I was expecting a lot from the reviews. The soup and dessert were very good. The celery and lobster soup was fantastic. I had the salmon and my friend had the duck. We were both disappointed- especially in view of the cost. The salmon was dry and a bit salty. Not at all what I had expected. Disappointed by service at bar.

My wife and I had three courses each, all different. The dishes were all well-presented and delicious. Good wines were available by the glass. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. The place is noisy, chiefly because of the blank walls. The music was low-key, the conversations were not. Still, the meal was very satisfying.

very thoughtful menu/dishes ... components all belonged and worked together. our server was impressive as he spoke to dishes in a way that truly demonstrated he understood why the chef put each ingredient on the plate ... a rare, but very appreciated, trait and shows all staff pride in what they do ... my first time and hope my travels bring me back to Chicago as this joint is a real keeper!

Full-house and tight seating, but we had a nice table at the back of the restaurant overlooking the kitchen. Service was very efficient - this is a well run restaurant where everything works smoothly and like clockwork. Food was delicious with some very unique ingredients and pairings. Desire the growing crowds for the second dinner seating we never felt rushed. Highly recommended.

The decor is what you expect from the pictures on the website; no frills, tables in close proximity, but clean. The food was hit and miss; I ordered the hits and my friend ordered the miss. The veal sweetbreads were great, as was the sturgeon/pork cheeks. I was very happy with my order. My friend ordered the tartare and the salmon. The tartare was overly pungent, like taking a shot of toasted sesame oil. I found it unpleasant. I found the salmon to be similar in that the flavors were too strong. I understand that wild sockeye salmon is to taste more gamy, but I found it unpalatable. The service was very good, as was the wine menu.

I love nothing more than being a regular at a restaurant. This was my second time at Blackbird in a couple months, and since I have lots of friends in Chicago -- and work in the restaurant industry in New York -- there is always a reason to visit. I hope to dine at Blackbird on a regular basis. It has that quality that will put you in a better mood after a visit. The only thing that might be better than the food is the service and hospitality -- outstanding.

We had great expectations, but left disappointed. For $185 per person (total for tasting menu and wine pairings), the food and service should have been outstanding. They were not. Rather than being taken care of by one attentive waiter, the numerous courses and wines were delivered by 4 or 5 different people, often with unreasonably long gaps and the need for us to actually get up and report the inattention. Despite an exciting menu with many unusual ingredients listed in each dish, some of the items were totally absent or in such a small portion to be unidentifiable. Also, we were a bit surprised to have a 7:30 reservation, arrived at 7:25, and were seated at 7:55. No, I don't want to have a seat at the bar.....

Not to be missed when visiting Chicago! The appetizers were fantastic and the Walleye Pike and the Salmon were simply delicious! Dessert was amazing from a prize winning dessert chef. Service was good though the plates sometimes took a while to arrive. The room is very noisy as it is packed with happy diners! The bar was busy all through our visit. On my list to return to when I'm back in Chicago.

Visiting Chicago for the marathon weekend and Blackbird had been recommended to us by a friend to who travels there for business frequently. Blackbird did not disappoint. Friendly hosts greeted us at the door; seated immediately. Abundant conscientious serving staff tended to every need. Didn't get our server's name but he was pleasant, informative and very attentive. He made a great wine recommendation for our meal specifically. Highest compliments to the chef! Separate appetizers of sweetbreads and scallops were delicious. Then the duck, and the lamb. Finished with the parmesan cruller - fantastic! Restaurant isn't huge so lots of good energy around the room and fun action watching food come out of the kitchen. Really enjoyed!

The food and service at Blackbird live up to their shining reviews and reputation. They now open at 5 p.m. for diners going to the Lyric Opera, and a substantial number of us arrived at that time and got out in plenty of time. Our continuing complaint about Blackbird is that the tables are much too close together, making it hard to get in and out of your seat and making private conversation impossible. It also gets very loud when the restaurant is full. We like the location and food and service very much, but have to psych ourselves up for the tight space before we arrive.

