Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of our go-to (often!) favorite restaurants. Danny Mayer's places never disappoint, with consistently good food, service, and atmosphere. We love the ribs, lean brisket, mac n' cheese, chocolate cake (we order a whole cake ahead to take to birthday parties), fried chicken, desserts (the dessert sampler is great!), and the fact that they are large enough to accommodate larger groups and groups with kids. We have one nephew with terrible and extreme food allergies. When we called ahead of time, they were very understanding and took the list and asked the chef for suggestions. Always beyond helpful and friendly. We love so many Union Square Hospitality Group restaurants that our family now gives us gift certificates for Christmas!"

  • "There are better BBQ restaurants in NYC that are less expensive. It has nice décor and is suitable for a business lunch but the food is disappointing. This is not an uncommon problem for BBQ restaurants that try to do too many styles at once. On the bright side the beer list is good."

  • "Great Ribs, barbecued meats - sauses. Casual - not formal dining - but excellent food."

  • "This is a great place to go for lunch on the weekend, casual and laid back with really good BBQ. There are lots of kids and strollers and bustling around, but nice and comfortable. Food is really good, the appetizers and deserts too. The brisket and pulled pork were what we had. It wasn't the best BBQ I've ever eaten, but it hit the spot and there were enough affordable options too. Staff was friendly and there was a nice area in the back with sunshine and windows that was unexpected. Clean place and quick if you want it to be. We were in/out in under an hour."

  • "Blue Smoke has an excellent bar, there's always some kind of special deal going on (most recently, boutique bourbons from the South) and it has a nightly scene that makes it fun. The BBQ is excellent if a little pricey, the sides and desserts are also excellent. If you're in the mood for ribs, go! We like the Flatiron location best. Lots of character with a view of small garden if you get a table in the back. Downstairs tables are vibrant, festive; upstairs more private and quiet for conversation. One of our fave places to go in Manhattan. Book in advance if you want to sit downstairs w/party of 4 or more."

  • "The food at Blue Smoke is good but not great. Everything else about the restaurant, though, is so delightful -- its friendly and efficient service, plus its convivial atmosphere -- that a meal here is always a happy event. I can't think of another restaurant about which I can say the same."

  • "My grandson declared this to be his favorite restaurant with good-sized portions of really good meat and side dishes. The rest of us could not match his appetite - teenage boys can eat anyone under the table - but thoroughly enjoyed our meals."

  • "Ive been here tons of times, have had the pulled pork, the sampler (ribs, chicken, brisket) and ribs on their own. Always really enjoyed it but well nothing sang to me. Well this time I tried the beer-braised short ribs and it was the best thing Ive had there. And their pie of the day was coconut cream and the best pie Ive had there and the best coconut cream pie Ive ever had. They need to make that pie permanent!"

  • "Blue Smoke, Big deal. Cole slaw was a neutral color, memphis ribs were undercooked and my key lime pie was frozen. The food ,how do you say...sucked? The service was the only thing that kept me seated."

  • "This was a delicious experience! Our whole family loved this restaurant! I recommend this restaurant to everyone! This is a place not to be missed! Our son really felt welcomed and special here, and that is priceless! Thanks for a wonderful meal!"

  • "I was going to say Blue Smoke is dependable, but so are fast food and quick serve restaurants. I think the combination of menu and service make Blue Smoke the best barbeque option in the city. I'll be back."

  • "Everytime we visit NYC we have to leave 1 night for Blue Smoke. Gotta have the brisket, mac cheese, corn bread and hot fudge sunday!!! Alway great service, upbeat and positive!"

  • "Blue Smoke was one of the first high end BBQ places in NYC and continues to thrive. While it can be noisy, if you request the back room it is quite tolerable. We shared apps of the terrific Chipotle wings, and a special of fish tacos and shrimp corn dogs (yummy). I had the salt and pepper beef ribs; my wife the chicken; our friends the baby back pork ribs. Everything was flavorful and moist --- sauces were good --- nothing was very spicy, by the way. Sides were creamed spinach and the sweet potato fires. Stuffed, we shared one dessert --- delicious Key Lime pie that was better than most I have had in Key West. In all, still dependable; not at all stuffy; lots of fun!"

  • "We had a great experience at Blue Smoke as we celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary this week. We reserved with Open Table and made a note that it was our anniversary, so would they mind giving us a quiet corner so we could talk? Much to our surprise the waitstaff greeted us with complimentary champagne a few minutes after we sat down, and when we ordered an ice cream sundae dessert, they wrote "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate on the plate. So elegant and special - and all of that while we licked our fingers clean after sharing some sides (the beans were amazing and the fries were excellent), the rib sampler (perfect for 2) and wings (not spicy, but delicious). We had so much fun, and look forward to coming back with friends and family!"

  • "My husband I were heading to a broadway show and decided to have dinner at blue smoke because we've gone there before a few years ago. I ordered the baby back ribs which I had before but found that the ribs were rather very dry not as good as I remembered. The sweet potato fries were really great probably the most enjoyable of the meal and my husband enjoy his chicken even though he only eats white meat. The drinks were good not watered down like some place. The atmosphere was not too loud as we were able to have a decent conversation without raising our voices."

  • "Really friendly and attentive staff. Fun for the kids. They got the normal kids menu stuff with crayons etc, but then they also got to decorate a cookie that they baked for them and handed back sealed in a plastic bag when we were done with lunch. The spear ribs, pulled pork and brisket were all extremely good. My 6 year old picky eater loved the ribs. "Best meat ever!" Reservation is recommended, since the place fills up fast as soon as it opens. GREAT place! :)"

  • "Blue smoke was ok... Nothing to write home about ... Went there on a Friday night it was great as soon as my group and I arrived we were seated. The first table was rather tight for six people and when an unexpected friend showed up they staff gave us a much better table to accommodate everyone. Overall the meal was okay, drinks were ok ---the blood orange margaritas were awesooooome !!! Must try and the chipotle wings... It's a cool place the experience ok...."

  • "As usual, the food was good. Excellent BBQ. The roasted brussels sprouts were delicious. The mac and cheese was creamy ( avoid it you are counting calories). Good bar, well made cocktails. Apart from the food, the table service was good and cordially. However, my experience at Blue Smoke is always tempted with the interaction with the host/hostess. This trip she neglected to tell me the rest of the party had already arrived when I checked in, although they had checked in as well. Secondly no one asked to check our coats, and lastly we were seated 15 minutes after she told us the table would be on time. Needless to add, I had to asked again how soon we will be seated after the reservation time passed."
