Diner Reviews
  • "We go to bluestem about 1-2 times per year and it never disappoints. The 10 course meal with wine pairings is the only way to go. The myriad of flavors with just the right portions is perfect for a romantic evenings. It is expensive but presentation and quality is the best in kansas city. This is a foodies delight. Those wanting cheap and large portions will be better served with one of kansas city's steakhouses."

  • "The chef prepared a lovely lacto-ovo vegetarian tasting menu for me. My waitress was very good at specifying what I could and could not eat. My food looked tastier than my meat-eating husband's plates! And by overhearing the other tables (it's hard not to!), staff was very good at explaining the menu to customers. However, would definitely suggest booking an early dinner. The noise levels became a bit unbearable as the room filled up. My only complaint is that our primary waitress did seem a bit miffed when we did not order any alcoholic drinks or the wine pairing with dinner. As recovering alcoholics, my husband and I stuck to water and diet coke. Service was also a bit confusing with multiple people acting as service staff at once."

  • "My girlfriend and I recently ate at bluestem after reading wonderful reviews online. The reviews were spot on; this place is incredible. While it is expensive, the cost is entirely worth the wonderful food and service we experienced. The wine pairings were fantastic, and the menu was great. Add in a few surprise tastes along the way, and it sure was an incredible evening."

  • "Very nice place however, very expensive. The location is in a very odd place. The average cost of dinner for 2 would be $250 and above!!!! I wouldn't go back just to have a dinner date nite with my husband. It would need to be a special occasion. You need to have an open mind when dining here as well."

  • "We had never heard of Bluestem....sad to say we live up North and don't travel down to Westport very often. We came across the USA today publication of the top 10 places to eat in KC. We had a special day coming up so we booked reservations. Needless to say we we're ease we did. Great food and experience."

  • "Bluestem did an awesome job. Continues to be one of the best venues in the Kansas City region. Great tasty food and outstanding service. Enjoy!"

  • "Blemstem is very much on my list of go-to places when I visit Kansas City. Just have a look at their website, scan a sample menu, and you'll understand why. On this last visit,I was facing the open kitchen in the recently renovated dining room and was most impressed with the care and precision on view by the chef and his crew. This is a first-rate restaurant."

  • "Bluestem rightly deserves it's recognition from the James Beard Foundation. The service is prompt but not intrusive. The prix fixe tasting menu offers a good price range. The food was prepared well and beautifully presented - however a couple of the items for me were slightly over salted for my liking. The wine pairings were likewise excellent especially for my 1st,4th and 5th course"

  • "This has always been our favourite / regular / goto restaurant for a great meal, service and ambience - the Best in KC in my opinion. Since the restaurant make over, the place is trying to be a scene, and seemingly the focus is now on the venue rather than the food. The food was very disappointing compared to all our previous meals there, the service was not up to standard, the usual attentive but not intrusive service no longer. Our server didn't offer bread, when it arrived after we asked for it, it was cold and bland. I had a pork dish that was so tough it was hard to cut into with a steak knife. My wife's ravioli starter that had no mention of Rabbit on the menu, when it arrived, half of it was Rabbit meat! won't be returning again."

  • "I had heard from multiple people that this was one of the best restaurants in Kansas City. Make no mistake, it is very good, however, for the price, I would probably go elsehwere. Next time I will likely spend my time and money on the bar side."

  • "The title of my review says it all! This place is pure perfection. I recommend the 5 course meal with wine pairing, the wines selected by the sommelier. He comes out to describe each pairing. The food was unique, quirky and delicious. I am still dreaming about the gazpacho. This place isn't cheap, but I don't regret one dime that I spent."

  • "Food and service was outstanding! A New York dining experience in Kansas City without the New York price tag!"

  • "My wife and I made reservations here for brunch expecting a great experience but it was even better than expected. Not only was the brunch amazing, they do have a James Beard chef, but the prices were very reasonable. The ambiance was perfect, the restaurant was busy but quite and the service was outstanding. A truly great dining experience"

  • "My wife and I were unable to secure dinner reservations this past weekend but were able to get a spot for Sunday brunch. I ordered biscuits and gravy ( sausage gravy was delicious but the biscuits were over cooked and hard ) and my wife had the steak special ( meat was tasty but the potatoes were cold). The waiter never checked asto our satisfaction with our food. Based on this experience I would certainly not recommend this restaurant."

  • "We had never heard of blustem before. I posted on facebook that my wife and I were looking for a place to eat for our 20th anniversary. About a fifth of the many posts suggested bluestem. I looked up the menu and thought it looked expensive and a little artsy. It was that indeed. But no doubt about it, bluestem is one of the best places I have ever eaten. This includes trips to other cities like NYC. Bluestem is a great restaurant. The food and service were top notch. The wine pairs were very expensive, but it was totally worth the price. I wish I could eat their more often. Definitely worth it!"

  • "I went in with high expectations for Bluestem, and I am generally disappointed when I think a restaurant will be great. They did not disappoint. Their staff and pastry chef were very kind with my questions as well."

