Diner Reviews
  • "Blue Plate is an awesome place to go when there are people in your party that are vegan and others who would like their meat. A great mix if vegan dishes and other meat options. And even a vegan dessert. Yum."

  • "The noise level was horrendous, not "energetic". We could barely hear each other at a table for four. I could hear the people behind me better but then they were sitting cramped right behind my chair. The noise level escalated as the meal progressed. As I was leaving and in the middle of the restaurant, it was worse. My ears hurt by the time I left."

  • "server was prompt with greeting us. Had the real shepherd's pie. it was just the right size for lunch. was satisfyingly warm. make a reservation or come a little before noon to get a seat. Got quite busy during the noon hour."

  • "Everyone I recommend this place to always comes back to show their friends. A great combination of live music and delicious home made style healthy food. Their pad thai is some of the best in the city, they have started offering Mexican dishes which is always fun. Great cocktails, great (local) beer and live music. Very unique brunch experience for Edmonton"

  • "I have dined at Blue Plate a number of times and absolutely love their food. I've never had a bad dish. The service is wonderful and genuine and the chef is always accommodating. The only thing that is a distraction at the Blue Plate is that it can be quite noisy. But I don't let that stop me. I'm a complete fan!"

  • "Dry mac and cheese, okay burger, greasy fries makes me wonder what the hype is about."

  • "had my 30th bday there. the noise level was high, i had prepped a speech and didnt end up sharing cause no one would hear me. the server could not hear my dad change his order from shepards pie meatloaf. the server disappeared after serving out meals did not come around to refill drinks etc. other servers helped out and brought us dessert and then the same server came back to give us our reciepts and ran away again when we had questions about same. she was not very charming personality wise either. i wood have preferrend the tall bearded gentlemen who made the table laugh."

  • "Food was good, service was just ok. The server was nice enough, but didn't tend to our table a whole lot. No one asked about how our food tasted, and the server just brought the bill out at the end of the meal without asking us if we wanted dessert, even though we did. We decided not to say anything, so that was a lost sale for the restaurant."

  • "Went for a date and had a great time, thanks to my company. Service was very friendly and can find no fault in them. Food was average... corn bread was a little dry, the mac and cheese was underwhelming, and my elk/bison burger was tasty but it had a tiny burger patty in a big bun, so half of it had no actual meat. Good ambiance, pretty romantic, and over all a nice place. But the food isn't work what it costs and I'm by no means a habitual complainer and I don't like giving non-positive reviews."

  • "Great service and amazing food! Want to go back to try everytbin on their menu. Healthier menu choices than some places as well so that's a bonus. It was very loud though to the point I couldn't hear my fiancé and had to keep on saying "what?". Other than that it was fantastic"

  • "The menu includes such items as Shepherd's Pie and Mac'n Cheese and the food is generally good; the service also. We enjoyed our evening meal with unique selections of craft brewery beers (there is a nice selection here). The restaurant's atmosphere is youthful and contemporary and very much suits the street scene in this particular area of town - older buildings mixed with new construction where the charm of the older buildings is enhanced by the renovations that have been made."

  • "I have always enjoyed the food at the Blue Plate especially the vegan selections. I had the Shepards PIe which was delicious. Often with vegan/vegetarian dishes, there is an abundance of oil used whereas this dish did not taste oily at all. Very good!"

  • "Tried the newThai green curry... so delicious! I go to blue plate often, but didn't like the menu changes earlier this year. Glad to see there have been some changes to the menu since, and the new dishes so far have been fantastic. My friend had the veggie burger and noticed that BPD removed the grilled veggies on the side. He was upset with this... please bring back the delicious veggies!"

  • "The blue plate diner has always been a favourite spot of mine for dates. It has a wonderful ambiance, friendly service, and delicious, healthy and affordable entrees."

  • "Not very often that I can go to a restaurant and find a choice for vegetarians. Thank you!"

  • "My elk / bison burger with sweet potato fries were wonderful!! One of my favorite lunch places downtown."
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "This was my first time eating here, and it was great! Food was tasty and service was good. It was quite loud though, so it was a bit tough to bave a quiet conversation as I had to almost yell for my friend to hear me. Will come back!"

  • "Yes this was the first time to this restaurant and will likely attend again. Waitress was wonderful and the food was excellent,"

  • "We had reservations for 4 people for 7 pm and our table was not ready, the table we were given was for 2, they added 2 plastic chairs which were very uncomfortable. Extremely noisey, and very crowded. The servers were inexperienced and made serveral errors, reached infront of guest to take dishes off crammed table. Quality of food was very poor, we had the black cod, the cod was so tiny, served with coconut rice, not sure where the cocounut was? Very hard dried out rice, no option for soya sauce, and bland combination of vegetables. We would not go back to this restaurant as we were extremely disappointed."

