Diner Reviews
  • "Went to Blu for dinner for the first time last weekend with family (3 of us). We had the salmon, steak and shrimp/grits. All of us were happy with our food. Two of us had the kale salad (yumm) and one had the hearts of romaine salad. We'd go back again."

  • "Fresh fish is the feature of the house and is done well, particularly the grilled whole fish. The wait staff seems a bit preoccupied with themselves or their fellow servers, but they eventually see you and respond. This is not a place for a quiet conversation, as the low ceiling in the front room amplifies the sounds of the guests and kitchen and tvs. But the fresh fish draws you back."

  • "Sometimes you go out for dinner and are so pleased that you can't decide what dish was the best. That was our experience at Blu. We started off with tuna tartare and my wife had the fried oysters. Both were prepared perfectly and the presentation was spot on. We then had the romaine and mixed greens salads. The bleu cheese on the romaine was delicious. We then finished with the diver scallops and the shrimp and grits. The scallops were the best scallops I have ever tasted, and the shrimp and grits were equally amazing. The waitress was very welcoming and knowledgeable. For someone who doesn't get many date nights away from the kids, it's always a delight when we discover a place that provides great food from start to finish."

  • "We were only in town for a night and wanted to check out something "local". Boy did we find gold! Everything from the cocktails to the dessert were above expectations. The calamari was delicious. We had the catch of the day (swordfish I think) and the Shrimp and grits, both excellent. Then on to dessert- the coconut crisp cookies filled with lemon goat cheese and raspberry coulis.... a perfect ending. I would send anyone here. If you're not familiar with the area, the parking can be tricky."

  • "It was nice to find a local restaurant that has both outstanding food and gluten free options."

  • "We've dined here many times primarily b/c of the oysters...so delicious. Eating in the garden room is fine most of the year but during the summer it is a bit too warm. Otherwise, terrific."

  • "Excellent food and service. The trout he had was better than he had had in the mountains a few weeks ago. Shrimp and scallops done to perfection."

  • "The server was very attentive; however the overall food & ambience was for us, a down fall. We had gone there because of future guests that will be coming to town & I'm glad we experienced it first. The staff is worth going back for maybe a cocktail."

  • "I have heard nothing but positive recommendations from others about Blu, but the food exceeded all of my expectations. Best Tuna Tartare that I have ever had."

  • "The service is professional and knowledgeable. Excellent pairing recommendations. The food portions were generous, and the plates were presented beautifully. The flavors were excellent. High-point of the meal was the freshwater oysters. Only (very minor) downside of this place is the confusing parking situation, but once you realize that you won't be parking out front, not a problem."

  • "Unbelievable food in NC where I was visiting for a short period of time and will definitely be returning. Creative food ideas put to work perfectly the food is great and the drink menu is suiting for a five star restaurant that is priced at a bargain!"

  • "Our meal here was not remarkable. In truth, everything needed salt. But all fish was fresh so that was a plus."

  • "We come from Greensboro. Which is an hour away. Still one of our favorites when attending ADF or DPAC."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The calamari was too chewy and the romaine in the caesar salad was more spines than greens. Disappointed."

  • "We had never been to Blu before and went for special occasion. The food was fantastic, service spectacular and a unique wine list. Loved it and a great place for dinner and great seafood."

  • "From the outside, you don't expect much but as you cross through the door you will be pleasantly surprised as the clean, crisp decor that Blu boasts. The staff is consistently at your service and was able to keep my glass full of water/beer, which is an accomplishment for most waiters and staff. They are trained on the drinks and food on the menu, which is also very nice given the vast assortment of choices on the menu and drink list. Any restaurant lives on the quality and consistency of their food, and Blu delivers. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and even the bread and butter complimented everything perfectly. I was skeptical but Blu not only met my expectations... they constantly exceeded them. We will be returning fairly soon."

  • "I went with my boyfriend for restaurant week and it was just lovely. It's a bit dive-y looking on the outside (gravel parking lot), but the inside is quaint and charming. The pre-fixed menu had a great variety of selections and all of the food was wonderful. Portions were good; not too big or too small. I definitely left feeling full but not overstuffed. The key lime pie was absolutely outstanding, and service was wonderful as well. I really have no complaints."

  • "The waitress was superb and knowledgeable. The portion was adequate but could have used a bit more scallops and shrimp expecially at the price being charged. The preparation suggested a gifted chef but the sublety of flavors, diver scallop, shrimp, prosciutto, grapefruit, and arugala were ultimately overpowered by the vinaigrette (balsamic or sherry?). This restaurant certainly has the chops to be something special but it needs to reconsider its price structure...$14 for a glass of Reisling is just a bit presumptuous."

