Diner Reviews
  • "Great place to eat when the conversation is important. Low noise level and great service."

  • "Nice place to spend your evening. Food is really tasty. A little expensive, but food is extremely fresh and cooked perfectly. If you need to have a good meal, just entry will not be enough. You have to order appetizer, entry and dessert."

  • "I had heard a few good reviews of Bliss and was anxious to take my out of town clients there for dinner. It was dismal, dimly lit, and the food was tasteless, especially for the price point. The restaurant was completely empty except for one other patron at the bar, surprising for a 7pm on a Tuesday, when reservations at nearby restaurants were unavailable. After eating our dinner, we understood why no one was there. It was extremely mediocre and we will never go the Bliss again. The only bright spot was our very sweet waiter."

  • "Best Meal, Service and Cocktails from start to finish! Penny, our server was terrific and the owner whom had pleasure of meeting was the most gracious host, welcoming and congenial. Cannot wait to go again...my daughter's birthday and she was thrilled afterwards."

  • "Bliss was once our favorite Philly pre-show dining spot, but it had been a few years since we'd visited. Wow, what a difference a few years makes! It was a busy night, but that doesn't excuse the dry and flavorless dishes we were served. The new menu didn't seem terribly creative, either. It also took nearly an hour to be served our food (although to be fair, we were 15 minutes late for our reservation). Maybe if the menu improves, we'll give Bliss another shot someday, but I promise we will be dining elsewhere for the rest of the 2014 show season."

  • "We were very pleased with the restaurant, the view and open air onto Broad Street, the server, and the food! Wonderful dinner!"

  • "Although the food was delicious, my wife's meal was stone cold upon arrival so she asked to have it reheated. It took so long, I was finished my meal by the time she received hers."

  • "Bliss is a great place to go for a friendly atmosphere where the service is always friendly yet professional. The patrons are friendly at te bar so a perfect place to go alone. The menu is inventive . The food quality is fresh and well prepared. Best happy hour in the city."

  • "Bliss has a nice but limited menu and the food is quite good. The prices are high for a casual restaurant with little room to move and no décor."

  • "Dining at Carmel was a very nice overall experience. The staff was very warm and welcoming, the menu is robust with options for all, and the ambience is just right. Burger was excellent, lemon chicken was perfect, steak was spot on, and the lobster/shrimp risotto was very good with lots of seafood. We shared a chicken artichoke flatbread and it was excellent. I know it is a good place when my wife says, "I'd go back there.""

  • "I eat at Bliss regularly, particularly before a concert or play. The food is always well-prepared and subtley flavored, the service friendly and helpful, and the ambiance bright and conducive to conversation. We often just grab a seat at the bar if we're in a bit of a hurry or want some light fare, and that's also a pleasurable experience. Never had a bad experience here, and while my wife and I aren't "regulars", we're treated that way. We always feel good, even "blissful", after a meal here."

  • "My husband and I went to Bliss for a Saturday date night. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was fancy but solid and delicious. I would recommend to anyone wanting a downtown delight."

  • "Very friendly. Nice ambience. VERY slow service and kitchen. VERY disorganized service. Waitress got several parts of our order wrong after all that waiting. Was very nice and sweet, but did an inefficient job. Food was good."

  • "We were extremely happy with our dining experience at Bliss. A great location for before or after a show! The cauliflower soup was delicious as was the Trout dish. We really appreciated their personal attention towards my daughter on her birthday, would highly recommend!"

  • "The dining public seems to have forgotten Bliss, and it's a shame. The food was great, service perfect, and it is an all around perfect alternative to the current "hot" restaurants."

  • "Friendly restaurant with a diverse menu that can accommodate diverse preferences of a small group of diners. The staff tries hard it is just nice to be in a smaller restaurant where people care."

  • "We like Bliss for dining before the Orchestra or theater. Our last two dinners here have been particularly good, and their service is keyed to making sure people make curtain times. Prices are a tad high, but you expect to pay for the location, and when the food is so good, it becomes less of an issue. "

  • "My brother and I decided to take my mother for brunch somewhere we have never been this Mothers day. I had walked past bliss a few times and saw online it had good reviews. I was pretty disappointed by the food. It was not what we expected at all. Our server was very nice but not that great of a server. The ambience was not a problem. I was more disappointed byt the quality and service of food. The presentation also was nnot appealing. I am not one to complain but I honestly feel that it should be known. We paid 140$ for our meal and we were not pleased at all, especially in comparison to other restaurants in the area."

  • "We go to Bliss in bad weather, because it is two blocks from the Kimmel Center. The food has been fine for me in the several times we've been there, and Saturday's scallops preceded by octopus were both quite tasty. My partner was not enthusiastic about his halibut dish, and in fact said to me over dinner tonight at Gotham Bar & Grill in NYC, "Let's not go there ever again." I can't explain this, am just noting it. We're not usually this far apart on a restaurant. When a thunderstorm threatens, though, we will probably return, rather than do, e.g., a 7 LONG-block walk to Brauhaus Schmitz, our original destination on Saturday (and a restaurant new to us) before the unsettled weather occurred. "

  • "The pics looked like a nice romantic place so I bought the groupon for my boyfriend's birthday. I made reservations for 8:30, I requested a both and wanted a little something to come out when we order dessert. They were very accommodating. When we got there it only a few people at the bar, very quite which I didn't mind to much since it was a Thursday night. The service was great, the food was just ok for me. I need a little more action in my food, it was to bland. It wasn''t a big deal to me since I had a groupon. "

  • "I have been to Bliss a couple times now in the last few months...food consistently good...noise level good... cant wait to frequent again.... not trendy and loud ...good for any occasion"

  • "The best scallops I've ever had. Everyone in our group loved their food. The waitstaff are friendly and prompt. It gets busy with the pre-orchestra crowd, being right next to the Academy of Music and Kimmel Center. This is the third time I've been to Bliss, and will definitely go back as soon as we can. I tell everyone that Bliss has some of the best dinners in Philly."