  • "A downtown comfort-food gem for years, I went for dinner for the first time in quite a while, mostly to make sure they hadn't changed their menu too much. Good news? Meatloaf, mac and cheese, green onion cakes and black olive tapenade were all as I remembered. Bad news? Service. She never asked to refresh our drinks, had to be reminded to being side plates for appetizers, dropped a dish of salsa on my pants and shoes when clearing, and never asked for our coffee or dessert order even though restaurant was closing by time we finished our mains. The overall kitsch-diner atmosphere is intact and playful, and a small outdoor patio is beckoning the brunch-goer as soon as the weather warms. Many staff have been here for years. Needs more beers!"

  • "If you're looking good ol' fashion comfort food, The Blue Plate Diner is the spot! Everything is homemade and tastes great. I had the soup of the day which was delicious and my friend had the veggie mac n cheese....a Blue Plate specialty. They also accommodate those with food senstitivites and allegeries (gluten, etc.)."

  • "Definitely one of those "hole in the wall" type places, which works well for it. Good food, good atmosphere, and all around enjoyable environment."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Food was very good, but it has been even better on other occasions. It's quite noisy but I like it; it adds to the ambiance and seems fitting for a diner."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Duck confit was deceiving, was not expecting a spring roll with duck stuffed in it... main course with the black cod was under seasoned and last dish: the desert with the banana bread pudding was missing something - vanilla ice cream or whipped cream would've improved the desert greatly. This special falls short from what blue plate diner normally provides, I won't be trying this again, but I will still stop by every so often as they change their specials."

  • "I dined here a few years ago with my brother and remember it being quite the gem of a place. I was less than pleased with the food this time. It's too bad to see a favourite restaurant of mine go downhill."

  • "Very nice food in an down-home retro style with an authentic feel - a bit too loud for a business lunch if you want to discuss anything other than non-work topics. Going on my fav list."

  • "I went to this restaurant with a neighbor friend before a hockey game as it is close to the subway station. On a Sunday the restaurant has decent hours and this is one of the reasons I went there. The service was good and the pasta I had was excellent. They also have a very good selection of beers."

  • "Waiter was 8 minutes before acknowledging our presence/greeting us, even though he walked past our table on 3 occassions. No apology. Food was returned as it was served luke warm at best. Again, no apology. Dampened the experience and would not recommend. (Hamburger was quite good, meatloaf was mediocre and the mac & cheese was served cold. )"

  • "I enjoyed the dinner, they had some gluten free options which was nice. The place was a nice small place but I didn't feel like we were crammed in. It was a little dark but over really nice."

  • "Took 20 minutes to get drinks and even longer for food. Waitress never came by to see how we were doing and forgot our appetizer. The redeeming quality here is the food. Great food! But it came to us cold."

  • "As our son lives on 104 Street, we have met here many times for our enforced family bonding time. I have also introduced pguests to ouyr fair city to this place and they always enjoy. Great relaxed atmosphere, good home cooking, central location and attentive staff combine to make this place a comfortable dining experience. Whether you decide to pop in for a quick bite, appies and a beverage after work, a family meal or a business lunch, food and service is always consistent. Ambience is 1960's diner and it can get a bit noisy, but never overwhelming. We will be back."

  • "We really like the decor of this place. It has a really cool vibe. The food however, is average. I had a paninni style sandwich and it was OK. The hummus starter was pretty good though. My friend had the burger which wasn't bad, with fries."

  • "The food and the service here is always so great. It's like the best comfort food with a kick! Always friendly staff, and the funky atmosphere welcoming and friendly. Always a great place to go!"

  • "A friend and I had heard of the Blue Plate and wanted to try it out. We were disappointed with run down decor and over priced food. The restaurant was quiet and great for chatting and catching up, probably because it was pretty dead for a Friday night."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Service was prompt and courteous, the food however was just ok, nothing spectacular or memorable. Overall it was a pleasant dining experience but not a restaurant that I be dying to go back to anytime soon."

  • "I loved the ambience! One of the conversations at my table side was about the different lamps at each table. This was definitely a sign of how eclectic the Blue Plate Diner was. Loved the food and great wine pairings as well. Staff were very nice. I would recommend this stop to anyone"

  • "Great service and tasty, unique menu options. Some really good vegetarian/vegan choices as well. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "A group of eight of us had dinner at the Blue Plate on Sunday evening, Family Day weekend. The food was very tasty with a homey touch, prices were reasonable, and the decor/ambience was fairly casual but very nice. The only problem for us was the noise level. When we were there the place was full. The tables are pretty close together and the noise level was high. This is fine if you are looking for an "energetic" environment, but not so great for quieter conversations - something to consider if there are seniors or people with hearing issues in your party. Overall though, I would recommend eating here."

  • "BPD is one of my favourite places in Edmonton. I've been going there since the very beginning and it still feels like home. When you're sitting near a window it is reminiscent of particular streets in England with its view of old brick buildings (yes I realize its a new brick building) and the unique charm of the fourth street promenade. Albiet, I was disappointed with the new menu but some changes have been made and certain new items are getting better. Tried the vegetarian spring rolls and Thai curry dish, they were excellent!"
