A word from Blue Plate
The Blue Plate opened in 1999 as a casual spot where friends and neighbors can enjoy the best ingredients our seasons have to offer. Owners Cory Obenour and Jeff Trenam have created a space that feels like a home, with three distinct dining rooms each appointed with the work of local artists. In the back, a lush, night-fragrant garden offers an exotic retreat from the bustle of the city. The kitchen stays committed to using the highest quality local produce and meats in classic American and rustic Mediterranean dishes. Through a working friendship with Bay Area farmers, the Blue Plate is expanding the notion of "the blue plate special" to include dining that is casual, affordable, delicious and responsible.Continued

Overly sauced, too creamy and not the nuanced flavors we were used to. Sadly disappointing as it was always dependable. Other friends complained of the same experience. Why the changes?   • "Each time we go to Blue Plate we walk away loving it more than we did before. The food was excellent - love the deviled eggs and the key lime pie is the best we have ever had. Our reservation was on the early side so there noise level was low but got much louder once the room was full at the end of our meal. It was also a fairly quick meal, which was fine with us, and we also contributed to it being early in the evening so the kitchen was quicker than is normal during the weekend."

  • "Everything I had was drown in cream without any other interesting flavors to cut the richness. Cream sauce with potato chips on ravioli? Rich on rich without anything else in there but salt. I couldn't eat more than a few bites, especially after butternut squash soup to start which was, you guessed it, all cream. I couldn't even taste the squash."

  • "I've been going to Blue Plate ever since it opened. When some friends were coming to the city for an afternoon show, one of them put me in charge of making a dinner reservation for our party of 8. I chose my favorite restaurant in the universe. When I stopped in to confirm a few days before, having learned our party had shrunk to 7, I had the wild idea of taking over the counter vs sitting at a regular table, but only if it worked for the proprietors. Lucky us, we got to sit at the counter and watch the show. We all shared deviled eggs, mussels, mac n cheese, beet salad, kale salad, risotto, crab ravioli... I've lost track. Everything was fabulous. I'll have to come back when it really IS my birthday!"

  • "It was my first time there. Was crowded and an rsvp was needed, for sure. Small space, but they do their best with it. You will have people sitting right next to you. Food is priced a tad high, honestly. But it is delicious and someone is cooking it for you, so it's okay I guess to pay about 30 bucks a plate. Food is stick to your ribs fare."

Excellent Yelp reviews precipitated our reservation there for a Saturday evening, and my girlfriend and I were delighted by Blue Plate's service, food and ambience. It's true that the tables for 2 are extremely close together but we didn't mind because it was obvious that our fellow diners were rightfully absorbed by their own meals and conversations. I highly recommend Blue Plate."

For 2, $38 red and $8 chocolate cake small scoop of good ice cream, $140. Ok you decide. Arty expensive. Some good flavors. Second time, maybe one more... Great staff on the floor. Clean washrooms."

  • "Blue Plate is definitely a gem. I've been here for brunch and dinner, and both menus are creatively designed to be unusually delicious combinations of foods you thought you knew by heart. Warning: main courses are intense - delicious, yes, but also heavy. This is not a joint for someone counting their calories. Setting is intimate and beautiful - the restaurant takes up the full first floor of a historic Victorian. Back dining room overlooks a garden. Service impeccable."

  • "If you can find parking go to Blue Plate for a menu ranging from meat loaf to risotto and diverse small plates. The sardine bruschetta was one of many standout small plates for us and we were pleased with all of our entrees. The service is attentive and prompt. Tables are a little close together but it's in a renovated home so I think they have done the best they can with the different rooms they have. Definitely a place to go to for what many call comfort food with a touch of sophistication."

This is Great place for a small group...they honored our reservation to the minute...Waitress was very attentive and helpful with suggestions. Enjoyed the sardine bruchetta and mussels(with exquisite seasoning including an exotic mint) small plates then went on to delicious shortribs, pork chops and rissoto. No one was hungry."

  • "I have lived in the neighborhood for a few years and had no idea how good this place is. In the sea of foodie restaurants in SF, this one really caught me off guard and knocked me out. It hit that sweet spot of not too refined, not too caveman, not gluttonously hearty, and not avant-garde and sparse. The decor was nice and comfortable. The wine list had hits and misses, but the more I get familiar with it, I'm sure my finds will be spectacular."

  • "incredibly rich but tasty food. we couldn't finish everything but it was all terrific. lots of oil and butter for sure. beautiful presentations. the chef garde manger is so sweet and the youngish guy running the kitchen (sous?) was also really nice to talk to. the chef himself seemed mostly preoccupied with chatting to his regulars but that's ok, we didn't need him. i would definitely take people here. you get large portions at decent prices for this level of food."

  • "This place is around the block from our condo and while we hadn't been thoroughly impressed the first time, neighbors raved about it so we decided to try again. Things were better this time, though I found the menu to be a bit heavy in general and offering little for those of us without manly carnivorous appetites. I ended up ordering the cheese dumplings, which were surprisingly delicious and I was most impressed with the quince jous they swam in. Others ordered fried chicken and steaks, seemed happy enough but not quite as impressed (particularly the southerner in the group). Overall, Blue Plate is decent with an occasional hit but has yet to live up to the hype for me..."
