Diner Reviews
  • "It's good brasserie fare, but absurdly small portions and for what they charge, food should either be great or portions should be larger."

  • "Great food, timely service, but no rushing. Knowledgeable wait staff, great recommendations!"

  • "This was my second time and I have only been for lunch. I really enjoyed it! They were great about filling the water, however, not so attentive for filling other drinks."

  • "I was really impressed with this restaurant and was surprised to find that it is family owned. It is right off of Market Street in the heart of downtown SF so it works well for pre-show dinners. We have been here a couple of times for dinner and lunch and the food was superb. My favorite is the the duck confit salad and the lamb meatballs. The charcuterie platter was also outstanding with everything prepared in house. They clearly use high quality ingredients and everything was thoughtfully prepared."

  • "Our dinner at Bluestem's was pleasant. The restaurant's interior looks nice. Staff is friendly. The food was really good. The only negative thing was that the staff is a bit to quick. When I was still eating, the waiter already wanted to take my plate. And the moment they took the plates from the table, the next course was already there. It felt a bit that they wanted us to go away. So if they change that, it would be a very pleasant place to have a lovely dinner."

  • "Welcomed by nice smile, attentive and smooth services, I am quite a frequent diner at this restaurant, and have never been disappointed, Only one thing this time -- we were seated at the "lounge" area. Seats and table are very low and small. They are not appropriate for business luncheon."

  • "Made reservations for a business dinner (11 plus people). I had emailed them ahead when I made the reservation and was so relieved to see we had this enormous round wood table that was removed in the corner so it was perfect for conversing. Everyone loved their appetizers, wine and entrees. Cannot thank you enough for making me look like a rockstar for selecting something on Market Street. We will definitely be back."

  • "My husband and I walked to this restaurant from our hotel Marriott marquis. The walk was lovely very nice area. Shops museum different redtaurants upscale. The host seated us at a table back to the bar in a long strip of tables probably worst table ever for my tastes. We asked to be moved to a booth, very cozy with a fun view if bar and great performance bar tender. Also an upstairs outside looked lovely from our seat. Our waitress was the best ever akeela love her. Menu awesome drinks great wine on trap yum highly recommended Enjoy"

  • "The burger here is good, and the happy hour menu (though note: ONLY served in bar area) is a bargain. But this is my second visit, and I must say that confusion reigns with the servers. We sat for 10+ minutes trying to flag a server -- apparently nobody had been assigned our table. Then the orders can wrong. As did the beers. And all of this with the sounds of a crying infant next to us and an overall loud din."

  • "Top notch service from the Hostess to the Manager to the Wait Staff. Started with the Lamb Meatball Appetizer - they were very good. Moved next to Lamb Burger (excellent), Smoked Trout Salad (good), and Skirt Steak (too chewy & could not cut). The steak is from gas fed open range beef and would be slightly tougher; however, the one piece we had was too tough. The Mgr & Waiter offered another replacement, but we declined. They apologetically took the item off our bill. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Profiteroles. Top dessert of the year for me to date! When leaving, the Manager gave us a sandwich to go as the one steak diner had not finished her meal. Now that is a restaurant that cares for it's clientele! Will be back!"

  • "I met a friend here as it got good reviews. The food is nothing great and we're in SF after all. The biggest let down is I asked for one small adjustment to add fish or chicken on the side to accompany my kale salad. I just wanted some protein. I was told the Chef had to approve that because he made the decisions about what went well together - as if a 40 something sophisticated eater wouldn't know and have my own opinion? I was denied my wish, which was really not that big of a deal. If they were this amazing place like Masa's I might give them the pass but they are a corporatey feeling lunch spot that can't claim excellence on any scale. Service was slow too having to ask for things several times. Pick another place..."

  • "My group enjoyed the food, but the service was subpar. Our server was very snobby and didn't want to answer questions we had about the menu. Despite our reservation, the host sat us last, which I believe had to do with us being a group of 4 girls in our early twenties versus the older patrons."

  • "A fantastic place to bring a client for lunch. Although, it either of you are in a Hurry- get the check after you order the meal. They are not considerate of your time. Food is amazing though"

  • "Active and loud, we went with a large business group that grew from 7 to 9 people and the staff were very accomodating. Service was friendly and responsive and the food was OK. A few of us mistakenly ordered prime rib, which turned out to be a bit tougher than expected. Veggies were good and fish dishes looked enjoyable. The dessert was good and wine list adequate. This is good centrally located restaurant that is very adequate for business dinners. Forget it for date night."

  • "Had my birthday dinner with 11 guests. They sat us quickly, service was timely for such a large party. We were all greeted with complimentary champagne which I thought was such a special touch. Everyone absolutely loved their meal. Sweet potatoes gnocchi was perfect."

  • "Our waitress was incredibly rude and the service was extremely slow. I commend the host for being accommodating when we asked to move to another table. Food was delicious, but will not go back due to the service."

  • "Very generic SF restaurant. Nothing to recommend it. We had to ask for bread, the lamb was raw and the fish overcooked. The passion fruit shave ice desert was a joke and distasteful. The wait staff were polite and attractive but the overall experience was very disappointing given the prices."

  • "We went for dinner on a Sunday night. The restaurant was not crowded. It took an hour and 20 minutes to get our food -- burgers and the fish special. We also had to flag the waiter down for every little thing, including the check. We wanted to like it and the food was not bad. But no food justifies that kind of wait."

