Diner Reviews
  • "The food was fantastic and the service was good. I would definatley go back again."

  • "Service was great. Glad it wasn't very busy, the acoustics are loud! Food was tasty enough, not amazing, but good."

  • "When a meat eater and a vegan get married it's not easy finding a restaurant that meets both our needs. The Blue Plate dinner has great choices for both. I had a wonderful Apple Pork Chop and my sweetie had the vegan loaf. Top it off with a big slice of moist chocolate cake and it makes for a wonderful evening. Intimate seating with a bit eclectic ambiance adds to the fun. Highly recommended."

  • "The service was great, but my friend's glass had smears of lipstick stains when she received it from the waiter. This made me concerned about the restaurant's overall cleanliness."

  • "Tried the Blue Plate Diner Sunday for supper with my sister. We started the evening with the Blue Plate Diners Strawberry Lemonade which we both found to be flat, tasteless and warm. I tried the grilled Corn bread which tasted like it was grilled on a bed of burnt onions. For the main courses, I had the Pork Chop with oven roasted potatoes and vegetables while my sister had the Mac and Cheese with a side order of chicken. The pork chop and roasted potatoes were over cooked and dry but it was hot. My Sisters Mac and Cheese was cold, oily and had a gritty texture and lacking any form of sauce. She did say that the grilled chicken was hot and had a good taste. To the restaurant's credit they did give us a discount on our bill."

  • "I am officially super mom. Kids loved it. Mac and cheese killed it. Omg so good. Perfect evening."

  • "Always good food and good prices. They offer healthy choices as well as sinful selections."

  • "We have been to Blue Plate many times over the years, but sadly we will not go back. The food was burned, not tasty and over priced. The waitress was unfriendly and wore such strong perfume we couldn't enjoy our meal."

  • "Greate for both vegans and meat eaters. Excellent food."

  • "The blue plate diner was not at all what I expected. The food was microwaved..super soggy fries and the food just looked limp and unappetizing. Even the salads looked pre made hours before and were wilted. Staff made excuses and were unapologetic and rude. Will definitely avoid at all costs."

  • "Blue Plate Diner provides exceptional service and quality food in a timely manner in a busy, bustling downtown core. The environment is noisy, but cozy; relaxed, but energetic; home-like, but rustic and fancy. All round a great experience."

  • "Bacon Mac n Cheese Spring Rolls- Says it all. Those make me want to go back more than anything else. We went there right at lunch and it got a bit noisy. It was not a work day for us so we had a couple watermelon mojitos also. They were great but a bit pricey at $10 each but a wonderful way to start the afternoon. Waitress was very nice but I suggest not asking her about Justin Bieber. Her eyes rolling back and the look on her face made it seem to me that she had to answer that question too many times. Still I could not help myself and had to ask. Sweet potato fries could have been a bit more crispy but the steak was fantastic with the red onion jam."

  • "Good food, good service, awesome atmosphere, really small menu"

  • "Ok lunch. Not up to the expectations set by other reviews. Our server could wear more clothes... :-) "

  • "Waitress was rude, no friendly smile at all, you don't feel welcome when siting down to look at the menu. Food was no better than eating at Humpty or Denny. Shepard pie had no taste, Pan seared glazed maple salmon, you can't even taste and maple on the salmon, it was just in the sauce at the bottom of the plate. All in all I would not come here again."

  • "Had the "beer can chicken" which was very good, followed by the chocolate mouse made with coconut milk and tofu - also very good!"

  • "The Blue Plate Diner was a good experience due to the ambience and service! The food was not up to par! We were there on a busy Friday evening and the energy in the diner was electric and fun. Our food was dry and underwelming! Too bad...........I'm not sure I could recommend the diner to a friend."

  • "The Blue Plate has been serving locally sourced comfort food since I moved to Edmonton many years ago. It's got a reasonable menu with good quality items. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly, with high quality meats for the carnivores. It gets busy, especially at lunch and on weekend, so make sure to get a reservation or expect to wait. They also feature a rotating array of local art on the walls. Sometimes it's a miss, bit often they've got something interesting to see."

  • "Took my boyfriend to the Blue Plate Diner for a birthday (pre-show) dinner on a Thursday evening. The food was good, a decent number of dinner selections and service was decent. All in all we enjoyed our dining experience."

  • "Great food at a really cool spot. Will be back and will reccomend to friends. "

  • "My sandwich was awesome, my fries were cold, all in all it was okay. Took a while for the waiter to come by with the debit machine."

