Diner Reviews
  • "I had never been to Blackfish for lunch, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was very affordable. We usually save this restaurant for special occasions, as it is expensive. But you couldn't beat the lunch prices! The food was beautifully presented, and the servers were outstanding."

  • "Great find. Small but excellent menu. Knowledgeable staff who was very attentive. I would try to 5 or 7 course tasting menu next time."

  • "Another wonderful evening @ Blackfish! This evening's menu was very seafood heavy some of our group needed at least one meat option."

  • "On many visits, the food and service has always been exceptional."

  • "The food here is sublime. We selected the tasting menu and all four in our party were delighted. The selections were so inventive and the flavors were so amazing -- wonderful contrasts and combinations. The freshest oysters I have ever tasted."

  • "the food is very good, service good, uncomfortable cluttered seating and very loud. Overall, for the price (overpriced) would not return"

  • "We had thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Blackfish so came back with friends. We chose the $70 chef's sampling menu. Although the service and atmosphere were wonderful, the food was disappointing. The portions were extremely small and several of the dishes were quite average. The blue crab salad was mushy and tasted canned. It had 3-4 teaspoon sized dollops of crab with a tablespoon of diced tomato and pinch of small greens. For such a small serving, it should have been free of shell, but was not. My husband was unhappy with the duck; I thought it was fine. No vegetables were served. I prefer smaller servings, but left hungry and dissatisfied. I want to love this restaurant, but was let down."

  • "Same top quality experience, different meal every time! Cold pea soup with prosciutto and goat cheese - amazing! Tuna crudo with chili oil and citrus - outta sight! Chicken (yes, chicken) - so good it's actually real food (just kidding -sort of...)! The risotto's sublime, the off-menu arugula salad's crisp and delicious, and the beignets make Cafe Du Monde's seem mass produced. Caring and professional service in a subtle, understated and sophisticated setting complete a world class package - this is mighty close to being as good as it gets!"

  • "We ordered the 5 course tasting meal. All 5 courses were exquisite!! The food and sauce combinations were inventive and the presentation was beautiful. We went to the restaurant because a friend gave us a gift card and we're so glad that he introduced us to this gem of a restaurant."

  • "I had heard great things about Blackfish and decided to give it a try late on a Friday night. Did not disappoint! Impeccable service, incredible food."

  • "after many years of hearing such good things, we finally broke down, left the Main Line and Downtown dining scene for a night, to visit Conshohocken. we were stupid to not have come before!! the reputation is well earned. the meal was truly excellent and the service on the mark. each dish was special, and, while the portions were fine, you wanted to taste more, and were sorry to have your plate empty. we will be back."

  • "Our first visit will not be our last. Loved the excellent food and outstanding service. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates quality over quantity and doesn't mind paying for it. The place is small so I wouldn't expect to get seated without a reservation and please note it is a BYOB."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "excellent service - loved our server - delicious food would have preferred to sit in front of restaurant rather than back room"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "If you want large portions or tons of room to spread out and have private conversations, this may not be the place for you. But if you want well-considered, well-executed contemporary menu options and don't mind being fairly close to other diners (we do want them to squeeze in tables to profit and stay in business, right?), then check the menu and give Blackfish a try. My fiancée and I loved the tuna crudo and smoked salmon (how'd they get that egg in there?) first courses, as well as beef bavette and sea bass main courses. Great service. BYO."

  • "I had been to blackfish 3 times before and did not think it was anything special. I am not sure why I decided to try it again-possibly because people I respect like it. But this time it was very good. The service was excellent and we were seated right away, which is always a plus. Each course was very good. The only complaint I have is that I enjoy a salad before dinner and there wasn't one on the menu. When I asked about that, they told me that they do have a salad but it isn't on the menu. I ordered it and it was very good, but why not put it on the menu when you tell your patrons that here is nothing that isn't on the menu. A small thing, but it bothered me. I would go back."

  • "I wish we could go more often. This restaurant is a gem of a BYOB. The food is always first rate. It is one of the few restaurants in which my wife and I consistently order one of the two tasting menu options as many of the offerings in the tasting menu are not on the regular menu. We have never felt like there was too much food as we have with the tasting menu of other restaurants. Our evening was nicely paced. We have always been pleased with the waitstaff -- they have been consistently friendly and helpful. Bring a nice wine to complement the food."

