BluestemFirst time BrunchersBluestem does dinner like NO OTHER LOCAL RESTAURANT...there really aren't any comparisons, save the American, but Bluestem does it better in a more interesting, unique and inviting way. This was our first time for brunch. SCORE! Not only was the bill really reasonable, the food was just awesome. No attempts to 'remake' what you really want when you order Steak and Eggs, or Eggs Benedict...just the *finest* Steak and Eggs or Eggs Benedict imagineable. Perfectly cooked and portioned food is *so* much more desirable than some egomaniac of a chef choosing to stamp something "new" "innovative" and "original" onto a dish that is ideal the way it is....and in the process, making something that is less. LOVED THIS MEAL6/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and great flavorsGreat food and great flavors as expected for this fine restaurant. Several of the portion sizes were ridiculously small. The Branzino fish eentree was both dry and bland.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWOWWhat a great dining experiance, the best food ive ever had.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was a great surprise toIt was a great surprise to find and cool yet sophisticated place like this at the edge of the Westport area.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWhy can't I give 6 stars?!?!This is our third trip to Bluestem. This time we took my folks for their anniversary. We all have the five course meal, and everything was superb! My only complaint (not really) was that the small between course gifts from the kitchen combined with the "real" meal, meant that I was too full to enjoy my dessert course. It was tough, but I was forced to take it home to enjoy later! Staff was wonderful. With wine it was expensive, but well worth it for a special occasion, and with the attention to detial by the kitchen and servers it was totally justified!
What a great meal in a fabulous restaurant.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways wonderfulThe food has fantastic originality with wonder favors with beautiful presentation. Bluestem could easily be a top restaurant in any city on the planet. We ate at Jean Georges in December and enjoyed Bluestem just as much. In view of the quality, originality and the various options in the number of courses offered, you cannot find a better value for fine dining than Bluestem.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent ExperienceService was very crisp yet very friendly. All dishes, including the complimentary amuse bouches (amusees bouche?), were explained well and demonstrated great care in construction and presentation. Wine pairings were also well articulated and appropriate. Dining room was quiet even though mostly full (Thursday evening) . An outstanding experience all around!6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMromantic dinnerFood was great, different, excellent presentation. Loved the "treats" from the chef. Staff was super attentive, but not overwhelming. Excellent experience. Ambience only got 4/5 stars as the kitchen was smoky the day we were there.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing - as usual! The onlyAmazing - as usual! The only suggestion I have is to include gluten free desserts other than sorbet.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding RestaurantMy wife and I love going to Bluestem for a wonderful dining experience. It is pricey but well worth it for special occasions. The variety of foods offered is unmatched. It is small wonder that the Chef (and his wife) win top awards. The service is very attentive but never "hovering". Sometimes one of the items may not be to our taste but that is to be expected when so many different items are presented for each meal. The between course chef treats are fun to get and delicious. We would (and have) recommend Bluestem to anyone celebrating a special occasion.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial ExperienceThe food is always good. The menu is wonderfully written, you want to order one of everything. Coffee is the best. Even for breakfast it feels like a special occasion.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMDeliciousAward winning food and impeccable service. You can't go wrong. If the owners are there you can get your cookbook autographed.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food and ServiceBluestem is one of our favorite restaurants in KC, though we are only able to dine there on special occasions. We each had the 5 course dinner. The food and service was excellent. We have never been disappointed by Bluestem.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, great presentationThe 5 course prix fixe included many tempting choices. The service was attentive without being intrusive.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMSpeechless.Absolutely amazing! My favorite restaurant in the city! I can't put into words how wonderful our courses were b/c after each bite we were speechless!!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, great service&good hangThis is one of the truly epic food sources in KCMO. Eclectic menu offers delightful nuance to the usual basic food grouping, protein, fish, carbs and veges. Great prix fix menu with good wine pairings. Bravo!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food -- best in KC?It is no wonder why Colby Garrelts won "Best Chef in the Midwest" from James Beard. Food quality, preparation and presentation were all 5 star. Service was top notch. However, it is rather expensive, in excess of $100 pp. And that was the 3-course meal with wine pairing. Wine pairing should be considered a must since the pairings really work to enhance both the food and wine. Also, don't expect Applebee sized meals but the 3 course meal was plenty. Highly recommended.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat ExperienceWe were recommended to this place by many people so we checked it out for our 5 year anniversary. It will definitely be a restaurant that we give a repeat visit. Go for the 5 course meal though. It will give you plenty of options to choose from. It was nice that between every course you got a little sample of something, compliments of the chef. I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is very pricey but worth every penny.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMDo at least the 5 coursesThe food...uh, duh, was awesome. Pictures were taken for their beauty and the flavors met the expectation.. Wow. So wonderful! Service? Outstanding. Coordinated, graceful, knowledgeable, kind, considerate and on their game. Wine pairings? Spot on! And the wine director is super informative, fun and excellent at what he does. They offer 3,5 and 10 course options. When you dine there, do at least the 5 course meal! You really get a feel for the restaurant concept and are taken on a really neat and unforgettable journey. Don't be skerd! I can't gush enough about the food and the restaurant professionals that make that place as awesome as it is!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AM5 Courses of HeavenWe had a marvelous dinner last Friday night. The food was wonderfully prepared and presented. Clearly one of the top restaurants in Kansas City and the Midwest5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMAn experienceTruly outstanding and creative dining - nothing else like it in town - the treats from the kitchen just keep coming.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMSpectacular and inspired food-Spectacular and inspired food- as always. I am never disappointed with the food here. My only criticism is that I don't feel that the wine list/pairings are not at the same level as the food.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous ExperienceAlways a wonderful meal. They completely deserve that James Beard award! We only had three courses but had at least 6 amuse bouche/gifts from the chef in addition. Every bite was incredible. I had notified them prior that we had tickets for a show at Kauffman and they were very kind to get us served and out on time. It had been several years since I had been there and can't wait to return.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMPricy - but SOOOO Worth itThis was my third visit and each time continues to excite and amaze me. This is 1st class food - beautifully presented - artfully served - in a quiet and simply elegant space.
