Diner Reviews
  • "I've actually been here a few times, and every time, I say the food is great, then I return and I get amazed again by the taste. I love the Samurai Margarita, I get it every time, skirt steak and those peppers."

  • "Went in for a late lunch on Friday and was seated promptly. It took us about 5 minutes for us to get water and then another 10 minutes to order. The problem I have is that there were only 5 tables with people at them. Servers kept moving briskly through the establishment but none including ours to stop. Now you might say that it was something we did... but the table 10 feet away compained also! The food was good but the service dampened our moods..... There are so many choices in San Francisco that I won't be back...."

  • "We were disappointed. Their lunch menu looked interesting; so we tried it for dinner. The tastes were very bland. Food looked good, but taste was low. Noise level extremely high; but perhaps that is a generational thing. Reservation was waiting and server was good."

  • "Lovely array of dishes. Magnificent service. Couldn't ask for more! I am a repeat customer."

  • "There were a variety of reasons that dinner was so disappointingly. 1) food wasn't very good 2) service was terrible (took for ever to get good) 3) place was so loud we couldn't hold a conversation 4) Food was WAY over priced. All around I wish I'd taken my money elsewhere."

  • "I've been to Blowfish several times now and I must say the quality of food NEVER disappoints! I went with a larger group this time so we tried things that I had never had including the Ritsu roll and the seared scallops! Yum! My favorite roll is still the Toshi Koshi! I can't rave enough about the food!"

  • "Still great on our fourth visit. Anticipate this to be our regular."

  • "We love, love, love Blowfish. Super creative menu! Great food and friendly, kind, attentive service. The DJ provides a perfect ambience…nice music with a surprise here and there. We'll be back for sure! Over and Over again…."

  • "we have been coming to Blowfish since it opened for special evenings. anniversaries, surprise date nights, etc. it never fails to impress with great drinks and surprising food - great sushi experiments. thanks again. we'll be back."

  • "It is a gem that never fails to please. Service and food are simply great. If you're a true sushi purist and balk at the idea of specialty rolls there's still a place for you here. And if you enjoy breaking out of those rigid sushi rules you'll truly enjoy the fare. Excellent appetizers that continually evolve and an excellent choice of creative rolls. We have gone at least 15-20 times over the past 3 years and have never had a bad experience. There is a noticeable difference between the SF location and the one on Santana Row in San Jose. The southern version simply pales in comparison to it's SF cousin."

  • "Very good Japanese food with the added dimension of an usually great drink menu, I normally do no have drinks but the list was so good I had 3, two which were sake based and do not even drink sake. Fun place and great food and service."

  • "This is my husband's favorite sushi restaurant and they never disappoint. Great service, amazing sushi, just an all-around good time. Try the oyster Russian Roulette!!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Fresh sashimi. Wasabi ice cream was surprisingly not spicy, it was a delightful adventure! Sashimi with sriracha is a great idea! We will definitely be back. Thanks Carmen for some of your suggestions! Friendly staff too."

  • "It is pretty expensive, but the sushi is fresh. They accommodated some gluten free dishes, which was very appreciated. Music also plays fairly loudly."

  • "I can't say enough good things about this place. We got there around 6:30 and the place was half full and people started filling up the place and the energy level rose with it. I even saw kids there. The seating for two right behind the cocktail bar is unique and allows a couple to have a surprisingly private meal even when the place was full. Now the sushi is amazing. Freshness in every bite. Be sure to glance the specials board above the sushi bar. We had the specials Bluefin and Wulu and both were amazing! Our waitress' recommendations were spot on from the sake, cocktails and food. And if you need a cab, they will even call one for you. Definitely will go back."

  • "Fun and young. Sushi wasn't the best in the city and portion size was a little small. It was still good and energetic. I will give it another try."

  • "Large variety of Japanese/Fusion choices that are not usually what you'd find in other similar places.. Good ambience with a DJ. We really enjoyed our food and time there."

  • "I guess it's a cool spot if you have no expectations for taste. Dishes are more about show than taste."

  • "Three of us visiting from Florida had a memorable lunch. Not to me missed if you truly enjoy sushi.....very fresh and artfully presented."

  • "After years of dining in SF, Blowfish is still one of my favorite sushi spots. The menu offers so many delicious and unique options, it's always *really* tough to make a decision about what to get. The food is wonderfully fresh, and the presentation is spectacular. The place is always a little too noisy, but it's worth it for some of the best sushi experiences in town."

  • "Definitely not the regular Japanese vibe. The decor is between a tattoo shop and a karaoke place! But the food never disappoints. Love the rolls and the Zen Garden for dessert (green tea cheesecake with green tea ice cream, so yum). The 3-star for service pertains to the fact we waited 50 min to get our rolls. It never happened to me before at Blowfish. And we were with a child! But the waitress was lovely and helpful. I believe it was an accident. It could also be that we came in early for dinner (compare to our previous times) around 6:30PM. The place was very quiet still, not really happening, contrarily to later in the night when you feel more in a trendy bar than at a zen garden! Which is what i love about Blowfish too!"

