Diner Reviews
  • "We came here for a team dinner/celebration midweek. The food was high quality and unique enough to make a trip here worth it. The waitstaff was nice and not overbearing. Our group was fairly large (about 15). Everyone enjoyed the truffle fries (suggested by the wait staff), and their entrees, but it was dessert that really shined. The caramel rum beignets were the best!"

  • "food was disappointing. filets were dry and tough. pate appetizer was bland. pickled fruit was great."

  • "We have been to Bluestem once before, but the occasion was more formal than the simple lunch we had this time. We were greeted by very pleasant and knowledgeable people, one of whom recognized us from the last time, several months ago, and were given a table exactly where we requested one. The food was excellent, as before. The place appeals to a younger crowd, but the noise level is quite low nonetheless. Excellent!"

  • "The food was interesting, beautifully presented and tasty. The place itself it lovely. The service could use some improvement. Our waitress spoke a little to fast for us to understand her through her accent. We also had to repeat a few requests. We wanted wine with our meal but when it finally came, after, we sent it back."

  • "We both had filet mignon and their kennebec fries. Perfectly done, no complaints with the food. Service was fairly quick and good-natured. The menu is a little on the "foodie" side for our tastes, lots of things I had to google on my phone. We really liked that we were seated in the upper area next to the balcony barrier, so we could see the bar area. It also meant there weren't many tables near us, which was great. Not sure we'd have enjoyed it as much if we were seated below, where it was crowded and noisier."

  • "Our first visit to this very stylish spot we sat at the large oblong table in the window for a family brunch. The food was very good, and our server was awesome!! We returned to try it for dinner. The food was very good, and the service was OK based on the fact that I felt we were rushed even though I had communicated that our dinner out was for a special occasion. It left me a little unhappy."

  • "Just terrible food. Uncomfortable chairs. Strange ambiance....Would actively suggest people avoid"

  • "I was expecting a bit more..... Great space and service, but the food was under seasoned (except for the succotash which was awesome). I won't hurry back."

  • "This is a great brunch spot. The chicken and bacon in waffles were delicious! My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burger and it was extreme. Also great location, service and ambience."

  • "We went because of the beautiful menu. The restaurant is comfortable, plays great background music, has good service and nicely presented food. However it was too expensive for what we received. If you're going there bring friends so you can share and try several items. Not great for 2 people on a budget."

  • "Good food, lots of energy. Didn't realize they had upstairs outdoor dining. Bar a bit small."

  • "This is a great location in San Francisco for a business lunch. The service and food are impeccable. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Really had a fun time. Food was great, very lively scene. They were busy and graciously fit another unexpected member of our party in in the spot. Great, friendly service!"

  • "Perfect for a downtown business lunch. They were quite busy but staff handled everything smoothly. Food was very good, noise level fine for a work conversation. Loads of options for any diet, and very flexible. Grilled lamb meatballs were fantastic. I would absolutely go back for lunch or dinner. The perfect mix of SF style - professional but not stuffy."

  • "New place recommended by our hotel conceirge was a real surprise. Seated on time, great menu, servce and food. I would definitely recommend it, and return myself the next time I'm in downtown San Francisco. The first floor is the quiet fine dining section; the second more noisier bar area and finally outside dining on the third floor, in case SF is ever warm enough to eat outside. (We only experienced the first floor.)"

  • "I had the pasta special - a carbonara with an egg on it. It arrived cold with too much sauce. I ate it but did not love it. My friend had an eggplant sandwich that she had to completely deconstruct to eat. My server although polite was somewhat condescending and I found her annoying and did not enjoy her visits to the table. This was not my best visit to this lovely room."

  • "our server was very unsure of items on the menu and lacked any knowledge of what was being served at the bar. the food was good but the service had something to be desired. the management was very friendly though."

  • "Nice resteraunt excellent service. Our waiter was very attentive, I think the food was good but not great. We would go back and try different menu items"

  • "One of the best restaurants in downtown SF. Great for locals and tourists! Adam, the owner, is totally interested in giving you the best restaurant experience. Every aspect of the dinner (3rd time in a couple of months) is always great--from the wait staff to the food to the ambiance. If you are lucky to be at the restaurant when the weather is good check out the roof top area! You will love this restaurant!"

  • "Just wanted a light, but delicious lunch and a cold bottle of wine. We got it here! both the smoked trout and the duck salads were amazing. Would recommend them both! The atmosphere is casual. We were here on a Saturday afternoon. Not crowded and centrally located but not right in the main hub of stuff. Would eat here again for sure!"

