Named after the indigenous North American grass favored by cattle, Bluestem will showcase sustainably produced beef from highly regarded purveyors with an emphasis on whole-animal utilization. Ingredients sourced directly from the ranchers. Savory items are balanced by a dessert menu of classic, brasserie-style selections.
A theme of terroir extends from the menu of house-made items to the carefully crafted wine list.

I would definitely recommend it, and return myself the next time I'm in downtown San Francisco. The first floor is the quiet fine dining section; the second more noisier bar area and finally outside dining on the third floor, in case SF is ever warm enough to eat outside. (We only experienced the first floor.)"

  • "I had the pasta special - a carbonara with an egg on it. It arrived cold with too much sauce. I ate it but did not love it. My friend had an eggplant sandwich that she had to completely deconstruct to eat. My server although polite was somewhat condescending and I found her annoying and did not enjoy her visits to the table. This was not my best visit to this lovely room."

Every aspect of the dinner (3rd time in a couple of months) is always great--from the wait staff to the food to the ambiance. If you are lucky to be at the restaurant when the weather is good check out the roof top area! You will love this restaurant!"

We were here on a Saturday afternoon. Not crowded and centrally located but not right in the main hub of stuff. Would eat here again for sure!"

  • "Took my girlfriend here for her birthday lunch and told the restaurant in advance. They were so nice to us as soon as we walked in the door, remembering her birthday. They even sent out the most delicious decadent chocolate cake on the house with a candle for her to blow out. We both ordered small plates (mac & cheese, the mussels, mushroom terrine & roasted cauliflower) - all tasted great & there was a lot of it to share between us. Have been here before & coming back again!"

  • "Ate here for both dinner and lunch and found the service and food uniformly excellent. Service was quick and efficient; there when you needed it, but not hovering or intrusive. Food was interesting (duck confit salad with fried duck egg was fabulous as was the fried green tomato salad) and the wine list more than adequate. Situated on Market, between 3d and 4th, is has easy access to hotels and Moscone. Good food, nice atmosphere, attentive service, and a great location combined with pricing that is reasonable and the place comes up a winner."

It is located in downtown San Francisco where high quality, reasonably priced restaurants can be difficult to find. The restaurant offers both indoor and outside dining. They offer a varied selection of both small plates and full size portions. Serving sizes are usually large and cooked to perfection. Try and mussels with chorizo - excellent. The restaurant is popular and reservations are recommended. The only drawback is large groups can get much too noisy. NOTE: YOUR STAR SYSTEM AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE IS NOT WORKING)"

The decor is very nice--rather techie--open and clean and simple but interesting. I liked the paper wall treatment. Service was friendly, efficient, and gracious. We chose this place because we read a review by Patricia Unterman that was very enthusiastic."

  • "We made reservations on Opentable for our friends 10th wedding anniversary. Four glasses of complimentary champagne arrived as a Happy Anniversary! Instantly we were very impressed. Our server was Allison and was very knowledgable, patient and was great! We started with drinks all the way around and the lamb meatballs and fried green tomato caprese. For entrees - Chicken two ways, Shrimp tortellini with halibut (mine - Yum!), Flat Iron Steak with fries & the Acorn-fed Pork. This restaurant exceeded our expectations."

  • "I had high hopes for this place based on numerous rave reviews online. The food unfortunately fell flat for my boyfriend and I. He ordered the 12oz ribeye medium rare. What he got was a piece of meat so dry he had to spit half of it out. For $45 I expected him to not have to struggle with his food. I ordered the mushroom hash, which sounded fantastic on paper, but turned out to be greasy and bland. We didn't even bother with dessert. The meal overall was mediocre at best. For the price I would definitely not come back."

Lunch was excellent - the confit salad, brasserie burger, and pork dish du jour were all perfectly executed. And we were surprised with the Honolulu Hangover cake for dessert... SO GOOD! Always leave room for dessert here! "

  • "My Croque Madam was not my favorite - the plain white bread seemed undercooked and there was way too much cheese. The duck fat potatoes were mind blowing though. The staff was super friendly and the place was great, my date enjoyed the eggs benedict thoroughly. I would definitely go back and try something else."

  • "Went here for a birthday lunch. The food was pretty good. The bone marrow with short ribs was exceptional and the charcuterie was nice. I had the steak frites and the steak was cooked beautifully. The french dip, however, was just ok and they did not have small containers to take home some au jus. That was sad. The mortadella sandwich was good though. I would come back since price seems reasonable and food is good."

The patio felt like we were in a private room, away from other diners. Our waiter was awesome. I wish I had gotten his name because anyone who has him is lucky. I highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion. "
