Diner Reviews
  • "Really good food, and a lovely room - huge bar, nice roomy booths big enough for 4. All food choices were very tasty - chicken and waffles might be better elsewhere, but all other items were delicious. Nice selection of tap beers, wine by the glass, carafe and bottle. With the creeping price of wine by the glass, having the choice of a little more in a carafe is helpful to the wallet. Service was very lukewarm."

  • "The food was great and service attentive. The server kept my water glass refilled without being asked which always scores big points with me. The decor is warm and inviting. The music was too loud for conversation, though. I asked the server if it could be turned down. He said he would ask, but I didn't notice any change. I was there with friends from California whom I rarely see, so conversation was especially important. Do restaurants really expect diners to just sit and look at one another? It should be background music, not the main feature."

  • "We recently went to Bluestem with a group of 6 people and had a great experience! The atmosphere was great and the food was even better! I would highly recommend the wild acres turkey burger topped with homemade guacamole and bacon as well as the fish tacos. Their menu features a lot of fresh local ingredients and they get a lot of their meat from local farms. This place is also a great place to go with a friend or significant other and belly up to the bar for dinner. They always have fun new beer specials and the bartenders are very friendly! Love this new neighborhood gem by French Meadow!"

  • "Nice variety of white flights; I told our server I like pinot grigios, and she suggested the Spanish whites, which for $12 provided a good taste of 3 wines, which I liked. I had the blackened fish (tilapia) tacos, which were good and came with a small side salad in a yummy dressing. My dining companion had the turkey risotto, which seemed kind of heavy. The dried cranberries were a needed sweet contrast to the meet and risotto, but he thought it needed a vegetable on the side or on top. (I ate the leftovers, and I thought it was pretty good.) We liked the atmosphere and the bar area. There is a more private back area which could be good for a group or small event."

  • "Food was above average. Site enjoyable. Staff competent. Seared scallops were the best thing to come to the table with shrimp and grits and fried chicken on a waffle that were both satisfying. An appropriate place for an anniversary, wouldn't be surprised if we end up there next year as well ( my wife's favorite spot). Having a full bar will be a significant addition.."

  • "Bluestem has the perfect balance of great food and tasteful options. We normally go there for brunch but tried the dinner menu for the first time. We were not disappointed. Everything down to the house dressing on the side salad was delicious."

  • "My daughter is going to Japan for 4 months and wanted to go somewhere that had good beer and vegan food. Everything was excellent. The tofu, potato, Brussel sprout special was divine! My boyfriend enjoyed the beer flight and I enjoyed the white wine. This place is at the top of our favorite places in the Twin Cities!"

  • "The lesson here is to stick with French Meadow for breakfast and lunch. Bluestem - the evening version - can't seem to handle the service aspect. The food was great, the bartender was great, but the server was mostly absent and unhelpful."

  • "I arrived about a half hour before my reservation time. I checked in with the hosted and told her I had a reservation at 5 and that I was meeting someone. I asked if I should just sit at the bar to wait and she said sure. I was thinking when my party arrived, they would grab us and sit us at a table, but they never did. There was only 1 table seated and two other parties at the bar - not busy. I even told the bartender that we had a reservation and asked if we should be seated or could we just get food at the bar. So we ended up eating at the bar. The food was great! We tried the potato rosemary flatbread and the mac and cheese! Both excellent. Service was slow on bringing checks and boxes for our food."

  • "We loved our first dining experience at Bluestem. We're both longtime fans of French Meadow for weekend brunch, and it was fun to try their sister restaurant for dinner. They had great selections for all diners, including a nice array of vegan choices which is really refreshing to see. We got a great wine recommendation and really enjoyed our selection. That said, one piece of constructive feedback was that our original wine choice could not be accessed because their wine storage (while beautifully structured as a visual design element of the restaurant) was blocked by other tables. That was a bummer, and I hope they solve for this in the future. That said, the alternative we were offered was wonderful. We'd highly recommend Bluestem!"

  • "We went to Blue Stem Bar for Valentine's Day. It was our second visit. The evening was wonderful and all we had hoped it would be. The food was delicious and creative. The service was impeccable. They graciously accommodated my food allergy issues. Our table was ready on time. Our only disappointment was that the music could get a bit loud at times making conversation a bit more difficult. But we would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it."

  • "The service was very slow - it took forever for everything - from getting our drinks to ordering to getting our food to having our server check on how it was (did she even??). our server seemed very unexcited about our presence and spent more time at another table. the ravioli - recommended - was very tough around the edges - inedible. trout was good for my fellow dinner. my friends rachel tasted like fish. and my husbands box to go - never arrived with the check. we left for a show without it, not realizing! it would have been better to have eaten in the front (french bakery) - it would have been a better experience. P.S. bathrooms were absolutely freezing!"

