I've traditionally relied on Bliss for tasty, convenient dinner fare before performances on Broad Street -- they clearly understand and reliably fulfill their pre-concert mission! -- and I've thought it to be under-appreciated, perhaps because decor (ocean photo-mural) is tired and uninspired. They evidently have a new chef (with venerable local credentials) but even before his debut, I'd found Bliss a woefully under-appreciated lunch spot -- quiet, hospitable, and well-located, serving nicely prepared food. It's therefore with some trepidation that I flag it, based on a mix of civic generosity and support for a venue that deserves more attention than it seems to get, given the location, kitchen, nice lunch menu, and will to please.

With a new chef in the kitchen we were exposed to a new and totally exciting new menu. From appetizers to desert, everything was excellent in taste and presentation. The sushi tuna roll which was flash fried was fresh, moist and had a most satisfying taste. My fennel salad was crisp and crunchy, with a complimentary vinaigrette dressing. The hangar steak was cooked just right with a poblano pepper chorizo rice stuffing. To top everything off our waitperson had the best tableside manner we have seen in a long time. Definitely a place to visit again soon.

We expect a restaurant to do a better job than we can do at home. When a fish is to be prepared medium rare, it should not come out medium; the greens should not be served if they are no longer crisp; and flavors should be crisp, not bland. Also, servers should not seek to be your good friends unless they actually are. The restaurant should not rely on its location for its business; it should rely on its food and service.

We were looking for a new option near the Kimmel Center and saw Bliss online. Had a very delicious meal from appetizer and salad through to the entree and dessert. My one comment would be it seemed like all the serving staff was hurrying everywhere which honestly was a little stressful. We were on the 2nd floor and staff would continually run, not walk up the stairs. It was not a huge space so it was a little distracting. Not enough to keep us from coming back though.

There are so many great restaurants to choose from in downtown Philly, and this is definitely one of them. Our meal was wonderful and our waiter Kevin lived up to his great rating from other customers. He was spot on with his choices of the food he suggested. It was fabulous. He made the experience that much better too. He was energetic, very knowledgeable, and a great asset to Bliss. It was a beautiful night so we sat outside. I would recommend this place to anyone.

  • OK, but a Restaurant Week Miss

Service was fantastic. Staff is very attentive. But once again, a restaurant has missed the mark on the purpose of Restaurant Week. I thought this would be a great opportunity to try a new restaurant that I could add to my "gems list", but I walked away thinking the food was mediocre. Both the fish courses were overcooked and the wilted salad greens were resting in the kitchen too long and were served soggy. The peanut-bread pudding dessert was creative, but it was served too dry and needed a cream or caramel topping to accompany the peanut butter accents. Maybe their regular food outside of Restaurant Week is better?? No immediate plans to return.

Our server, Kevin, was fantastic. I was bummed because the restaurant I had planned to book for a friends birthday was full, but Kevin made our experience wonderful. He was knowledgeable, personable, and very quick (while encouraging us to dine). The food wasn't anything outrageously wonderful, but the service and atmosphere was great. When I return, I will be sure to ask for Kevin!

Took a guest from England to Bliss for lunch and am so glad I did! The staff was great - greeted enthusiastically at the door, our server was very attentive. The food was really good - have to say I think it has gotten better. I was there in the past and not all that impressed, but walked away from this lunch saying - "wow, that was really good! I think I will try it again for dinner also".... It looks like they are making a determined effort at improving and it's working. Can't wait to go back.

Our evening was very nice. There is good food and very nice service. There are "details" that have been overlooked. Stalky ends on the overdone asparagus, but wonderfully done scallops. Hard as rock sugar packets, but excellent hazelnut gelato. Prices a bit over the value received. Overall, we enjoyed our evening; however, there are many other excellent restaurants in town.

My husband and I went for lunch as we both thought it was a broader range of items to pick from. We both had delicious salads and an entree his the fish and I the burger. Both were excellent. The service was outstanding and very accommodating as I have numerous food allergies. I would definitely go back here for a lunch and possibly a happy hour drink being located off broad street it also made for a great people watching spot.

