The food is lovely, but there is a
disconnect between the details provided on the menu and what appears on your plate. For example, the zucchini fries are breaded, which is not part of the menu description. The salmon entree includes potatoes and tomatoes, also not listed on the menu. As someone seeking to avoid all grains and nightshade vegetables (including potatoes and tomatoes), this was an unfortunate surprise. Learn from my mistakes and ask for further details prior to ordering if you also have dietary restrictions."

I have endless raves about the
food. The farm fresh taste is the one to beat/ I cannot begin to tell you about the delicious homemade pasta. AMAZING! The only thing keeping this restaurant from perfection was the service. For most of the mean our waiter was missing in action and we had to literally go find someone to take out next course order or get our bill. For a restaurant as tiny as this one, you think the service would be much better. You can see every table when standing in the corer of the room so there is no excuse for not having spectacular service."

This was a great neighborhood
find! Loved the wine selection, food and ambiance. Also, it was refreshing to discover a fantastic late night happy hour menu. The only negative was the service. Our server was nice, but BEYOND OVERLY ATTENTIVE. I used to be a server/bartender and even then I felt like our server was more of the "helicopter server" type. He kept asking us how we were doing and if we needed anything, which is fine, but he did so like every 5 minutes! No exaggeration. I enjoyed my dinner nonetheless, but it would have been more ideal if we were able to enjoy our night out in relative peace. I don't think all servers at this place operate in the same manner that he does though."

My Husband and I went early (5pm)
for Valentines day and it was just wonderful. Cute place, friendly and engaging staff and the food was wonderful. Try the Albacore appetizer and scallops you won't be disappointed."

The food was fantastic. The only
down side was that we had a reservation for 7:45, we were not seated until almost 8:30! Other than that, a little pricey, $9.50 for a cocktail, but happy hour is spectacular."

Anthony from the get go. Creative and delicious craft cocktails. Perfectly balanced options for restaurant week menu, and exceptionally done. Only negative was the cigarette smoke occasionally wafting in from large open windows street front."

We picked Blue Ribbon as a place
to reconnect with a couple of friends after some time apart. Unfortunately, one of them fell ill but we decided to keep the reservation. They've made great use of a not too large space in Hillcrest and offer a great selection of food. We tried the Diver Scallops and the Loch Duart Salmon and are still discussing which was best. I know I'll be craving the scallops for a long time and will be looking forward to a return trip to dig into some of the other offerings. And DON'T miss the butterscotch pudding. Our waiter offered to fetch a spatula so we could get the last bits out of the jar and we seriously pondered the idea! Nice craft beer and wine selection and the staff was superb."

I was excited about trying out
Blue Ribbon Rustic Kitchen, as their sister restaurant Blue Ribbon Artisan Pizza is one of my all time favorite. I arrived at the restaurant 15 mins before my reservation time, and the hostess made an abrupt comment about me being early (the restaurant was empty!!). She seated us near the open door and asked if we could move down as the draft from the door was quite chilly. She said they would be closing the door soon (door did not close for almost an hour). It took at least 15 mins for a waiter to acknowledge we were there. It went downhill from there. Server was not attentive, was less than enthusiastic in answering questions about the menu. Food not so good and neither of us felt well the next day."

The vibe was amazing. The beer was
very smooth. The food... Outstanding! We checked this spot out for San Diego Restaurant Week as well as my birthday and we were not disappointed. The short ribs with kale served over the polenta cake was ridiculous. (I mean that in a good way). For dessert, I normally go for anything chocolate and peanut butter, but decided to change it up and try the butterscotch pudding with salted caramel. Ummm... I could have eaten a vat of that stuff... man oh man... I wanted to go home and immediately try to replicate that dessert. Soooo good. So yes, I enjoyed eating here. need to go again to make sure I just wasn't really hungry and anything would do... but I am certain, that isn't the case. I'm picky. :)"

The noise level was very high, and
the background music was fast tempo with a relentless beat. After half an hour, I just wanted to finish and leave. The food was very good. Service-wise, our waiter was fine, but we were annoyed when we were asked to keep our knives and forks when the appetizer plates were removed. Not enough silverware on hand, or an untrained worker? It made a bad impression, at any rate."

We were selecting from the
Restaurant Week menu, but I think we did pretty darn well. For apps we had the Albacore crudo with grapefruit and avocado (this would be even better in the summer on a hot day, but still great) and the DiStefano burrata (made in house and just amazing). For entrees we had the diver scallops which were done perfectly and I had the pasta which was good but slightly too salty for me. Glad we saved room for dessert. The butterscotch pudding is the kind your mom used to make, full fat and amazingly tasty. We'll definitely be back. There were some items on the regular menu I'm just waiting to try out!"