  • "This added bar space is the perfect addition to French Meadow Cafe. It definitely has a different feel but it contrasts in the right way. I love the decor! Especially the birch bark trees against the walls and all the twinkling lights strung about. The food was great, from the zen salad, the duck, miso salmon and the turkey risotto. Wine list was good and they had a great prosecco to finish the meal! I would go back again in a heart beat :)"

  • "The good was wonderful but it was so noisy in the back room we could hardly hear each other. There were too large groups and everyone was shouting - it was not a peaceful dinner. I have eaten there many times before and this is the first time everything was not perfect. It was a particularly busy Saturday night but the staff was outstanding and so was the food. I think if we had been seated in another area it would have been a 5 star experience."

  • "Nice space, enjoyed The Booth. Party of five was very comfy, food very tasty, wine list quite sufficient to our needs. Looking for an amusing, delicious and satisfying dinner, at a place where a family of 5 adults could relax and catch up. Excellent , friendly service. Menu is large with wide appeal. Dessert was very good, but not spectacular."

  • "We didn't care for the music (loud, jarring) but our server was great and the food tasty. More veg options would be fantastic!"

  • "Menu was great, main courses delivered, apps too. Love Zen Salad. A bit loud for no music playing, they didn't have our open table reservation for some reason, but they were able to seat us anyway, we were right by the bar. I would like to sit elsewhere next time and see if conversation was less impacted. Servers are fantastic! Chris"

  • "We arrived, were seated and then the wait and the service began..at a snails pace. Water took 2 trips, 10 minutes and served by a less than enthusiastic server (not ours). About 15 minutes later, we had still not been greeted by our server so we could just order drinks. We asked another server passing by our table for our waitress to place a drink order. 5 minutes later a young lady came to our table without a greeting or smile and mumbled "you wanted to order?" I was shocked and embarrassed. Hy husband's steak arrived thin and overcooked. My shrimp and grits were okay..the pasta and miso salmon were also average. This should have been a special evening, instead it was amateur hour (s). We will not be back. Ever."

  • "Slow service made the difference. I will try again because the food was great (although not hot, in my case) in the hope that the slow and elusive service was not the norm. Trout and chicken were delicious. Good beer selection."

  • "The salmon entree is perfection each time. When it comes to the details of the menu, the coffee, the desserts, this too is beyond anything else I've experienced in a restaurant. All the cozy booths are an additional bonus for long, private conversations with friends or romantic dates. No attitude, just excellent food and good service."

  • "The food and vibe of the restaurant was nice. I was looking for a non-alcoholic drink (other than a soda) and there weren't any on the menu. The waitress and I talked and she asked me what I was looking for in a drink. I told her and she said that she thought she could make something up in back for me. The drink was great and I liked the engagement I had with her. What she suggested for my entree was awesome: steamed mussels in a great broth-sauce! The amount of mussels I was given was great. Enough for dinner! Thank you, to our waitress."

  • "Food was very good---we even recommended it to our fellow diners. Unfortunately the poor server was so overwhelmed it took forever for them (and us) to get served, Really odd since you'd think the French Meadow would understand the need for a full staff to compete in Minneapolis ...there are plenty of other nearby restaurants with very good food."

  • "This was my second visit to Bluestem, first time for brunch was great food and a comfortable booth toward the rear of the room. This return was for dinner; food was great, though table near side door was occasionally chilly. First rate service, well prepared fresh food make this neighborhood gem worth a visit."

  • "Hostess seated only 6 out of 8 of us...and was waiting for the table next to us to leave, to get 2 more seating. Awkward! Food was wonderful, great crowd of people. Would absolutely go back, but maybe not with a big group. Seemed they had a hard time with that."

  • "Unimpressed with the service-- incredibly slow, indifferent, inattentive. Server didn't mention any specials for the day and didn't offer to refresh beverages. Not much, if any, distinction between Bluestem and the adjacent French Meadow. Bluestem decor is lovely, intimate space, but odd/confusing to enter thru maze of tables in FMC. Had reservation thru Open Table, but when someone finally acknowledged us after 5 minutes of looking at and ignoring us, she told us to just sit anywhere. Seems we could've ordered off the menu at FMC and sat in the more upscale Bluestem if we'd wanted to. At a glance, the menus seem identical. Appreciate that they've retained the farm-to-table concept for Bluestem. The food was very good and fresh."

  • "Interesting place. Good food and drinks. A little out of the main area of Minneapolis (I was there for a conference at the convention center and was suggested to go to this restaurant, but it was an expense to take a taxi). A little disappointed that the price of my meal was a lower on the menu than on the bill I received. Good thing I noticed."

  • "I loved the overall vibe of Bluestem and loving French Meadow Cafe I was so excited to try Bluestem. The food was very good and they had several vegetarian options but our waitress was very rude. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day but she was less than friendly and actually rolled her eyes at me when I asked for more hot water in my tea. She checked back with us once, never smiled, and just seemed annoyed to be working. Not sure if I will give Bluestem another try."

  • "Nicely appointed dining room, although there are relatively few full booths. I like the wine rack wall splitting the nice, fairly active bar area apart from the rear seating area. The Lemon & Black Pepper Cashews go well with a decently broad selection of draft and bottled beers. The wine list is pretty limited, with those available by the glass at the lower end of the quality spectrum. We split the garlicky hummus plate, sauteed greens, and fish tacos, which filled us up. Service was a bit spotty, but they got the job done on a moderately busy Friday evening."