Our first time to Bliss was a delight. Great location on Broad St with open seating on the sidewalk. The grilled octopus was superb. Our daughter chose the veal stuffed tortellini. ..delish! and my wife ordered the lamb porterhouse which was tender and perfectly seasoned. My Halibut and fennel was absolutely delicious. Solid choice of cocktails and excellent service made for a very enjoyable dining experience. We look forward to trying Bliss again!

The evening stated over good. The service was good but the menu was limited. I've been several times in the past and it was not up to my previous expectations. There were 3 of us and 1 of us chose to order from the prix fix menu 38 for 3 courses. 2 ordered off the standard menu. We chose the restaurant in order to use the Living Social Voucher. The manager refused to allow us to use voucher for 60 even though the total amount of food from the standard menu was well over 110. The server told us to come back another time. The voucher expires in 2 weeks. If I do it will be to use the voucher but I will never come back after that. We are not local and attended a show and chose this restaurant for afterwards. I can't say how disappointed I was.

Had dinner here - seated outside - before going to see "Book of Mormon". We had a friendly welcome from the owner, and were give choice of inside or outside seating. As it was a beautiful evening in Philly, sat outside. Had really well-mixed cocktails (vodka gimlet and old fashiond) and then a wonderful dinner, with three of us ordining off the prix fixe menu and one al a carte. All meals were superb. Best of all is we had Kevin for our server - funny, responsive, with great advice on food and wine. Will be back!

I have walked past this restaurant a million times but never tried it as it looked so small and unassuming. Boy were we amazed! It was a Friday night and everyone was out of town so there were no crowds in the city. We were seated at a prime table next to a wall of open, glass doors and felt like we were dining outdoors. The seats were fantastic especially with the great weather we were having that evening. The food was fabulous! We both ordered salmon from the prix fixe menu, which was reasonably priced. The salmon was moist and delish! The ginger ice cream was also surprisingly better than we expected. The service was great too! As we left the restaurant we were telling people on the sidewalk that they should eat there !!

We were the only ones there for the second week in a row. Very limited menu and highly overpriced, for example, 32 for scallops ... C'mon. Waiter had awful body odor and hardly spoke English. Service staff went out out of their way to help make dinner nice, however and food we pretty good despite terribly small portions. We will not be going back. Very disappointing and I will be surprised if this place is even operating in a year.

We recently had dinner at Bliss to celebrate our daughter's birthday. We picked the restaurant primarily for location. She attends University of the Arts which is nearby. Bliss is also convenient to the Academy of Music and many of Philly's theaters. Parking was easy, right next door. We arrived early and went to the bar for a drink and appetizer. We wound up eating there as well. The bartender was fabulous. She was attentive and knowledgeable about their wines. We had a delicious flatbread and fabulous South African Savignon Blanc. Our entrees were also delicious. We had the trout, steak and short ribs. Each was cooked perfectly, the preparations were excellent and the portions were ample.

I had heard a few good reviews of Bliss and was anxious to take my out of town clients there for dinner. It was dismal, dimly lit, and the food was tasteless, especially for the price point. The restaurant was completely empty except for one other patron at the bar, surprising for a 7pm on a Tuesday, when reservations at nearby restaurants were unavailable. After eating our dinner, we understood why no one was there. It was extremely mediocre and we will never go the Bliss again. The only bright spot was our very sweet waiter.

Bliss was once our favorite Philly pre-show dining spot, but it had been a few years since we'd visited. Wow, what a difference a few years makes! It was a busy night, but that doesn't excuse the dry and flavorless dishes we were served. The new menu didn't seem terribly creative, either. It also took nearly an hour to be served our food (although to be fair, we were 15 minutes late for our reservation). Maybe if the menu improves, we'll give Bliss another shot someday, but I promise we will be dining elsewhere for the rest of the 2014 show season.