Don't be put off by the price - you spend that eating BarBQ!!
Take yourself someplace special - BLUESTEM!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is the best restaurantThis is the best restaurant in Kansas City! Outstanding food and service.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBetterFood preparation was back in form from our last visit - outstanding. The service is slightly off - food going to the wrong tables, brioche being brought too early for foie gras, wine service after the course was almost completed. We also ordered the special mushroom dish in lieu of the 1st course - but were still charged an extra $10.
I think Colby & Megan need to spend a little more time working the service issues at Bluestem instead of spending time at their new restaurant.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favoriteLove Blue Stem. It is how I would love to eat every night. Super. Delicious. The only complaint is always the noise level. It is always very loud.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMTasting menus; food, service,Tasting menus; food, service, and ambiance excellent; prices reasonable (didn't say cheap) for this level of excellence. Excellent wine at reasonable prices as well.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a great experience. AHad a great experience. A must for foodies out there. We had the 5 course with the wine pairing and it was wonderful.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were celebrating our daughter'sWe were celebrating our daughter's 25th birthday. The options are 3 - 5 or 10 course tasting menus. We chose the 5 courses. The selections were outstanding. Between the three of us, we had baramundi, steak and chicken entrees. None of them disappointed. The service very attentive. The ambience was understated and warm that allowed for easy conversation. With the 5 courses plus chef's complimentary items, we could not believe that our dining took 2 1/2 hours. The time seemed to pass effortlessly. All in all a very pleasant dining experience.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMIt had been a while sinceIt had been a while since we had been to Bluestem, through no fault of theirs. It seems they've tightened up their menu a bit, which is fine. They offer more little tastes and lagniappes than they previously did. They are still on top of their game; the food was uniformly excellent to very good, although the asparagus and beef dishes stood out for us. Highly recommended for a special occasion!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMIf you can afford it, it is a MUSTBluestem is definitely an expensive restaurant. But if you can afford it, it is worth it, honestly. It has to be for a special occasion but the staff there is really taking care of you, perfect timing all the time, for the wine, the food, service and gentle words time to time. It is classy but really cool at the same time. They're adapting their service to you and your feelings. Food is great, taste of it unbelievable and combinations which make difference between restaurant and that kind of restaurant. We've been there for our anniversary - first year of marriage - they offered specials, small but tasty in between our plates. Very good experience !4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMImpressedBeyond impressed! I did not have high expectations going in for brunch because I thought "it will only be breakfast food" but I was blown away with how the simple ingredients were elevated to a new level. Two thumbs up!4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMBluestem is a great littleBluestem is a great little place with great food and service. My husband and I enjoyed ourselves, particularly the smoked salmon and bagel. It was so delicious and a highlight of our meal.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMBluestem never disappoints.Bluestem never disappoints. The service is friendly and professional, the food exceptional. It is among Kansas City's handful of most innovative restaurants, and would be a destination restaurant in any city in the country. They seem to always bring their A game.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMy 5 course meal was amazing! My 5 course meal was amazing! The surprise bites from the kitchen between courses made the experience even more special.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMDon't be discouraged whenDon't be discouraged when you walk in the door and find a darkish, wood-floor-needs-scrubbing, run-down-velvety bar scene with TV... make a right and the ambience shifts. Great for brunch with other adults. Tasty, well-prepared food (I rarely eat home fries because they are too oily but Bluestem's are to die for!). Timely, effective, non-obstrusive service. Tablecloths and cloth mapkins a plus.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was amazing. WhenThe food was amazing. When I first looked at the menu I wasn't sure that I would like anything, but it was all fabulous. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to people that appreciate good food.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best food and the bestThe best food and the best dining experience that I have ever had. And, the single most expensive meal that I have ever had. To me, it is sad that such a wonderful restaurant has such a ridiculous price tag.
We chose the five course meal with wine pairings. The dishes were fabulous although I would have said that the wagu hanger steak was under-seasoned -- need salt. The wine pairings were fabulous and well chosen.
Service was impeccable. The chefs came out and met with a few tables but not ours. I assume that those were regulars. From the outside, you would never guess that such a restaurant was housed within.
Enjoy.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOur favorite when it comesOur favorite when it comes to outstanding in every category.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThe 5 course dinner menu wasThe 5 course dinner menu was amazing. From the amuse bouche to dessert, everything was delicious. Superb food: interesting ingredient combinations perfectly prepared and presented; wonderfully attentive service (I wondered idly where Meyer lemons come from and our server went and looked it up (China, BTW, brought to the stares in 1905 by a guy named Meyer)). Arguably the best special occasion restaurant in town.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative and innovative dishesCreative and innovative dishes presented beautifully. Food quality was excellent. Wine list extensive and fairly priced. Attentive and helpful service.
Despite the neighborhood feel, the cuisine is world class with an emphasis on native Midwestern ingredients. Recommend highly.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMKeep up the excellent work. The best place I have ever eaten in Kansas City. What a find.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe came in with the strategyWe came in with the strategy of letting the staff and kitchen simply pick everything for us. Great food and wine suggestions really made for a special night. Everyone made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Thank you.2/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
