Diner Reviews
  • "I absolutely love the filet and lamp chops here at Bobby Van's Grill. Always very succulent and the right temperature. The service is also impeccable. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself here to Bobby Van's."

  • "Food is mediocre--had scallops wrapped in bacon, and the scallops had a sinewy and not soft & smooth texture; tenderloin was solid, albeit overcooked for medium-rare; and the California roll could use more avocado to add flavor. Service is decent; entree came out while I was still working on my appetizer. Cannot beat the Friday/Saturday half-priced wines, which such features as Lafite & Mouton, as well as 1/2 bottles of Quintessa '07 for $65."

  • "Took my love for a 30th birthday celebration with some friends, and the food/service was excellent. Cant wait to dine there again!"

  • "Our steaks were perfectly cooked. While their a la carte menu is pricey, they were having a weekly fixed price special, that was a good value. They decor needs a refresh/modernization. It's a bit like dining in an 80's bank."

  • "Bobby Vans has the greatest food. I am never disappointed when I go to eat dinner."

  • "Food was just ok. I'm a filet mignon lover, but this was not worth the price (even with the $50 LivingSocial discount I had). I've never had to wrestle with a medium-rare filet mignon that was badly charred; perhaps this is what they mean by "Grill" in the name. Service was really good, but not great. I'd give them another go, but I don't think I can drag my wife back..."

  • "One of the wait staff knocked over my water glass all over me. Barely offered an apology and didn't offer anything to help me clean up."

  • "Some of the best prime rib I have ever eaten. And the martinis were pretty darn good as well! This is a great downtown restaurant."

  • "I had been to Bobby Van's grill in NY by Rockefeller Center a number of times and my companions and I always enjoyed ourselves. This trip to the DC New York Ave location was equally fantastic. Our server was very friendly and checked on us just the right amount of times; too many can be annoying and too few can make you feel unattended to. My boyfriend and I came on a Saturday evening and the noise level was a bit higher than I had anticipated and usually like. But the meal more than made up for it. We will definitely be coming back soon!"

  • "The place has exceeded my expectations! The food and the wait staff were awesome. You are treated like you are the only person in the restaurant. Again, awesome place, good and service."

  • "Bobby Van's is our place of choice when we want to treat ourselves to a great steak. The meat isn't the only story, though. The sides are fantastic as well. This restaurant was a little loud initially due to the large crowd (our reservation was 8:30) but by the end of he night is was quiet. We'll be moving from the area this summer and this is one place we will miss at our new home."

  • "My husband and I went there last Friday night because we got a living social deal to save $30 from our meal. It was the first time we visit the restaurant and we had a very pleasant experience there. The serve was great and the steak was top notch. My husband ordered the veal and I ordered the beef shoulder grill. We ordered one side dish and the portion is big!! Their steaks are well-seasoned, tender and had great flavor!! I think they have better steak than capital grill, Morton and Prime rib!!"

  • "This restaurant has excellent food, especially steaks, but what we like best is the extremely friendly and efficient service. Every time we have dined here, our waiters have always been very personable and have gone above and beyond to make sure we are happy with our meal. Dining on Friday or Saturday night is very reasonable when they offer the $40.00 fixed price menus."

  • "I went to Bobby Van's (using a Groupon). When we sat down, our server came and asked us for a drink and that was the last we saw of him for at least 15 minutes. Eventually another waiter came and took our order. I'm not sure if the food was that good or whether I was so hungry from waiting. I don't think I would go here again."

  • "Had a wonderful meal here with wonderful service. However, my party of 6 ended up in a room with a party of 18 and a party of 20, so we literally could not converse without yelling across the table. Kind of put a damper on the evening ..."

  • "Had a blind date, and this was the choice - it didn't disappoint, with only one minor exception - there was a big VIP party just getting started (think it was Speaker Boehner) as we arrived (on time for our reservation) and they just couldn't handle us right then. We ended up waiting about 30 min in the bar, no one came to get us, but when we wandered back to the hostess stand, we were then seated promptly. From then on, it was fantastic!!! Super food, great wine list, great service, and a nice place to get to know someone new while making a good first impression."

  • "First time sending review. Lunch special was terrible. Fish had no taste. Almost like they needed to get rid of it and decided to make it the daily special. The salad was also wilted and brown and coffee was cold! My guest did like the pretzel sticks. I was hosting lunch so did not want to make a big deal in front of my guest but I don't think I would go back to this restaurant."

  • "I am extremely disappointed with the service at Bobby Van's. We made reservation for 6:00pm on Saturday, the restaurant was not busy. The hostess placed us in a table near a family of four and a male server quickly came and took our order. Little by little, other guests sat next to us. At that moment, my date and I notice the tables surround us were taken care of by a lady so we were under the assumption that the person that took our order was not our server. We asked the lady server for bread, she agrees but didn't bring us any bread. The food came quickly but was on the salty side. No one checked on us during our meal. After we finish our entrée, no one stopped by to see if we wanted desserts. We pay out front and still gave 15% tip."

  • "We go here quite a bit, and we tend to always order the same thing each time. Went a bit braver and ventured away from the usual steaks - went with Shrimp Diablo and Fried Chicken. We didn't regret either choice as they were both fantastic."

  • "Food was either cold or warm and it tasted okay. Our waiter was knowledgeable and warm and did a good job."

