Diner Reviews
  • "I had the pasta special - a carbonara with an egg on it. It arrived cold with too much sauce. I ate it but did not love it. My friend had an eggplant sandwich that she had to completely deconstruct to eat. My server although polite was somewhat condescending and I found her annoying and did not enjoy her visits to the table. This was not my best visit to this lovely room."

  • "Nice resteraunt excellent service. Our waiter was very attentive, I think the food was good but not great. We would go back and try different menu items"

  • "One of the best restaurants in downtown SF. Great for locals and tourists! Adam, the owner, is totally interested in giving you the best restaurant experience. Every aspect of the dinner (3rd time in a couple of months) is always great--from the wait staff to the food to the ambiance. If you are lucky to be at the restaurant when the weather is good check out the roof top area! You will love this restaurant!"

  • "Just wanted a light, but delicious lunch and a cold bottle of wine. We got it here! both the smoked trout and the duck salads were amazing. Would recommend them both! The atmosphere is casual. We were here on a Saturday afternoon. Not crowded and centrally located but not right in the main hub of stuff. Would eat here again for sure!"

  • "Took my girlfriend here for her birthday lunch and told the restaurant in advance. They were so nice to us as soon as we walked in the door, remembering her birthday. They even sent out the most delicious decadent chocolate cake on the house with a candle for her to blow out. We both ordered small plates (mac & cheese, the mussels, mushroom terrine & roasted cauliflower) - all tasted great & there was a lot of it to share between us. Have been here before & coming back again!"

  • "This was a great find. Close to museums and good shopping. Food and service were both lovely. The careful attention paid to the wine list was especially appreciated."

  • "Ate here for both dinner and lunch and found the service and food uniformly excellent. Service was quick and efficient; there when you needed it, but not hovering or intrusive. Food was interesting (duck confit salad with fried duck egg was fabulous as was the fried green tomato salad) and the wine list more than adequate. Situated on Market, between 3d and 4th, is has easy access to hotels and Moscone. Good food, nice atmosphere, attentive service, and a great location combined with pricing that is reasonable and the place comes up a winner."

  • "We went with a group of ten. Several of us had the lamb appetizer and really enjoyed it. While, they were able to accommodate our group, even though we had members running late, they were not able to split the bill in more than 3 ways per table. Everything worked out, but this was a slight inconvenience."

  • "This is the fourth time I've been to Bluestem Brasserie and I continue to be impressed by the creativity of their menu, the attention to detail, the succulence of the food, and the high quality of service. One warning: portions are huge!"

  • "Had dinner here with a couple of friends, we ordered the meatballs which were great, and the hamburger which was good. Nice ambience, reasonable prices. Recommended"

  • "My daughter and I enjoyed the charcuterie appetizer very much, it was all so full of flavor. The Ranch cookout for 2 was a lot of meat for 2 people, but it was quite tasty. The butter beans side dish was outstanding as well."

  • "My wife and I have had a number of very good to excellent meals at this restaurant. It is located in downtown San Francisco where high quality, reasonably priced restaurants can be difficult to find. The restaurant offers both indoor and outside dining. They offer a varied selection of both small plates and full size portions. Serving sizes are usually large and cooked to perfection. Try and mussels with chorizo - excellent. The restaurant is popular and reservations are recommended. The only drawback is large groups can get much too noisy. NOTE: YOUR STAR SYSTEM AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE IS NOT WORKING)"

  • "Hostess spent 5 mins talking to a waitress candidate and did not acknowledge that I was there. I had to interrupt and say I have a 11:15am lunch reservation? Not a great 1st impression for a regular at Bluestem."

  • "The mushroom terrine was fantastic! Service was fantastic! We were celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary. We were given dessert--a big piece of chocolate cake-- which was so kind. The decor is very nice--rather techie--open and clean and simple but interesting. I liked the paper wall treatment. Service was friendly, efficient, and gracious. We chose this place because we read a review by Patricia Unterman that was very enthusiastic."

  • "This is a great place for a nice but not too fussy business lunch. Service is friendly and efficient and the food is tasty. Bluestem doesn't have a ton of character during the daytime but really, for a business lunch, it is a solid bet."

  • "We made reservations on Opentable for our friends 10th wedding anniversary. Four glasses of complimentary champagne arrived as a Happy Anniversary! Instantly we were very impressed. Our server was Allison and was very knowledgable, patient and was great! We started with drinks all the way around and the lamb meatballs and fried green tomato caprese. For entrees - Chicken two ways, Shrimp tortellini with halibut (mine - Yum!), Flat Iron Steak with fries & the Acorn-fed Pork. This restaurant exceeded our expectations."