  • "I have celiac Disease. I checked the online menu before booking & noted the GF choices. The waitress drew a blank on GF when I arrived & the menu only showed VG. The VG Shepard's Pie was 98% mashed potatoes with the odd bean or carrot floating by in a soupy mix. The House Salad was wilted lettuce with a few chickpeas tossed on top with a glop of 'surprise' dressing. No art to presentation. We had to ask for sweeter for our coffee/tea. The table still had the Easter Bruch menu taped to it (2 weeks post). The open brick was attractive, but the acoustics where dreadful. I don't like to shout in a restaurant. Was accosted both arriving & departing by some frankly scary street people. Never again."

  • "I was looking for a restaurant that both my husband and I could enjoy; we found it at the Blue Plate. Original modifications on home cooking. Fantastic service, attentive but not hovering and knowledgeable staff. Above average portions with decent price point. Will definitely return with family and friends."

  • "We were late in deciding where to go & found the Blue Plate Diner at the perfect time for us. For my guest this was his first time eating here. The food was excellent as he was hoping for a hardy but delicious meal. Excellent service all around. I would recommend it anytime. "

  • "Food was decent and came out quickly. Hit and miss on quality depending on the menu item. The service was a little too casual and slow for my liking. Decor is odd and bathrooms were in need of serious repair. "

  • "I had fun with my dining companion. She sure talks a lot."

  • "We went for my sisters birthday and were all first timers, but will definitely be repeat customers! Food and service was fabulous, a must try when in downtown Edmonton!!!"

  • "Concrete walls made for loud, echoing conversation. Not the greatest environment for a meal to chat and visit. A little pricey for the amount of food served. "

  • "Wow... Is all I can say about the food - delicious! Makes you feel all warm and cozy inside. Simple, delicious whole food. Service was a little slow, and lemonade refills are not free... But the lemonade might just be worth paying for... It's pretty good. Overall, fun place with great food. "

  • "We went to Blue Plate for my sister's birthday dinner. We brought my 2 year old nephew along, he is so squirmy and active but the waitress was understanding and so kind. Our food was amazing, the portion size was just right so that we didn't feel stuffed. We had a really great time! "

  • "I have been a fan of the Blue Plate Diner for years, but this trip was the exception. The food has changed and not for the better, the portions are smaller and the prices are higher, and after complaining about a desert nothing was done about it. It breaks my heart, but I won't be going back for a while. :("

  • "104th street handy, but the menu is a bit odd... not really sure what I would go back for? Bland, basic, boring."
    Dined on 5/5/2014
  • "I would not return to this restaurant because of the following reasons: 1. appetizer -we ordered the flat bread with the olive tampenade and hummus - the flat bread was stale and the tampenade was very very salty, the humus was good texture but flavourless. 2. ordered the 1/2 chicken to share - the chicken was good but the vegetables were overdone and wet and tasteless, the roast potatoes were okay but also very very salty. 3. the waiter was pleasant and attentive but his apron was stained and that put us off right from the beginning on the dining experience. 4. the cutlery was old and I like better quality cutlery.. 5. the lemonade was delicious - yum 6. I most likely wont return for dinners but possibly try the breakfast menu."

  • "We were all first timers here. All 6 of us were happy! Veggie burger, steak, mac and cheese, caesar salad, bison burger were all good. We loved the sweet potato fries! Most were so full they had no room for dessert, so good portion sizes."

  • "I love Blue Plate Diner. Friendly staff, exceptional food, and it's never been too loud. I never hesitate to bring people there, whether it's a co-worker, friend, or romantic interest."

  • "Went for lunch and found the menu was rather limited. Had the salad with prawns. I had been here years ago for brunch and really enjoyed it. I think the menu needs a little updating."

  • "Still one of my favourite unpretentious places in town. Good, simple food with excellent service. I will continue to go to the Blue Plate Diner again and again..."

  • "Twice now i have had issues with the food at the BPD. I am very disappointed because BPD is one of my favourite Edmonton eateries and I am not sure what has happened to change this in the last few months. My green onion cakes were undercooked and dough-y and then the tofu in my meal had definately gone bad. The server was very good and did have the chef's try the tofu and agreed to refund our meals. Before he did this, I was almost ready to not come back again. The quality of the food has changed, and I am hoping this will turn itself around. I will probably give them another try..."

  • "As always, the Blue Plate is tried and true - we had meat eaters and vegans in our party, and all were satisfied, although I was disappointed to find that they were not offering their Tofu Scramble that day. It was a minor inconvenience and a good time was had by all. "
