A word from Bluefin Restaurant
Classic and creative sushi, sashimi and other Japanese dishes, many showing international influences, in a stylish contemporary setting, from Nobu Matsuhisa alumnus Takashi Abe.
See all photos >
We eat at Bluefin quite often. It
was not up to its usual standard Friday evening. Maybe it was because chef Takashe Abe was busy doing other things -- and one of the other chefs prepared our Sushi Omakase. There was a noticeable difference from the last time we had the Omakase and Abe was able to prepare it."

We enjoyed a mixture of the very
creative small dishes and classic nigiri. Food quality was top notch and presentation was beautiful. We ordered in sets over a two hour period and no one rushed us, plus questions were thoughtfully answered. Highlights were the kelp salad and spicy tuna on crispy rice."

Had the chef's menu and sake
flight for lunch. Every bite was divine, from seared halibut to the freshest sushi and sashimi ever. The sashimi salad was as beautiful as any presentation in Tokyo, and as delicious. We eat scallops a lot, but the scallop sushi was the best scallop ever. The $35 price for the multi course menu was good value. All in all, a superb lunch."

Sub-par food. Terrible service.
Managers/Waiters with negative pushy attitudes. This was a terrible birthday lunch. I had high expectations for this classy restaurant with fab reviews. I was very wrong. They don't like children, and when I made the reservation I mentioned we had a baby and needed a highchair but they do not have any and will give you attitude. I asked to bring my stroller in, which most restaurants are OK with...but they aren't allowed either. The entire lunch I couldn't wait to leave. I will not be coming back because the food was nothing special. I've had better sushi that cost me less than half the price of one roll at Bluefin. Overall a terrible experience. I would not ever recommend this place if you have taste buds."

We've dined here many times and
this time it was very good but not as spectacular as it had in the past. The sushi, tempura and other cooked items were excellent. Our food with a $40 bottle of wine was $180 which is somewhat high for 2 people. The restaurant was quite empty for a Saturday eve."

Rumor was that this restaurant has
the best sushi in Orange County. Rumor was right. Selection, quality all great. Just be ready to open your wallet - this restaurant falls on the $$$$$ category."
Dined on 2/19/2014
Sushi was high quality. worth the
price. I will return."

The fish was very fresh. The
waitstaff was knowledgable. The bluefin roll was incredible! Highly recommend."

Always wanted to try bluefin as
was not able to go when it was Abe in Newport. The food was excellent even though it was the restaurant week special. The service was very good and they were able to seat us even though we were a little late. Servers were efficient but would have been nice if they were a little more friendly and explained the food and the sake a little more. Overall a great meal."

I used to visit the restaurant
(and the chef's previous restaurant) for omakase and always thought it was a special treat, as the food was unique and the arrangement was aesthetically pleasing. However, my most recent visit turned out to be a great disappointment. The array of food was just various sushi which did not look special and some of the fish were soft and textureless, which led me to think that they were not fresh. I will not view Blue Fin as a restaurant worthing going for special occasion any more."

Our group of 4 diners enjoyed the
sushi and sashimi. Two of us ordered the Lunch Omakase, which was inventive, delicious, and much more food that we expected. The other two liked the Lunch Bento, and marveled at the variety of the individual dishes and how well they were prepared."

I love Blue fin! They have the
best sushi! Ordered the restaurant week omakase sushi & it was delicious & fresh. Also had the sake flight because I couldn't decide on a cold sake."
Dined on 1/24/2014
My wife and I visited Bluefin for
the first time during Restaurant Week. We first ordered sushi which was exceptional. Next, we both ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. These selections were spotty. The sushi was excellent but the soup was average. Overall, the meal was good but a little inconsistent."
Dined on 1/24/2014
We were expecting better quality
food the tuna was not #1 grade and served at room temp. One of the good things are the portions are large. Zaget gave a rating of 28 witch is great we did not find it to be that good. Maybe we were there on an off night."
Dined on 1/10/2014
This restaurant has the best sushi
we've ever had. Interesting and unusual choices, quality that is fine. A variety of cooked options and salads as well. Just one issue: The sushi comes 2 pieces to an order and the rolls easily serve 3-4. The menu should let diners know this. The waiters are knowledgable about the sushi and are able to describe the offerings. We have seen children there many times and they always seem to enjoy themselves. There is a counter or table service, but make a reservation!"

After many great dinners at the
bar, first time at a table. Terrible service. Rude, inattentive, uneducated. Poor listening skills. Food was excellent but overall experience was disappointing. Too bad."

Having Been to Bluefin many times
in the past, this restaurant never disappoints. Chef Abe is truly a talented chef, he is able to consistently provide innovative and delicious dishes. Thanks for another excellent dining experience."
Dined on 12/31/2013
The calibre of the sushi is always
wonderful. Plus the specials are great as well as creative. They remember regulars here. Extremely enjoyable."
Dined on 12/26/2013
The preparation, the presentation,
the food quality, the tastes, everything was just right at Bluefin this past Saturday evening. One of the best Omakase meals we've had -- anywhere."
Dined on 12/21/2013
One of the best Sushi restaurants
in Southern California hands down. My girl and I are sushi snobs and we are always blown away at Bluefin's freshness and quality. It's a pricey but well worth the money. Would recommend to all."

