The menu notes every farm where the main ingredient for the dish was raised before its journey to the table. Dishes are genuine, time-honored and traditional -- slow roasting in wood embers, braising, preserving and smoking techniques bring the true flavors of America's great, simple and wholesome foods to the Blue Duck Tavern.

The restaurant has an elegant residential feel through the open staff pantry and kitchen, wood-burning oven and the showpiece Molteni range.

Diner Reviews
  • "I was very excited to finally go to Blue Duck Tavern and was really disappointed. The flavors were not especially innovative or unique. Everything had was generally fine and the service was pretty good. But not what I would expect for a $100 lunch."

  • "The service was superb and the food was AMAZING (the kind of amazing your long for and rarely have) Suggestions for your dining pleasure: Pomegranite Foam (mildly fruity, scented and tasty cocktail), Bone Marrow for starters (WOW), Anything in the Red Meat category or the Crab Cakes are going to be a big hit, and the apple pie and Guiness ice cream/bar food surprise (were the Best desserts). Pricey. So make it a special occasion. You won't be sorry; you'll be planning on going back for more."

  • "I had been trying to get reservationas at Blue Duck for the past 9 months and finally was able to find one. The place met all of my expectations and more. We will definitely go back."

  • "One of our twin sons lives near the Blueduck so, from what he had heard, he figured it was a great place to have his parents take him and his brother for their 20th birthday. We were not disappointed. The food was exquisite, and the service was very attentive and personal. We had a quiet table, which was good because we could have quality time with the family, yet disappointing because we could see that there was great people-watching out on the terrace!"

  • "We ate at the Blue Duck Tavern recently for our anniversary and it was definitely a special expereince. The food was outstanding and it was quite a fancy restuarant overall. One downside was the slow service. It look them a while to put in our food order, and then took them a while to bring our entrees out. I will forgive them for taking a while to make the food, however, becuase it was delicious and worth the wait! Another thing was the waiter got confused and brought out a wrong, more expensive bottle of wine with a similar name. Anyone with a knowlege of French wine knows the difference between fume and fuisse, so this was a bit odd. Otherwise it was an extraordinary evening."

  • "I try new restaurants every week, but occasionally I run into a restaurant that I include in my rotation more than others. This is one of them. I went for Sunday brunch and our food and service was amazing."

  • "The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the staff is very helpful. I ordered the nutella waffles and they were good, but nothing spectacular. The price was high for just waffles. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict and again the it was good, but nothing extraordinary especially for the price. Overall, we had a good experience though."

  • "The food is great, that of a high end restaurant, however the service is definitely lacking. We walked in, the hostess had her back to us and I had to awkwardly get her attention so we could be seated. Our table wasn't ready yet so we sat in the lounge area where I sat for what I feel was too long before the waitress acknowledged me. Our waitress as very uncomfortable and awkward, she didn't have the swagger of a waitress I would expect at a restaurant like this. When our table was ready the hostess came over and got us, walked away so we were like uhhh are we supposed to find our table alone? Then she came back and sat us. Our food waiter was fine. Nothing special about him."

  • "We won this in a drawing held by my realtor and I selected the restaurant from a group of 4 because I had not heard of it. We truly enjoyed our meal - even if it took MANY weeks to get a reservation. The food was excellent and the service was superior. I had a swordfish special and my fiance had oven fired wagyu beef. both were excellent! Even the sorbet seemed a cut above. Fortunately, we didn't spend all of the gift card so we get to go back again! It was a bit noisier than I expected."

  • "My wife and I chose Blue Duck to celebrate a special occasion last week. Our entrees - a roasted muscovy duck breast & confit and a Bouillabaisse -- were spectacular: oozing with flavor and perfectly cooked. The side of roasted mushrooms was equally wonderful. Our dessert, a red fruit profiterole, was also excellent. Unfortunately, the service though attentive, detracted from our experience. Our server's strong accent made his descriptions nearly unintelligible, especially given the noise level. At the end of the night, the sommelier explained that they were out of the Moscato d'Asti, then goofed up the replacement. The server also dropped the check abruptly, before we had finished dessert. Nothing fatal, but below expectations."

