Diner Reviews
  • "I love Blue Dragon. My favorite place on the island."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "Fried chicken (boneless and free range from Hawaii island), Greens w/bacon, Creamy Mashed Potatoes and gravy -- my spouse and I were in heaven. This was a special, but the fried chicken and waffles on the regular menu will transport you just the same. For an appetizer we tried the Vegetable Summer Rolls -- rice wrappers (not fried), stuffed w/mango and other veggies, and served with an "island tweaked" sweet & sour sauce -- beautiful presentation and taste. The Sangiovese wine was reasonably priced and a genuine value. The music this night was blues and the dance floor filled with delighted patrons, which included us. We love this restaurant."

  • "Nice variety of dishes all infused with an island flair. From simple burgers to more complex pastas, steaks, and fresh fish specials. Live Music rounds out the experience."

  • "Visiting from California, it was one of our best nights out. Great food. Wonderful ,efficient, knowledgable and friendly waitress. Energetic fun atmosphere with live music. Enjoyed it. I would go again, if I visit the Big Island again."

  • "We always go to the Blue Dragon when on the Island. Never disappointed with the experience. Great food, service and entertainment. Don't miss going to this fine venue."

  • "We've passed by The Blue Dragon for years and never stopped for dinner. So glad we booked after reading great reviews. The service was warm and friendly, food terrific and the live music fantastic! The chef uses local ingredients to great result and this will be a new "must!" Be sure to try the Dragon Ballz:-)"

  • "What a great place! Music is always super, people of all ages, kids dancing under the stars. Food is delicious. This time we had the ahi poke appetizer, steak and a great burger. It's always a great night out."

  • "We so enjoyed John Keawe and his Ohana. Such great music and wonderful dance! Food was pretty good but not the best fish special I have had there. Drinks were great. Weather was perfect so we were gratefule for a beautiful night there."

  • "Went on the recommendation of Bo whom we met earlier in the day. She is a waitress at the restaurant. Our overall experience was very good. Good food, excellent service, good drinks. The live music was a bonus. Would definitely go again. Next time I'm requesting a table with chairs, not stools."

  • "We went to the Blue Dragon this past Friday and experienced a very infrequent drenching rain on the Big Island. The staff at the Blue Dragon, especially our wait staff, did a great job of accommodating our needs and that of many others. They kept a great attitude and the service was great in spite of very challenging conditions. I will go back again."

  • "Blue Dragon was recommended to us by a local while we were on the Big Island for our 20th Anniversary and we are so glad we took her advice! The cocktails were inventive and delicious. Our server was exceptionally knowledgeable and guided us to specific dining choices we were looking to try. The fish we dined on was locally caught that day. Many of the vegetables served were home grown by the owner. Amazing dining experience and the entertainment just added to the ambiance under the stars! This place is a must!"

  • "For live music and dancing, Lorenzo's Army (Friday) and Bump City (Saturday) were the best this weekend. The specials in drinks and food have been beyond good. Chef made ahi dumplings with a soy truffle sauce (to die for), and has been offering specials on hamburgers all month. Peanut butter and waffles (as the bun) with range fed beef -- who knew it could be so good? For desert, mango madness captured our fancy -- mango ice cream served on a half mango with a sprinkling of chili (and some other flavors) -- creamy, sweet, very mild heat -- do it again! We normally order wine (very reasonably priced and good), but tried the bartender's island version of a mint julep one night --- it was just right on the hot night. "

  • "The atmosphere at Blue Dragon is great. The band that played while I was there was incredible. The server that we had was fair but the bussing staff was incredible. They would swoop in like a ninja and fill you water glass or take your empty plate without you ever knowing they were there. "

  • "I love the Blue Dragon- food is good to really good (fresh ono was outstanding) service is usually excellent. Great sitting outside in the breeze and choosing to dance or just listen to live music. This is the real "room without a roof"- "

  • "Several bands on island play good blues music with solid beats for dancing, and Tomi Isobe Blues Band is one of the best. The Blue Dragon is fortunate to book them about every 6 weeks. This night they kept the dance floor full and the restaurant buzzing with interested spectators. The food and drink was good, as always. My spouse and I ordered the fish tacos from the regular menu and enjoyed every bite. The restaurant makes its own sorbets and ice creams, and is not afraid to experiment with flavors. We had a special exotic fruit ice cream ( a type of chipotle) for desert which tasted like brown sugar and pear, but a bit too dry (not creamy) for our tastes. Still very interesting and worth the taste. "

  • "Dine and dance under blue sky (or stars)! Fresh local food excellently prepared, I had fresh catch and hubby a shrimp pasta. Dragon Balz appetizer was yummy, not too spicy, we each had a nice glass of wine, and house made ice cream for desert."

  • "We had a great time celebrating our anniversary and our friend's birthday. Our waiter was fantastic! Very friendly and attentive. Will be a stop every trip to the Big Island! "

  • "Don't worry if it's pouring rain elsewhere, the sun rises and sets over the Blue Dragon! It was pouring where we were staying, but as we approached the Blue Dragon, it was clear! All outdoor seating. Live entertainment every night. We tried just about all the appetizers and then hit the fresh fish! All were great! Not to be missed -- don't leave without getting some Dragon Dust to take home with you ($10 a bottle) -- the Blue Dragon's secret to their Dragon Fries! Oh so yummy! "

  • "We are frequent diners at Blue Dragon. The atmosphere is always lively, the food always delicious, the drinks delightful, and the service is fantastic. We went for our wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. Our waiter was polite and friendly. The food arrived quickly. The musician was a local Honoka'a boy, singing cover songs just like the original musicians. We had a wonderful evening and we highly recommend the Blue Dragon to anyone looking for a wonderful evening."