  • "Second time dining at Bluestem. Overall we will come back to this place because the ambiance is romantic yet fun and the menu is wonderful and not overpriced. The service this time, however, was really rushed in the first part of the meal. Our serverr was nice and helpful, but was in a hurry through all our ordering---so much that we didn't order some things we would have because he left before we had the chance, and he accidentally forgot to take one person's order (obviously he came back pretty immediately to come get it). They were very busy that night, but I don't think that is something we should be made so aware of from a customer service standpoint. We only felt slightly stiffed, but overlooked it because everything else was great."

  • "They put us in the lounge instead of the main restaurant. Our waiter messed up our order and then blamed us for it. Poor service but the food was excellent."

  • "My dining experience at Bluestem Brasserie was wonderful. I came with three of my girlfriends for a "Galentine's Day" to sample their Valentine's Day prix fixe menu and enjoy a night out. Service was great, and all the staff were attentive and made sure we were well-informed about their menu items and champagne options. I appreciated the little flare of festiveness that came with all the female wait staff wearing tutus; very cute. Food was delicious and the plates were beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the "Fondue for Two" and would love to see it as a regular menu item. Will definitely come back soon and recommend to friends."

  • "I picked bluestem for its location waking distance from union square. The menu has a nice varied selection of relatively healthy and delicious looking options. Loved the cauliflower and wine on tap!"

  • "excellent food with thoughtful menu. the hostess was very accomodating when our flight was delayed and we needed to move back our reservation. downstairs seemed like pretty cool place but we were stuck in a small corner table upstairs. dinner would have been much nicer if we could have been seated downstairs."

  • "Great location near Moscone and Union Square. Tasty drinks and food. Lamb meatballs, truffle burger, fries, and sweet potato gnocchi were excellent. The oysters were tiny; wish we'd known they were Miyagis. Our server from Belarus did a good job taking care of our large group. Would def eat here again and recommend it to friends."

  • "Bluestem has a wonderful Sunday brunch, where their thoughtful and versatile menu really shines. Portions are generous, and favors are full. My favorite is the corned beef hash, because the duck fat roasted potatoes are incredible. The only problem is no one wants to share, as each brunch entree is too delicious!"

  • "From the tasty Bloody Mary start to the smoked trout appetizer board we knew we were in store for an amazing brunch! Highly highly recommend Bluestem! Long needed and overdue tasty place in downtown SF!"

  • "This place was totally empty, but I have no idea why! (Location?!?) There is a very eclectic brunch menu, including breakfast, lunch, and everything in between. There were nice, exotic touches to the food that made it more than you average brunch menu. Our waiter was super friendly (if a tiny bit awkward) and the cocktails were nice (though, admittedly, the weakest part of the meal). I would absolutely return next time I'm in SF!"

  • "The place has a butcher on-site so all the meats look outstanding. We got the burger (great!) and the barramundi (nothing to write home about and very small portion). It is definitely the place to go when you want a great quality meat dish. And if the weather is ok, the outside patio (on the upstairs deck) is a nice place to sit. If you aren't a big meat-eater though, I would take a pass."

  • "Nestled into a small corner of a busy block is a great place to unwind. The staff is especially accommodating and will to work with whatever dietary restrictions you might have. My party had a person obsessed with light cooking and the chef and server were more than happy to make adjustments to the plate so that it was just right for them. We were left to relax and talk at length, well after our meal, and wine, had been finished. The owner stopped in to say hello to us and was extremely pleasant. This is definitely a must stop for anyone who finds themselves near Union Square in downtown."

  • "The bar scene was a little loud in the beginning but it quieted down and the food choices were interesting, well prepared and very tasty. Service was very pleasant though our dishes didn't quite make it to our table at the same time. Good food trumps all; however, and we would go back for sure."

  • "My wife and I had a late dinner here in January, 2014. To start, she had a special fruity drink that she loved, and we (mostly me) shared a half carafe of their cabernet that was terrible. It was fizzy and may have had trapped carbon dioxide during fermentation or a secondary fermentation. It was pretty disappointing given the cost of the wine. My kale salad was delicious and the broccoli vegetable with cheese with the main dinner was also very good. Unfortunately, we both had a steak dish that was quite tastey, but tough."

  • "I choose Bluestem because they have a terrace on the roof that was highlighted in an article in the Huffington Post, but upon arrival we could see that no-one was seated there as it was a cool evening... but they opened it just for us! We watched all the excitement below on Market Street and listened to a jazz band that had set up on the sidewalk. We shared several entrees and appetizers, including a new creation... lamb meatballs - superb! We split a Kale Salad, the Grilled Chicken, the Winter Cheese board and several other dishes plus enjoyed a first rate Cosmo (my dining companion invented this drink at the Strand in Miami Beach) and a great IPA beer. Our server was on point, described the selections and was very personable."

  • "Service was a bit slow. They d not have fresh orange juice. My girlfriends ordered the French toast and it was suppose to have a hint of rose water but it the rose water was overpowering. I ordered the pancakes and they were on the dry side. I was expecting more from this place, but was rather disappointed."

  • "We wanted a nice place for a long overdue spousal date night near the financial district. Bluestem surprised us with their deck dining experience with heaters and a great view. Menu was very unusual and we enjoyed some non-traditional fare that was excellently prepared and presented. Service was a bit slow and the bill a bit high, but overall a great experience. The downstairs dining near the bar was so loud one could not have a conversation."
