A word from Blackbird
Critically-acclaimed Blackbird is home base for Executive Chef Paul Kahan, winner of the 2004 James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Midwest, and nominee for Outstanding Chef in 2007. Blackbird's principal partner, Donnie Madia, crafted a unique urban chic atmosphere that earned the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Design in 2002.

Chef de Cuisine David Posey joined Kahan in the kitchen in 2010. Together they reinterpret classic recipes using simple, local, farm-fresh ingredients, and cutting-edge culinary technique. Their menu is, at once, highly creative and utterly approachable.

Blackbird is the premier, pioneer West Loop restaurant. Its award-winning cuisine, high energy, and precise service offer a modern approach to fine dining. Wife had the aged duck breast which was awesome. I had the dry aged strip loin which was very good. Orange blossom parfait was an awesome dessert. Highly recommended. Would definitely return. "

Endive salad -- a very special presentation and a surprising delicious starter. My sturgeon was perfectly tangy. The chef seems to be particularly adept at balancing acids in his flavor profile. Menu descriptions a bit challenging and speak more to ingredients and methods than to the visual/taste experience -- benefits from server explanation. "

  • "I was surprised to get a reservation for 7:30pm at 7pm the same day at this highly regarded restaurant. The only down side was that I was a single and waited for a table at the bar until 7:50 when I gave up and ate at the bar. Patrick the bar man was the salvation of the evening as he was very personal and provided conversation I would not have enjoyed at a table. The maitre 'd did appologize for the wait, but not until I told the bar man that I would eat at the bar. Not very convinceing since he could now fill a two top instead of giving it to a single. Food was great."

  • "I was in Chicago on vacation with my girlfriend and wanted to take her to a romantic/special dinner. After some research, I chose to bring her to Blackbird and we were not disappointed by any means. Great ambience, friendly/professional/knowledgeable staff, and incredible food. We decided on the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and it turned into the greatest meal of our lives. Each dish was better than the last and the wine pairings were spot-on. I am a fine dining server at a top Baltimore restaurant and Blackbird truelytruly showed me what fine dining establishments should strive to be!! Thank you thank you thank you!!"

  • "Waiter were cold and arrogant. very loud! Food not memorable. Plating awful. Eight course chef tasting menu: 1st course Tempura Perch is a joke. Should be a surprise teaser. Sauerkraut is too sour and tough, halibut is tender; quail is salty; sepia curb is tasty; sirloin done well, but too salty. Walnut gnocchi has aweful texture and no taste. Chicken is dry. Bittersweet chocolate pudding is so aweful that we barely touched it. Don't get me wrong. The food is good, for an ordinary restaurant. But for a famed chef and the cost? Completely underwhelming! There is no transition, no cleansing of palette. No surprise factor. Nothing exquisite! No competition with Spago in LA. For the same price, If Spago is 9, blackbird get a 6!"

I was pleasantly surprised by the unique cocktails. I had the Poor Liza and my husband had the Presbyterian. We both throughly enjoyed our appetizers, dinners and desserts.   • "Overall, Blackbird is a great establishment and I had a lovely lunch when I came here with my boss. The menu seemed to have a lot of variteties and everything looked delicious. I went online to the lunch prix-fixe menu so that I could talk specifically about what I had for lunch but unfortunately the website has not been updated. I do remember having a caramelized onion soup which was delicious but not hot enough. At the end of the meal, our server came over to our table and asked what we wanted for dessert, when in fact we had already pre-ordered dessert with him as part of the prix-fixe lunch. This seemed like a silly error to me but other than that, service was great."

It is not that often that I find myself thinking about a meal days later but both my wife and I did just that - even remembering something as simple as the endive salad (it was great - no kidding!) Our server, Shannon, was a treat and kept the evening lively. We cannot wait to return. Enjoy!"

Nice, clean, and well lit tables with friendly, knowledgable service. Everything was first class. We had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and it was excellent. Interestingly enough, I feel like dinner was a good value. The price was high ($500 for dinner for two? Whew...) but the food and service were excellent. We wouldn't eat here every night, but for a special occasion, it was the right choice."

  • "The food is top notch and waitstaff very attentive, but don't expect to carry on a conversation without shouting - and having those at neighboring tables overhear and join in on your conversation. You can't help but meet the people next to you - they are 6 inches away. Go as a group, not as a couple wanting special time together. Back to food - everything is outstanding. Beef tartare and sweetbread appetizers had an awesome sauce. My husband's elk loin was several slices cooked to perfection. I had the schmaltz chicken which was tastey. We both were not fond of the wood burned veggies - too overpowering. Speaking of wood burning, lots of food is cooked with a "smokey" taste and the restaurant has a subtle odor of outdoor bonfire."

  • "From the beginning when one of the hosts tracked down the valet parker to the end when our car was waiting for us, everything was perfect. Although expensive, we felt that the meal was well wortht the cost. The food, obviously, is among the best in Chicago with every dish art work for the eye as well as the palate. Service was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. We could not have asked for a better evening."

  • "Light and airy surroundings. Long banquet with individual tables. The food was delicious. Even the mixed green salad somehow tasted fresher and more flavorful than expected. Duck sausage entree and monkfish entree were outstanding. Desserts were okay. Wine selection was very good. Waiter was very helpful in picking wine to match courses, however water refilling and bread replacement had to be requested, and the restaurant was not full. Overall, would definitely go back."

Love the variety in the menu that satisfied my fish loving wife (sturgeon and caviar) and my more meat driven desires (miso cured pork collar). Great looking spot where jeans and sweater is as welcomed as gals dressed for a night on the town. Worth a visit."

We made reservation but wait 20ish minutes at bar because several tables stay profoundly long after paying their checks. We decided to dine at bar instead.