I was only in Chicago for a few days, and there are ever so many choices, so I while I knew I was in for a good meal at Blackbird, I wasn't sure if it would be the best choice for lunch. Not only was there no wait-but the service was impeccable. I felt out of sorts being by myself, but the staff were attentive and lovely. The food was great-went for the prix-fixe menu, got a cocktail (because well, it was needed) and had some delectable coffee with dessert (Intelligentsia is where the good coffee lives, for sure). Thank you for a great experience! I'll bring more people next time!

We did the Chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and while everything was good, we were underwhelmed for the price. Tables were almost on top of eachother. Wait staff was constantly leaning over my husband's shoulder to put down dishes or refill water. Foodwise, nothing really stood out and a few of the flavor combinations were just not that great (steak + cucumber?). However, the wine pairings were spot on and really complimented the flavors. Overall a good, but not great dining experience. I have wanted to go to this place for years, and can now cross it off the list. Probably won't be back.

We went to celebrate my husband's birthday. The food was disappointing. The portions seemed small and felt over complicated. No birthday candle appeared which I EXPRESSLY requested, but the dessert we had ordered off the menu did. No apology for this miss. My husband ordered an espresso which never came. The manager sang their praises but admitted that for some unknown reason there was a miss that night and apologized. Then, the big reveal...he asked to clear our plates when we were fully expecting him comp us for the desserts or offer us a drink. BTW, our waiter was MIA from mid-service. The manager brought the bill at which point he told us he had comped us for the desserts. By that time, too little too late; we couldn't wait to leave!

On our last trip, we had a drink at the bar and asked to stay for dinner. No, that seat is taken. So we planned ahead and that was really worth it. Epic. I had the tasting menu and two glasses of wine recommended by the server. Both wines were perfect! The food was wonderful with unexpected flavors that did not overwhelm the dish. I especially liked the melon soup with shrimp, the flavorful cheese, the bread, and the lamb with cucumber. I was visiting Chicago at the very end of a longer trip, and it was the first time I have eaten at an expensive restaurant by myself. Though not many people do it, I was happy I did as the staff was very accomodating and I even had a brief conversation with the couple next to me who were celebrating their anmiversary. The coffee finishing the experience was also excellent. Blackbird delivered a wonderful last evening experience on all levels.

A wonderful place with good vibe. Elegant but simple decor. A lot of pretty, well dressed people. Acustics are good, comforting sounds of happy people talking and cutlery gently contacting the china. Food was exceptional. Ceative, but easy to interpret and understand. Great service. We had the pork collar and the lamb loin as our main dishes and the scallops and endive salad as appetizers. All were flawless, flavorfull and beautifully presented. Nice wine by the glass and bottle lists.

We had the dinner tasting menu at our table. The service was impeccable with the waiter recommending a beautiful wine. The tasting menu is 8 courses. This is the first that I've seen that had 3 of the 8 courses as desserts. Average desserts as they were with one particularly bad other than the cheese. Otherwise, the small small plates were good as well as the small entrees. Good to gret but not something that I will remember as amazing.

Tables were too close and restaurant way too noisy. When I pay that much for a meal I want to be able to hold a conversation without raising my voice to be heard by the people I am dining with. When the servers were serving the next table, they were leaning over me. Service was OK, but not what I would expect for the price point. Several times tried to get the waiters attention and he made a rude remark about our celebration. Desert was the best part of the meal.

We went to Blackbird for an anniversary dinner. We were surprised and dismayed by the excessive noise level and the shoulder to shoulder cramped seating. At these prices ($40 and over for an entree, $120 for a tasting menu) it did not seem unreasonable to expect some luxury and attentiveness. Our waitress was pleasant and informative about the menu, but often disappeared and had to be flagged down to pour our wine, which when drinking a bottle that cost over $100 seemed unfair. The food did not make up for this. It was superbly prepared, but in a technical way that seemed devoid of the offer of pleasure. I had duck breast which in other restaurants seems unctuous. This dish was bland and dull, as was my wife's lamb loin.

We picked several small plates and split them with the waitress making several recommendations and happily serving us course after course. It's a little Spartan - but that is the look they were going for. Very much not the usual fare - very different items with the farm to table touch. Will readily go back when we get to Chicago again!
