Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful table in the back room which allowed a party of seven to carry on a conversation and hear one another. [I had asked when making our reservation if we could sit in a quieter place in the restaurant, and that request was honored.] We most appreciated the flexible menu: you can match fish to side dishes that you prefer. The halibut was delicious. Our service was fabulous. "

  • "I knew I was in for a treat when I walked into a packed house on a Tuesday night. They have a great seafood menu with LOTS of nightly specials and will customize anything for you. I ended up choosing the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. I would like to compliment the chef for giving me such a broad spectrum of different flavors theoughout the meal. One employee went out of his way to make sure I got to try a special fish I requested. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. I spoke with several different employees who were all candid with their opinions on the menu. My only disappointment was the 2 "strongest" courses in my opinion were course 5 and 6. I probably should have ordered the 5 course tasting menu."

  • "We went to BlackSalt for our work holiday party (8 of us). We all like seafood, and everyone loved their dishes! We got oysters from Orleans, and somehere in Mass. and they were delicious!! Highly recommend them. I had the seafood stew and I couldn't how much seafood there was! It was delicious and I couldn't finish it all. I hope to go back again soon."

  • "There was a group in the middle of the room which made the room quite loud. But the food was excellent."

  • "The Black Salt Restaurant is very good (I wouldn't say great) and the food and service were good (I wouldn't use "very"). It is worth visiting and I would probably go back again. The fish was delectable (not overly done with respect to seasoning and preparation) although I was not able to get Arctic Char when I went. My suggestion to the restaurant is to present diners with black salt (I found it sold online) to use as a condiment or to purchase as a souvenir."

  • "Excellent brunch experience. My friend and I each had a delicious bloody mary to start, an order of beignets, and BlackSalt's version of eggs benedict, served with a spicy hollandaise, rock shrimp and crab meat. Yum!"

  • "We have dined all over DC, and this is our new #1 spot. We have now gone twice, and both were incredible. For the initial visit, we walked in early on a weekend ~ 6:30 and were lucky enough to be seated at a first come first serve bar table. The service was impeccable as they walked us through the menu and worked seamlessly as a team. For the second visit we went the reservation route and were given a quiet romantic table in the back. On both occasions, the food was prepared, seasoned, and cooked perfectly including the halibut, black cod, whole fish; and appetizers of scallops, butterfish, and tuna. A former Manager/GM of VA/DC/MD Morton's, now Black Salt manager completed the experience (Morton's best customer facing talent IMO)."

  • "Got the 5 course tasting menu. "Tastes" they were not...more like good size portions and often 2 on a plate so added up to a lot of great tasting food."

  • "My husband and I came here for dinner with family that was visiting from out of town. The food (and the presentation!) was amazing, and the service was really spectactular. Will definitely go back."

  • "This restaurant is magnificent. The food is absolutely delicious, fresh and simply magnificent. The back dining room is intimate and beautiful."

  • "This was an excellent place to take a "foodie" from LA. The three different seafood dishes that were ordered were outstanding. The clam chowder was excellent. The ambiance of the "back room" was quiet and refined."

  • "We had a great time at BlackSalt celebrating the birthday of my 13-year old daughter. From beginning to end, the staff made her feel special - from the Happy 13th Birthday menu items, to each of the waitstaff giving their well-wishes, to the dessert after a wonderful meal, we had a lovely time. The only (small) drawback was that my daughter was not able to have her favorite burger for dinner, but the boulliabaise, the mussels and the clams all made up for it! Many thanks!"

  • "It might have just been my impeccable date, but this was a truly wonderful dining experience. The servers were knowledgeable and attentive, our food was outstanding. It's expensive, but well worth it for a special occasion. Two of us shared the following items and were satisfied: Oysters Rockefeller - decadent, and hearty for a small appetizer Prince Edward Island Mussels with spicy chorizo in a lovely tomato broth - the servers split into two portions so we could have separate bowls, there was easily 1lb of mussels between us. Atlantic Day Boat Scallops with gnocchi, mattaike mushrooms, and parsnip puree - fantastic marriage of flavors and texture, small portion though Wood grilled Swordfish - all components worked really well together!"

  • "I live in the neighborhood and go to Black Salt often. It has also been terribly overpriced but the food and service have largely compensated. This time, the formula didn't work. My meal (pasta special with grilled salmon) was average and the service was appalling. I took special out of town guests who love seafood and I was embarrassed at the service. I won't return"

  • "The problem at Blacksalt is the parking if you come before 6:30 p.m. THEN, you get the "tick tock" of being unable to be seated until the stroke of 5:30 p if you come early. If you are the first patrons of the night, DON'T seat people next to a wall. Good grief. Once we got past all this, the food is outstanding, the wines are delightful and once we got seated in the booth, we were able to catch up on the past four years."

  • "it is best if you can get a booth but you need at least 3 to make that happen. The booths are OK but the open area is really noisy. But the seafood makes it worth yelling to your dinner companion."

  • "One of the best fish restaurants in DC. Wonderful food and atmosphere. It is pricey, but the quality is worth it."

