Diner Reviews
  • "Our food was delicious and there were so many more great options on the menu that I want to try. The restaurant had nice artwork up and a cool atmosphere overall."

  • "The food was ok, but nothing special. There are better in the complex. The sports bar area is fun and very loud, but pass if you are looking for a great meal."

  • "I ordered the lime seared salmon which was pretty good. The amount of food for what was charged was very small. The restaurant was ice cold and I had asked for them to make it a tad warmer to which I was told they would not do. The waitress told me that even though many people had complained about the cold, the manager would say by the time the air got comfortable we would have already left. Customer service was very poor."

  • "The evening would have been more enjoyable without sports being broadcast over heads. I have no objection to tv's in the bar section of a restaurant but, when I am dining, prefer the ability to converse."

  • "We were pleased with our trip to Blackfinn in Mt Prospect. Both the food and service were quite good. Our waitress made some great recommendations, and because of this, two of us ordered the mac and cheese with pulled pork--scrumptious. The other two in our party also enjoyed their entrees. And, the desserts were great. We are definitely coming back."

  • "Varied menu - something for everyone. The sea bass is excellent"

  • "Although our server was a sweet young woman, we felt very rushed. The $5 wine special turned out to be about 3 oz. of wine, so not really special. Bread was not offered. The portions were adequate but not that tasty. The restaurant was so loud. So many screaming babies and kids. The name of the restaurant gives the impression that you're going to have a lovely dinner along the lines of a "Bonefish Grill" but it's more like going to the iHop."

  • "Wait staff needs to be more attentive. Portions small for the price"

  • "This is a good spot for lunch when you need to talk business--unobtrusive service."

  • "Went with friends in from California and they are experts with wine and were very pleased with the selection. They were going to split their entree' s so asked our waitress for an extra plate. When she brought out the entree's she had everything already split for them. They told her the food was fabulous as well as the service."

  • "First time here and was impressed overall. Great beer list and reasonably priced. Food was good. Hubby had seared ahi tuna that was very flavorful and big portion, with fresh veg stir-fry. I had grilled fish tacos that were good but could have used more seasoning. Decent kids' menu, not just your typical grilled cheese and fries, and good prices. Big menu, lots to choose from. Atmosphere is lively and loud, TVs all around with sports playing. Our server was very friendly and not shy to make recommendations when we asked. We will definitely return!"

  • "Service was extremely slow, and not because they were busy. I had to ask for silverware. Never came back to refill my water. Another waiter finally came by and refilled my water, but left my husbands water glass empty! Took my food to wrap it up and accidently threw it out. It took 50 minutes to get our food which was a italian beef sandwich, my husband ordered a salad. My dinner made me extremely ill that night. Total time in restaurant was 1hour and 45 minutes. The waiter did have the kitchen cook me a free replacement sandwich to bring home (which only took 10 minutes wait time). But because i was so ill from the first meal, I was afraid to eat my replacement meal."

  • "We've been to Blackfinn several times and the food is very good. We had the salads for dinner this time and they were excellent and very ample in size. Other meals have also always been very good. The service was ok but the server was scarce...we waited a while for drinks and had to ask for refills on water, etc. Perhaps additional training for the servers or more servers would improve the situation if they are very busy."

  • "We are regulars at Blackfinn and have never been disappointed. The fish and chips are ample, the fish tacos are delicious and the Pad Thai is spicy and tasty. Service is always top notch."

  • "We were in kind of a hurry and our waitress was attentive to that and took our order quickly and food came quick as well. Food was good. Our friend loved his jumbalaya. We ate in the bar where the atmosphere is very warm and comfortable. I guess the only problem encountered was no offer to refill pop or coffee. It was Father's Day and I was surprised to see that the egg restaurant across the street had many people waiting outside and Black Finn was very uncrowded and does offer some nice brunch choices. Guess people haven't discovered their breakfast menu yet."

