Great restaurant in Downtown San Jose. The service was very slow, however. Granted they had numerous people who were going to a concert (like myself), but they are getting quite a crowd from occasions like this and should be staffed appropriately. Other than that, the food was great, the look of the place was awesome, and the energy of the place was good.

We went on a Wednesday night so there wasn't a crowd and we were seated immediately for dinner. The sushi was excellent and very fresh. We ordered mostly off the chef's specials which provided us with a variety of sushi that you're not able to see in all restaurants. The oyster shooter was very nice, great flavor and texture. We will be going back.

I made a reservation for our son's birthday celebration at BlueFin after our friends recommended this restaurant in our neighborhood. Japanese food is his favorite cuisine and BlueFin didn't disappoint. Our overall experience was over the top: attentive and respectful service, awesome food recommendations from our server, delicious Lychee and Pomegranate martini, fresh sashimi/sushi/oysters which were 100% consumed. Our daughter's chicken teriyaki was moist and uniquely cooked & flavored with onions unlike other Japanese restaurants' method of cooking. We will definitely return as this is now our favorite Japanese restaurant!

Overall friendly and attentive service with excellent sushi. Prices are not cheap, but the quality is good. Only negative is that as the evening slows down, the wait staff seems to hang out in the kitchen chatting with each other rather than walking the floor to check in on tables (want another roll? Another beer? Refresh your water? Want your check now?). I can't tell if they don't want to rush us or or if just lost interest in us.

Went here before a concert at HP Pavilion - the neighborhood didn't leave a great impression but the restaurant was wonderful. Fun little booths, we had great service (efficient, friendly, and fast - we were hurrying to make the show), and the food was quite good. Very enjoyable - I'll be visiting BlueFin again before my next event at HP.

  • Fabulous fish

The sushi and sashimi here are fabulous. The fish makes you feel you are in Tokyo, and they take great pride in having special and interesting fresh fish flown in. Regrettably, they have an irritating habit of taking too long to serve the first dish. The wait is always over 30 minutes and often over 45 minutes, even for appetizers. Recently, I got so hungry waiting that I asked for edamame beans which the waiter promised to bring really fast, but even that took upwards of 15 minutes. The wait staff (named appropriately) are apologetic but helpless. As a frequent customer, I have tried different ordering tactics, but nothing works. My advice is to go for the fresh fish, but do not go hungry or you will be starving before the fish arrives

Very good food. Service this night was a bit slow as they seemed slightly understaffed for the night. Arrived at 5:45, had a wonderful mean, and made it just in time for the Leondard Choen Concert at HP Pavilion (about a block away) st 8:00. If I go to another concert at the HP Pavilion I will definitely return to Bluefin.NOTE: I spend several months a year in Japan and have a personal policy of not eating shushi or sashimi in the USA - it always dissapoints. But this night I made an exception and the sashimi was just fine.

I chose this restaurant based on the Happy Hour menu listed on their website. We were attending a show at the HP Pavilion, and I emailed the menu to friends I was meeting. Imagine my surprise when we were told that menu was not in effect by the bartender. He said it was 'policy' that the menu was not in effect whenever there was an event at the Pavilion. When I pressed why that wasn't stated on the website or the menu, he said it wasn't his fault, he wasn't involved in policy. When I asked to speak to a manager, he said he was the manager. When I asked to speak to someone above him, nada. While this wasn't the first time we had eaten there, it WILL be the last. The food is good, but the handling of that incident was a turn-off.

First time and loved it! The only bump came when my daughter and I ordered peach cosmos, the waitress came back to tell us the experienced bartender hadn't arrived yet and the one there didn't know how to make these drinks. Since she said he should arrive shortly, we said we would wait. I rated the service 5 stars, because not5 minutes later, she came back with our drinks- her boss who was also behind the sushi bar made our drinks for us! I think he has another career waiting for him, the drinks were great! Major points for creativity to get the job done! Food was great, service great- I'll be back!

I was on vacation from NYC visiting San Jose, CA to celebrate my birthday with friends. I needed a fun place with great food to have dinner. This place was so much more than I expected. I loved the shot glass yellowtail in ponzu sauce so much I ordered two. By far the best sushi I have ever tasted and the menu selection was so extensive. Everything was perfect! I cant wait to go back!! The staff was delightful. Jay was wonderful. They prepared their best dessert and sang Happy Birthday. Love it! :))

The food was great. Decent sized rolls. A bit pricey. We were among maybe 6 other tables in the restaurant. So, it was not busy at all. It took about 45 minutes to get our food. Out uncooked food. There's no reason it should have taken that long on a slow evening. I may or may not go back. I wouldn't go out of my way to back there.

Blue Fin was a good sushi restaurant, but not the best, and overpriced for its quality and ambiance. It's a warehouse feel inside, with only a view of the big street, decor and feeling is not elegant enough to match the prices. Service was decent. In general, it was good but not noteworthy.

Went again with a friend from out ofthe country. Food was excellent, as usual. Service was a bt slow (also as usual). Seems to alwas be 1 person too few either in the kitchen or the wait staff. When the waitress gets to the table, she is friendly. But fairly long breaks between check ins - I assume since we were waiting for rolls to appear from the litchen, she did not have much to check in on. Food comes out in waves, which is OK if you want to share, but not good if you each had 1 roll you wanted. For the prices, I expect them to invest in a bit quicker staff.

Before anyone took our order we sat for a good 20 minutes as one server after another passed without acknowledging us. Eventually our order was taken, but it took forever to come out of the kitchen. One plus: we were comped with bowls of miso soup to compensate for the long wait. The sushi -- a variety of rolls -- was really good. But the portions, for the price, were stingy. I also had ample opportunity to practice my lip-reading skills.