  • "This was our third trip here...the first one we had cocktails and appetizers but the last two were meals and I have to say that I am VERY disappointed. The prices are not cheap, the food is mediocre at best, and the service was terrible. We had reservations so being seated was no problem but the waiter took over 35 minutes to take our order. We really never saw the waiter again except to sell us more cocktails. Our meal was nearly complete both times when he came to ask if there was anything that we needed. Heck, where were you when we started eating? Anyhow, if we want to drink and dance, this is a great place but think twice on eating here. Too much $$$$$ for the food quality & service."

  • "This was the perfect way to start our month long visit to the Big Island. We were there for the Sunday performance of the Olliephonics and were blown away by the "Big Band" music. Our party of eight all thought the food was beautifully presented and delicious. Great Mai Tais too. A very memorable night!"

  • "A lively band was playing some hits and my early and preteens (all 4 of them) had a lot of fun on the dance floor. Looking up, you could see the stars. Pretty cool place. Glad I finally went."

  • "We have been here several times on our visits to Hawaii. We love this place. Excellent service, great food and the service. The snapdragon drink is amazing. The bands have always been great. Can't wait to go back again. "

  • "What a great place. Our only regret is we came across this place on our last night. Great food, live band to dance to between dining on fresh farm-to-table food. Highly recommend this restaurant. Note the hours as they are not open every day."

  • "We enjoyed a fun filled time at the Blue Dragon. The food was outstanding and the drinks were great. The band was lively with very diverse music. This is a must-do while on the Big Island."

  • "The food and service were wonderful. John Keawe and his ohana are great!! It started to rain a bit, so not many people. Wish the restaurant had a rectractible roof so rain would never be an issue. Feel bad for the servers and entertainers when the rain comes, "

  • "Though the band was good. We just like to talk over dinner...our food varied from really delicious (mahi mahi and crab cakes ) to meh (South American plate) to should have been sent back (tough Lamb) . Expensive if you order the entrees, which we did."

  • "I always say the Blue Dragon is the BEST dinner~dancing venue in the STATE of Hawaii~~because it IS. I have been to all the islands while living here for 20 years and nothing comes close to this, for which I am forever grateful!"

  • "We booked dinner at 6 pm and were able to enjoy the music that came on at 7 pm. The place is casual, colourful, and welcoming inside. We started with 'summer rolls' - rice paper wrapped around delicious and crunchy vegetables. I ordered the mahi mahi, HB had the fish tacos. Both were delicious. The tacos are served with homemade tortilla chips guacamole and fresh salsa...very fresh and flavourful. For dessert we shared the molten lava flourless chocolate cake with homemade Tahitian vanilla ice cream. Rich and delicious! We also managed to snag a taste of their famous maple bacon ice cream. It was also delicious, and a very different ice cream! This is a popular spot with the locals and the visitors who manage to find out about it!"

  • "With the freshest veggies and fish you could possibly find, cooked to perfection, seated outside, under warm skies and with very good local entertainment as an accompaniment, how can you go wrong? Our second time here and we'll be back next time we visit the big island. The portion sizes are perfect and the value is good. This time, we were here as a couple but last time went with a family group that included a child. The staff is very accommodating of children and, maybe because of the outdoor atmosphere or maybe because it is Hawaii, I cannot imagine that anyone having dinner here would find children an obstacle to enjoyment of their meal."

  • "If you are looking for a night out that offers a great menu, service & music/dance venue; this is it for locals & visitors feel "at home". "

  • "Live music and dancing 5 nights a week. Wednesday & Thursday nights are usually Hawaiian music (of the highest quality and much of it danceable). Friday & Saturday is a rocking dance scene (groups vary). Sunday is specialty stuff that is always changing. Last week was Tango the week before a 12 piece old school dance band (lots of wind instruments). The ambiance is 1950-60's Los Angles night club. Open air and coconut trees above and a very friendly atmosphere where people tend to mingle and meet or meet up with friends on the dance floor. There is a nice outside seating area away from the music and dancers for quiet dinners and dinner parties."

  • "Blue Dragon has some of the best local musicians, great food, friendly, courteous service - considered by many to be the most happening place on the West side of the island. Food is fabulous, great beverage selections, and the ambiance is the best! The very attentive staff works hard at making sure you're comfortable and you have an outstanding experience."

  • "This night Jack & The Rippers provided the rock & oldies dance music. They filled the dance floor with delighted patrons. I had three special appetizers for dinner (Green Beans with a garlicky soy sauce,"to-die-for" Barbequed Chicken Wings drizzled with a Mango and Chili sauce, and a combination plate with feta cheese, homemade jam, homemade lamb tongue pastrami, and a baguette (trust me, it was fabulous!). My husband ordered from the regular menu and loved the All American Hamburger with perfectly fixed fries (we ask for extra crispy). We picked wonderful red wine -- great pricing. Darn that the special deserts are fleeting -- Coconut & Pineapple Swirl Sorbet, Honey-Ginger Ice Cream -- bring them back!"

  • "What a shame that the Blue Dragon is only opened Thurs. thru Sun. night. The food is fabulous, the dining experience unique (the restaurant has no roof and is open to the stars), the prices below that of the resorts, and LIVE music and dancing (if so moved) included in the experience. The music is different depending on the night (Hawaiian, Jazz, Rock, Blues), so check before making the reservation. My husband and I try to eat here once a week. Yes, we are locals, and this is definitely a not to be missed experience. The chef caters to special diets and always has several specials for seasonal favorites. The food is prepared with imagination and care."
