Diner Reviews
  • "If you are looking for a night out that offers a great menu, service & music/dance venue; this is it for locals & visitors feel "at home". "

  • "Live music and dancing 5 nights a week. Wednesday & Thursday nights are usually Hawaiian music (of the highest quality and much of it danceable). Friday & Saturday is a rocking dance scene (groups vary). Sunday is specialty stuff that is always changing. Last week was Tango the week before a 12 piece old school dance band (lots of wind instruments). The ambiance is 1950-60's Los Angles night club. Open air and coconut trees above and a very friendly atmosphere where people tend to mingle and meet or meet up with friends on the dance floor. There is a nice outside seating area away from the music and dancers for quiet dinners and dinner parties."

  • "Blue Dragon has some of the best local musicians, great food, friendly, courteous service - considered by many to be the most happening place on the West side of the island. Food is fabulous, great beverage selections, and the ambiance is the best! The very attentive staff works hard at making sure you're comfortable and you have an outstanding experience."

  • "This night Jack & The Rippers provided the rock & oldies dance music. They filled the dance floor with delighted patrons. I had three special appetizers for dinner (Green Beans with a garlicky soy sauce,"to-die-for" Barbequed Chicken Wings drizzled with a Mango and Chili sauce, and a combination plate with feta cheese, homemade jam, homemade lamb tongue pastrami, and a baguette (trust me, it was fabulous!). My husband ordered from the regular menu and loved the All American Hamburger with perfectly fixed fries (we ask for extra crispy). We picked wonderful red wine -- great pricing. Darn that the special deserts are fleeting -- Coconut & Pineapple Swirl Sorbet, Honey-Ginger Ice Cream -- bring them back!"

  • "What a shame that the Blue Dragon is only opened Thurs. thru Sun. night. The food is fabulous, the dining experience unique (the restaurant has no roof and is open to the stars), the prices below that of the resorts, and LIVE music and dancing (if so moved) included in the experience. The music is different depending on the night (Hawaiian, Jazz, Rock, Blues), so check before making the reservation. My husband and I try to eat here once a week. Yes, we are locals, and this is definitely a not to be missed experience. The chef caters to special diets and always has several specials for seasonal favorites. The food is prepared with imagination and care."

  • "Forget your inhibition get out and dance. You don't need a partner and don't expect to find one, just have fun! Music is always good. You will always find something on the menu you will like - or don't eat, just snack and drink. If you forget to make reservations (recommended) ask if you can hang around the tree - you will have a ball. Leave the little ones at home because they will become tired and bored and spoil your time."

  • "It is a great neighborhood restaurant/bar away from the Beach scene. My food was good, nothing great. The music was ok and it just felt like a nice Hawaiian local place away from the resorts."

  • "The Blue Dragon is a unique suPper club! The food is excellent and so is the service! Every night there is a new musical experience! I would recommend this place to anyone!"

  • "This is an outdoor restaurant with music on some nights. If there is music, you may prefer to sit on the outer patio if you want to converse. There were a variety of menu choices from fish to burgers, but the specialty for me was the vegetarian fare, all local, all fresh, all delicious. We even got to harvest our own micro-greens salad. The fish was also very good."

  • "Blue Dragon has good ambience, drinks, and food. Our server was friendly but not always accessible. We had to flag her down for a 2nd round of drinks and more water. Maybe she was overworked and couldn't properly cover her tables."

  • "Only saw John Keawe for 45 minutes and that was disappointing. I should not have made a reservation for 8:15. I won't make that mistake again plus service was winding down and slow. We got our order in 30 minutes after we arrived. Food was good."

  • "It's got good food, with plenty of choices, good drinks, good energy and good music. What more could you ask for?"

  • "Great spot for live music and outdoor dining. Food was very good, but the scene is what you go for. Like being in a Jimmy Buffet song!"

  • "John Keawe and ohana were great! Food was awesome. Only problems were with two service helpers. Our waitress was very good, but one helper started to take away our dessert while we were still eating it!! Couldn't believe he couldn't see the plate wasn't empty and we were still eating. Then another server when refilling our water glasses and when clearing plates, reached in front of us. A server should never reach from one side to the other placing their arm in front of your face. I hope these two guys are just new and learning the ropes."

  • "Great venue and menu! Our server, Cindy - has been there since it's opening and is THE BEST!! Everyone there is wonderful, but she shines!!!"

  • "Food is always consistently good. Love the pasta pomodoro with shrimp. Fresh fish of the day is always picture perfect in taste and presentation. Try the chicken and waffles with lavender ice cream. Desserts are too pretty to eat....a layer each of avocado, tomato and bacon ice cream sandwiched between lavender cake. Where else can you literally dine beneath the stars. No roof on this place. Give it a try."

  • "The Blue Dragon has everything going for it. Although very near the ocean, it cannot have an ocean view so it has walls and an open ceiling with views of the night sky and tall palms all lit up. You might be in Morocco. You might be in Mailbu. You are someplace the weather is nearly always warm at night. You are in Hawaii, and you can tell that, even though the place whispers of other places. The music is always special. Usually jazzy, often danceable The food is thought about, original, tasty. There is no place like the Blue Dragon, anywhere. It may be similar to mainland jazz clubs, but being open to the sky and featuring a combination of local and global talent, it cannot help but being one of a kind."

