Diner Reviews
  • "One other couple as well as my husband and I dined here on April 12. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere and the service was wonderful. We all thought that the food was decent but not memorable. We had the prime rib, strip steak, tilapia and the scallops collectively. I also had the clam chowder while another in our party had the oysters as starters. I would go back for the attentive service and atmosphere, but not the food. All in all, it was a good experience."

  • "We dined outside and had a great view of the bay. Service was exceptional. My scallops were perfect. Definitely a place we will return to when visiting San Diego."

  • "We had a solid experience at the Boathouse. We ate our last meal of our vacation here and really enjoyed the moment. Everyone was very nice, our table was ready 15 minutes early. We sat by the window over looking the bay, windows were open, breeze and view were awesome. Ate the Alaskan Crab and Filet, both were cooked well and tasted great. This is a nice option off Orange Ave and had a romantic feel."

  • "We arrived at 6:30 for our reservation and we were asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. Being a little cautious of being cold, I chose inside, but the woman seating us said she had a really nice table outside and that we wouldn't be cold. So we sat outside. And we were definitely chilly. Our food was mostly great, although my husband's prime rib showed up luke warm/cold, which he wasn't too impressed with. The view was lovely, the food and service were pretty good. But I hated being cold at dinner."

  • "We enjoyed a great evening at Boathouse 1887!! We had a wonderful table by the window looking over the bay. Our waiter was so friendly and attentive. GREAT service! Our kids loved it as well (good kids menu). The halibut and salmon were both delicious. And the key lime pie and creme brulee were the perfect ending. Excellent meal and great evening out."

  • "This location is great. Just a quick walk down from the Del or just as easy to park the car. I thought that the menu was limited in scope. In fact, I turned the page, hoping to find more and was disappointed in the small selection. I did find a great steak and had some wonderful chowder but had hoped for more interesting options."

  • "The ambiance was casual and very cozy. The steak was prepared to perfection. The bread fresh out of the oven delicious. My friend and I mentioned to our server that we would be splitting the salad. He took the time of splitting it for us. The customer service was par none! Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "It is hard to rate any of the wonderful food spots in the San Diego area. 1887 was wonderful, but not crowded because of the off season. I never rate anything top rated because there is always something more to be done. Even when it does not seem so. The place was not disappointing in ambiance, also it was very clean and our server was very attentive. The elegant feel was captured in a dressy to casual atmosphere not unlike a yacht club or private club. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it ."

  • "My son and his girl friend were in town for the weekend and we wanted to try something new. We made a great choice! The food was spectacular. My wife's Halibut was cooked to perfection as was my New York Strip. A very nice wine selection as well. It was a perfect evening! We will definitely be back."

  • "It was close to the hotel and on the water so we figured we would give it a try.. Seafood = yes; local seafood no. The server suggested coconut shrimp for our app. When delivered, it was nothing better than the frozen stuff you can pick up at the grocery store. Based on this I ordered the filet - Medium. It was delivered Well Done. The clam chowder i ordered instead of a salad was excellent."

  • "I took my wife here for Valentine's Day this year. We were early for our reservation but seated right away on the outdoor patio. It was well heated with a nice view over the water. We both had the prime rib, which was cooked perfectly and an excellent cut. Overall a great dining experience, I would definitely recommend."

  • "We were somewhat disappointed with our evening out. The reservation was arranged with a request for window seating but we were seated without any view. Due to our poor seating, our waiter did not notice us for some time. We were actually considering leaving when the waiter arrived but did decide to order. Our meal and service was good but our mood was not."

  • "Having loved this location and restaurant for the many years it was a Chart House---, well I guess memories will need to suffice. the atmosphere, food, and service are all a notch or two lower than I had previously enjoyed (admittedly some time ago)."

  • "My wife and I had a great dinner and enjoyed ourselves! A little bit more pricey than I thought it would be, 90 for the 2 of us. I had 2 beers wife had a mixed drink."

  • "Nice romantic location for a special occasion. Went early in order to watch the light change as the sun set (no view of the sunset, it's a marina view not an ocean view). Salad and steak were tasty, couscous side too. Service was very pleasant. Drinks could have been a little better (not the greatest martini I've ever had). Pretty solid "special occasion romantic" place."

  • "Nice place for a special occasion, prices are a little high for me but excellent service and good food. Would definitely go back, but only for a special occasion."

