A word from Blaue Gans
Blaue Gans meaning "blue goose" is Chef Gutenbrunner's reproduction of an authentic Austrian "Wirtshaus" in his own Tribeca neighborhood. Blaue Gans serves seasonal authentic Austro-German dishes with wonderful beers and wines. The perfect neighborhood spot for friends and families.

My friends and I had a very
pleasurable dining experience last Saturday nite. The food was outstanding as was the service and the bar selections. We will be going back regularly. I offer one item of note - it is loud - not in the sense of too many persons jammed to close - the layout is such that one not worry as there is plenty of elbow room. It is a byproduct the architectural design - high ceilings/hard walls. If you are going with a group it's going to be difficult to converse among persons other than those close to you. That said, it's definitely a keeper."

The food was delicious and, when
we spoke to the wonderful young German-American hostess about not being able to try Chef Gutenbrunner's Café Sabarsky, she was kind enough to call over to the café and make reservations for us a few hours later so that we could try desserts and coffee there. It was wonderful! We WILL go back when we have the chance, and we look forward to trying The Upholstery Store and Wallsé, the chef's other restaurants in NYC."

My guests specifically wanted a
"German" venue, and I wanted somewhere close to their downtown hotel. This spot met both needs admirably."

I met someone on a recent flight
who told me that she had the most wonderful brunch at Blaue Gans after the Easter parade in NY last year. I looked up the menu on line and decided to make sure that I made it there with my husband on a trip we were planning to NY city. We ended up meeting a friend of mine who lives in Manhattan for brunch on a recent Sunday. The atmosphere felt very European, clean but kind of funky with lots of eye candy in the form of European art and performance posters perfectly arrayed on the walls. Our service was prompt and very professional and there was an air of ease and happiness in the space that made it very pleasant. Our food was very fresh and good and the drinks were wonderful. I would go again for sure!"

We were very pleased with our
dinner. The meal exceeded expectations, and the choices were so attractive we want to go back to try other dishes. Very nice Austrian wine selection, excellent beers. The charcuterie platter was excellent and plentiful, chestnut soup and calf's liver most enjoyable. Good service and friendly unpretentious atmosphere. Having been to Austria this is an authentic slice of it in NYC."

I have been coming to the Blaue
Gans regularly ever since it opened, I celebrated with my family, brought visitors from out of town, hosted client dinners, etc. But this weekend was an altogether different and not so great experience. Sneakily the sommelier tried to turn our order of a bottle of wine into a tasting event, without ever telling us that this is 12 dollars a glass. He offered to taste saying that they had an event ealier, that there where bottles open, It sounded like a treat, only to find 48 dollard added to our tab (on top of the bottle we had initially ordered). Food wasn`t up to standard either. Veal Schnitzel was veiny, hard to cut, too thick. No pickles on the charcuterie....pasty kaiserschmarrn....I am disapointed!"

There were 6 of us for lunch and
we were treated really well by the waiter. The food was good but the portion sizes were on the small side. Most of us drank cocktails and they were also very good but not great. All in all, it was an excellent restaurant for a lunchtime gathering."
Dined on 2/11/2014
The food was excellent, as we
followed our server's recommendations. His suggestion for a paired wine was also excellent."
Dined on 2/1/2014
And spätzle, lots and lots of
spätzle. Blaue Gans is something from another world - the movie poster wall treatments in the dining room, the high curved ceilings, the slight accents on the staff - dinner here transports you. We thoroughly enjoyed their selection of German and Austrian wines, the staff was knowledgable and informative, and dinner was greatly affordable. I did overeat. But I loved every minute of it."
Dined on 2/1/2014
Really good menu. My dining
companions and I shared the entrees. The schnitzel was really well made and was extremely tasty; the speatzle with emmenthaler cheese was excellent and the weisswurst with pretzel and delicious mustard was also excellent. We had the pancakes with berries, pineapple and maple syrup for dessert. Wonderful. The service was attentive. The walls of the restaurant are covered with posters for art shows, plays, books, etc. You should go."