  • "The Blue Dragon is a star in a group of excellent local restaurants in Kohala which serve the sublimely delicious local produce flavorfully prepared. As a vegetarian I appreciate the number of options, and chose the tofu dish with roasted vegetables. So healthy and delicious. The staff is friendly, professional and casually attentive, as the ambiance is relaxed with live music playing every night."

  • "First time in Hawaii, recommended by long time visitor. Live music was what enticed us to go. We were very impressed with their caliber. Excellent service added to a great night out. We were a party of 4 visiting Canadians. Food was a little pricey."

  • "This restaurant was recommended highly. It was cute and the waitress was so sweet. The music was good. However, when the food came so did the flies. They were obnoxious flying all over the food. Unfortunately, it ruined our experience. It was hard to enjoy the food because we were swatting at flies. The staff brought citronella candles but they didn't really touch the flies. The waitress was apologetic and seemed embarrassed. We just wanted to get through the meal and leave."

  • "Enjoyed dancing under a moonlit sky to great live music. How many restaurants have a big dance floor - complete with a real palm tree soaring up to the open sky - and delicious food? The fish tacos and hamburgers made with local beef were so tasty. The ambience is A+!"

  • "sweet aloha service, good food, fine music, good drinks"

  • "My son and daughter-in-law recommended Blue Dragon and we're so glad we took their advice. What a charming combination of great food under the stars and the entertainment of a local band and dancing. I had delicious fish tacos and my husband had the fish special. We both liked my tacos best! We sat at the "bar" that's outside the restaurant but at a window overlooking the band. We thought it was the best seat in the house-- in the action but not too close to the music, so we could talk."

  • "This is one of our favorite spots on the Big Island. The food is always excellent, and every night there is a different musical group. Great place to dance when they have a rock band. It all makes for a really fun evening."

  • "Make a reservation. Place is crazy busy! Be ready to spend time finding parking. Tiny lot and almost impossible to navigate way out to find due to the chaotic roadside parking. Live music was great! Dress code was across the board. Casual dress to blue jean miniskirts, knee high moccasin boots and flip flops. All age ranges (including little kids). This is a local’s hangout with tourists mixed in. Food is FRESH. Just caught/picked! Service is friendly and a little slow. Seating is a little unusual and bench seating feels like you’re sharing a chair with some away from the music. Lots of dancing! Look for the coupon. They advertise in local free literature – we were able to get ½ off the second entrée, which was a great value!"

  • "This is a great spot. There is a live band which plays oldies all night. The food is quite good and the bartender is the best ontheisland."

  • "Blue Dragon is an all outdoor seating Hawaiian hot spot. The food is eclectic with sauces and home made pickles and modern ingredients. The seafood is first rate right out of the ocean on the doorstep. The place has no view and is concentrated on the interior entertainment. They have Bands and dancing every night. Try the dragon balls (crab cakes in polenta, lots of crab). Two of our party had the fresh catch and it was good. I didn't find anything I wanted and stuck to the appetizers. The drinks from the bar were stiff and reasonably priced."

  • "We just returned from 2 months on the Big Island and went to the Blue Dragon 5 times - we love it! We choose our nights based on the group that is performing, but the food is an added bonus - amazingly fresh and reasonably priced. There is also something magical about the setting, as the evening gets darker, the palm trees light up and the stars come out. We have had three different servers and they were all excellent - attentive and accommodating. And amazingly, each time we were there, the server, without even being asked, separated our bill by couple. Once we were there as a party of 8, the couples weren't even sitting together, and the server figured it out on her own. Our favorite groups are I'land Boiz and Johnny Shot!!"

  • "Service and food were good but seems to be a driving force of corporate strategy behind overall ambiance and staff performance. One wonders if The best part of the evening - the musicians- are paid by the corporation as they should be ? Sharing the profits with everyone is possibly a radical notion but necessary in a state that thrives on attracting tourism through the blessing of the Aloha Spirit."

  • "The place is filled with locals. The music is indoors to listen to it, or outdoors more as background. It has mostly locally grown food put together deliciously."

  • "We were lucky enough to receive a honeymoon gift card to this place since its pretty pricey but well worth it! I suggest going later in the evening while the sun is gone because at sunset it was still pretty warm in there which attracted the bugs. Our server Bo was awesome! So friendly and lovely to us. The music was perfect for a romantic night out plus we made some little gecko friends. The tables were nicely spaced so we didn't feel like we were a part of anyone else's dinner or conversation. The food and drinks were amazing! Such wonderful combination of flavors including a Bacon, avocado, tomato ice cream sandwich! Definitely make reservations to be seated in the main entertainment area!"

  • "Great food and comfortable seating on bench with cushions. Service was great and food was hot when served. Closeness to entertainment was wonderful and sound was not overbearing. Parking was the only problem. Had to park on the street. Atmosphere very pleasant."

  • "Great food & good oldies band. This place was Rockin'! Some tables are very close to the dance floor so ask to be seated further away or not! Check their listing for live music b/ c it changes all the time. I bet you can find some music you enjoy & you will have some good food too. The fish tacos were very good & the fresh catch of the day, Ono, was also prepared nicely. Parking can be a problem. Be aware of for the No Parking signs on the road! Go and have Fun!"