  • "Took my girlfriend here for her birthday lunch and told the restaurant in advance. They were so nice to us as soon as we walked in the door, remembering her birthday. They even sent out the most delicious decadent chocolate cake on the house with a candle for her to blow out. We both ordered small plates (mac & cheese, the mussels, mushroom terrine & roasted cauliflower) - all tasted great & there was a lot of it to share between us. Have been here before & coming back again!"

  • "Ate here for both dinner and lunch and found the service and food uniformly excellent. Service was quick and efficient; there when you needed it, but not hovering or intrusive. Food was interesting (duck confit salad with fried duck egg was fabulous as was the fried green tomato salad) and the wine list more than adequate. Situated on Market, between 3d and 4th, is has easy access to hotels and Moscone. Good food, nice atmosphere, attentive service, and a great location combined with pricing that is reasonable and the place comes up a winner."

  • "This is the fourth time I've been to Bluestem Brasserie and I continue to be impressed by the creativity of their menu, the attention to detail, the succulence of the food, and the high quality of service. One warning: portions are huge!"

  • "We went with a group of ten. Several of us had the lamb appetizer and really enjoyed it. While, they were able to accommodate our group, even though we had members running late, they were not able to split the bill in more than 3 ways per table. Everything worked out, but this was a slight inconvenience."

  • "Had dinner here with a couple of friends, we ordered the meatballs which were great, and the hamburger which was good. Nice ambience, reasonable prices. Recommended"

  • "My daughter and I enjoyed the charcuterie appetizer very much, it was all so full of flavor. The Ranch cookout for 2 was a lot of meat for 2 people, but it was quite tasty. The butter beans side dish was outstanding as well."

  • "Hostess spent 5 mins talking to a waitress candidate and did not acknowledge that I was there. I had to interrupt and say I have a 11:15am lunch reservation? Not a great 1st impression for a regular at Bluestem."

  • "My wife and I have had a number of very good to excellent meals at this restaurant. It is located in downtown San Francisco where high quality, reasonably priced restaurants can be difficult to find. The restaurant offers both indoor and outside dining. They offer a varied selection of both small plates and full size portions. Serving sizes are usually large and cooked to perfection. Try and mussels with chorizo - excellent. The restaurant is popular and reservations are recommended. The only drawback is large groups can get much too noisy. NOTE: YOUR STAR SYSTEM AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE IS NOT WORKING)"

  • "The mushroom terrine was fantastic! Service was fantastic! We were celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary. We were given dessert--a big piece of chocolate cake-- which was so kind. The decor is very nice--rather techie--open and clean and simple but interesting. I liked the paper wall treatment. Service was friendly, efficient, and gracious. We chose this place because we read a review by Patricia Unterman that was very enthusiastic."

  • "This is a great place for a nice but not too fussy business lunch. Service is friendly and efficient and the food is tasty. Bluestem doesn't have a ton of character during the daytime but really, for a business lunch, it is a solid bet."

  • "We made reservations on Opentable for our friends 10th wedding anniversary. Four glasses of complimentary champagne arrived as a Happy Anniversary! Instantly we were very impressed. Our server was Allison and was very knowledgable, patient and was great! We started with drinks all the way around and the lamb meatballs and fried green tomato caprese. For entrees - Chicken two ways, Shrimp tortellini with halibut (mine - Yum!), Flat Iron Steak with fries & the Acorn-fed Pork. This restaurant exceeded our expectations."

  • "I had high hopes for this place based on numerous rave reviews online. The food unfortunately fell flat for my boyfriend and I. He ordered the 12oz ribeye medium rare. What he got was a piece of meat so dry he had to spit half of it out. For $45 I expected him to not have to struggle with his food. I ordered the mushroom hash, which sounded fantastic on paper, but turned out to be greasy and bland. We didn't even bother with dessert. The meal overall was mediocre at best. For the price I would definitely not come back."

  • "Took a new coworker here for lunch - and as always, Bluestem was a hit! The service here is stellar, and the location downtown is super convenient. Lunch was excellent - the confit salad, brasserie burger, and pork dish du jour were all perfectly executed. And we were surprised with the Honolulu Hangover cake for dessert... SO GOOD! Always leave room for dessert here! "

  • "My Croque Madam was not my favorite - the plain white bread seemed undercooked and there was way too much cheese. The duck fat potatoes were mind blowing though. The staff was super friendly and the place was great, my date enjoyed the eggs benedict thoroughly. I would definitely go back and try something else."