I always feel like I am off the
beaten track in Vienna when I come here."
Dined on 1/19/2014
Overall a nice place, just a bit
off the beaten path if you're not already downtown. I would eat there again."
Dined on 1/12/2014
We had a lovely meal at Blaue Gans
where the emphasis Is on authentic Austrian food and drink. The entrees were Uniformly delicious, the wine list small but well chosen, And the dessert we shared memorable. Our server was solicitous without being overly familiar, in the European style, which I prefer. The only downside is the lighting/wish it were a tad cozier. That being said, I'd go back tomorrow! Also, slightly pricey-but It is Manhattan"
Dined on 1/10/2014
Everything was delicious and well
prepared. Service was excellent in spite of the busy night with only one waiter for the entire place on New Years eve. The chef was also there to greet the guests and shake everyone's hand towards the end of the evening. I had a great time and will definitely recommend to others."

There aren't many authentic
Austrian/German restaurants in the U.S. anywhere. You will have found one in Blaue Gans. Take it from a very demanding German. This place comes as close to Austria- Germany as one can get here in the Good Ol' Us of A."

My sister and seven-year-old niece
were in town and we had an early dinner (6 pm) at Blaue Gans. The hostess and servers were delightfully welcoming and attentive, the room was warm and comforting on a very cold night, and the food was delicious (I could eat the Jager Schnitzel every day, and my sister's Wiener Schnitzel looked fantastic). My notoriously picky niece ate up her "kinderschnitzel" and ice cream and enjoyed the company of the (very tolerant) hostess when she wanted to go look at the snow through the front window. I will be back -- I want to try the whole menu!"

We had dinner before the New Year
festivities started at 10pm. The restaurant was decorated nicely and the wait staff had such a great attitude. The food came out quickly, the martini was iced on top just the way I like it and the food was hot and very good. Great job to all that work at the restaurant."
Dined on 12/31/2013
We chose Blaue Gans for our
Christmas Day dinner in the city because they offered goose as a holiday special. Unfortunatly, the goose was a disappointmnt. The meat was tough and appeared to have been carved with a weed-wacker. I have had goose before, much better than this. That said, the rest of the meal was lovely, including the best red caabbage I've ever had."
Dined on 12/25/2013
The entrees were overcooked. And
the dessert souffle, Salzburger Nockerl, was runny, A tell-tale sign that it was nowhere near cooked .No one from the restaurant seemed to care. We will not be returning."
Dined on 12/24/2013
We - family of 4, including 2
teenagers - had Christmas dinner here yesterday. Fantastic food, beautifully served, great ambience. The kitchen accommodated our newly-vegetarian daughter who couldn't eat any of the fixed menu. A great experience and we'll go again."

The restaurant is much better now
that Walter, who ran Danube for years, is working as maitre'd."
Dined on 12/21/2013
This is a great place for gourmet
Austrian/German cuisine. The beer selection is good too."
Dined on 12/5/2013
This is a neighborhood restaurant
for us, we've been here often, and the food is consistently excellent. It can get noisy, if the big center table is full, but not insanely so. Last Sunday night it was very quiet, and we sat and talked for 4 hours. I often get the schnitzel, though I've had the goulash and other dishes too, and they are of a consistently high standard. And I strongly recommend the apple strudel, which is perfect! Service can be spotty, but last night was very good. It's pricey but good quality and I never feel ripped off."
Dined on 12/1/2013
We were disappointed to find that
the childrens menu was gone and that the regular menu lost some of its lighter fare. If you love Austrian beer, a vibrant bar scene and heavy food then this is a great place for you"
Dined on 12/1/2013
We thoroughly enjoyed eating at
the Blaue Gans....the ambience is outstanding, the food delicious and the service very attentative and friendly. 100% recommendable"
Dined on 11/28/2013
Four of us met up for lunch and
found the prix-fixe menu to be a great value. The food was fresh and delicious -- we had a variety of dishes and everything was flavorful. I would just not get the sirloin again -- the cut was grisly, and I think they should substitute another cut of beef -- but the potatoes and red cabbage that came with it were great. The desserts -- Sacher torte and apple strudel -- quickly disappeared. Service was attentive and very helpful in describing the menu. We're all ready to go back!"

