two people). I had a large group so we had the opportunity to shar several dishes. Ribs, flat iron steak, and scallops were okay, as we're the gratin. Upside, the cauliflower and the crime brulle and fried milk deserts were good.. Ambiance was lively and service was good."

  • "I am hesitant about returning to Bocanova after the disappointing evening I had. I made my reservation and even called to confirm it the day of, however I was stuck waiting for a table for 45 minutes. My date and I settled on a table in the bar area that was extremely noisy. My food needed to be sent back and reheated but tasted good. The manager redeemed my Groupon certificate in the most embarrassing way. I can't believe I paid so much to be treated to bad."

  • "Came for a birthday dinner. There were five of us and we ate family style. Standout dishes were the lobster and shrimp ceviche appetizer, the half-chicken with mole, the beef with black beans, Brussels sprouts with bacon and the Butternut Squash. The Winter Greens au gratin was not a favorite. And the flat iron steak was also delicious and perfectly cooked."

  • "We were seated 45 minutes after our reservation time. The food was not quite up to the quality of earlier visits. Finally, and this may sound trite, but the bar had no limes for cocktails. Maybe an off night as we have enjoyed past visits."