  • "As a fairly regular diner at Bliss, my visits have never gone wrong. Pacing always goes as agreed upon, food is a pleasure and bar staff know exactly what "dry" means. Keep up the good work!"

  • "What a wonderful lunch on our anniversary. Kevin was phenomenal for our server. What energy! The food was just what we wanted. We saw what the next table had and changed one order though as the hamburger and crab cake sandwiches were much bigger than we would have wanted. I will definitely go back sometime when I am in the city. It will also be a good pre-theater dining experience."

  • "Eight of us went for a pre-concert lunch before going to the Philadelphia Symphony matinee concert. The waiter knew our schedule and went above and beyond in every way possible. Seven of us ordered the three course fixed price lunch which served salmon as one entree choice and it was outstanding. Whether we ordered soup or salad as our first course it did not matter. Both were positively received. And sorbet or gelato for dessert is a wonderful offering. The flavor choices are mind-boggling and it is such a refreshing way to end the meal. We got back to Kimmel Center just in time 1 and 1/2 hours after we entered Bliss. The waiter readily agreed to separate checks and we stuck to our bargain of adding at least a 20% tip for him. "

  • "Went here to celebrate a birthday and used a groupon we had gotten. Place is definetly on the pricey side, so it was good to have that buffer. We each got a glass of wine, which was good, but not outstanding. We had the cheese plate as an appetizer. It was good, but a little skimpy. For dinner I got the hanger steak which was pretty much the most delicious thing I'd had in awhile! We also got the boneless shortribs, scallops, and rigatoni. Everyone thought their food was great with exception to the pasta being a little undercooked. We shared the creme brûlée for desert, which was a little disappointing since I'm a big fan of a think sugar crust on mine, and theirs was skimpy. Our server was Sarah and she was delightful!! Overall great time!"

  • "We had a very nice experience for dinner before the theater. We were caught in traffic and 1/2 hour late - we called to alert them and it was no problem. Noise level was refreshingly nice and low. Restaurant was about half full from 6:30 to 7:30 that night. Outstanding service and quite good food and value. Very convenient location on South Broad near the theaters and the Kimmel"

  • "The waiter was very close to being intoxicated and proceeded to drink with the patrons at the bar during the course of our meal. The food was so-so, nothing too exciting. We had two appetizers and two different meals and it was all just okay. Service was okay despite the drunken waiter and he was well educated on the wine list. The restaurant was empty at 7pm with only 4 tables filled and 3 groups at the bar. There are many other wonderful places to eat in Philly that I wouldn't bother going back to Bliss"

  • "I've had my share of good food and hardly any on the plate, but this one took the plate because it was incredibly expensive. The food wasn't bad but after a few appetizers and dinner we were still quite hungry. My guest and I are still trying to figure out why this place was so over the top in food pricing, the best deal is a $5 beer and a $10 martini that taste like cough syrup. It's better places to go to in Philly."

  • "Saturday pre-concert dinner was mostly pleasant at our second floor table above the entryway. For starters, the three fried oysters were very nice, medium sized and not overly breaded; the grilled baby octopus was a little chewey. They were out of the pocono trout dish we both wanted, so we settled for porcini dusted scallops, which were perfectly cooked, served with beluga lentils and grilled asparagus. For dessert we ordered cappuccino, which arrived hot enough to burn the mouth, and espresso. Our waiter was attentive but sometimes hard to understand, and was unaware of the bar's single malt Scotch offerings. As our meal was ending, the ambience became noisy because of some boisterous walk-ins hoping to be seated without a reservation."

  • "Prompt efficient service highlight this yummy food at the best location for theater, orchestra and shopping too."
    Dined on 4/13/2014
  • "We visited here prior to going to the Academy of Music for a show. The owner was funny and personable. The staff was nice but a little overwhelmed. I think it was unusually busy for lunch that day because of Phantom of the Opera playing. I'd definitely go again because the food was good."

  • "Outstanding lamb porterhouse and trout!!! Highly recommend before a show for quality food and convenient location!"

  • "Food was flavorful, but pasta was a bit hard and I don't think it was worth the money overall."

  • "The last visit to Bliss left something to be desired. On a Monday night, only one waitress worked the entire restaurant. She was apologizing to each table thanking them for being understanding for not paying as much attention to them as she would have liked. She was also the bartender. She did have assistance from a bus boy and from the receptionist at the front of the house. The food was hit or miss. The octopus appetizer was nicely done and presented as were the scallops which were served with a variety of greens. The strip steak, on the other hand, although nicely seasoned, was very difficult to chew and not at all enjoyable. Other visits to this popular restaurant have been much more satisfying."

  • "We had not been to Bliss in a number of years, but chose to stop in for an early dinner after a matinee at the Kimmel Center. It was a cold and rainy day so we appreciated how convenient Bliss is to the Arts District, and the good parking nearby. The waitress was highly mannered and a bit intrusive with her recommendations, but she was efficient. The salad was underdressed, and the short ribs were dry and nearly tasteless. We have been trying some of the newer BYOB restaurants in the 10 block area around Kimmel Center, and these were a far better dining experience in spite of being smaller, more crowded venues."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, especially the goat cheese crostini and the lamb entree. Perfect for a quiet conversation where everyone could hear one another without shouting."