  • "The service was beyond compare. I walked in and they took my coat, showed me to a table, and never let my water glass go empty. The servers are lined up in the back of the nicely lit room, so all you need to do is close your menu and they will come to you! They have two tablecloths on each table! The food was phenomenal; I now know why people call steak "juicy". Their New York strip was hot, tender, and very juicy. It was prepared beautifully, and I asked to split it between me and my boyfriend. They were very accommodating, and brought it out on two separate plates with sides of greens and some crunchy thing. We also had the baked potato for two - it is THE BIGGEST potato I have ever witnessed. Above all, try the vanilla creme brûlée!!!"

  • "The restaurant also excels in seafood, with a number of first rate appetizers and entrees."

  • "We ate at Bobby Van's early on a Thursday night. The service was awesome - I was allowed to trade sides on my main course, which was great, and they brought me the biggest baked potato I have ever seen, which made me incredibly happy! - the little things! Our waiter was also super-attentive. The food was delicious - I had fish and he had a steak, and we shared the chocolate cake for dessert. The only reason I docked 1 star for ambience is because, maybe due to the time of day or time of year, I'm not sure, the place was nearly empty. A full restaurant is typically a great restaurant!...but this one was great despite the lull!"

  • "The food was excellent! I ordered the Rib Eye and my husband had the New York Strip they both were cooked to perfection! We also took advantage of the ½ price bottle of wine with dinner, they had a great selection. No special occasion just date night with my hubby!"

  • "I came into this dinner with no expectations, which makes this restaurant even more disappointing. The service started off very poorly, waiter literally dropped the menus on the table without a word, then proceeded to disappear for 15 minutes. At the same time some waiters appeared to be giving at tentative service, explaining the menu, filling water glasses, etcetera. Our waiter arrived asked what we would like with no explanation, then remembered he didn't take our drink order, not good service. If the food was good, I could have overlooked the service, but it was not. The food, my dates filet was done to order, but was tasteless, my New York strip was medium well, ordered medium rare, tough not good, I will not be back"

  • "I had heard of Bobby Vans in NY and was eager to try. I ordered the Cajun ribeye as recommended by the server as their signature steak. I've tried most of the major chop houses and all of the ones in DC. This ribeye would rank below average in my experience. It was cooked to my liking but tough. My wife had the Sea Bass and was happy with her choice. We had the Tuna appetizer and it was fine but not exceptional. Service was good and punctual. All in all, it was a good restaurant but not nearly as good as it's peers. My wife thought the menu looked as if "they've been living on their reputation for a long time and haven't changed a thing". I gave it three stars because it clearly has potential."

  • "I guess my expectations were too high. I've been to the bar at Bobby Vans many times. I've enjoyed the good service from Damion and the bar tenders and the foods on the bar menue. Enjoyed a really good porte they had the other day. Dinning was not the same. The service was par at best. We wanted a good bold wine by the glass. They had a couple but not what my wife wanted and pressured us to buy a bottle. The NY strip steak was pretty good but disapointed with my creole steak. Also disapointed with the fried artichoke salad. I also was disappointed with the bill. I would have expected more from a meal with that price $$$$."

  • "The waiter was awesome! The Food was outstanding! I love this place and I love it better than Bobby Van's Steakhouse down the street. Bobby Van's Grill is the Best Steakhouse in DC!!!"

  • "The food here is very good, it's also very expensive and the service is very slow. Both times we've been here our entrees have taken a VERY long time, with no explanation from the the wait staff. We will likely go again, but we now know that the food will take a while."

  • "Our first time dining here. Great service, very attentive. Food was good and generous portions. We had seafood -- tuna and trout and both were prepared well. Good wedge salad. The option to get a bottle of wine at half price was a wonderful treat!"

  • "I walked in and said I had a reservation and some waiter swooped in and took us to his section without the host even able to check us in. I had a special request on the reservation to and this didn't give him time to even look at it. The food was very mediocre. The onion rings are onion straws, but battered rings. The "crispy" brussels sprouts were soaked in balsamic vinegar and was not crispy. My fried chicken was soaked in gravy and was a soggy mess. The "apple tart" was just apples inside of filo-dough and was not a tart by any means. It was a burnt crispy mess. A tart is more pie like. All in all the menu items were not as described. I wasted money on food I thought I was buying but when it came out it was something different."

  • "Though the owner is a extremely military friendly, offering a military discount without having to be in uniform would be key. Other than, the food was great and the bread pudding is a keeper and must have again upon return. As far as the name you'd think it was some hip BBQ joint but this upscale location is very nice and just right for either a romantic date or n evening business meeting."

  • "Easy reservation on Open Table. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated. As drink orders were taken, we were informed of specials. My wife opted for veal parmigiana special and I ordered the small NY Strip. We both ordered Caesar Salads with anchovies. When the salads arrived, we were astonished. They were beautiful, but large enough to be shared. Bread was warm, entees were cooked to appropriate temperature. Also go order of mushrooms. Very good and not floating in bowl of butter like many places. Large enough portion for at least 3. s full, we had no room for dessert. Our water glasses never ran empty and our server checked back with us on multiple occasions. Overall, a fantastic and relaxing Monday night dinner. Portions are very large."

  • "Worst service ever for a restaurant not that full Steak mediocre at best. Asked for Bernaise to jazz up steak. Never got it. I would look at BLT steakhouse. There is a reason it's hard to get in there and not hard to get in to Bobby Vans"

  • "I love Bobby Van's, always enjoy it, this last time no exception. I will say I wish the service could have been just a bit more brisk, as I had told the waiter in advance that we only had one hour, since my friend had to catch a train, but still we waited quite a while between the appetizer and the steaks, so that we ended up without time for dessert and coffee."
