Diner Reviews
  • "Blackthorne is kind of hidden, we drove around the block a couple of times before we could find it. When we did arrive, the front of it was a bit dark, and we didn't know what we were getting into. Boy were we surprised! The service was great, the food was delicious, and we decided we were going to come back soon. "

  • "My only complaint was the waiter seemed to rush us. Otherwise, great place. Music on the rooftop wonderful!"

  • "Great atmosphere was there for lunch we sat at a high top upstairs there was a blonde hair waitress that was on top of her job. The food was ok. We had a couple of glasses of wine so the overall experience was great."

  • "We were recently introduced to Blackthorne by family members, and have already returned there with friends. The ambience is warm and welcoming, and the noise level is conversation friendly. The food and service were excellent both times. We will definitely return again."

  • "Blackthorne is one of those good-to-go-anytime restaurants. While not in my short list of memorable eateries (a very short list) my wife and I agree that it is on the short list of restaurants when the question is, "Where do we want to go out for dinner?""

  • "Everything from the decor and aesthetics to the service and food were "good", but nothing more. With just a little focus on each aspect, this could be a great South Charlotte spot!"

  • "The food was very good. Although I was quite disappointed that bread pudding was taken off the desert menu. Always a favorite."

  • "food here is always great, but they almost always do have the draft beer that they advertise this time the service was not good waiter was not attentive"

  • "Our first time and really enjoyed ourselves. Warm welcome and friendly bar for cocktails before dinner. Food was great and service wonderful. We'll be back."

  • "Spinach salad was just a bowl of spinach leaves, and a couple of almond pieces. The $9 per half glass of house wine was awful. My discount coupon was incorrectly subtracted (instead of a free entree, $15 was subtracted), which I discovered at home. The portions were small. We were surprised, that this place is still open with all the good restaurants in the area. The bar area had a crowd, and we were one of two tables filled in the restaurant."

  • "We had a an excellent Valentine Dinner one day after the actual Valentine day and liked it a lot! A nice matching wine was recommended. The service could have been a little bit more attentive..."

  • "We had very good meals at this restaurant this past Sunday night. We wanted to eat a little early, so I asked for a 6:30 reservation. We were told we could have 6 or 7:30, so chose 6. When we arrived there were only three other occupied tables, and when we left at about 7:45, there were only two other occupied tables. The rest of the tables were empty the whole time. So why we could not be seated at 6:30 is a puzzle. Even with so few patrons, the waiter was quite inattentive, not bringing drinks for some time, forgetting steak knives, and not refilling water. The food was great, but service was not, and with so few diners, one would wonder about the future of the restaurant."

  • "I had the scallops entree and the deviled eggs. Both tasted delicious. I especially enjoyed the small carmelized bacon on top of my deviled eggs. The scallop entree came with three individual scallops, with crab cakes placed beneath them. They were both excellant. My roommie had the filet mignon, while it was good, it was not the best she has ever had."

  • "The recipes were all made up by the chef and were delicious but different from you would normally get at an American restaurant. It was pretty loud and expensive."

  • "Let me preface this critique with a couple of comments. Since it was "Charlotte Restaurant Week" , the restaurant may have had a pre-prepared type of menu to handle a larger than usual group of diners. Also, I'm not one to return food or complain if not to my liking. Tonight's dinner & service however requires that I make several comments. 1. The lobster bisque soup had basically no lobster meat in it & the liquid tasted burnt. Mgmt. did replace with a salad when requested. 2. The Arugula salad was quite good & served cold as it should be. 3. The Cod was overcooked & lacked texture. 4.The Bison short ribs were flavorful but the portion size wouldn't satisfy a hummingbird. The side dish was about a spoonful & was lukewarm at best."

  • "I was initially hesitant when I arrived because there was only 2 tables of people and it's restaurant week. Hits: nice decor and ambiance, Waiter friendly and knowledgeable Warm goat cheese salad was amazing! Chocolate molten cake was delicious with a nice surprise of homemade mint ice cream with fresh mint yum Misses: wine list left much to be desired...mostly full of California wine, but the fact that 2 nights a week are half price bottles was great.Cornbread at start of meal was so sugary it felt like I was eating a piece of cake before dinner Lobster bisque was nothing to write home about The most disappointing part was the scallop and shrimp creme brûlée. It had almost no flavor, and the texture was so odd I can't even explain it"

  • "Great location / ambience. Food portions small but very good. Reasonable wine prices which is important for us! Service was excellent."