  • "We've been here many times. Thus time was to thank a neighbor. Food and drink were fine, and waitstaff was helpful. Thus far, we've never been disappointed."

  • "Have been to BlackFinn a few times before. While it was nice to sit outside for dinner, found that the service was much slower. Which may also have been why the food arrived cold. Would still recommend this to others."

  • "Had a bad experience on a busy Friday night with a party of six. Entries were served to three persons, then 5 minutes later to two persons, and finally 8 minutes later to last person. Ordered a second cocktail and they were not served until 20 minutes later. Disappointing. Our server was working hard but the kitchen and bar were understaffed."

  • "We met our out of town cousing for dinner, our first time at this restaurant. We were all quite satisfied with our meals. I had the shrimp/garlic over angel hair pasta.(YUM!) My husband had the pulled pork sandwich and our cousins had one of the hamburgers. The desserts we had we excellent! We did not have appetizers because we did not know how big the dinner portions would be. Our next visit we will try the appetizers. The wait staff were attentive but not intrusive."

  • "The experience was not as good as other times. The entree took thirty minutes to get which I thought was too long. The portions seemed smaller. A salad should definitely have bread included, not have to pay extra as most restaurants offer. I asked the manager about this and he said it was a corporate decision not to include the bread. Well, corporate should rethink that decision."

  • "We did enjoy our food service and the atmosphere. We were afraid it would be too bar like but they actually have a bar separate from the bar area. I will go again soon. There are so many food choices, something for everyone!"

  • "Good menu selection, good food, decent beer selection, great service and a happening place!! Never ate there before, but will definitely be back for more!"

  • "Need I say more ... Wednesdays are 1/2 off ALL wines, by the glass or bottle. We enjoyed some wine, shared a flatbread and had a delicious dinner. Servers are very attentive, yet not over attentive. Great Place, check it out."

  • "We went to Black Finn on a Wednesday for Wined Up Wednesday -- all wines 1/2 price, glass or bottle. We were seated in the Saloon area of restaurant. My husband and I shared the wine, a flatbread and the Pad Thai. Delicious on all accounts. The only thing that outdid the food, was the service. Jane was our server and she was awesome. Love Black Finn."

  • "Made my reservation through OpenTable, and showed up to find out that they only had the Mother's Day Brunch option. We love the regular menu, but didn't want brunch, and at $24.95, not a very good value. We ended up leaving prior to ordering. So, my recommendations are: (a) when severely limiting the menu for special occasions, let OpenTable know so that those of us who reserve online will know, and (b) offer some alternatives to the brunch. It's never a good option to limit folks to one option. BTW, there were very few people in the restaurant, so it didn't look like a very big draw. The breakfast place just across the way was stuffed full of people (better value?). We will come back to Blackfinn, but never on a holiday."

  • "We went to BlackFinn with a group of four and each of our meals was very good. The fish tacos are especially delicious and plentiful. Their flatbreads are tasty also and the salads are excelent. The scene is casual and comfortable. Sometimes the noise level can get high if the music is turned up too loud, but it is usually not too bad for conversation. The service was very good and friendly. We will definitely return and tell friends about this restaurant. "

  • "We've been there several times before, but this time seemed a bit "off". The food was OK - we've had better. It was Saturday night and the kids at the next table were quite annoying! And the evening sun was shining in our faces and also very annoying. My friend LOVED his bacon wrapped meat loaf and my other friends enjoyed thier pad thai. The peach chicken breasts were just OK. And why not serve bread with the meal! Pet peeve. "

  • "The waitress was not very good, never being around when you really needed her, and really only came by to rush us into giving our orders. Very unpleasant. Also, the restaurant was out of several good items on a monday at 6 pm, and the restaurant wasn't that busy. All in all, not an enjoyable experience and I wouldn't recommend it"

