Diner Reviews
  • "really was excellent; have been there once since then; not bad on price either"
    Dined on 6/27/2013
  • "The food was really quite good, but not good enough to justify the prices. The waiter was nice, but the service was slow. If you aren't in a hurry and don't mind being slightly ripped off, then this is a fun place for a weekend night out."

  • "Our dinner group was very pleased with the food and service on a recent Sunday evening visit to Black's Bar & Kitchen. Specials for appetizers and entrees were innovative and flavorful. Special dessert (blueberry cheesecake-flavored ice cream) was a special treat."

  • "This restaurant never disappoints. Excellent food and service. They would really have to screw up to fall off my favorites list."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "They didn't respect reservation time. The people are not good. new servers not good"

  • "We have brunch here every month and occassionally for lunch or dinner. Definitely one of the best dining experiences in Bethesda. More importantly, the food is consistently great!"
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "This is one of the best meals I have had this year. The food and service were exceptional. Sunday night is 1/2 price bottle of wine night, and we got a $70 bottle of wine which was really...really...good. My fish was so good as grilled that I did not need the buerre blanc sauce that was served on the side. Cornbread was great. Salad was great."

  • "We were looking for a restaurant with seafood options. Blacks was full of delicious seafood and vegetable dishes. The ambiance in the dining room is not much different than many other restaurants, though the bar has a very cool set-up with plenty of room and a view of the food prep in the kitchen. The food and service were exceptional, though. We had trouble deciding on food, as so many options sounded flavorful and delicious. Ultimately, the dishes we chose (salmon and tuna) were beautifully presented, had great flavor, and were the perfect amount to fill us. We did not save room for dessert, but we left more than satisfied. The service and our waitress were excellent, as well. We would definitely return."

  • "Once again, an awesome overall dining experience ... and the mussels and oysters are both must haves!"

  • "Our party of 4 included 2 vegans and 2 non-vegans. All were very happy with their meal. Service was great and the meals were delicious with very nice presentation."

  • "The seafood is very fresh and extremely well prepared. There was a good selection on the menu accompanied by an excellent wine list. The oysters were exceptionally fresh and meticulously prepared. Overall, an exception evening with delightful servers and a great ambiance. I would fully recommend this restaurant to all my friends and colleagues."

  • "Wonderful fish, beautifully presented, very nice wines by the glass, and flavorful desserts to boot. We even loved the physical dishes and turned them over (once empty!) to see who had made them. I would definitely come back."

  • "First visit. Expectations high given reputation and experiences at other owner held restaurants. Needed to push reservation time - staff accommodating and friendly. Party seated promptly yet wait staff delayed in acknowledging table. Staff appeared divested from providing well informed drink and food recommendations and two items that we were directed to try were unpalatable and sent back to the bar and the kitchen. Martinis made with lime and mojitos were appreciated. Mussels and a variety of the side dishes (e.g., roasted sprouts, braised greens, cauliflower) were delicious. The apple pie ravioli dessert was a hit, the key lime pie was a solid miss. Overall food good, not outstanding."

  • "Seafood platter is delicious and great item for sharing."

  • "Just have to say that while i am a fan of cauliflower generally, the cauliflower served with the salmon at lunch this week was amazing. Of course a lot of butter probably helped but i couldn't believe the great taste of such a humble vegetable. i'll be back for more cauliflower soon!"

  • "Good quality and well-prepared food. Parking is easy. Reservation is recommended. Most of the staff are fairly friendly."

  • "Chef Black once again demonstrates his ability as a chef and restauranteur. Existing somewhere in the space between the casual hang out of Pearl Dive and the more formal gourmand approach of Black Salt, Black's Bar & Kitchen delivers a refined but relaxed atmosphere and, more importantly, plates of delicious food. It boasts a small menu done right, offering some classics and the ability to personalize via the a la carte section as well as inventive specials. From the appetizer to the dessert, it's a fantastic meal and a must for anyone looking to monitor the pulse of the food scene in the D.C.-Bethesda region."

  • "The waiter in training needs work. Need better attitude and be more engaging. Not very attentive; disappeared not seen very often."

  • "Had never had lunch at Black's Bar & Kitchen before but will gladly return. I picked the spot to meet some potential clients. When we got arrived at noon, the restaurant surprisingly was empty but quickly filled up. Great atmosphere/décor. Wish the lunch menu had a few more choices, but everything we ordered was good. I had a chicken with guacamole sandwich, and the waitress let me substitute salad for fries. :) Service was good. Great upscale spot to eat in Bethesda."

  • "Friday night the bar service was wonderful. The restaurant, not so much. After seating, we got menus immediately but 25 minutes later, nada, zich . . . The table next to us, that had been seated later, already had drinks. I complained to the desk folks and we were able to place our orders within minutes. The original waiter apologized but the problem was management had given him far too many tables. An off night for an otherwise good restaurant . . .that is too noisy for conversation."

  • "found black's on open table. booked because we were coming to bethesda overnight to visit a relative and wanted a good place to good to dinner. food and service were excellent. noise level was a bit high, but we were there early and during happy hour. half the restaurant is a bar and fresh oyster bar thus raising the noise level. also, there was a mix-up in the kitchen with one of our orders, but the staff was extremely apologetic and we were in no hurry. the food was delicious and beautifully served. definitely recommend..."