  • "We participated in the Queen City Restaurant Week. It was mid-week and I took my business team out for dinner. It was a great experience. The food was really well prepared. There was live music in another part of the restaurant that drifted into the dining area."
    Dined on 1/22/2014
  • "Enjoyed the atmosphere and the service was excellent. Could have used some more food as I thought the Queen's Fest was a little skimpy on the portions. But it is probably a better thing that I did not eat too much."

  • "Not worth the price fixed dinner. Except for the non-tomato salad, portions too small, especially the cheese plate dessert. Cheeses slices so thin you could see through them. Too noisy, poor acoustics."

  • "We went for restaurant week, my wife ordered off that menu and she really enjoyed it. I ordered off the regular menu and had the lamb. It was awesome! I am so happy to have learned we have a little neighborhood great restaurant now. We are both glad we went and found Blackthorne."

  • "First time here. Ordered from the Queen's Feast menu. Huge tasty salads to start that included fried goat cheese. We had the Atlantic sole and the Bison short rib. Both were done very well. The sole was accompanied by tempura asparagus that was delicious. The Bison (first time I had this, a bit gamey, but good) included a very creamy polenta. Our meals were topped off with a molten chocolate cake and creme brulee. Every course was excellent. Our server did a fine job as well. We definitely will be back."

  • "We arrived at 5 pm on a Saturday during restaurant week in January. No one was in the dining room! Yikes! The dining room was busier by the time we left. Service was good; our waiter answered questions about the menu. We learned Blackthorne has a new chef as of 5 months ago so the menu is new. We did not use the Queen's Feast menu. The appetizer of fried green tomatoes was tasty. Our entrees were filet and salmon. The filet had a bacon toping which gave it just a hint of bacon flavor. The filet was cooked perfectly. The salmon was good but a bit dry. Blackthorne has a roof top bar which is very popular when the weather is warm. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed."

  • "My disappointing dining experience started by being placed near the kitchen door when we had an early dinner reservation (5:45) and there were literally a dozen or more empty booths and tables all around us. My appetizer, lobster bisque, had a slick oily taste like gravy. My entry, low country shrimp, was schizophrenic. It shrimp and grits as you would expect, but also had bay scallops and Italian sausage. The bar was very loud and close to the dining area. Our server was pretty and polite, however, the hostess demonstrated a real lack of class and training by commenting on how well I cleaned my desert plate. This was my first and last visit to this restaurant. If you really appreciate a great meal in warm atmosphere, go somewhere else."

  • "Looking for new local restaurant for relaxing couples dinner we found Blackthorn and based on reviews reserved and early dinner seating. Atmosphere is quiet and comfortable, tables not on top of each other. Bar section is blocked off from the main dining area which is a plus as well for ambience. Menu was advertised as farm to table and selection was varried and interesting. Food was very good and service excellent. Fairly priced including corkage of $15 which is fine. We'll be back."

  • "Danny was our server and he did an excellent job. We were only one of three tables at noon on Sunday for Brunch. He said Saturday and Sunday's are slow. Obviously Dinner and weekday lunches are busier. Some large office buildings are close by so I surmised that lunch during the week was peak time. My wife's Eggs Benedict Classic was very good and the side of grits was also very good. I had a make your own omelet and it was OK but nothing special. The home fries were excellent as a side. I asked for bread, he said he could get me corn muffins, came back in a minute and said they were in the oven. When served the flat muffins were obviously in the "microwave" oven and when served were barely warm---not out of a hot oven baking fresh."

  • "Had a very pleasant experience at Blackthorne Restaurant. There were 3 in our party; having a holiday lunch get-together. The place was very clean and inviting. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server was pleasant. I will say it took a while for her to take our order; she was more attentive after that. Our meals were good portions and tasty. The soup of the day was delicious; as well as my spinach salad. My friends enjoyed their meals, too. Would certainly go back for lunch or dinner."

  • "It was the first time dining with Blackthorne for both my friend and me. The restaurant is very attractive. We were both pleased with the service, atmosphere and our food. We were a bit surprised with what we considered a rather limited menu - for their upscale reputation, location and appearance. We were there for lunch, though. May be different at dinner. (???) We do hope to give it a try for dinner - soon."

  • "Black Thorn was recommended to us by friend. I was somewhat surprised by the limited menu and thought the prices were just a little high. Overall the evening was fun and I have to say the service was wonderful. Just enough attention without hovering. I would probably go back again but it would have to be a special occasion, not just a simple evening out."