  • "The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. The food is very good and tasty with a wide variety of selections. Loved the blackened brie appetizer and the sear ahi tuna. The manager comes around to the table to make sure you are satisfied with the meal and service. It was my birthday and the restaurant treated me to a large piece of cheese cake on the house. This a restaurant that I always enjoying going to. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The apple glazed barbeque salmon was delicious. The noise level was a little loud for a Thursday evening. The waiter seemed frazzled by the amount of tables he had to cover. It looks like they could use more wait staff. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "I loved this place! Food, service, ambiance, comfort and fun you could not really ask for more. Perfect for a Saturday evening after a stressful week. "

  • "All six of us enjoyed our food at Black Finn. Got there early and waited in the bar for our friends. Great bar scene. Very lively. Everyone that we encountered on the staff was upbeat and made you feel welcome. Only one complaint. Black Finn does not serve bread with their salads/entrees. I always find that very strange. Granted we ordered the lavosh and it was very good...but a little piece of bread is always a welcoming gesture."

  • "We dine at Black Finn at least 3 times per month and are never disappointed. Wined-up Wednesday is awesome, as is Craft your Burger Thursday. This is a fantastic casual restaurant with delicious food, and outstanding service."

  • "This is the second time I've been to BlackFinn. Enjoyed it both times. They have so many options on the menu so it's hard to decide what to get!! We were happy with what we orders (salad and burgers). The server was odd and service was ok. My drink didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it, maybe it's just me? And our dessert (key lime pie) is recommendable! Looking forward to going back and trying more things. "

  • "The food was just ok on the level of other similar chain sports bars like Ram or Champs. The service was friendly but he seemed more inclined on pushing us to order more than in serving us better with what we had (maybe it was a newer less expd waiter). Refills werent automatic; i had to first ask for them and if they were free bc he wasnt coming by to refill altho he would come by to ask if "everything was tasting good?" after only a couple min after the food arrived and before we've hardly started. I only like the place bc its located conveniently across from the movie theater and it wasnt bad...but thats it."

  • "This restaurant is in a prime location in the suburbs and was crowded even though I don't think it should have been. The service was really good and so was the beer and bar selection. The food, though, was not great! The menu was trying too hard to be a step above Chili's or TGI Fridays, but failing miserably. My salad had one cherry tomato and the chicken sandwich was really dry and on a ciabatta roll, which made it even worse. They need a good chef to change their menu and go for either really good bar food or scale it up a notch to a dinner place. The ambience supports bar food and we are desperate for a place like that in our part of the burbs. Some tweaking would make this a winner!"

  • "My husband and I ordered the pecan crusted salmon that was on the special. Never again will I order anything and the special. The salmon had a strange texture it was very soft and mushy. I've had the salmon there before and enjoyed it very much but this was not enjoyable. Our server was extremely nice we did not complain about the food to her."

  • "Make sure to make a reservation because this place fills up fast, even in the bar. There were at least 2 work outings there on a Tuesday night so I'm glad we made a reservation. I had a mango martini that was quite tasty and struggled to keep it at one. Had a feeling they could be dangerous. We had the ying yang shrimp as an appetizer - delicious. I ordered the chicken tender appetizer for my dinner. BEST CHICKEN TENDERS EVER. These were definitely not chopped up, reformed chicken fingers. So good. My dinner companions had the Balboa and the Cheesesteak - also yummy. There's something for everyone on the menu. I'm eager to try their brunch."

  • "We were seated early at the booth by the door to the kitchen in the bar area. It was extremely distracting and not at all a good idea to sit anywhere near the kitchen. It was so loud in the restaurant that I practically had to scream to talk to my date. It's because we were in the bar area and when people drink they get LOUD. The Bulls and Hawks game was on and shortly around 9 pm there was a live duet of guitar players that had their amps so loud I thought I was at a concert! I ordered Jumbalaya Pasta. The sodium level was so high it was inedible. I struggled to degust some of the plate but had to push it away. Our waitress was too busy to ask us if our food was ok. We saw her about 5 times in the 3 hours we were there. Not a fun eve."