First time at Blaue Gans Thursday
evening, and we felt its best days had already past. I'm a big fan of mitteleuropa cuisine, and the wiener schnitzel in particular is for me an accurate barometer of the restaurant's culinary level overall. I felt it was just passably good, the veal not pounded thinly enough, the crust not a little soggy as though it hadn't been prepared a la minute. Smoked trout appetizer was good but not transcending. And the service was efficient, but somewhat distant and disinterested. Having enjoyed Wallse in the past, we three were rather disappointed with the Blaue Gans experience."
Dined on 11/7/2013
I used to love Blaue Gans, way
back when it just opened, and for a couple years after that. Came here recently and the food was bland, lukewarm, service was super spotty (although apologetic)...just felt tired, lackluster, not what it used to be."
Dined on 8/20/2013
My husband and I have been there
many times over the years. They still have the best Wiener schnitzel in town, and we went back on Saturday specifically for them. The food was good. The service is just meh. The waitress was polite but weirdly distant - very unfit for the vibe of the restaurant. Since we had ordered too much, we asked **all** of our food to be boxed. We go home and realized he only boxed the wiener schnizel and the side spätzle but NO potato salad or the lingonberries sauce! Next time I'll have to specifically instruct, I guess. We'd still go back there. I wish they took down the screen TV above the bar. It really cheapens the place."
Dined on 11/2/2013
Good to very good restaurant. Some
of the German dishes while very do not appear to correspond exactly to classical German cuisine."
Dined on 11/3/2013
Blaue Gans is one of our favorite
restaurants in the neighborhood. This was the first time we tried their brunch/lunch. We've always gone there for dinner. Dinner is excellent and lunch was too! The service is always superb and friendly."
Dined on 10/26/2013
Good, authentic Austrian food.
Decent, but not fantastic service. Cute bistro-ish atmosphere, quieter at lunch time."
Dined on 10/24/2013
Great food, impressive menu
selections ... delicious. We were not impressed the first couple of times we ate here, but that was a while ago. Something changed and now everything we ate was fabulous. The ham and liptauer cheese appetizer was wonderful -- great ham and probably the best liptauer cheese we've eaten. Portions are large. Lots on the menu we have yet to try, so we'll be back!"
Dined on 10/17/2013
Best snitzel in the world outside
of Vienna but that is where the Cheff is from!! Service and food were excellent we were constantly checked on for our needs , beer and wine lists exceptional."
Dined on 10/18/2013
Sunday evening of Columbus Day
weekend and the service is lagging. Cloth napkins must not have been delivered, so the tables are set with those chintzy synthetic paper ones. Unfortunately, though the place isn't busy, the wait staff is not up to usual level of good service. Not paying attention to and at times ignoring the few tables of diners, slow to respond to empty water glasses and bottles on tables, etc. Thankfully, as I was entertaining five guests, including one from Vienna (!), the kitchen staff was up to snuff.....the food was as good as ever."
Dined on 10/14/2013
Blaue Gans is one of our favorite
spots in our neighborhood, we love their authentic German food and beers, especially during Oktoberfest. The last couple of times we've visited the service has been very hit or miss, however. Most recently we witnessed the manager sitting down to share a drink w/ a table of friends during the Friday dinner hours, meanwhile our server was MIA while we waited nearly 20min for our check! Blaue Gans' food is good enough we'll return again, but the management needs to tune in and be present to ensure consistency in service."
Dined on 10/12/2013
The food was good. The service was
the worst I have experienced in the last 10 years of frequent dining in the City. Inattentive, long delays. Very disappointing."
Dined on 9/15/2013
Everyone was very nice when I
arrived soaking wet from a sudden storm, offering handfuls of napkins to use as towels. The Austrian food was modestly good, though not as good as Seasonal's. I have lived in Vienna, so I love Austrian food and try out every place that serves it. But the atmosphere was overpoweringly noisy, making conversation next to impossible. Blaue Gans is not really a restaurant but an oversize bar with booming music reverberating from wall to wall. Austrians like to converse while they eat; perhaps Americans like to feel excited. In any case, at Blaue Gans the food was not fantastic enough to compensate for the absence of Gemütlichkeit."
Dined on 9/13/2013
It's good to know that there is
something different out there, sure French food is great so is American and Japanese. But when you are looking for something a little left of field this is the place to come to. The staff are friendly, the food is spot on and the ambience is perfect if you are looking for something fun and upbeat."
Dined on 9/8/2013
Delicious as always. I was a
little surprised at the spacey service. For the first time in my experience at Blaue Gans, I experienced shoddy service. My appetizer was delivered a good 15 minutes after the rest of my party's. One of our desserts never appeared and the entrees arrived in a strangely staggered way. I am guessing it's just due to a slow night and a lack of attentiveness."