Somehow my reservation was lost,
and we were seated at a tall table by the front window The waitperson was overwhelmed, and service was spotty Food was ok, shirt ribs were meaty, but scallops were only two (but cooked perfectly). Fried Brussels sprouts were a popular item. And the Caesar salad was more than ample Butterscotch pudding was delicious as was the chocolate tart. More caramel and pretzel bits please"

Went for restaurant week since
girlfriend wanted to try it. Had reservations for 6:00 but restaurant didn't have any available tables for another 15 min. Sat at the bar and saw they have a happy hour during the week ti'll 6:30 that was listed on the menu provided. We were sat at a table soon after and ordered our food. Appetizers were pretty good, entree's were mediocre and my girlfriend actually couldn't finish half of her dish since one of the items apparently tasted like baking powder. Waiter just blew it off and kind of laughed. My short rib was whatever, nothing I would ever seek out again, Desserts were decent. Surprise was at the end, we got the bill and apparently no happy hour was honored during restaurant week, even when listed."

BRRK is an easy walk from Landmark
Hillcrest and has a nice rustic atmosphere. Pasta's all made in house. Had the Bucatini Amaratriciana and it was rich and heavy, but, good. Also had the gnudi (great), crudo, and scallops. Wine list is lacking with only one Italian red and white on the list considering the pasta focused/Italian style menu. We avoided it for a while thinking that parking would be a problem, but, it's quite easy with a validation at the Union Bank lot around the corner. Will go back"

This location failed multiple
times for previous unfortunate restaurants. When I saw a new sucker putting money into the space I feared for them. I probably would not have tired it out until our neighbor insisted we go. We've now dined there over a dozen times and it remains my first choice of neighborhood spots. Each time I leave I plan on a menu item to order the next time. There are too many great choices for one dining experience so plan on several. Anthony is our favorite waiter but they are all very good and we have not noticed any turnover of staff since they opened. It can be loud at times because of one large center table. If that table has a large party it will be loud so avoid restaurant week."

We eat out a lot, and this meal is
hands down the best we have it in awhile. We started with the ahi, and the octopus with oxtail ragu, insanely good. Then for dinner we had the branzino over a shrimp pearled pasta, and the short ribs over garlic polenta, OUTSTANDING. For dessert we had the chocolate peanut butter tart with pretzel crumbles. Our server took great care of us, and the food came out timed perfectly. We will be back. AND.. they validate parking, restaurants downtown could learn a lot from this team."

Highly recommended, however the
place is on the small side so expect a bit of noise. High-end comfortable atmosphere: smart table placement to make the most of the space without overcrowding, exposed (clean) brick walls and wrought iron details. Great menu and well-priced for the range and quality. The CRISPY GOAT CHEESE GNOCCHI was excellent. The service is friendly and attentive even with a full dining room. Hillcrest-hip, welcoming, no attitude. I already have plans to go back next week."

Although the restaurant can get
abit loud and the seating cozy, the atmosphere is fun, light and perfect for a saturday night dinner. The food is a bit pricey, but well worth it and the service work as a team to provide the best for all customers. We found yet ANOTHER great Blue
Ribbon restaurant.....our first find was in Encinitas with the Pizza.....now, meeting up with friends from the Point Loma area, we decided on Blue Ribbon Rustic Kitchen in Hillcrest. Parking in the structure off 163 was easy! Food was wonderful, creative and tasty. Our waiter was able to describe the dishes accurately for taste and texture differences that really helped us make choices! As noted on other comments, brussel sprouts are top notch, scallops so fresh and perfectly prepared, great pear/arugula salad......a memorable dinner....just a bit noisy for easy conversation! We will be back, AND, we will recommend this! We were there early on a Friday nite- glad we made reservations!"

When we drove past it the first
time I was seriously considering canceling my reservations. I had spent a long time that afternoon looking for a new fun restaurant for my birthday dinner. I found this restaurant and thought it would be a good fit, modern, urban, great food reviews. But the outside it looks like the one bar you see in a small town. It did not match the decor of the inside which I saw online. But that being said the food was amazing. I would recommend this place to any of my friends."

Everything we ordered was great,
except the panna cotta. I couldn't stop eating the brussel sprouts. The duck confit gnocchi was superb. Braised shirt ribs were ok. The sweetbreads were delectable. I would definitely come back. Next time I'll try the risotto."

I'm sure this place is a lot
livelier on Friday and Saturday, but at 9.30 on a Sunday, it was just what we needed after seeing a show at the La Jolla Playhouse. Great food, attentive and knowledgeable service, and just enough other late night diners to make us feel comfortable. As everyone says, get the Brussels sprouts! And the ravioli were just amazing too."

I tried making reservations for 9
people but the website wouldn't allow. But when we got there, we had a table fit for at least 11. I'm glad we went though. Anthony, one of the servers, was great. He was very attentive and fun. The food was delicious too. I'd go back for a glass of wine at the bar. It'd be great also if there was a selection for gluten free eaters."

The food is spectacular but the
service is spotty. When you enter its like a neighborhood tavern. The seating is somewhat uncomfortable. The wine corkage fee is only $12. As you look around you think "oh my God, what have I gotten myself into". AND THEN THE FOOD COMES!!!!!!! What a magnificent surprise. It was exceptional! If you seek this place out, don't be put off by the neighborhood or the ambiance of the restaurant......you will be rewarded for the effort with the magnificent cuisine. DOnt forget desert....Lemon meringue pie in a cup."