  • "Was there for brunch. Everyting was good. Rather limited selection for price, which was kind of exorbitant. Raw seafood lovers will appreciate more than the rest of us. I cannot bring myself to swallow a raw oyster!!! service was professional, and they managed not to be annoying while still being attentive. Establishment is nice looking and kind of hip. More of a suburban "Volvo" crowd, rather than an urban / downtown DC scene kind of thing...I'm more the latter!"

  • "Great place for an anniversary! We loved the food--inventive fish dishes! The wait staff treated us so wonderfully for our anniversary. First, when we arrived, they said Happy Anniversary. Then, we noticed that our menus said "Happy Anniversary". Our waiter said "happy anniversary" and our dessert said "Happy Anniversary" as well as a candle. To top it all off, we were given an extra sweet compliments from the chef and goodie bags for the next day. What a terrific way to spend our anniversary."

  • "The food is fabulous and the service very professional if not perfect. However, the size of the establishment and closeness of tables means that, when full, this place gets really noisy. You'll enjoy the food but save the romantic whispers for later."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "Excellent mussels (I've had Addie's), especially half price at happy hour. I've also eaten here from the full menu and highly recommend the NC trout and the lemon tart for dessert. Well-stocked bar."

  • "Fantastic dinner for myself and a dinner mate. Great food, interesting combinations and great service. While this place can be wall-to-wall people on a Friday or Saturday night, Sunday night was pretty chill (in a good way)."

  • "Worth the price if you come hungry. If not up for the bountiful brunch tables, their are sandwiches and individual breakfast items available too."

  • "We went for our son's 17th birthday. The restaurant made him feel really special. The atmosphere, menu and food were all great. We had a fantastic evening."

  • "Black's Bar was ok, but nothing special. We love the other Black Restaurant Group restaurants, especially BlackSalt and Pearl Dive, so we were disappointed. We went for lunch and had sandwiches that were just fine. The restaurant was pretty empty and it took a long time for us to be acknowledged after we sat down. Perhaps it's better at dinner. The decor is chic and the bar is really beautiful. We'll try it for cocktails another time."

  • "perfect for a nice, quick work lunch. also a great happy hour."

  • "This was my first time Black's. I chose it b/c of previous reviews and it was conveniently located next parking garage. We didnt have any apps, but we did try soup of the day - clam chowder. Good, but its not New England style. There were a lot of fish dishes available, but in the end we all had steak. Portions were generous, but it was priced as such as well. We got mac & cheese and brussel sprout sides. Mac & cheese were delicious. Overall good meal and I would come back another day to try fish dishes."

  • "This a great place to go for brunch, if you love seafood. The raw oysters and spiced shrimp were delicious. They also have other wonderful seafood salads. my table mates enjoyed the waffles and the made to order omelets. Service was polite and attentive."

  • "Disappointed in Black's Bar and Restaurant. Love others in this group of restaurants but this location comes close but fell behind. The wait staff never cleaned the table after a small spill. The food was fine but not great. I'll head elsewhere next time."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "A little overpriced for what you get in terms of food/service/atmosphere. Worth it to go once, but not good enough to put in the regular rotation."
    Dined on 9/5/2013
  • "Once again, an excellent dining experience at Black's. We come up to Black's from the District regularly -- the food is great, the locations convenient, and the service is wonderful. This time, two of us were early and waited in the bar for the rest of our party -- but were offered the rarity of going to the table immediately. The bartender cheerfully supplied more quarters for my meter, the bar waitress was friendly and quick, our waiter was excellent, service was good, and the hostess was friendly and flexible throughout. Love this restaurant!"

  • "BB&K had fallen off my radar screen. Brought 5 business clientele there-- great service--attentive yet unobtrusive. Food was beautifully presented and everyone raved about their dish--among us we had the signature scallops, Bronzino, duck and the Mahi special. The seafood sampler was impressive and a big hit with my guests. Paul Hobbs 2011 Pinot made the evening. Will definitely be back for that special evening out!"

  • "Had $100 gift certificate & were anxious to try out this place specializing in seafood. Was expecting to see something to jump off the menu & grab us as in a fresh catch. Well that didn't happen! Ended up cobbling a dinner together by getting multi oysters (that was the highlight!), a decent $14 salad that was smallish for the $, & another appetizer. My husband got tilefish, grilled w/a sauce (charge) 2 al la carte sides (cha Ching)....summary: nothing special, overpriced, un-memorable & noise made conversing difficult. We won't b returning. Our best advice: save a lot of $'s & just do drinks & apps."

  • "We have gone to Black's and its siblings many many times. This was the first time we were disappointed...The green salad was dreadful---with too much tarragon in the dressing and raw onions. The desert was just fair...a cake duo..but the cakes were stale. We ordered the whole fish, which was good but the waiter tried to push fancy sauces and none of the servers offered to filet the fish. The menu used to have more fish dishes that came with accompaniments so you did not need to order pricey sides."

  • "Not as good as expected. I ordered Scallops and there was no seared crust. They were mushy. Should be properly cooked for the price paid."