  • "I'll start by saying that it was our server, Timothy, that really made this dinner special. He was knowledgeable, clearly passionate about food, and gave us just the right about attention. In terms of food the two dishes we liked best was the bone marrow and the fois gras. The bone marrow was just a treat to have. The seasoning, the soft marrow, and roasted garlic just came together so well. The fois gras was rich full of flavor and paired so well the Sauternes Timothy recommend. Other dishes enjoyed were the suckling pig, fried green tomatoes, and asparagus. For dessert, we selected the lemon ice box cake which was a refreshing way to end the meal. We also order some sugar cookies with ice cream--which I highly recommend."

  • "The food is a great selection of farm raised and local seafood paired with nice vegetable dishes. They have a great wine list, including some local Virginia wines."

  • "We ate brunch here. Fantastic service from Shiva, a professional and kind server. An asset to the company. The menu has a great and original selection, with many of the items being of artisan nature, house made jams, freshly baked apple pie and pastries, sorbet mimosas. Well appointed restaurant with plenty of space and modern features. Will recommend. Not cheap, but worth every dollar for the quality you get."

  • "We went to BDT because my daughter wanted to try the famous french fries. We were seated by the "prep table" inside for a late Saturday lunch. I think it looked nicer outside on the patio but we were not offered that as an option. The sticky bun was excellent. The fries are thick and ok. The main dishes were average. The farro re-heated better the next day. For $16 one crab cake alone on the small plate seems pricey. Despite the constant visits by the waiter he never took away my original drink glass and never asked if any of us wanted a second drink. The lack of attention to those details was surprising for a "well reviewed" place that is not inexpensive. I would save my money and time and go to any number of other great places in DC."

  • "The bartender made a fabulous old fashioned. All the food we had was amazing; crab cakes, duck, short ribs, mushrooms, fries, and apple pie. Server either didn't speak English very well or didn't know how to interact with her guests. Could have been better service for the price. Pretty expensive place if you have any cocktails."

  • "My parents were nice enough to take me here for my 45th birthday, and they are in their 70s, so even though the food and wine were outstanding, I was really surprised by how loud it was. The acoustics, with all the wood walls and floors, glass elements, windows, etc -- are terrible. Nothing soft to absorb sound. There weren't even that many people in the restaurant and they were all talking normally, but the hard surfaces everywhere amplified the sound to the point where it was very difficult for us all the hear each other. We couldn't even hear our waiter! Sadly I'll remember the sound and echoes more than the food."

  • "We had a lovely meal to celebrate a special occasion. The service was top notch, and the crab cake was the best I've ever had. Wonderful spot for a celebration or romantic evening."

  • "overall the experience was good. There are many good things about this restaurant, good view, quiet dinning environment. Food could be better, loved the charcuterie board and the duck. roasted wild mushroom a little over salty and charred. Service is good, but when the waiter set entree plat for me, he had the knife pointing directly at me closely, he should avoid doing that. He also seemed not very patient when we had questions which dessert to pick. I don't like lemon so I asked how strong the flavor is in one of the lemon cake, he said "if you don't like lemon, just get the red fruit ... '"

  • "We enjoyed Blue Duck Tavern. The food was great, the service was great initially then not so much, the atmosphere on the outdoor patio was lovely. The host staff are young and arrogant, and set a tone. Our waiter initially was fantastic! Then we got moved to another waiter, who was okay, but ended up not handling us well, and our previous waiter would step in when he saw us sitting there. The food makes up for everything. I had the bouillabaisse and my husband had the pork chop. We both started with the wedge salad. Great food. If we had been able to keep our original waiter, I would have given service 5 stars even with the arrogant attitude host group."

  • "I've been meaning to try the Blue Duck Tavern for some time and finally had the chance to go there this weekend. We were a group of ten and went prior to a show at the Kennedy Center. Not only was the food thoroughly outstanding but so was the service! Everyone raved about their dishes. I tried the roasted chicken which had to be the best I ever had! I even gave a taste to two other people in our group so they could see I wasn't kidding! The creamy grits and gravy were also a winner as a side dish. We liked it so much we came back after the show! I plan on returning soon!"