  • "My husband and I have dinner with another couple about every six weeks and thus far this has been the best!"
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "Besides the friendliness of the wait-staff, the whole attitude of the restaurant seems to aim for confidence on the part of diners with allergies. Gluten-free items are marked on the menu, and the server had a tip-sheet that helped her figure out whether items are dairy-free. The chef is also quite willing to modify ingredients, when possible. Extra points for providing water without ice."

  • "corner table too dark. Can't see the menu. Service great. Food great. A little overpriced."

  • "Blue continues to deliver consistent food quality but seemed a little overwhelmed on graduation weekend. I cannot blame them for that but it is a much better spot for a dinner on a weeknight or less busy occasion. Also wish the wine list was priced a little lower as the markup percentage seems to be well beyond other restaurants in the area."

  • "Service was perfectly timed: we never felt rushed, nor like we were waiting. Good wine list with a knowledgeable, helpful server. Great oyster selection. Carolina trout very yummy! Generous portions."

  • "Our expectations were more than met by this unassuming place. I had a Cuban fish stew that was wonderful. The French fries are very good, too. This will be our stop in Durham in the future."

  • "Our waitperson was off the charts great. The food and wine were awesome and we had a good experience."

  • "We visited Blu on a Monday night. It has a convenient location and is a comfortable spot to meet a friend for dinner, but as much as I wanted to, I could not find anything special to like about Blu. The food was ok, at best. Bread was burnt on the bottom and cold, as if it had come out of the cooler. My trout was drenched in a burnt (not browned) butter sauce. Hubby's Amberjack was better. Our server tried to be helpful but clearly had no knowledge of wine or fish. She compared Amberjack to tuna and recommended a sweet German wine as "dry". She was cheerful and attentive, however, just not educated about the product. Durham could use a good seafood restaurant, unfortunately Blu is not it."

  • "Unimaginative, unchanging, tiny menu. Way overpriced oysters. Basic seafood prep errors -- scales on whole fish, overcooking."
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "Our first time at Blu and a very nice experience. Our server was helpful and attentive, presentation very nice, and food well prepared. Their calamari is some of the best I have eaten, so tender and the sauce is perfect. We will be back."

  • "Blu Seafood and Bar is an excellent place to dine for any occasion. It was my first time dining there and it did not disappoint. The food was outstanding, as well as the service. The waitress was extremely helpful with recommendations. I highly recommend this restaurant. "

  • "The meal was excellent but our wait time for our food to arrive was extremely long. The waiter Adrian was extremely kind in regards to giving us dessert to make up for the extremely long wait. Other tables who were seated after us received their meals and were almost done with their dinner before our meals arrived. The wait time from this experience would cause me to think twice in regards to taking my love to this place again. The meal was amazing once it finally arrived."

  • "This was my first visit to Blu. I had the shrimp & grits and they were outstanding. My wife had a Mahi special and it was excellent as well. Presentation, taste, and temperature were all excellent. The reataurant isn't very attractive from the exterior. The interior is only moderately better. For this price point you might expect something a bit nicer. But the food makes it worthy the return trip soon."

  • "We go to this restaurant routinely and it is always delicious. Great bar drinks. The crab Mac and cheese is a must try. The diver scallops and shrimp were succulent!"

  • "Some people like long dinners. I do to but not all the time. Blu had great food, good service but boy were they slow! It took us 2 hours for our meal in a group of three. I think the kitchen couldn't keep up with all the orders. I would go back despite the slow service."

  • "Not spectacular, but can be counted on for always having fresh and tasty seafood."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The food was absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to return. The wine list was extensive, delicious and reasonable. There's nothing about Blu that would stop me from recommending this to friends, colleagues or family."

  • "This was our first visit to Blu Seafood and it was a delightful find in Durham. The food was nothing short of great, well prepared, fresh and tasty. Mountain trout in browned butter. My dinner guest had some special requirements which were met with a smile. The wait staff was attentive but not overly so. The ambiance was perfect for a great meal and conversation. Key Lime Pie was a marvelous way to end the meal. We'll be back for sure."

  • "We enjoyed our meal at Blu, and the fish was fresh and well prepared. Salads however were very ordinary and bland. We were happy with the wine selection and enjoyed the whites we ordered. We had a good experience however the quality was not at a level we have come to expect at the best restaurants we find when we dine in Durham."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Based on friend's reviews, we were eager to dine at Blu. The ambiance in the back room where we were seated was marginal: concrete floor, high ceilings with sound-muting panels, tables bare of flowers/lights. Our waiter was very polished and knowledge and attentive at the beginning. About the time our entrees arrived a table of nine was seated at the other end of the room. Keep in mind the room was already moderately loud with conversation. The table of 9 was very loud and didn't seem to notice or care about anyone else. Having only one waiter in this space of 6 tables, service went from attentive to absent. My entree was over cooked but the waiter didn't ask until we had finished eating. Would not deliberately eat here again."