  • "We had a prime table at the end of their long boathouse porch. It was right on the marina with boats, boaters, duck and a large Blue Herron that perched at the stern of a docked boat while we had tasty oysters. Our waiter was knowledgable and a fun, laid back professional. I had their signature dish, the halibut, which is topped with a macadamia but crust. My girlfriend had the prime rib. Everything including the martinis were perfect. Such a prime spot on Coronado."

  • "I've been coming to this restaurant for a number of years and enjoy the combination of ambiance, good menu and location. When ownership changed to the Boathouse, so did the menu, which was a bit disappointing. It seems chefs are more interested in imprinting their signature than being concerned about their regular customers. I've learned (not surprisingly) that other customers have voiced similar complaints about the little things that could be easily accommodated. Great restaurants go out of their way to do so, but not this one. Is asking for a side of baked potato or a non-sourdough bread too much to ask? Apparently so. It won't take long before I stop being a regular customer if more changes are made."

  • "We decided to try out the restaurant for SDRW. When we arrived we had a 7:15 reservation and were very delighted to be seated right away even though we showed up 20 minutes early. When I made my reservations online I had requested a table by the window (in which we did not get) but we were in the room overlooking the bay front. However, they had seated everyone in that room and it was very crowded and loud! It took about 10 minutes for our waiter to take our drink order. He finally brought us our drinks and told us that he was going to "explain" the SDRW menu and had some other items to suggest but never did. Finally we ordered about 30 minutes after our arrival, and were not happy about the wait. With that said, the food was wonderful."

  • "But i was still happy we went here. Boathouse 1887 was less upscale than I expected but the restaurant had a good menu and service. I went here with my boyfriend for restaurant week. I felt like I was on a boat so that was fun. I ordered the prime rib and my boyfriend had the halibut. The prime rib was cooked perfectly. Dessert was delicious too- sorbet and chocolate lava cake. It was not too crowded which was nice. I wish there was a better view of the water though but there's not much they can do about that considering it was built in 1887. I would recommend this place to others looking for a nice dinner."

  • "My girlfriend and I enjoyed our meal along with all the historical photos displayed throughout the restaurant. Only one negative - we noticed EVERY single table but ours was given bread before and/or during their meal but NOT ours. While we appreciate the waiter keeping the extra carbs off of our table we would have greatly appreciated being given the opportunity to make the choice ourselves. Other than that the service was fine."

  • "Let's start with the starters, the high light of the evening. Coconut Shrimp excellent, Poke, not the best, the Oyster shooters( $8) excellent but extra. Wine was also extra 1/2 btl of Clos de Val ($35). On to the main course, the Prime Rib was the worst we have ever had, tough, my wife sent hers back, not much better. Mine was also a fight but better with the second (sharper) knife they brought with my wife's second plate. Yes, they guarantee what they sell but who wants to wait for a different meal, Ah, to finish the Cappacino was excellent ($6) and the Lava Cake non descriptive. You might be able to get the drift here, Food furnished under the Restaurant Week banner was not so good, paid extras were ok. We called it an adventure."

  • "The menu was recently changed, it seems the kitchen is still trying to get a handle on it . Service is great, the owner is almost always there and he is very attenative. View of Glorita Bay is lovely"

  • "The Boathouse or now 1887 on the Bay continues to be just average, and for the price I would say below average. I was hoping that things had been shaken up a bit since the name change, but no. We had the prime rib which was good, but the salad, vegetables etc were underwhelming. I would also like to see more variety on the menu. Tthe decor is a bit dated and could definitely use a refresh. Drinks were good and reasonably priced."

  • "Our 1st choice for New Year's Eve dinner! Always our favorite restaurant for outstanding food, service, ambiance, location and historical significance. Love the name change, which distinguishes this fine dining spot from the Boathouse chain. Our great evening was made even more pleasurable by our skilled, professional and friendly waiter, Dave, who made excellent suggestions for just about everything. Easily made reservations online. Dinner was served promptly with no errors. Price was reasonable for a special night out. We come here all year long, whether casual or more formal dinners. Love this place!"

  • "We were pleased to find that the restaurant could take a reservation for a group of 12 on New Year's Eve and that when we arrived we were seated right away. It was nice to be able to choose from the full menu. Everyone in the group was happy with their selection. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and we didn't feel rushed."