  • "Blue Duck is my favorite restaurant. The food is excellent, and the decor is beautiful. I have had private parties there, taken family for birthdays there, and enjoyed quiet, relaxing evenings there with my husband. I've never had a bad experience, until last Friday. The staff neglected to bring 1 item with every order - when they served drinks, they were missing a glass of wine; when they brought the ice for a martini, it was the wrong kind of ice; when entrees were served, they were missing an entree. We had to ask for all of that, no one noticed the missing items. Service was slow."

  • "My mom and I went to DC to look at a prospective grad school and I knew nothing of the town, so I chose Blue Duck Tavern based on internet reviews. They were not wrong. Loved the open kitchen and being able to watch everything be prepared. We had a later reservation and were seated very close to the kitchen, so the chef actually came out, talked with us, and brought us extra plates! Our waiter was also lovely and attentive, and even helped me out with my grad school decision! It's not an everyday kind of place and the à la carte style makes the dishes a little pricey, but it's amazing for a special occasion. We ordered the crab cake, foie gras, roasted wild mushrooms, and wedge salad, and were given two of the specials, including halibut!"

  • "I lunched at Blue Duck Tavern for the first time this week. The service was attentive which I really appreciated since I have a broken ankle and am on crutches. Server was very knowledgeable and helpful. Food was excellent. I had a cold corn soup that was spectacular, and the crab cake starter. The small salad the garnished the crab cake provided just the right texture contrast. The dressing was lemony with capers, which was a great accent for the crab. My companion had a wonderful carrot salad and the tuna. My only complaint was that it was really noisy in our part of the dining room - the front - so it made it a bit hard for a conversation. I loved it and would definitely go back for dinner. Ambiance other than the noise was fine."

  • "We've eaten here several times, always for special occasions and it gets better with each visit. The new chef has retained the same high standards and added his own touch. The wait staff is personable, friendly, thorough and knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back! Don't forget the apple pie for dessert-- big enough for 4 to share."

  • "Our sole purpose for visiting was to try the FF on the top 15 list from People. We were seated outside next to the fountain which was nice and the service was great. We had a reservation at 1230 but showed up at 1130 and were seated with no problem. The ff were the TripleCut fries which were not that good, the fries I got with my sandwich were better. They didn't serve sweet tea and gave my wife some awful tasting sweetener so if you like sweet tea don't expect it. It is pricey,a meal for 2 adults and our child was $98 which included the $4.50 sweet tea for my wife and child and a $4.50 12 oz coke."

  • "Celebrated my husband's birthday here. We thoroughly enjoyed our food (duck, bison, apple pie, fried green tomatoes, grits, wedge salad) and our seat in front of the kitchen. They even decorated the dessert plate with a birthday message. This isn't some place I would go on a regular basis, but definitely great for special occasions."

  • "BDT never disappoints. I've been there for several meals for brunch, lunch and dinner and the dishes are always impeccable and very tasty! It is our favorite place to go for special occasions. I love BDT!"

  • "Waiter knew menu well and made good recommendations -- had to be reminded to bring Bloody Mary and forgot to add BDT Fries to our order so they arrived long after our entrees. Food was superb, service not so much. Even though we were not charged for fries it made our experience a little less special. Our waiter was distracted; it was a busy Saturday brunch, but we expected better at a highly rated restaurant like the Blue Duck Tavern."

  • "This restaurant has well-prepared local seafood, meat, and vegetables, in a comfortable, pleasant ambiance. Drinks and food are pricey, but deservingly so, because all ingredients are high in quality and prepared expertly. We visited the restaurant for dinner, but we also stayed in the hotel and enjoyed room service from the restaurant - delicious breakfasts and late night treats that are unlike any we've experienced before. If you are a foodie, you do not want to miss out on the Blue Duck."

  • "We had been trying to book a table here for ages, so expectations were high. We arrived on time for our reservation, and were slightly disappointed we could not be seated outside. The dining room is lovely, but very cold. The main problem was the service. It was 8:45 & still quite busy, but not packed. We waited quite a while for our waiter - more than 5 minutes. We had been given menus, but no wine list. When the waiter finally arrived, he began to tell us about the specials. I actually interrupted him to ask for a wine list. It took several minutes & then he was not overly knowledgeable about the wine. Once he brought a bottle, a full 20 minutes after arriving, I still did not have a wine glass. We requested bread, never came, etc."
