A word from Blue Ginger
Blue Ginger, located in Wellesley, is Ming Tsai's award-winning flagship restaurant. This feng-shui inspired space offers three distinct dining options. There's the informal Lounge serving Asian tapas in a more casual setting. No reservations are required in the Lounge. The main dining room features an open kitchen for you to experience mastery at work. The menu features Ming's signature East-West cuisine, including his famous Miso-Sake Marinated Sablefish and Black Pepper Lobster. And lastly, there are three private dining rooms for larger groups or functions wanting to be enjoyed away from the crowd.

"Blue Ginger is unusual, not only because of the food or the room, but because it's a neighborhood restaurant of a type not found too often in the Boston area...those of us who live farther away will just have to travel now that the secret is out." --The Boston Globe

We had a 1:30 reservation and thought it would be crowded since it was restaurant week - but very few people were there. We had met family whom we hadn't seen in a long while - so were in no rush. However, apparently they stopped serving lunch a short time after we were served I guess as we were the only people in the restaurant and we felt we needed to leave rather abruptly. The waiter wasn't especially nice.

The cocktails are spot on, as is the food. Good service... not outstanding, but solid. Tables are a bit too close together. The food is really spectacular, though.

We had been told for a long time that we just HAD to go to Blue Ginger. When we got there, the restaurant was maybe 2/3 full. We were led to the only empty table in the restaurant that was not set. Oops. Once seated we could not find the restaurant week specials. It turns out that it was a separate menu that you had to ask for. What to say about the food? The objection that many Asians haven against fusion is that it is just not very good Asian food. Blue Ginger meets the stereotype. The one feature that stands out is the overuse of soya and other sauces. It's reductive of the western impression of Asian food.

I went for restaurant week. The noodle dish was good, but the chicken, although tender, was not very interesting. I had better food last year, but the restaurant may have been affected by a "boil water" dictate that went out earlier in the week.

  • Disappointing taste

The restaurant is by famous chef/owner Ms. Ming Tsai and very popular in the neighborhood. As an Asian, i must say the menu is very imaginative but the taste is too heavy to today's standard of health watch. The chicken breast i ordered is very tender but unfortunately the ginger and soybean sauce is much too heavy. Today, not even in China you will ever taste so salty food. Not much to choose from the menu is another problem. The drinking menu is about 10 times more, maybe that's what you need to go with the salty food. It's an open kitchen so ventilation is poor and you can smell smoke all the time.

The food was good but the noise so pervasive it was hard to hear not only the server but my husband sitting across from me. It was a normal night- not even full but this just was the nature of the place. This high noise level trumped everything.

My best friend and I went to Blue Ginger for Restaurant Week. With our luck of course Wellesley was under a boil water order so Blue Ginger had to use plastic utensils and paper plates which was a little silly, especially when they brought our expensive wine out in plastic glasses haha. However the food far surpassed the silliness of the situation and they made due with what they could do safely without working water to do dishes properly. After trying it out with Restaurant Week, we definitely want to go back for a super fancy night out!

We ate lunch at Blue Ginger last March for DineOut Boston and again last week. Each time we ate there, everything we ate was either very good or superlative, the service was attentive, and the ambiance was elegant. The food is Asian-inspired, not strictly Asian, so it has interesting and unexpected flavors and is lighter and healthier rather than very rich and heavy. We share everything, and the serving sizes are reasonable so even with half a serving we did not feel deprived. We would consider going there for a special occasion and would recommend it to anyone. Pork satay appetizers were undercooked. Fish in the fish taco didn't taste particularly like fish--overwhelmed by the taste of the sauce. Very good service, pleasant ambiance, but from what we had, the restaurant doesn't seem to have retained the level of quality it had in its first few years. (I'll never forget the lobster risotto they had a few years back!) I wonder how involved in the menu Ming Tsai is now.

Went for Restaurant Week (now called Dine Out Boston), and was a bit disappointed. The service was slow (waited at least 10 minutes for a server, who ended up being very strange), the food was good but not outstanding, and this time, I felt like it was very overpriced. I raved about Blue Ginger a few years ago, but this time, not so much. There are too many other places with food just as good and much cheaper. I probably won't be returning.

