  • "My wife and I ventured out to Blacksalt for her birthday. The thing that impressed her the most was the fish store right when you walk in. She had cod, I had halibut and both pieces of fish were fresh and done to perfection. We split a piece if coconut-banana-pineapple pie for dessert."

  • "My wife and I were able to get out for dinner for our anniversary. We noted in our reservation that this was our anniversary and the staff knew it from the moment we arrived. The food was fantastic. My wife went with the clam chowder (a bit non-traditional) and a nice seafood entrée. I had fried clams and an amazing dish (tuna over a pork shoulder in a mole). The food was perfect and tastes were great so we decided to skip dessert and let those flavors linger. I would highly recommend this."

  • "I am a self proclaimed foodie and I found myself disappointed with the restaurant. First of all the prices are very very high- for 2 people we spent $160 including tip. That being said my fiance and I split an appetizer which was an heirloom tomato salad and that was delicious. My fiance got the whole fish branzino which was good- but they didn't filet it for you and was only served on top of some lima bean salad. For $38 you expect a little more with your fish then just some beans. I had the steak - which yes this is a fish restaurant but I was really in the mood for a nice steak. It turned out being very tough the sauce was overly peppery- and it was very small for $38. The best part was my cocktail which had honey distilled gin!"

  • "I ordered some oysters to start which were just wonderful, and had a Mahi Mahi special. It was cooked to perfection with very nice accompaniments. I had wanted to try this Blacks" restaurant for a long time and it did not disappoint. I am going back soon. Only one issue and that it is noisy..but all restaurants are like that now."

  • "If you love fish and seafood and are looking for a sophisticated 'sea to table' experience then BlackSalt is your place. With a modern decor always buzzing with people, BlackSalt offers a menu with many surprises on the menu to tempt you: grilled peaches, arugula and mozzarella; a crudo preparation much like a ceviche and long list of fresh oysters. I came in thinking I'd order the bouillabaisse---one of the best in town here---but was too tempted by the specials to stick to that choice. And, if there's someone in your party who's not fond of fish, they even have a few delicious alternatives. One of my 'go to' places for a great meal with friends."

  • "While we thoroughly enjoyed the food and our server, they didn't remember that I had specifically stated on the Open Table reservation form that this was a birthday lunch. It wasn't until the end when I told our waitress (and we had our dessert) that it was my friends birthday. She said we should have said something, and I told her I did, when I made the open table reservation. I feel like it's up to the hostess to give a heads up to the waitress. She ended up bringing a dessert with a candle and Happy Birthday written in chocolate to my friend which was nice of her to do. But by then we were stuffed."

  • "The strong fish smell upon arrival was a little off putting. The service in the beginning was great. What I can't understand is the place is small and the kitchen is close, why does the food arrive at room temperature??? Had to ask for a coffee refill. The waitress kept looking over, but did not offer anything. Was she waiting for us to leave? When I asked for more coffee, my first and only refill, it took her too long to bring it. The place wasn't that busy. The best part was the food, just would have liked it (warmer). Hats off to the chef!"

  • "For a relaxing brunch arrive early, meaning 11 am. We shared three delicious and freshly made scones with cream and jam that split in half easily and melted in your mouth. Two of us had delicious coffee, and I had ginger tea, yummy. The entrees are all/most in $15-17 range, and we enjoyed versions of Eggs Benedict with crab meat. There were some tempting cocktails but we resisted as the tea and coffee were so satisfying. Oh, and we were not turned off by any of the seafood smells that others mentioned. I love seafood so having the seafood cases at the front of the restaurant just makes BlackSalt that much more enticing."

  • "Nice, casual place to have lunch. The hummus appetizer was excellent. Our server was very good, and advised that we could pretty much order whatever we wanted that they had, and not just items on the menu. We created our own. I'm accustomed to lump crab meat, so I can't tell you if the (blue crab) crab cakes were delicious because it was just very different to me. I ate one and took one home. Lunch was around $130 before the tip (drinks, shared appetizer, 2 meals, 2 desserts). I don't think the meal was worth it, but the time with my dear college friend that I hadn't seen in 17 years surely was! That was priceless! I would go back here again if I were in the area, but I would leave the (blue crab) crab cakes alone."

  • "My first night in D.C. I went to Black Salt on the recommendation of Lonely Planet. This neighbourhood gem was buzzing at 9:00pm upon my arrival (w/ a fellow colleague). The service was very professional and it was clear that teamwork was a strong component of Black Salt's customer service success. Great food, kind staff, and an overall care for their customers. At 11:00pm when we went to leave, getting a taxi proved very difficult. The hostess made several calls but taxi were not arriving. The manager came out at 11:10pm and spent 20 minutes tracking down a cab company and finally hailing us a cab. Despite the restaurant being busy and other things on his agenda, he made sure we left Black Salt just as content as when we arrived."

  • "BlackSalt sells fresh seafood on ice at an entrance seafood counter. You may purchase seafood for take home cooking or uniquely, you may make a selection and have the kitchen cook it for you. All sampled menu items were fresh and expertly prepared. The appetizers were very generous, and could probably be shared by two diners. The whole fish was a standout. We loved the flexibility of the menu. Our server informed us we could have any menu item, and substitute a different fish if desired; or we could ask the chef to cook the fish in a different manner. I misread the special menu, and my chosen "entree" was really an appetizer. The server immediately told me no problem to make the appetizer into an entree, which I did. Large wine list."

This is not an inexpensive restaurant and significantly more attention should be made on customer service, such as updating the customers on any delays."

  • "For brunch I had scones that were very rich and sweet served with Devonshire cream, which they unfortunately also sweeten (the waitress mistakenly believed it's always sweetened). The salmon was nicely cooked but not too flavorful, and the beans it came with were grainy and bland, and the broccoli overly spiced with chili flakes. They took it back without question and brought shrimp and grits, a specialty I found overly rich, with shrimp that were not completely satisfying, sort of an odd taste. I'd eaten here before and really liked it, but was really let down this time."

  • "Lunch time has always been good, but going for dinner on a Saturday night was a big mistake. We were unfortunate enough to be saddled with a very snooty, moody server. Plus the ladies toilets were dirty. Also, because it's all hard services, it was very difficult to have a conversation without shouting. Wouldn't recommend it for dinner, especially on a weekend."

  • "In the Palisades in DC, this restaurant sits just northwest of Georgetown..... we decided to share a bunch of appetizers rather than order entrees (which limit the # and portion you can eat)... who wants to fill up on mashed potatoes? the mussels, oysters, butterfish and special Mahi Mahi were amazing!!! It was my birthday, and the restaurant had my name on the paper menu (as well as decorated our dessert plate)... great evening! good cocktails! good times!"

  • "A promised whole branzini to be fileted at the table turned into a mangled mess. After attempting the filleting they removed the plate, told me it was undercooked and returned with a plate that looked like it had fallen on the floor. Fish was in chunks (1" square) in a mess on top of the vegetables. They said "chef had suggested this approach" as a way to ensure I had no bones to deal with. Every bite had a bone or cartlidge in it. Thoroughly unpleasant. No one offered an alternative. I would not recommend the establishment"