  • "I almost gave the chef's menu an "outstanding" rating. It was really very good, but we weren't as blown away as we were the last time we went to Black Salt and had the chef's menu, which set the bar really high. In fact we all agreed then that it was the best meal we'd EVER had. We look forward to getting the chef's menu menu again. We were were very happy that the dessert again included the cup of butterscotch and other goodies, as it is so delicious that we're surprised that it's legal. The dessert port that was paired with it was out of this world, too. We liked the refreshing white wine pairings and hope they will help usher in the spring finally. Thanks to the chef and the staff for a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Black Salt was fantastic. I asked to be seated in the back because of noise level and was given a table in their back room. The room was cozy and pretty quiet. We had a great table.I love to be able to go out with friends and not have to yell across the table. The menu selection is amazing. If you want to try fish this is the place. With their fish market out front, the possibilities are endless. We had the fried Ipswich clams. They were tender and fantastic. The oyster selection was really great too. All the fishes were prepared differently and were out of this world. We loved our experience at Black Salt. We will definitely go back there soon."

  • "Hadn't been in a coule years. Went for lunch and was very pleased. Went for dinner a week later and loved both the day Boat Scallops and the chef's preperation of Artic Char."

  • "We need to maintain this kind of enterprise! A fish market in the front, a bistro in the middle and a restaurant in the back! We went to the restaurant and it was a delight. The freshest ingredients on the Potomac, with inspired combination of flavors. The seafood in a coconut milk with ginger was divine and the grilled local fish well prepared and presented. The oysters were the freshest and with with a assorted choice. The service was very good. The wine list is inspiring. A Treat."

  • "I brought a professional colleague to the Black Salt for dinner. Besides the excellent food and wonderful ambiance, it was quiet enough to be able to talk without screaming!"

  • "We had one of the best meals we can recall in the area! The food was outstanding, and the adjacent market offers the diner a ton of options in terms of not only fish but preparation. One unexpected aspect to the evening is that there are 2 very different dining spaces, one being more quiet and a bit more formal. We were in the second, seated along a wall next to 2 unmarked doors, one of which an employee kept going in and out of with a key. By the end of our meal only one other table had been seated in this room. When we left through the more casual area, we noticed it was 3/4 full and quite lively, which made me wish we had sat there instead. All that aside, this is a restaurant not to miss!"

  • "Blacksalt is undoubtedly the best place in the area for fresh, well-prepared seafood. There is nothing boring on the menu. Fresh briny oysters and whole grilled Bronzino were wonderful. Always best to have reservations. It is a popular place"

  • "We ate here on Sunday - there were 5 of us and we were seated in the wine room, which was very nice. The oysters that we started with were outstanding. Our waiter seemed extremely irritated to have to be working. It was hard to flag him down and when we asked questions or asked for more wine, he was rude. I think he is new because I've never seen him there before, but what an attitude! This is unusual, because I've always had excellent service at this restaurant. The food was delicious, though."

  • "It was our first time in this restaurant. Our food expectations were high and fulfilled. The waiter was super nice with our kids and willing to attend any of our requests. The price of the food is in accordance the quality. The price of the beverages simply absurd: 6 dollars for chocolate milk? common..."

  • "The desserts are not on a par with the rest of the menu."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Our table of four all enjoyed our appetizers and entrees but were a bit jammed in terms of space. Waiters and other diners kept bumping into us as we ate and that took away from our ability to focus on our expertly prepared dishes and conversation at our table. In the future, if I were to return, I would ask for a booth or table on the side and not in the center of the dining room."

  • "Get the butterfish appetizer. Excellent appetizers, oysters, entrees, cocktails. Everything was cooked perfectly. If you like a good sear, eat hear. It's not cheap, but what is? Absolutely perfect presentation and preparation of all dishes. $11 per desert is a little pretentious. But that's not the point. Get the butterish appetizer."

  • "Great regular menu with specialty options changing nightly. Great service. Excellent wine list. And for the sweet tooth like myself, you could tell they had thought out the dessert menu. Went for a birthday where they printed my fiance's name on the menu and the waiter wished her a Happy Birthday when we sat down. Small things, but a nice touch. Will definitely return."

  • "I have been a fan for a number of years, but when took out-of-town friends who had heard me rave/build expectations around the bouillabaise, it came cold and with minimal broth. Took long time to be served (on week night) so they didn't feel like sending back - basically nibbled and left. Be prepared for the bouillabaisse to vary in quality. Appetizers were wonderful, though."

  • "Went for lunch with a friend. The service was generally very good indeed - one or two lapses. The ambience is fine - but a little dated by now, hasn't changed in years! Best of all, the food was fresh and the dishes exciting - skatewing with lentils and eggplant and fava beans and pear was original anda success. Ipswich clams as a starter were overly smothered in batter and over cooked - would have been better very lightly battered or sauced and cooked less time. Wine list has interesting by the glass entries - Sandhi chard from CA was nice and not over oaked. All round a nice outing!"