  • "The cabbie was surprised that I knew about this place because I don't live in SF and it's off the beaten path. This was my second time there and it was just as good! Lots of sushi choices and they are all good. Lots of sake choices too. The waitstaff knows their sushi and provided a great experience!"

  • "Blowfish still rocks. The place is always happening and the food is amazing. Had the pyramid tartar - always a favorite. If u r in a group try ordering six shooter Russian roulette. Coolest thing ever. Six oyster shooters that come in what looks like a revolver's magazine. You spin it and grab a drink. 5 are regular and one is sour."

  • "We enjoyed the scene, the food, the drinks and the whole experience. They did a great job. Thank you!"

  • "Think modern sushi. Must try the tuna tartar pyramid. They also have a bunch of interesting hot entree and appetizer items - like "the punch - which are these delicious marinated rare piece of filet mignon, and the black cod. They have an excellent and well-priced sashimi combination for more of a traditional Japanese flavor. Many of their specialty rolls are very unique - although I'd say these can be hit or miss. My favorite one right now is the Tenkomori."

  • "we were a group of 6 italians. we already know the restaurant and also this time we had a fantastic dinner. we shared the pyramid of tartare, ritsu roll, tempura and many other items from the menu, drinking the superb samurai margarita. every time we are in san francisco, we don't miss to go there."

  • "I came here for a friend's birthday and the experience was wonderful! The first thing I noticed was the nice mix of electronic music - I'm a fan, and it was nice to be in a non-American cultural restaurant that didn't need matching music to set the atmosphere. The food was all delicious, and I only wish I had deeper pockets to be able to try the whole menu! The only reason this gets 4/5 is that, while the server was very nice and had great recommendations, she was sometimes slow to check in on our table, sometimes allowing as much as 15 minutes to go by which is more than enough time for drinks or plates to go empty."

  • "Clearly located in a hipster area, Blowfish is a taxi ride away from downtown SF - but thoroughly worth the trip. Great food, music, atmosphere and attentive staff. We had a slight wait for our table and the Manageress was kind enough to cover our drinks while we waited. Food delightful and varied menu. Only advice - order your cab in advance to leave."

  • "I have always had great customer service and great food at Blowfish. The last time we went my little sister (who is not 21) wanted a non-alcoholic version of a specialty drink. Instead of the bartender making a bland drink without alcohol, the bartender make my sister an off the menu drink that tasted amazing. The service was prompt and friendly throughout the night. The food is a bit pricey, but worth every penny. I ordered the punch, ostrich portabello, to die for, edamame, and a few nigiri items, all of it was amazing."

  • "It gets a little tight in the space with parties of 15 or more. Food is excellent and really great for smaller groups or a date."

  • "This resteraunt was really nice and they have grear drinks and a dj too. Food is amazing and plated to perfection. Great find in the mission."

  • "As someone who is allergic (not just intolerant) to dairy products I was unable to eat the Risotto or Mash Potato - unfortunately the only other option was sticking rice - it would behove this establishment to provide at least on well made, tasty alternative. Who wants to eat sticky rice with an entree that isn't raw fish?"

  • "I have been wanting to try this legend in SF for years and was not disappointed. . The sushi menu is also extremely creative! It will take many trips to work one's way through all the enticing possibilities to try. The tartare dish was spectacular and a must-have - homemade chips to go with were perfect.. Each sushi dish equally amazing . We loved the mushrooms as a side dish and the seaweed salad!. We tried numerous sakes and the server was helpful with each selection providing tasting notes and took us through a progression pairing the sakes with each dish we tried right up to dessert where we had a warm, sweet and unfiltered sake that was plumy and yummy. Perfection all around. Definititly worth the trip - even if out of your way."

  • "The food was amazing and the staff was very sweet but we felt forgotten a lot during dinner. The worst was asking for a desert w a candle twice but we never received it. We left without singing our friend happy bday :("

  • "Food was mediocre. Catered to YUPPIEs' taste buds. Too pricey for the mediocre food. Too loud. Could barely hear myself or my companion speak. Service was not attentive enough."
    Dined on 11/1/2013
  • "It took us literally 50 minutes for a waitress to show up at our table. Took us another 20 to get our drinks. After that, we were ready to get some more drinks, more appetizers. etc... But the waitress would just go by the table and ignore us. There were only 3 waitresses at the place too. The food was good, not great. Very pretty plated but way too expensive. Stupid expensive. Very cool looking place. But service is terrible. Took us 2 and a half hours to have dinner. Not going back."

  • "The oysters on ice are always perfect with my favorite wasabi tobiko. To Die For, lobster and filet mignon with wasabi marscapone, and the spider roll. Halibut Crudo with a crisp mango salsa and white truffle oil! And we also had a great mixed fish sushi roll with 5 or 6 different fishes. Picked off the mackerel, not our favorite, but otherwise an epic, combo roll with so many different flavors & textures. Respectfully, Kathleen & Corey Ahrens Roseville, CA"
