A word from Bluehour
Bluehour means different things to different people. In French literature it describes any time of day "of heightened emotion." In Portland it has come to mean "a great place to dine."

As the premier modern restaurant in the Pearl District, Bluehour opened its doors in 2000, with what Gourmet Magazine describes as, "the most sophisticated, contemporary food in town." Guests choose between the elegant dining room or the casual café and bar.

Simple, delicious and classic describes the Mediterranean cuisine we create in the Bluehour kitchen each night. The menu is printed daily, but Bluehour standards remain, like the pillowy potato gnocchi with black truffle and the perfectly seared, bacon wrapped sea scallops. Our cheese cart is among the finest on the West Coast, featuring regional and international artisan cheeses.

  • "Nice atmosphere, great waiter. Okay, food was a mixed review. I loved my pork loin-the most tender ever. Delicious! My husband had the salmon. Portion on the small side and he said it was "average" as to taste. He had an appetizer that was corn based and it wasn't good. On the plus side, the waiter was very nice and the restaurant was nicely appointed. I would try it again. I think it's about what you order."

  • "We ate here on a trip to the Pacific Northwest. We decided to give it a try because it had a 1000 points reservation time and I didn't know any better. Well it was soon worth it. We had one of the best meals we have ever had. The food was interesting and flavorful without being weird. Our waiter was great, even recommending a local mural attraction for us to drive around and see. He said that the chef was new and I would say he was a great choice. Also the drink menu was creative and fun. I can go on forever, but in essence, just go here, you won't regret it."

  • "What a great big nothing. Three of us dined. My wife and granddaughter had seared Ahi as their main course. Both servings were improperly cooked.....the outer 1/2 of the fish was white and in inner was closer to what it should look like. It was apparent that the cook had no idea about preparing seared fish. I started with the cauliflower appetizer which was tasteless and soggy. My main was a very bland piece of chicken."

  • "With its gorgeous dining room Blue Hour has always been a place we take visitors but didn't make it into our regular rotation with their small portions and spotty service. That seems to have all changed since we had a two delectable entrees (pork chop and chicken) that were perfectly prepared with inventive but filling sides and the prices more reasonable than I remember. We'll definitely be back and not just once or twice a year."

  • "Much to my surprise and disappointment, my ribeye was charred to a crisp on one side, which detracted considerably from an otherwise pleasant enough evening. Could easily have been a one-off dish, but I have come to expect better of Blue Hour, especially since the beef dishes at the sister restaurants are setting a new standard for the region. Will not deter me from returning!"

  • "Had reservation, Monday night, wasn't busy, seated right away. Waited at least 15 minutes before anyone came up to us. Finally the manager asked us if we'd like a cocktail, waited another 15 minutes to get them. The wine server tried to serve the wine across the table (could have walked up to the person who wanted it) and spilled some on the table and splashed the guest with the wine. She apologized (accidents happen) but then went back around the table across the guest who wanted the wine and proceeded to pour it again from the same awkward position. My steak was not bad, but my husband didn't eat his. He said it was filled with grizzle. This is our third time there but have decided we wouldn't go back again."

Didn't receive our entrees until 2 hours into our meal. We actuall had a different server start cleaning off the table and asking if we wanted dessert before we even received our salads. Poorly ran. Poorly managed. No one had a clue. Worst restaurant experience ever."

  • "We love Blue Hour. The food is superb, the service excellent, the atmosphere lovely. AND they will cater to my husband's need for low salt food -- cooking fish, burgers, french fries etc without any salt. All too many restaurants have everything already so salty and pre-cooked that they cannot be flexible. They always have a couple of fresh fish items on the menu at night, at least one for lunch, several seasonal salads, several pastas that can be appetizers or entrees, yummy desserts. Haven't tried the cheeses because of their salt content but they look fabulous. Expensive but not silly. The other night we shared a delightful burrata salad and each had perfectly cooked black cod with tiny red quinoa. Wonderful."

  • "I always enjoy the ambiance at Blue Hour and feel it is a sophisticated place with an after hours supper club feel. I had a wonderful salad with strawberries in it and the best duck breast with potatoes croquettes. It was like candy! Others had the lamb and lamb ragout gnocchi. My friends loved the Italian red they drank but I stayed with sparkling water. We were too satisfied for dessert."

  • "We've been going to Bluehour for years. It's remained a hot spot for drinks and / or for dinner. But our recent visit has turned us away... The staff was accommodating we had multiple friends join us through out the evening and each person was welcomed by the staff and service was terrific as usual. However our dinner, the halibut, came out smelling fishy and I wish I hadn't eaten it but I did. I regretted it all night - if you know what I mean. The desserts - truly were awful. I'm not sure if their chef was out on holiday or what has changed but it wasn't the BlueHour we're use to. "

  • "This was my 3rd time to Bluehour. The first two times were great. However this time it was only satisfactory. Our waiter wasn't very prompt (I had to keep on asking for ice tea since I do not drink. But my two companions didn't have any problem getting more wine). The salad and dessert were excellent but my duck breast was lukewarm. I'm still going to recommend Bluehour to friends."

  • "Blue hour is always one of our favorites and go for all occasions. Food is usually and consistently great. However, on this one occasion we all ordered the ribeye steaks (4) medium rare. They all came well done. We returned them and got back rare to almost raw.. Disappointing. Had friends that had never been and wanted to show off one of our favorite places. The service is always excellent and good to see the same people. He was very quick to try to correct the mistake. We understood the fault was with the kitchen. We will of course come back but hope this wouldn't happen again-especially with steak..... Sacralidge."

We started with a half dozen of the freshest oysters and progressed to a crab and scallop pasta dish for my wife and the best roasted duck breast I've ever had for me. Add a moderate bottle of wine, dessert with a tawny port and you have all the hallmarks of a great meal. This was our first trip to Bluehour and hope to go again sometime soon."

Everything took an extremely long time to come out - even simple happy hour bar food (were there over 2 hrs for a simple dinner without drinks). Ordered dinner as well as bar food for appetizers. Very expensive for the amount of food you get. If it wasn't for the vault card deal (buy one entrée get the other free) would have been very upset."

  • "I like Bluehour. The food is very good. My dining companion and I had the chicken and halibut respectively. Chicken was very tender and quite a lot of food actually. The Halibut was prepared very well but I think the chicken was actually better. The pan fried oyster appetizer was very good as well and pretty decent portion. The prosecco we had went well and the service was also very good."

  • "Great wine list. Cheese service is a fun change in the Portland market. Our service was inattentive and slow. He offered good advice on the menu. I had the roasted Lamb (excellent) and my wife had the halibut (also excellent, if small). We shared the roasted cauliflower and arugula salad (excellent). Bruce Carey's restaurants are always memorable and aside from the service misstep this was another great meal."
