Blue Plate Taco -
Best Restaurants in Santa Monica
Hello- I have come to blue plate
taco 3 other times before, always been pretty good experience. Took my folks this past weekend and it stunk, especially when it's 150 bucks. The service was shakey, guy kept telling us out food was coming up and our drinks would be right out. Well- the drinks finally arrived with out lukewarm tortilla soup and one second later our average at best lobster tacos came one second later which tasted and looked bad . I apologized for bringing my guests to the place."

Would have been a fun place to go
for drinks, but I thought the food was marginal. Our party of five sat outside on a high top with great view, but very windy and cold in July. Felt as if the food was being thrown at us in a hurry to turn the table around. I was surprised at all the great food reviews because that was not our experience. Would not go back."

Great little spot! Fun for a
casual dinner at sunset!"

Well worth the wait! To be fair I
had a reservation for 8pm and I had to call to let them know I was going to be late because of a late flight coming in with guess from out of town. So I asked if they can still accommodate us for 8:30, they said sure! Come on in! We arrived at exactly 8:30pm. We waited for 45 minutes and we were angry to say the least. The manager came over to apologize for the wait and gave us complementary drinks and chips/salsa and guacamole to hold us over! After we sat down and ordered our entrees I have to say they totally redeem themselves! The shrimp taco's were done to perfection and the veggie taco's had truffle oil on them...yummy! I will definitely go again and be a little more patient!"

We happened to walk by The Blue
Plate Taco on our way back from the pier to our hotel. We decided to try it because it was within walking distance & smelled delicious. Glad we stopped in. Food was DELUCIOUS & staff was very friendly."

The food is so fantastic and the
atmosphere is superb! Nice to be right across from the beach."

I recently dined at Blue Plate
Taco with my daughter. The food was tasty and portions were fine, but the service was awful. Our server, Abby, was very busy chatting throughout our entire meal. She took our order correctly, but by the time our appetizer arrived, Abby had failed to bring the drinks that we ordered, or even pour water. She did not return even once after our food was served to ask how it was. Rather, she stood about 12 feet away from our table chatting with another server. We noted that the servers in the patio area were working very hard, while ours inside hardly worked. I might consider returning in the future, but only if I could be certain that our server was actually there to wait tables, and not to socialize."

This place is great if you want to
sit outside and eat dinner and have delicious drinks. You have a great view of Santa Monica Beach. This is a great place for groups but it can get a little noisy."
Dined on 6/25/2014
Pro: - great view - our server
was attentive - interesting food choices - good tasting food Cons: - took forever for food to come out - super expensive - tiny portions - cramped outdoor seating Don't get me wrong, I'm ok with paying for good food. But for ~$18 (after tax/tip), eating the 3 smallest tacos in the world leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Better food for better prices can be yours elsewhere."
Dined on 6/24/2014
Food was very tasty, portion a
little small for the price. Great location, loved being across from the ocean and really cool ambiance."
Dined on 6/22/2014
I am never disappointed in this
restaurant. The waitstaff is attentive, the food good and the prices are very manageable. I have ordered through the menu so many times, that I now only am enticed by the specials. So far, they are consistently good. I never thought I would order a rice bowl in a Mexican restaurant, but it is stellar."
Dined on 6/19/2014
Had lunch there one day - had to
go back the next day to eat more delicious tacos! Ended up trying the chicken tinga, fish, vegetable, and lobster tacos. All were fantastic! Salsa and chips were also delicious."
Dined on 6/17/2014
Fun, festive and delicious!
Excellent service, excellent menu.."
Dined on 6/13/2014
Great food , great service!
Reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?"
Dined on 6/7/2014
For the 3rd time, I met friends at
Blue Plate Taco and have been on all occasions impressed by the good food, the service and the moderate prices. It is located across from the Santa Monica pier and couldn't be more indicative of the southern California lifestyle, if it were a movie set. Great food, ginger margaritas a must and the service combined excellence with California casual. Will keep going back over and over again..."
Dined on 6/4/2014
Energetic atmosphere and great
patio location with their made to order guac, delish yet potent margaritas and amazing tacos definitely makes this a Santa Monica go to. "

What else do you need??! This was.
Great place, good energy, great with kids but woul also go without."
Dined on 5/25/2014
Great table staff. I recommend the
shrimp tacos. They were delicious. Also, the specialty drinks and great."