  • "Outstanding as usual. The food was excellent as was the service, although I would like to have seen a little more color in the uniforms."

  • "We each had the 3-course menu. Each was perfectly prepared and presented, especially the deconstructed desserts. Service was very attentive, but not overbearing. The new dining room is a dramatic upgrade, and it's amazing the new open kitchen doesn't make a racket given our proximity to it. The bar is very high for best in KC."

  • "I have a quick comment. When our reservations were confirmed--they asked for dietary restrictions just so the waiter would know. I mentioned that 2 of the 4 in our party do not eat red meat. Our waiter never mentioned it, but we were shocked when the shrimp and grits arrived with sausage or pork included in the hot sauce which ruined it for my daughter. I think the menu details neglected to share that important feature."

  • "Dining at Bluestem is a treat for the senses. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary there and had a memorable evening. The food was presented in a dramatic way and the focus was on giving you a taste experience. The wait staff was friendly and efficient without being overbearing. New flavor sensations were offered and we found them all delicious. It was the right place for us to celebrate such an important occasion."

  • "I was very unsure about going to someplace so fancy. Looking at the portion pictures online I was sure I wouldn't like it and would leave hungry having spent a lot of money. That is so far from what I experienced. The food was incredibly delicious and the service is unbeatable. They even folded my napkin while I was in the restroom. We had the 5 course meal with wine parings and the waiter told us the history of each wine as we received it. My wife and I each ordered somethig different so we tried everything on the menu. We didn't find anything we didn't like. They brought out a special champagne for our anniversary at the end. It is expensive and a little loud if crowd. It will be reserved for special occasions but we will return someday."

  • "The attention to detail was very good and the work skillful. Unlike many supposedly high end places, the configuration of dishes as sensible and the use of micro=greens well done. Overall, an excellent meal"

  • "It was our first time back since the entire interior had been remodeled and the food, service, and surroundings were all outstanding. We were seated near the new open kitchen and were able to watch as the meals were prepared and offer our appreciation directly to the chef. The open kitchen was enjoyable and not distracting (think Hell's Kitchen without the screaming, banging, and profanity). Food was outstanding. I particularly recommend the tortellini with braised rabbit - my wife and I agreed that was the highlight of our meal."

  • "5 courses and everyone an absolute winner. Actually 10, considering there were two of us with different choices. From a delicate spring pea soup to an olive oil poached halibut, the flavors remain clean and fresh. Even a simple asparagus rises to new glory at the hands of this chef. Don't be fooled by the unassuming facade. A celestial food heaven awaits you."

  • "Having had brunch here before and having been favorably impressed, I thought it would be nice to celebrate my children's anniversary here (they, too, had had brunch here previously) The server was pleasant enough but I dont think very efficient as some of the food was cold and we had to remind him to bring some of the extras we had ordered. Also I had been called a couple of days before to remind me of my reservation, and was asked if there was a special occasion. I replied that we were celebrating an anniversary. On the day of the brunch, no mention or gesture for the anniversary was made. So why did they even ask? Perhaps after the reconfiguring, things will be better."

  • "Outstanding dining experience. Limited menu. Three and five course. Smaller portions with five course. Excellent preparation for every portion. Sommelier very young and did not appear to be experienced enough for position. Knew what he was serving that was paired with courses, but no depth beyond those particular wines. A venue for special occasions. Difficult to obtain reservations on weekends. Need to plan ahead well in advance."

  • "When I made reservations at Bluestem for my husband's 30th birthday, I had no idea that our experience would be as wonderful as it was. We both chose the five-course menu and my husband ordered the wine pairing with each course. The wait staff was attentive and very well-informed. The food was spectacular; the vegetables and meat were cooked perfectly. The sommelier was spot-on with his wine pairings. My husband chose the cheese course for dessert and he said that the chutney was not his favorite, but he still ate every bite. I would revisit Bluestem without hesitation and I look forward to doing so."

  • "My wife and I had a rare opportunity away from the kids. We chose to celebrate it by going to dinner at Bluestem. The atmosphere was very initimate and the service was phenomenal. The food was all about the taste -- it was delicious. Very gourmet setting and fantastic presentation."

  • "First time at Bluestem. Enjoyed our Sunday brunch there very much. Great selection of three distinct brunch course groups. My wife had cornbread with her meal, and I suggested that "extra" be added to my skillet mixture of eggs, sausage and veggies...and the waiter gave us an extra piece for me although it was not included in the menu. I thought it was a good addition for a "rich" skillet dish. We got there at prime time (Noon) and had to wait for our meals more than customary...but our waiter and the restaurant made up for it in the end. We look forward to taking our grown kids and their friends to this restaurant as well as coming back for a special occasion. We wanted to experience the restaurant before it was remodeled."

  • "We had a great dinner at Bluestem. They are closing for a time to remodel, so we are grateful that they weren't closed yet when we were in KC for the Big 12. I couldn't say enough about the food. We did the five course tasting and it was excellent."