We love this restaurant and
actually I was here 3 nights in a row, but last night our server Alex almost got into a fight with one of our guests. From the minute we sat down he was rude to our friend because our friend asked Alex where he was from. Our friend is from Prague and noticed Alex's accent and tried to make conversation with him and Alex took that as an insult. My friend apologized saying he did not mean anything derogatory by it and Alex would not drop it. He continued to provide poor service and when he came to our table he would ask not if we wanted anything else, but to be rude to our guest. It became very uncomfortable so much that my husband repeatedly had to ask Alex to stop. We were very embarrassed."

If I could, I would have given it
a 4.5 stars because it is an excellent Japanese restaurant. Menu is inventive and it is fun to try all the different items because everything is so good. My only complaint is that while the sushi is excellent, it lacks that extra something to achieve greatness."

We had been to Bluefin about a
year ago and had a great experience. However, I see why there was 2 open tables on a Friday night as I found the food to be good, not great, and service was definitely lacking. Had to ask for refills of water and tea repeatedly, and then once the food came, no one came back. 30 minutes later we flagged someone down for the check. I would probably not go back as the price is not backed up by the food or service."

Wonderful Saki, great menu,
excellent deserts! Truly enjoyed the experience."

I was not a big fan of sushi ...
but boy, I am now converted ... lol. Food is wonderful!"

Always a very scrumptious meal.
The fish is always to high fresh standards! The presentation is always simple and perfectly done! The atmosphere is beautiful and comfortable. Service is always very good!"
Dined on 10/20/2013
It was our first time at Bluefin,
but we enjhoyed every minute. The service was great, as you would expect. But the food was the star, especially the sushi and rolls. Everything we tried was delicious and we only scratched the surface. We'll be back to continue exploring the menu options..."

We go to Blue Fin 2 times a month
and we are never disappointed. You must try the Blue fin Roll if you like Tuna and Albacore. Its expensive but worth it!"
Dined on 9/29/2013
Food was great & presentation was
nice but the service took a while so not a good place to go if you're in a hurr"

My husband celebrated his birthday
(a day early) with his favorite food - sushi. He, his son and I all ordered the last item on the menu, a variety of sushi and a roll - a bargain for all we received. We added an extra roll, which was almost too much food! The waiter was very good, and brought a variety plate for a special birthday dessert for my husband, which we all enjoyed. We have been here before and always enjoy it."

Bluefin continues to impress.
Definitely get some of their specials. Bluefin Roll is still a favorite."
Dined on 9/9/2013
Bluefin lived up to its high
ratings. The food was outstanding, and I'd also recommend the Bluefin martini. Prices were high, but I knew what to expect, so this was no problem. Once seated, the service was very good. Only hitch was that although we made reservations three days ahead, we still had to wait about 15-20 minutes for a table. But the hostess was very apologetic and as soon as a spot cleared up, they cleaned it and prepared it right away for us. The hitch was handled well by the staff, so it did not impact the experience negatively."

Love the variety of offerings both
at lunch and dinner, gracious and helpful service, saki flights are very nice!"

The best sushi in Orange County.
We come here multiple times per year when we visit Newport Beach. Wonderful, creative sushi and other fresh fish dishes. Perfect for sushi lovers and those who prefer their fish cooked. Service was great. They remember regulars."

tables way too close together.
waitress was talking from behind my back and over shoulder."

Really good sushi right here in
Crystal Cove. We had sushi omakase...it was really great. Great selection and great variety...very fresh fish....A great find!"
Dined on 8/24/2013
Sashimi was truly outstanding;
creatively handled. Rolls were "more fish and less rice" -- also very creatively done. Overall an excellent experience. We will be back!"
Dined on 8/17/2013
I have been to Bluefin before, but
this was a special birthday treat for a friend and her family. We all had the omikase, and we shared a bottle of Dom Perignon. The Dom wasn't marked up as much as most restaurants! And, our omikase meal was fantastic. The fish was fresh, the service attentive, and they even let us take a few of our rolls to go because we were so full! Not only will I be back, but so will the members of my group!"
Dined on 7/27/2013
Although you definitely pay for
it, this restaurant serves excellent sushi, just enough non-sushi dishes for the faint of heart, and an impressive array of fine sake. Make sure to try some of the daily specials, and a sake sampler if you're new to better sake."
Dined on 7/24/2013
Bluefin is upscale sushi and
Japanese food. Everything we had was wonderful. It is a little pricey and the space is small but it has a nice cozy atmosphere. I loved the lychee margarita and the miso cod is outstanding. The only downer was that they don't have coffee (?)"