Idk what the hype is. Unpleasant
dining Experience. "

I was excited to try as I'm a huge
fan of BP Oysterette but the experience ended up mediocre. Our 8:30 reservation did not get sat until 9:15. They told our group of 7 they would send a round of drinks and guacamole as a make good. We were sent one pitcher of margaritas that ended up being about half a drink/person and when we got the check they included the guac w/ the bill. The employees were nice but I was just not impressed with the way they handled the situation. On top of it, the food was okay but aside from good chips and guac, I don't think anything we had was particularly amazing. I doubt anyone in my group will be back there anytime soon. It's a shame as it's a great location and I love the ambiance of the place itself."
Dined on 5/17/2014
Very loud music. Seated on top of
next party. Other couple left after a drink due to uncomfortable proximity to next table. Made for a rushed, unpleasant dinner."
Dined on 5/17/2014
Went here on a Saturday night with
one other person. The bar was so loud we could barely hear each other; however, the food was great."
Dined on 5/10/2014
I'm a big fan of the other Blue
Plates, so I came in with high expectations which were not met (and wouldn't have been regardless.) Sent back my Veracruz -- tasteless fish, one sliver of olive and about three capers (described on menu as having both). One of the servers (not my original one, who disappeared) was kind enough to bring me salmon instead -- which was better -- although I was charged for that instead of the lower priced Veracruz. My date's fish tacos were tiny -- more like appetizers; even so, they weren't very good. Even the salsas were disappointing -- tomatillo and their basic one (don't know the name but it was the only one offered) were too sweet. Patio noisy, crowded inside. Best thing was the skinny margarita!"

A great place to eat, friendly and
clean. Yummy Mexican food and drinks!!!"
Dined on 5/4/2014
This was my second time at Blue
Plate Taco and, much like the first visit, the food and service were impeccable. The location is central to the action of Santa Monica and it's a perfect spot to people watch. If you haven't been yet, don't walk, RUN!"
Dined on 4/29/2014
Table wasnt ready at the time pf
the reservation. Have yo wait 15 minutes."
Dined on 4/19/2014
i definitely recommend sitting on
the patio, especially on a nice day! we were seated next to some of the loudest (and rudest) people on the planet and the noise was bouncing off the windows...i couldn't even hear myself speak! but the food is pretty good, and the waitress was really nice."
Dined on 4/5/2014
We had a great meal at Blue Plate
Taco. The entire staff was friendly & accommodating. There was a nice selection of drinks (both with and without alcohol). The guacamole was outstanding!!! We really enjoyed every bite of our meal!"
Dined on 3/28/2014
Great Mexican spot right on Ocean
Ave so you can dine with a view of the beautiful ocean. We had guacamole, salsa, chicken tacos and fajitas. Fun spot for a low-key date night or very small group (4-6). It is kid friendly. You can sit outside or inside and outside is heated for chilly evenings."
Dined on 3/21/2014
BP Taco was not as nice as Blue
Plate Oysterette but it was almost as good food-wise. The lobster tacos were amazing, as was their corn. Margaritas were perfect as well. The only thing that was lacking was the service. We were seated for about 5 mins before the server rushed over and asked "do you know what you want?" before telling us anything about the place. They have specials, they have a fish of the day, and they have lots of drinks so we could have started there. After going through the motions she gave us a few more minutes to look things over and when she returned we ordered several options including the fish tacos. Sadly she'd forgotten to tell us they have no fish tacos tonight. Service never recovered, but the food was good."
Dined on 3/16/2014
The most outstanding aspect of
this place is not the food - which is very good - but the location and the beautiful patio. We brought our dog along with a group of 3 adults and watched the sunset over the ocean while sipping amazing spicy margaritas. My steak tacos were just ok, but others had fish and lobster that was amazing. Chips and salsa are not free, which seems like an egregious crime for any restaurant with "taco" in the name. But I will come back next time I want to sit with my friends and my dog on that gorgeous patio and watch another sunset."
Dined on 3/15/2014
Blue Plate is a really cool
place. The food was tasty and the location - well, it just can't be beat! Before you go - make reservations... you won't have to wait and hey, its super convenient to do anyway - right!? Great spot to go and just enjoy the view! JP"

A real surprise in Santa Monica.
The salsa was the best ever. Food and service excellent. Fish tacos were perfectly prepared. Will be back on my next visit."
Dined on 3/11/2014
It's great to eat outside with the
great views that Ocean Blvd provide, but the food is simply not good. Everything is fried or smothered in saudce. I recommend going for margaritas, the view and sticking to the appetizers."
Dined on 3/10/2014
I was pretty excited to try this
spot as who wouldn't want to drink great margaritas and eat tacos looking out across the bluff at the Pacific? However, much like their Oysterette, the tacos were just good but not great. Most disappointing was the lobster taco. Though they came highly recommended by the server, I really couldn't even eat mine. The carnitas and carne asado tacos were good but not great. That said, I would return for the margaritas, chips, salsa and guacamole as they were all very tasty."
Dined on 3/8/2014
Great food, amazing margaritas.
Don't live in the area but always make sure to stop in when in town. The food here never disappoints!"
Dined on 3/2/2014
Poor management .. It's a shame
really because I thought it was a great place based on a prior experience. What kind of restaurant will tell you sorry but we ran out of 50% of the items that we have on the menu which isn't a big menu to start! My question to the manager is do I need to ask if you actually have food when I make a reservation !!"