Blue Ginger is consistently delicious, but we went during Dine Out Boston (formerly restaurant week) so the menu options were different because we decided to choose from the special menu. I normally love their thin crackers, but they only offered bread because they had to prepare two different menus. We both had the peach salad to start. It was refreshing, but we had to ask for more peaches. The salmon entree was outstanding! It came with an eggplant purée and a few other amazing favors! The dessert we chose was the panna cotta with black sesame sees. We loved it!

Always great to celebrate a special occasion at Blue Ginger in Wellsley. The presentation of the food is beautiful. But the tastes are what keep bringing us back. This time it was the Korean flat iron steak. So many different tastes that blended together so well. And the best Mojito I've ever tasted. Great mint taste without over sweetening. Service was attentive almost to the point of being too much. We liked the attention of the exceptional waitress but were overwhelmed with all the other staff showing up at the table. Could back off a bit on that. Decor is nice but busy with lots of noise and closeness to other parties. Not a quiet, intimate setting. The food is the main show here. Exceptional!

I have been to Blue Ginger several times but this time I was somewhat disappointed. The service and the waitstaff were excellent, but the food was not up to par. I may go back again but I am in no hurry to. I must say that the Korean beef I ordered was very spicy and when I mentioned it to the waitress she offered to get my another one. The second one was much better.

Had a very nice meal all around. Tuna poke was a little different than other places - crispy rice cake added welcome texture and contrast. Butterfish was good; more of a mild fish than I usually choose, but nicely done and had very good accompaniment. "Strawberry shortcake" dessert was a pleasant surprise; love the hints of ginger and mint. Wine list spans a nice range with quality and broad selection. Best part was our server, David. We were near a group that was a little loud and he quickly and unobtrusively reseated us and was right on top of service all meal. The entire staff seemed to be pleasant, professional, efficient - no drama, great service. Thank you all for a very nice night.

I haven't eaten at Blue Ginger in a few years, and the food was not as good as I had remembered. The butterfish, which I remember swooning over, was just ordinary this time, nothing special at all, and for $41 I was very disappointed. My companion's beef dish was good enough, but overall, not worth the price and not deserving of all the praise it gets.

We've been going to Blue Ginger for several years and are sort of done with it at this point. The menu seems to rarely change and the signature dishes aren't as good as they used to be while also costing significantly more than they once did. Once upon a time this was a great place to have a special dinner for a small splurge. Now there's no value left to be had and, in my opinion, is overpriced for what it is.

My husband and I drove 8 hrs from Canada to eat here! It was so worth it. We had such a wonderful dinner on Friday that we came back the next day to also try their Tapas. Both areas had exceptional food and service. We enjoyed everything we ordered. To start we had calamari, soft-shell crab and shiitake-leek springrolls. All were delicious and their individual sauces were sooo tasty! Our entrees were also very good. We ordered the sablefish and lobster and they were so fresh and juicy it literally melted in our mouth. We couldn't be happier with the service. From the moment we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted with welcoming smiles and constant attention to our dining needs. This place deserves a Michelin star!

Had a wonderful time for a birthday celebration. Overall good service, excellent entrees (lobster), salad, house made beverages. Desserts (strawberries with marscapone) was so-so but not great for $12, and the key lime cheesecake had good flavor but unpleasant construction. It was a essentially a warm mousse. Our server was very kind about our dislike of it and had it taken off the bill. Overall, a lovely place, very expensive for two if you intend to have full courses.

Our second visit to Blue Ginger and again, Mr Tsai and staff did it right. Last time here I had the fried chicken, but this time I again had a dilemma: pork or lamb or steak. All three sounded delicious and after asking my waiter he sold me on my choice, my wife was sold on the pork I decided to go for the flat iron steak. Delicious does not begin to describe this dish. It awakened taste buds and the spicy and sweet mix was just right. This is not just another steak , it is steak nirvana! And to top it all off I had the strawberry and cream dessert which is not just that, it is a dessert which cools the palate and makes you dream of your next adventure here. Again, kudos to you Mr. Tsai and your staff!

I recently dined at the Blue Ginger for a special occasion and had not been there for awhile. While the food was excellent there was something slightly off on that night. The waiters although pleasant seemed tired and inattentive to some degree. I had to ask for more water and was never asked if I wanted a 2nd coffee. It was a Thursday night and it was not very busy. I really hate to spend half of my time trying to get a waiter's attention it put a damper on the night I could never really relax.