  • "After a long, difficult day with neither breakfast nor lunch, we needed an "early bird" dinner at 5:45 before crashing for the night. While unwinding with a glass of sherry, we ordered appetizers. Even before they arrived, we felt as relaxed as if we'd napped first and arrived at 9 - a wonderful amuse bouche with tiny cubes of a delicious ricotta was enough to reboot us. The bean soup was both terrific and different (I think) from the soup of the same name I had there last time (lightly curried?). We both had yellowfin crudo, which was as delicious as it was pretty. Then we each had a different fish and loved them both. Dessert was a surprise - they'd made a bit of fennel ice cream that day and offered to let us have some - wow!"

  • "Blackfish is truly outstanding. The food is creative, beautifully presented and jumping with flavor!"

  • "The food was outstanding, all prepared exceedingly well - interesting. The service, although everyone is warm and friendly could use a little improvement. The servers need to listen! We all (4) ordered appetizers but asked for the risotto for the table come out first - not only did it not happen but all appetizers were served & THEN the risotto was placed on the table, about 3 minutes later. The servers who served both appetizers & entrees put the wrong dish down in from of each of us both times!!! As they were announcing what they were serving and placing it & we said "no, that goes to her/him, they still placed it in front of the wrong person! All in all, the food is so fabulous here we had a wonderful evening."

  • "Very good meal all the way around, especially the short rib ravioli. Very attentive wait staff and portions for dinner fish were just enough to fill you up but not make you feel overstuffed. Only downside of dinner was the table, which is tough to complain about, since they all look challenging. My wife was backed up to the wait station and I was in the aisle to get to the back room. All that being said, we would gladly go back. Parking on a Friday night is a bit challenging as well. "

  • "Delectible! The host, he is soo kind! And our server, as well! Great choices! White bean soup is the BEST I have ever had in my life!! :-) The Tile fish is even better than the salmon… but everything here is fabulous! :-) "

  • "The food is consitently outstanding. The summer addition of cold carrot soup is enough to return several times."

  • "A very pleasant and tasty lunch place. It's small--perhaps it would be "intimate" for dinner. Unfortunately, no liquor license."

  • "We sampled all the starters and each was better than the last! The pastas and main courses were equally delicious and they put together a lovely birthday dessert. We will be back."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "The food was superb. Everything, without exception. Our server could have explained a bit more about how the courses worked. The place was packed, though, so that could account for it."

  • "We had a wonderful dining experience at Blackfish. They use fresh and interesting ingredients for a truly memorable meal. Will definitely return!"

  • "Blackfish has been a consistent top spot for years. It's sophisticated & elegant in an understated, tasteful way. The fabulous food is deceptively simple in presentation but very labor intensive, and everything is outstanding. My white bean soup was truly amazing - thick, rich and complex - somebody worked very hard on it. The crudo was so carefully sliced I suspect a micrometer was used, then artfully plated, and absolutely great. For primi, I had cavatelli w/rabbit, peas & cauliflower & my wife had risotto - sooooo fine! My skate wing & my wife's bouillabaisse were both terrific. This meal did justice to the great wines we brought - everything about it was quite simply wonderful. A culinary fairy tale? Not at all - it's that good!"

  • "Recently visited this gem of a restaurant in the heart of Manayunk, and once again it proved why it receives so many accolades. This is the perfect BYOB for a special occasion or when special guests come to town."

  • "One of the finest meals I have eaten in Philadelphia. Inspired cuisine. We had the 5 course prix-fixe. Chef was very accommodating regarding food preferences. Every dish was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. "

  • "Had a fantastic dinner--highly recommend the tasting menu. Highlights were foie gras, crudo and beignets. We ordered 7 courses but were served more than 10!"

  • "Dined with husband and another couple. We loved every item we got from the menu. The amuse bouche was a special treat, something with beet and ricotta, it was like nectar of the gods in a tiny glass. The white chocolate cremeux was beyond description. I would skip a meal to have two of those & may return to do just that!"

  • "I must admit this is my third time eating at Blackfish, and I can't wait for my fourth. The chefs consistently put together a great menu. Make sure you order the tasting menu, but if you don't, the Smoked Salmon for a starter is a requirement. Couple this with being able to bring your own wine, I couldn't think of a better place to spend a romantic Saturday night. "

  • "The Blackfish Grille consistently delights the both the palate and eye with respect to the execution of its innovative menus. At its core, it is an establishment centered around food - exquisitely concieved and prepared - while avoiding pretention. The care with which each and every dish is crafted evidences fully the pride of creators. The food is the star. The room is plain, white, noisy and fairly congested. Blackfish's BYOB status adds a casual feel and goes to avoid the pretention, although one must beleive that many superb wines have been enjoyed in accompanying the supremely worthy fare. All in all, a casual gastronome's delight - and focused on the right things. "