  • "I had high hopes for this place based on numerous rave reviews online. The food unfortunately fell flat for my boyfriend and I. He ordered the 12oz ribeye medium rare. What he got was a piece of meat so dry he had to spit half of it out. For $45 I expected him to not have to struggle with his food. I ordered the mushroom hash, which sounded fantastic on paper, but turned out to be greasy and bland. We didn't even bother with dessert. The meal overall was mediocre at best. For the price I would definitely not come back."

  • "The food was fantastic, I would highly recommend the asparagus salad, mussels and lamb. The owner was super personable and came over to check on us and had a nice conversation with my aunt and uncle. The server was friendly but not super helpful on the wine list. She had to ask the bartender a lot of details and recommendations and then would report back."

  • "Took a new coworker here for lunch - and as always, Bluestem was a hit! The service here is stellar, and the location downtown is super convenient. Lunch was excellent - the confit salad, brasserie burger, and pork dish du jour were all perfectly executed. And we were surprised with the Honolulu Hangover cake for dessert... SO GOOD! Always leave room for dessert here! "

  • "My Croque Madam was not my favorite - the plain white bread seemed undercooked and there was way too much cheese. The duck fat potatoes were mind blowing though. The staff was super friendly and the place was great, my date enjoyed the eggs benedict thoroughly. I would definitely go back and try something else."

  • "We love Bluestem and have been visiting the restaurant since it opened in our neighborhood. Last night's meal surprised us because the food was not very good. Usually, every dish is delicious, but this time the food was just so-so. I hope this was solely a one-time occurrence because the location, ambience, menu, and drinks are wonderful! "

  • "We had a wonderful brunch here complete with great craft cocktails, an amazing menu which made it very hard to decide what to choose, and impeccable service."

  • "Went here for a birthday lunch. The food was pretty good. The bone marrow with short ribs was exceptional and the charcuterie was nice. I had the steak frites and the steak was cooked beautifully. The french dip, however, was just ok and they did not have small containers to take home some au jus. That was sad. The mortadella sandwich was good though. I would come back since price seems reasonable and food is good."

  • "This restaurant is a great find. We requested a patio table through our OpenTable reservation and it was ready for our party of 13 when we arrived. The food and wine were great. The patio felt like we were in a private room, away from other diners. Our waiter was awesome. I wish I had gotten his name because anyone who has him is lucky. I highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion. "

  • "Picked it for a business lunch, fit the bill nicely. Decor and ambience are cool and upscale. Food sounds great on the menu, but it is pricey and spotty. Lamb meatballs - awesome. Fried chicken sandwich - bland and dry. Yes, fried yet bland and dry. Desert menu looked great but we skipped it...we were having lunch afterall. Complimentary sparkling water a nice touch."

  • "Bluestem Brasserie is a lovely restaurant and we had a great experience. The food is original and tasty, the service well above average. Notable servers: Wayne at the bar ... great service with a doting style, he made me feel right at home in a busy, energetic restaurant and set the tone for the rest of the evening for an outstanding dinner experience. "

  • "I used to love this place when in town for a conference or while staying in the area. The place is somehow noisy even when relatively slow. Speaking of slow it takes 45 mins to get food on average. We are talking about a burger....biggest reason I will not return is the chef in the last 3 visits did not cook meats to any of my guests liking. 3 strikes you're out. "

  • "The cocktails and food were fabulous. Highly recommend the Ranch Cookout For Two, it was perfectly prepared. Our server took our order and then completely ignored us, even being rude when we asked questions. It was very disappointing that the service didn't match the food! "

  • "I've been to Bluestem at least 10 times and I've never been let down. The standard menu is amazing but I've had even better luck ordering one of their specials. I had Duck 3Ways last Wednesday - A L'orange, sausage and pate on toast along with a beet salad. It was beautiful to the eye and absolutely delicious. I shamelessly ate every bite. My friend ordered the salmon and I noticed she polished her plate too. We started with the Oysters and the Bone Marrow. The marrow was yummy but my friend was from New Orleans so she thought our oysters were pathetically small in comparison to their palm sized version back home. She finished with a PBJ deconstructed desert that was rich and I had the 50/50 sundae. Starting diet tomorrow(wink)"
